October–November 2025• Tishrei–Kislev 5786Published Bi-Monthly • Volume 11, Issue 1the SCRIBEBY TEMPLE BETH AM BY TEMPLE BETH AM

Tishrei-Kislev 5786 • The Scribe | Page 2In This Issue...There are so many things! But first thing’s first: Thank you! Thank you to those of you helping mail out this Scribe between holidays, thank you to those of you who have already renewed your membership (if you haven’t yet please do so), given to the High Holy Day appeal, and most of all thank you for showing up! Participation in Temple Beth Am programs and services has defintiely seen an up tick over the past year, with the congregation welcoming many new members. Thank you to everyone for being so welcoming and making our congregation a community others want to be a part of. And that’s before season has even started, but as you read this, things are really kicking into high gear with so many wonderful events headed our way! Sukkot brings us a not-to-be-missed guest speaker from Israel’s Special Forces to help commemorate the attack of October 7th. Our musical Shabbat series begins with a special guest in November, and I hear we might even be joined by our Torah Scribe in a few weeks! Men’s Club has a brand new trip opportunity to the Navy Seal museum, and Sisterhood has Lois Remick back by popular demand for learning over lunch. A master sommelier will be on hand for an exclusive Wine Tasting event on October 15, and Rabbi Alon is starting a brand new class about the greatest debates in Jewish History. Our first Shabbat dinner of the year will have a delicious Friendsgiving theme this year, and Back to Basics is returning for another year of helping local children in need. If ever there was a time to read the Scribe cover to cover so you don’t miss a thing, it’s now! Tishrei-Kislev 5786 • The Scribe | Page 3HALLOWEEN ON A FRIDAY NIGHTThis year, Halloween falls on a Friday night—and let’s be honest: most of our kids and grandkids will go trick-or-treating. We’re not here to guilt-trip anyone. The goal is to name our Jewish concerns clearly, and offer a practical, values-based approach that keeps our families connected to Judaism while remaining part of the culture around us.Halloween began as a seasonal harvest festival with pagan origins, tied to liminal rituals marking the shift into autumn. On that basis alone, many halakhic voices discourage Jewish participation. They view Halloween’s rituals—costumes, going door-to-door for candy—as chukot ha-goyim, religious customs not ours to imitate.Interestingly, the Church originally had a similar issue with Halloween’s pagan roots. Their solution was to overlay the day with religious meaning: October 31 became All Hallows’ Eve, the vigil before All Saints’ Day. In doing so, Halloween was essentially “baptized” into Christian liturgy. That move may have made the holiday spiritually appropriate for Christians—but for Jews, it only complicated the matter. Now we’re not only contending with pagan origins, but also with a day embedded in Christian sacred time. So even if modern Halloween feels secular, its layered religious framing gives Jews another reason not to adopt it.The reality in 2025 America is that most Americans, including many Jewish families, experience Halloween as a neighborhood celebration, not a theological statement. It’s candy, costumes, and community—not catechism. If we declare “Jews don’t do Halloween” while 95% of our community still participates, we risk creating a gezeirah she’ein hatzibbur yakhol la’amod bah—a rule the community simply can’t sustain. That can lead to children feeling excluded, and even resentful toward Judaism. So instead, we acknowledge the religious complexities—both pagan and Christian. At the same time, mipnei shalom – for the sake of peace and educational realism guide us toward a healthier option: participation with boundaries and intention. No, we’re not “making Halloween Jewish.” We’re helping Jews stay Jewish—while living kindly, wisely, and thoughtfully in a shared cultural space. This year, before your children start roaming the neighborhood collecting candy, take a moment to center the evening with your own tradition. Light Shabbat candles. Say haMotzi over challah. Tell your kids: “We begin with, Shabbat, our own tradition. Then we go be friendly neighbors.” And of course, make sure they’re safe.RABBI ALONA MESSAGE FROM

Tishrei-Kislev 5786 • The Scribe | Page 19THE ONE SCHOOLa message fromThe school year is off to a wonderful start, filled with community spirit and meaningful connections. We began with our annual Ice Cream Social, a joyful evening that brought families together and set a positive tone for the year ahead. In September, the Back-to-School Bake Sale and Teacher Treats were both great successes, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our families. These events not only raised funds for our preschool but also showed heartfelt appreciation for our dedicated teachers. We are pleased to share that the TOS Spirit Tee Shirt has returned and is now available for purchase. It is a wonderful way for students, parents, and teachers alike to proudly display their temple spirit.Another highlight of this year has been the return of our weekly Challah Sales, featuring sourdough challah from local baker Bread by Johnny. Each loaf is truly exceptional, and we are delighted to continue this delicious tradition.Ordering information for both of the above can be found on our website: theoneschoolpto.comLooking ahead, we are excited for several community events this fall:DAS Beer Garden Spirit Night on September 17thPizza on the Playground on October 8th (Sukkot activities!) & November 13th. Generously sponsored by the Cutrona Family.Scholastic Book Fair October 24th-31stWe are grateful to our PTO members, preschool families, and volunteers whose support and dedication continue to enrich our community. With your involvement, we look forward to another year of growth, celebration, and togetherness. As always, you can reach us at [email protected] or follow our new Instagram!PTO PTOA Word from Diana SnaiderDirector of Early Childhood EducationSchool is in full swing, and the children have settled in beautifully! Each morning, it is such a joy to greet families with smiles, hugs, waves, and high-fives. Walking through the halls and seeing the children’s artwork proudly displayed on the bulletin boards is both refreshing and inspiring. This fall has already been full of meaningful celebrations. In September and October, we welcomed the Jewish New Year with Rosh Hashanah traditions—sharing apples and honey in the classrooms and singing joyful songs with Cantor Marcy. The children were especially excited to hear the shofar, experiencing its powerful “wake-up call” to the new year. Many of our classes also built their own sukkah as part of our Sukkot celebrations, and together we enjoyed the beauty of this special harvest festival. Now, as we prepare for Thanksgiving, our focus has turned to gratitude. The children are singing songs with Cantor Marcy and participating in meaningful classroom activities that help us reflect on all that we are thankful for.
