Volunteering in Africa
Consciously or unconsciously, everyone of us does render some service oranother. If we cultivate
the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire forservice will steadily grow stronger, and will
make, not only our own happiness,
but that of the world at large."

During the summer of 2013 a few Rangarayan families
traveled to Tanzania in Southeast Africa on a volunteer
trip with their children. Three of our families: Vellanki,
Chalasani and Koya embarked on this journey. It has
been a long time dream for our children to travel to
Africa on volunteer trip and they were looking to travel to
various countries through various volunteer programs.
Finally, their wish came true when they came across an
organization called Cross-Cultural Solutions. We
traveled to Moshi, a small town the in the foothills of Kil-
imanjaro, and stayed in a home-stay provided by the
program.

We stayed in Moshi for about two weeks. In the
mornings we used to visit local schools to help teachers
teach English to the children. In the evening times we
participated in health seminars and local political sem-
inars. We also had the opportunity to go into the local
communities to learn about the Tanzanian culture and to
understand their local problems while witnessing some
of the harsh realities first hand. We even visited local or-
phanages and played with children there for one after-
noon, after buying them groceries to provide the children
with food.

During the weekends we went on two safari trips, and
we visited Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire Park in
Arusha. We even met Indians who migrated from our
country 100 years ago and have been living there for the
past three generations. Our children had a great
learning experience in visiting this underdeveloped
country and seeing the children with less food and
limited resources, and they became much more
appreciative of what they receive while living in the Unit-
ed States. For the parents it was like revisiting our villag-
es in 1970's. The scenery was filled with mud roads,
streets with no lights, houses built with mud and bricks,
chicken and goats roaming in the yards, and malnour-
ished children and uneducated poor people roaming in
the streets.

Destroyer Of Fears - Hanuman

When I was little, like everybody else, I was afraid of the dark. The tales and stories
of great, immense monsters and giants who feasted in the dark frightened me. My fear
started to reach a point where my grandmother got concerned. So, she came up with a
solution. She came to me one night when I couldn’t sleep and she said, “There is nothing
to fear. Just chant lord Rama’s name and the great monkey god, Hanuman, will protect
you.” After that night, I lost my fear of the dark along with every other fear I had.

Hanuman is one of the most popular gods in the Hindu Pantheon. He played an
important role in the Ramayana, in which he proved himself as Lord Rama’s greatest
devotee. He is also mentioned in the Great Mahabharata and the Puranas. He is even
mentioned in the texts of Jainism. He is described as the incarnation of Indra and Shiva,
and also as the son of Vayu. People worship this godly figure and admire him for his
great strength, humility, loyalty and valor.

When I was younger, I wondered why Hanuman’s mouth was burnt. I asked my
grandmother and she told me something peculiar. She said that Hanuman tried to de-
vour the Sun. I was star-struck. Why would somebody try to eat the Sun? She said that
when Hanuman was little, he loved mangos. One day when he felt famished, Hanu-
man looked up at the Sun. He thought that the Sun was an enormous mango. So, he flew
up to the Sun and tried to eat it. Instead he burnt his mouth. That is why his name, Han-
uman, means, ‘Disfigured mouth’.

As a devotee of Lord Rama, Hanuman is well known for his great devotion and
honorable attributes and qualities. He is also renowned for his demand for children to
respect their elders, and for elders to care for their young - ones. Anyone who is familiar
with the Ramayana appreciates Hanuman’s divine and friendly nature along with his su-
perhuman personality. He is venerated for his altruism, humility, selflessness, deter-
mination, and commitment to work towards universal peace and tranquility.

People pray to Hanuman to attain courage, freedom and protection from evil spirits and
forces. People who follow the Hindu faith believe that Hanuman is the vanquisher and
destroyer of all evil. He is an icon and idol of purity, determination, and unselfishness.

‘Learn’ by Shaitlya Sri Vellanki

If the word failure did not exist I would never have learned the meaning of success.
People have said that to me all the time when I was growing up.
But at times I wish I grew up oblivious to the meaning of success.
I mean things definitely started off that way…
When I first learned how to ride a two-wheeled bike,
Or when I first learned how to spell the word “anonymous,”
Or even when I first learned how do my own laundry –
I was never taught that these accomplishments equated to success.
I was simply proud that I had learned.
I had learned my tasks and I could repeat them and even teach them to others.
That was all there was to it, and I was very happy.
Then I “grew up.”
The word success entered my vocabulary, and along with it came the uninvited and stinging word called
failure.
The first time someone told me I hadn’t succeeded at something, I was also told that I had failed.
In that context, both of those words carried the most gruesome authority to hurt my self-esteem.
Ever since then, these words have haunted my growth.
I want to succeed because it means I won’t fail.
I don’t want to fail, so that I can succeed.
I set more and more goals, and life gets more and more complicated, and all I’m doing is giving more and more
power to two words that can never be separated from one another.
For there is no success without failure, and there is no failure without success.
And now I’m left to sigh heavily and wish I could go back to the days where I simply learned.
The times where I learned new things from anyone that was willing to teach me, and there was no success or
failure attached.
Just the words “try” and “try again.”
I didn’t fail at riding a bicycle the first time I skinned my knee. I just got back up and tried again, until I
learned.
And simply learning was enough. I gained the skills and the knowledge to become the girl I am today just by
my willingness to learn.
In a world where we have given power to success, we have also given power to failure, and personally I want
neither of them to exist.
What if instead, all that was left in the world was a ceaseless passion to learn.
For those who wish to learn are granted the greatest powers of all.

Focus Point

As I stared into the dusty, jet black viewfinder, I placed my finger on a small,
silver bump at the edge of the large camera body that sat on my sandy hands.
There, in front of my lens was a gloomy and hazy scenery that obstructed my
vivid insight. Thunderous sounds emitted from the waves, as they sloshed
up and down the shore. Towards the very edge of my camera, my finger sat
lightly on the wet, silver shutter button. A large glistening wave, suddenly
came onto shore reaching up to my ankles. Icy Atlantic water engulfed my legs
like vines hugging a building. A cool gust of wind hit me, leaving me shivering. I
quickly wrapped my hand around the uneven and grooved ring that looped
around my lens. My hand turned right, focusing the camera with a high-pitched
screech, to reveal a perfect shot just in time of a wave about to hit the shore with
a loud swish. The gratifying buzz of my camera as the shutter opened and closed,

left me with a slightly large grin.
