Shvat-Nisan 5786 • The Scribe | Page 3THE TRADITION OF NEW PATHSIn the Torah portion we just read, we encounter a distinct phrasing. The text—and our Amidah prayer—describes the Divine not as “The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” but rather as “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”Grammatically, this repetition seems inefficient. Why repeat the word “God” three times? The Sages offer a profound answer: Because God was not the same to each of them.Abraham found God through radical hospitality. Isaac found God through introspection and meditation. Jacob found God through struggle, wrestling with angels in the dark. Each had to forge his own unique relationship with God. If the Torah had grouped them together, we might mistakenly believe there is only one valid way to connect with the Divine. This is the same reason why we, in our community, recite the names of the Matriarchs—Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. We mention them not just to be inclusive, but because they, too, found God in their own distinct ways. Sarah found the Divine in laughter and belief against the odds. Rebecca found God through bold intuition and decisiveness. Rachel and Leah found God through the complexities of relationship, resilience, and building a future. By naming them, we acknowledge that the path to God is not singular - it is personal. This ancient wisdom speaks directly to a tension we feel today. We have a deep, nostalgic affinity for “the way things used to be.” We love our specific melodies, our familiar prayer structures, and the traditions that feel like home. Sometimes, we look at the new generation with their new ways and feel a sense of hesitation. We say the young are the future, but in our hearts, we often want their future to look exactly like our past. But the lesson of our ancestors, both the Patriarchs and the Matriarchs, is that demanding carbon copies is not the Jewish way.If we force the next generation to find God exactly as we did, we deny them the authenticity of their own discovery. The wisdom of Judaism from the very beginning was that every generation must discover God for itself. When our children find a new entry point into Jewish life, they aren’t breaking tradition—they are fulfilling it.Innovation is not anti-tradition. It is our traditionRABBI ALONA MESSAGE FROM

Giving to others, especially on Purim, ensures that everyone has the means to celebrate during the holiday and honors Esther and Mordechai’s legacy of saving the Jewish people. To fulfill the mitzvah of matanot l’evyonim can be as simple as dropping coins into a tzedakah box or making donations of food or clothing to a local pantry or shelter. All toiletries must be new and unused, and can be dropped off in the Temple lobby. Sunday, March 1 from 9:30am-3:00pm: Blood Drive for Amy’s Army FloridaDid you know that in the Unites States, only 5% of the population that’s eligible to donate blood actually does so? And that 1 in 7 hospital patients needs blood? You can make a difference! The Big Red Bus will be stationed in our parking lot on March 16. All donors receive a gift card, a t-shirt and a wellness check-up. Please consider donating blood and giving someone the gift of life.
