Ceremony Profiles Ana Lorena Mejia Ceremony Host Ana Lorena Mejia is 40 years old, a mother, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic and now a LAGCC graduate with a major in communication studies. She came to the United States at the age of 12 with a dream of one day graduating from college. She has been able to fulfill her dream at LAGCC in a journey that offered her the opportunity to participate in the Global Scholar Achieving Career Success (GSACS) in a multinational collaboration between five colleges of the City of New York and four universities in the Middle East and North Africa. Giving her the opportunity to work with Palestine Ahliya University focusing on United Nations Sustainable Development Reducing Inequalities. Thanks to the great skills and knowledge acquired in communication studies at LaGuardia she was able to go from a bartender job to a corporate position as an event coordinator at one of the most prestigious golf country clubs in NY. Her education at LaGuardia has allowed her to explore beyond what she thought she was capable of. She still has big dreams of someday becoming a great communicator on tv for this she is relocating to Miami Florida to join the University of Miami in the fall of 2025.

Ceremony Profiles Kim Lonzo Ceremony Host Kim was born and raised in New Orleans. When he graduated from high school in 1986, he considered going to college. Instead, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where his work in military intelligence took him to the U.S.S.R. However, after two years with the military he was asked to leave because his superiors had found out that he was gay. “This was a very different time, well before even ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ Nevertheless, it was upsetting.” After his discharge, he decided to go to college and enrolled at the University of New Orleans as a physics major with a minor in mathematics. However, not long after his college career started, it would end. Tragedy struck his family—his younger brother Ken died unexpectedly as a result of gun violence in New Orleans. Kim could no longer find the will to attend his classes. He put his studies on hold, in favor of pursuing another goal: comedy. In 2003, Kim found a job that merged his love for New York City with his skills as a performer; he was hired as a tour guide until he was laid off in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He decided to enroll at LaGuardia. “My partner Mathew Hyatt and I would go on rambling walks around Queens. When we’d pass LaGuardia, I’d think to myself, ‘that’s where I’m going to go.’” In 2022, Kim applied to LaGuardia. For guidance through the application process he connected with LaGuardia’s Office of Veteran’s Services, led by Daryl Griffin. He wants to become an attorney and feels that LaGuardia has prepared him well for the next phase of his academic and professional journey. “Hector Fernandez, my professor for Introduction to Paralegal Studies, is a wonderful teacher. He taught me how to write a legal draft.” Kim officially graduated from LaGuardia Community College in Fall of 2023. Now, Kim is a student in the CUNY BA program and is attending both City College and John Jay College.
