Kislev-Shvat 5786 • The Scribe | Page 2In This Issue...In this issue we say goodbye to 2025 and hello to 2026! I don’t know about you but I am excited for a new year, especially this one where winter will bring us a return visit from Rabbi Akiva, our torah scribe. His visit will not only provide additional opportunities to write in the Torah but he will join us all weekend long for speaking engagements, including a presentation about an amazing Torah-in-the-public-sphere project he is currently a part of in Germany. If you would like to learn more about contributing to our Torah campaign, please let me know. January will also bring back the Brisket-Off or the sixth year! We have a number of first time competitors, live music by congregant Paul Marcus, and a local celebrity judging panel- it should be a great night so hurry and get your tickets! Everyone’s favorite Shabbat Service is also coming up- Broadway Shabbat is back, along with a wonderful Sisterhood game party, a delicious Men’s Club happy hour, and a wonderful kid Shabbat to welcome back our youngest friends from Winter Break. And I know it’s cheating but, I’m so excited I can’t waitcoming up in February we have Joe Buchanan as our muscial aritst in resident, if youve never heard Jewish country music, this will be a weekend you don’t want to miss. What can I say, winter is a great time to be at TBA, and I look forward to seeing you at many of the wonderful events coming up. Kislev-Shvat 5786 • The Scribe | Page 3WHY YOUR HAND BELONGS ON THE PARCHMENTSince my Bar Mitzvah, I have stood at the bimah and read from the Torah hundreds of times. The rhythm of the trope, the beautiful calligraphy, even the distinct scent of the parchment are deeply familiar to me. Yet for most of my life, I remained on one side of the scroll: the reader, not the writer.Last month, that changed. We were privileged to host Rabbi Akiva, a Torah scribe (sofer), who brought an unfinished panel from Temple Beth Am’s new Torah scroll. The power of his visit wasn’t only in his teaching—it was in his invitation to sit beside him, hold the quill with him, and write a letter on the parchment ourselves.Years ago, when I lived in Israel, I participated in a Torah project from afar. We never met the scribe; we mailed a donation and received a certificate. It was a mitzvah, but also a transaction. I felt no different afterward. This time was completely different. Holding Rabbi Akiva’s hand while dipping the quill and carefully forming a single Hebrew letter was a spiritual experience I didn’t expect. It felt intimate and profound. That is why I am urging you to participate when Rabbi Akiva returns in January. Why is this so important?1. Breaking the DistanceWe treat the Torah with such reverence that we often keep it at arm’s length. We dress it in a beautiful cover, keep it behind heavy doors, and when we kiss it, we usually do so through the filter of a prayer book or tallit. We rarely touch the parchment itself.Over time, this can create a psychological distance. The Torah becomes a precious object we admire from afar rather than a living heritage we own. When you hold the quill and help write even a single letter, that distance collapses. The scroll in front of you is no longer just “the” Torah; it becomes your Torah.2. A Silent LegacyPicture the future. Years from now, a B’nai Mitzvah student will stand at our bimah, wrestling with a tricky trope pattern and finally chanting their portion with pride. They will have no idea that one of the letters holding their reading together is there because you put it there. But it will be.3. The 613th CommandmentOur tradition teaches that the final mitzvah in the Torah is for every Jew to write a Torah scroll. Very few of us have the skill, time, or resources to fulfill that in the literal sense. But halachah understands that by writing even a single letter, you share in the fulfillment of this commandment. This is one of the rare mitzvot that most Jews never get the chance to perform. When you write that letter, you are not only touching parchment—you are stepping into a commandment that reaches back to Sinai and forward to generations yet unborn.Rabbi Akiva will be back in January with more teachings and, most importantly, more opportunities for you to write. Don’t let this pass you by.In a world where so much is digital, temporary, and easily deleted, come do something permanent. Come put ink to parchment as our ancestors did.Come write your letter.RABBI ALONA MESSAGE FROM

Kislev-Shvat 5786 • The Scribe | Page 18A Word from Diana SnaiderDirector of Early Childhood EducationThe One School fell right into fall, and we were even lucky enough to enjoy a few days of true fall weather! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration in class. The children performed Thanksgiving songs and were absolute superstars.Once our fall festivities wrapped up, our classes jumped right into Hanukkah! We made menorahs, enjoyed latkes, and sang Hanukkah songs together. Hanukkah lasts for eight nights to commemorate how long the holy light burned. Many Hanukkah foods are fried in oil to symbolize the miracle of the oil lasting eight days. Some delicious treats enjoyed during this time include latkes and sufganiyot. The children also learned how to play dreidel, and we used gelt—the little golden coins—as part of the game.In December, we also began hosting our Pajama Drive. This drive is a special way for our school community to give back to families in need. We are collecting new, unused pajamas for children up to 12 years old and will be donating them to the local Jupiter chapter of Beyond Bedtime (formerly the Pajama Program). We’re excited to conclude our drive with a big Pajama Day at school! It is so important for children to learn gratitude and understand that others may not be as fortunate. We appreciate your support in helping teach these meaningful lessons.Upcoming Events• December 19 – Temple Beth Am Hanukkah Event, 5:30pm• January 9 – Kid’s Shabbat, 5:30pm• January 19 – No School (MLK Day)• January 22 – Pizza on the Playground (PTO event)• January 27 – Bake Sale (PTO event)• January 30 – Tu B’Shevat Celebration – All parents invited at 9:15am

Kislev-Shvat 5786 • The Scribe | Page 19THE ONE SCHOOLa message fromThe One School PTO Update Wow! What an amazing school year it continues to be! The students have been so busy reconnecting and meeting new friends as the year ramps up. We all got to celebrate through the holidays, family Shabbats, and even a special evening Shabbat with Rabbi Alon. Our kids are now busy preparing for their Thanksgiving celebrations and soon their Channukah celebration. What a wonderful time of year! To recap, October was filled with fun, including: • our first Pizza on the Playground where kids got to go in the Sukkah for songs and learning, • a fall flavored bake sale and teacher treats and, • another successful Book Fair, filled with superheroes, princesses, and all the magic a story can bring. All the proceeds go to help purchase classroom supplies and furniture for our school. As we settle into November, we continue to offer our fundraisers through our TOS Tee Shirt sales, our weekly challah from Bread by Johnny and Mable’s Labels. The Challah sales have been such a hit that we plan to continue sales into the next term and offer monthly bagel pop-up when there is all-school Shabbat! One of our new and exciting event this year is our first annual Preschool Prom. Save the date April 25, 2026! We are looking for anyone who wants to join the planning/organizing committee, please contact [email protected]. Last but never least, our shoutouts to the generous sponsors of our social and supplemental programs. Our first two Pizza on the Playgrounds were sponsored by the Cutrona Family. Pizza on the Playground is a social event for all families to come together on the playground to chat and play. This quarter’s Amazing Athletes was funded in part by TOS parent, James Knox, of Transworld Business. Amazing Athletes is a fantastic program that teaches the students leadership, skill building and cooperation through sport and activity—sponsorship opportunities are still available! If there is anyone else who is eager to sponsor an event, visit theoneschoolpto.com. A heartfelt thank-you to our PTO members, preschool families, volunteers, and all those who help us enrich the school experience—both inside and beyond the classroom—for our next generation of incredible young learners.
