HAMAKOM HAPPENINGS_______________________
by Alissa Frankel, Education Director
Every year the 6th grade students host a Tzedakah Fair. Their teacher, Ms. Emily, guides the students through activities
to define and reflect on why we give tzedakah, and leads discussions about prioritizing different issues. Then students
choose which organizations they would like to research and collect tzedakah for, based on what they have learned. Each
student presents their organization to the rest of the school and then students can choose which organizations they
would like to give their own tzedakah money to. They researched and created PowerPoint presentations that included
the organization’s mission statement, ways to donate or volunteer, and why they chose this cause. This year looked a little
different (as students presented virtually), so to share a little of their hard work, I summarized each of the organizations
they chose and why they chose them.
Hughie and Selma Black Foundation: Ryann chose this foundation because it is run by her summer home, Pine Forest
Sleepaway Camp. She wrote “I love camp and I want all kids to have the amazing camp experience that I am fortunate
enough to have.” For more information: pineforestcamp.com
Feeding America: Ariela chose this organization because, “In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment and
food insecurity soared. More than 42 million people may face hunger…people need help, and we are the people who can
help them.” For more information: feedingamerica.org
Red Panda Network: Madeline chose this organization because red pandas are endangered due to habitat loss, illegal pet
trade, and poaching. Red Panda Network is committed to the conservation of wild red pandas and their habitat through
education and empowerment of local communities. For more information: redpandanetwork.org
World Resources Institute: Jesse chose this organization because the World Resources Institute works on six goals that
the world must achieve this decade in order to secure a sustainable future—climate, energy, food, forests, water, cities,
and transport. For more information: www.wri.org
St. Jude Children’s Hospital: Sydney chose this organization because, “It’s important for every child to have the
opportunity to live like a kid and have as much fun as possible and spreading awareness of how to help is one of the ways
that can help impact these children.” For more information: stjude.com
American Cancer Society: Sarah chose this organization because cancer has affected her family a few times and she
wants to help get rid of cancer. American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to
eliminating cancer. For more information: cancer.org
The Pet Cottage: Aden chose this organization because he loves animals and likes helping them. He feels good when he
knows he can help an animal’s life through adoption. The Pet Cottage provides lifelong care through sanctuary residency
or forever guardianship. For more information: thepetcottage.org
Palm Beach County Food Bank: Ryan chose this organization because the food banks help alleviate hunger in Palm
Beach County by providing residents in need with food, and we should all be treated with compassion and kindness
during difficult times. For more information: pbcfoodbank.org
Friends of the Earth: Dara chose this organization because more people need to help keep our environment clean.
Friends of the Earth is a network of grassroots groups in 77 countries fighting for clean energy and solutions to global
warming. For more information: foei.org
Loggerhead Marine Life Center: Ella chose this organization because she loves sea animals and the beach. Due to
littering and pollution, the sea turtles need our help and Loggerhead helps take care of injured sea turtles and keep our
beaches clean. For more information: marinelife.org

__________________________ YOUTH GROUP NEWS
by Elana Beame, Youth Engagement Director
On June 4, Temple Beth Am will honor our graduating high school seniors at a special Shabbat Service. Some of our
seniors have been a part of the TBA community since preschool. Check out some quotes below from a few of our seniors
about what the TBA community and their involvement in our JAMTY Youth Group means to them.
“I am very proud to say that my parents and I have been active in the Temple Beth Am community, which has been my
second home since I was six months old. For the last four years I have been able to continue to be an active member in this
community through my involvement in JAMTY. I was given the amazing opportunity to serve as the Membership and
Communications Vice President on the JAMTY board. Throughout my time at Temple Beth Am and in JAMTY I have
created so many amazing friendships that will last forever and have expanded many of my leadership skills throughout my
time on the board. I am going to miss everyone so much, but I can’t wait to see what the future holds for JAMTY!”
— Zoe Denmark, University of Central Florida
“I didn’t have the chance to officially join JAMTY until my senior year, but I have been very fortunate to have been
attending events since my sophomore year of high school and am currently serving as Programming Vice President on the
JAMTY Board. This experience has taught me so much about my leadership skills, allowed me to make amazing friendships,
and connect more with my Jewish identity. I hope JAMTY continues to be a safe space and fun environment for students for
many years!”
— Hillary Mauser, Florida State University
“Temple Beth Am has been my second home since my sister went to preschool in the trailers. It has given me a rare gift: a
loving family that has taught me compassion and a passion for Judaism. I will always be part of this community, especially
JAMTY, and will use the leadership skills it’s brought out in me as I leap headfirst into my next adventure.”

THE ONE SCHOOL NEWS FOR JUNE/JULY______
by Patty McCaulley, Early Childhood Director
The One School at Temple Beth Am was grateful to be able to offer an in-person preschool graduation for our Shining
Stars 2021 graduating classes. Among the 35 children who received their diplomas, most had attended our Early
Childhood program since they were young toddlers.
I would like to recognize all of The One School teachers who provided them with an amazing educational foundation
and contributed to their Kindergarten readiness. Our preschool graduation marked a milestone celebration for our

How can you honor your deceased loved one?
By placing your loved one’s name on the Memorial Board in the Memorial Hallway entering the Sanctuary.
––––––————————————————————————–––––––––––––––––––––––––
When you do this, a light on their plaque will be lit on their Yahrzeit (anniversary of their death)
and their name will be included in the Shabbat announcements. Their light will also be lit on
Yom Kippur and their name will always be included in the Yizkor Book during the High Holy Days.
Even when you are gone, your loved one will not be forgotten. Plaques are $500.
