A robot is a machine—especially one
programmable by a computer — capable of
carrying out a complex series of actions
automatically.
Robots can be guided by an external control
device or the control may be embedded within.
Robots may be constructed on the lines of human
form, but most robots are machines designed to
perform a task, but literally robot means a 'slave'.
The 1st used of Modern Robots were in the
factories as INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS -(It is a simple
fixed machine capable of manufacturing tasks
which allowed production with less need for
human assistance) .
In 1954 George Devol invented the first
digitally operated and a programmable robot
called the Unimate.
In 1956, Devol and his partner Joseph
Engelberger formed the world's first robot
company.
In 1961, the first industrial robot, Unimate,
went online in a General Motors automobile
factory in New Jersey.

In 1942, the science fiction
author Isaac Asimov published
a short story called Runaround
in which he introduced
three laws that governed the
behaviour of robots.
1. A robot may not injure a human
being or, through inaction, allow a
human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by
human beings except where such
orders would conflict with the
First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own
existence as long as such protection
does not conflict with the First or
Second Law.
