What do we do when our cultural values
and practices clash with Biblical teachings?

How do we advise new believers?

Freedom to celebrate culture can be found for Christians
as they develop Scripturally sound ways to

integrate faith and culture in handling con ict and in
events such as births, marriages, and deaths.

The Culture meets Scripture Workshop,
conducted by Jo Shetler and Amy West, will help
Christian leaders to examine cultural practices in
light of Scripture and then formulate a response
that both aligns with Scripture and yet remains

culturally meaningful.
Participants will be trained to lead others

in the process

JO SHETLER

Jo Shetler, M.A., Intercultural Studies BIOLA
University. A Bible translator in the
Philippines and then head of that NGO’s

Anthropology Department; currently a
Scripture Engagement Consultant. She
was assigned to the Philippines where
she translated the NT for the Balangao

people. In her inspiring book, “And the
Word Came with Power,” Jo shares
amazing stories of her encounters
with mediums and evil spirits
and how the Balangao people
were set free from the
bondage of fear of evil spirits.

Her experiences in the eld have greatly enhanced her understanding of cultural
and spiritual con icts that Christians often face.

AMY WEST

Amy West, Ph.D., Fuller’s School of
Intercultural Studies. Formerly an
assistant leader of the Anthropology
Department for a Philippine NGO;
currently a Senior Scripture Engagement
Consultant; co-developer of Culture
meets Scripture Workshop. Her focus is to
equip people with tools to evaluate their
personal and cultural practices
through the lens of Scripture
so that they might align
their beliefs and actions
more closely with God’s
Word.
