Judging the performance of the Vision Pro from a 30-minute demo wouldn’t be possible, but from my experience so far, it has everything it needs to be exceptional. It was incredibly smooth and consistent; stuttering is a word that does not exist in its vocabulary. Virtual reality headsets have significantly improved over the years, moving from devices that more often than not caused motion sickness – especially when used for more than a few minutes – to much faster refresh rates on the displays, allowing them to deliver a more fluid experience overall, but Vision Pro is on a different level. It offered such a smooth performance that motion sickness was never on my radar and the only side effect I had following my briefing was trying to digest what I had just experienced. Even turning the Digital Crown to move between the virtual world and the real world was a gentle and natural feeling, gliding between the environments seamlessly. There were very few things I disliked about Vision Pro, but FaceTime was one. The digital persona of someone in the Apple Park offices several hundred metres from my demo was impressive, but the overall FaceTime experience with this person was much more impersonal than what you get on iPhone and iPad. More like talking to a robot than a real person, with unnatural and awkward smiling and laughing from the digital persona and some lag too. Put it this way, I wouldn’t choose FaceTime on Vision Pro over iPhone as yet. MARCH 2024 T3 51 Performance PERFORMANCE

While the design, displays and gesture controls are achievements in themselves, Vision Pro’s greatest victory so far, is content. Apple didn’t focus on gaming, but it didn’t have to because whether it’s watching back Spatial Video, sitting in the centre of 180-degree 3D 8K videos with Apple Immersive Video or transporting you to incredible places within the Environments mode, the content is mind-blowing. From watching a tear-jerking Spatial Video of a child’s birthday party and witnessing how realistic – and therefore special – the experience could be for loved ones far away, to the Environments mode that took me to the edge of a blissfully calm lake in Mount Hood, the potential here is unhinged. Avatar 2 in 3D was absolutely exceptional on Vision Pro, and the Cinema mode makes you feel like you’re in the best seat in the house with no distractions. That’s nothing compared to sport and concerts however. My demo took me right behind the hoop at a basketball game to next to the piano at an intimate Alicia Keyes concert, before launching me under water with sharks and onto a tightrope thousands of feet in the air. Add to allthose experiences that Disney is a partner for Vision Pro, allowing you to watch Disney’s fantastic library of films in 3D and with such incredible detail, and you have a device that may not sell as many units as iPhone, butthat will change the world of computing as we know it. Justlike the Macintosh did 40 years ago. One of the Vision Pro’s greatest triumphs is that it doesn’t require additional controls to interact with the VisionOS interface. All you need is your eyes, your hands, and getting accustomed to a light pinch and drag gesture. What was perhaps the most surprising about these elements of Vision Pro was how quickly the interface responded and the app icons ‘popped’ when glanced at, to how natural the gesture became after seconds, whether swiping through photos or moving things around the spatial environment. It’s incredibly disappointing things in the real world don’t subtly bounce when I look at them now, or move when I pinch and drag. The 12 cameras and five sensors within the Vision Pro are remarkable at tracking your eyes and hands. The only time I noticed gesture control not being recognised properly was when my hands were too close together in my lap, meaning the cameras and sensors weren’t able to see the movements clearly. There is an initial setup process but it’s a matter of minutes. For eye calibration you follow dots around the Vision Pro’s screen a couple of times, while hand calibration involves holding both hands up for a few seconds. What’s notable is how subtle the pinch and drag gesture could be and how minor a glance needed to be for the Vision Pro to register. The VisionOS interface is also exceptionally familiar instantly. How a brand new device, brand new interface and a brand new category could feel immediately natural was surprising. 52 T3 MARCH 2024 Apple VisionPro EYE-TRACKING & GESTURE CONTROL IMMERSIVE VIDEO CONTENT

58 T3 MARCH 2024 Massive workoutpowerups 6TIPSFORSUSTAINABLEGAINS Personal trainer and sports scientist Dr Milo Wolf believes there are smart ways to train that save time and offer a shortcut to gains in size and strength 1 PREPARE TO FAIL This essentially means work as hard as you can with good form, taking every set of whatever exercise you are doing to failure or as close as possible. “By taking each set to failure, you are making each set more stimulative,” Dr Wolf states. 2 TRY COMPOUND MOVEMENTS Plan a workout that involves exercises that incorporate a number of muscle groups. Things like the squat, the deadlift, the bench press and the pull-up all fall into this camp and can help stimulate overall growth better than specialist isolation exercises that generally take a lot longer to see results. 3 TRAIN BILATERALLY ‘Train bilaterally’ is sports science talk for prioritising those exercises that work both VLGHV RI \RXU ERG\ UDWKHU WKDQ KRQLQJ LQ RQ single leg or arm movements. “When you DUH DW D SRLQW ZKHUH \RX QHHG WR DGGUHVV symmetry or an unbalance in strength, WKHQ \RX FDQ PRYH RQ WR XQLODWHUDO ZRUN but bilateral is just as good for seeing UHVXOWV DQG LWèV D PRUH HIĆFLHQW XVH RI WLPHë Dr Wolf says. 4 THE AGNOSTIC PUMP Supersets are a brilliant way to save time, without scrimping on the exercises. The best warm-up is simply performing light reps of the exercise in question. The good news is, your muscle doesn’t care what piece of equipment you use to stimulate it,” he adds.

MARCH 2024 T3 59 KnoxRobinson Mat Gallager talks to the charismatic iFit trainer about his training style, RPE, long-distance races and mindfulness in running KNOXROBINSON FIT has a wealth of talented trainers at its disposal but none have quite the style and charisma of Knox Robinson. The New York native has chalked up nearly 100 videos on the platform, with series visiting South Africa, Kenya, Mexico City and many more. His authentic and relaxed style has made him a popular choice for new and advanced runners alike, both on the iFIT platform and beyond. So we were keen to find out more about the advice Robinson would give those looking to either start or take their running up a notch in 2024. RATE OF PERCEIVED EXERTION One of the main measurements used across all iFIT workouts is the rate of perceived exertion or RPE. This allows runners, as well as cyclists and rowers, to put in an effort relative to their ability rather than try to hit a certain speed. “RPE is great because it is a metric to get us to learn how to run on feel,” says Robinson. “It’s an incredibly instructive tool from day one that we can use to understand what’s happening with our bodies and minds.” The level of RPE is personal – your RPE won’t be the same as another user’s RPE, or your iFit trainer’s RPE, but the relative level of effort will be the same. The RPE scale on iFit runs from one to 10, with warm-up jogs normally around a four, steady runs at a five or six, and faster sprints hitting an eight or nine. Some trainers break this down by heart rate; for instance, a five RPE is considered a maximum of 77% of your maximum heart rate. STARTING YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY The biggest challenge for any fitness journey is often how to begin. So how can you get started? “Not to take all the oxygen out of the room, but it is just putting one foot in front of the other,” says Robinson. “I get it. I live in the world and I have a litany of reasons why I can’t do this or can’t do that.” One of Knox’s big inspirations though was Kenyan long-distance runner, Eliud Kipchoge. “I was there in Monza in 2017 when he first attempted a two-hour marathon and fell just short by 26 seconds,” says Robinson. “As he crossed the line, it started to rain and I had to put my sunglasses on because I started to cry. My first thought was: ‘Wow, what are the i excuses that I’m holding onto? What can I let go of to break a barrier for myself?’” Whether you’re a champion runner or someone figuring out how to start a fitness journey, Knox says it’s important to understand the barriers, but know that it does begin with putting one foot in front of the other. “That expression, we make the road by walking. I like to say we make the road by jogging,” adds Robinson. For those who already run, taking it to the next level can also be a challenge. According to Knox, whether you’re aiming for a 5K, 10K or more, consistency is key. “It’s unromantic and I’ve tried to put lipstick on it over the years, but I’m always going to tell you the truth,” says Robinson. That doesn’t necessarily mean running every day. In fact, according to Knox, part of the journey is understanding what consistency means to you. “We have to follow the journey with consistency, but we also have to give ourselves grace,” says Robinson. “Giving yourself grace means withholding judgement. That’s what I talk about in a lot of the series. Hold back from judging yourself harshly, hold back from judging what’s going on in your body.” MINDFULNESS IN RUNNING Whether you’re looking to run 5k, 10k or an ultra marathon, the process is the same. Knox says that rather than the distance, it’s actually the space that’s hard. “I was talking with an athlete and he was like: ‘Ah, the marathon’s such and such until mile 22. And then it got really rough, and I started thinking about all my life decisions and all the bad things I did in fifth grade,’” says Robinson. “And I was like, well, now you know what you have to work on. It’s your presence of mind and your mindfulness.” According to Knox, the reason ultra distances are more intense is because of the space to fill. “That’s why sometimes I just don’t say anything and leave you with your heartbeat,” says Robinson. “But I do that at the end of the series when we’ve built the momentum, we’ve built the trust. For you and I to run in silence for 10 minutes is a very intense and galvanising spiritual experience.” While many of the iFit trainers have produced videos from locations known for mindfulness and meditation, Knox adds a moment of mindfulness at the start of his workouts, giving users a minute to walk in silence and reflect on their thoughts. “I really started bringing that mindful moment into the workouts,” says Robinson. This method is perfect for someone who’s not a fan of a shouty trainer, telling you to give it 110%. It’s almost the complete opposite of that and it’s part of what makes iFit and trainers like Knox Robinson so interesting. “That’s what’s cool about iFit, it’s actually rewriting the whole thing,” says Robinson. “The machines are incredible, the trainers are incredible, the community is incredible. The locations are epic. All those constituent parts are rewriting the whole connected fitness narrative. So if we’re doing that, if we’re writing a new code, why wouldn’t we bring our best innovations to the practice, starting with a mindfulness practice that’s commensurate with a fitness journey?” You can find Knox Robinson’s training sessions on iFit.com and compatible machines, from brands including NordicTrack, Pro-Form, Freemotion, Wieder and Matrix. “Hold back from judging yourself harshly, judging what’s going oninyour body”

Of course you do, but you are going to need some deep pockets to make it happen. So what can you expectif you decide to make the move to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra? Let’s start by talking about the asking price. Make no mistake the Ultra is no budget device. But, in our opinion it represents good value with the upgrades the 2024 model brings. And it’s worth noting that Apple’s equivalent, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, is even pricier than the S24. Forgetting the price, what else does the graceful Samsung have to offer? The titanium build is particularly eye-catching. It’s a very different finish compared to its predecessor, and is far more matte and subdued – but physically tougher. And it’s a wholly different look to the smaller Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus models. There are four main colours for the Ultra – Titanium Violet, Titanium Yellow, Titanium Black, D

MARCH 2024 T3 71 Samsung Galaxy S24Ultra Titanium Grey. They look a bit washed-out where the more prominent yellow and purple hues are concerned, but we think the silverygrey Titanium Grey looks superb and is the pick of the bunch. The Ultra model in Samsung’s range has become a bit of an icon for the figure it cuts, and while the S24 Ultra is a whisker wider (but also thinner) than before, nobody will notice this by eye. It does feel bigger in hand, though, on account of the now flat-panel display – there’s no edge ‘softening’ from a curve. But we don’t mind this, as the panel’s edges don’t suffer contrast fall-off and the included S Pen will simply make more sense for those who use it frequently. The display, at 6.8 inches across the diagonal, isn’t fundamentally different in terms of size or resolution though. It is, however, a new display – because it’s even brighter than its predecessor with a maximum peak output of 2600 nits (although that’ll be recorded from an isolated section). Still, that’s a massive figure that’s approaching the levels of the best OLED TVs. The refresh rate maxes out at 120Hz but is also variable down to 1Hz in order to save battery as needed. Adding to the titanium toughness, the S24 Ultra is coated in Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, which is said to be stronger than the brand’s Victus 2 finish, but also reduces reflections by up to 75%. Clearly this is a great feature for the when the sun’s out. But to keep the handset looking pristine a case might be needed. We mention this because a S23 Ultra case won’t fit thanks to the new display. Show of strength Under the hood there is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor for Galaxy (meaning it’s tuned for Samsung, ie overclocked) giving optimum power that can’t be bettered right now. Keeping the processor company is the S24 Ultra’s battery, which remains the same as its predecessor with a 5,000mAh capacity cell and USB-C charging (at 45W). It’s just about quick enough, but we do wish Samsung would re-invest in pursuing yet faster-charging options – especially when its competition is just so much further ahead in this regard. Whenever we test one of the best Samsung phones, we always have to give them a little grace period to settle down. Battery life was pretty volatile for the first couple of days of using the S24 Ultra, as is typical, but we’ve found that the system settles down by assigning certain apps to the ‘sleep stack’ so that longevity is actually very solid per charge. Not the best you’ll get of any phone on the market, but easily good enough for a full day of high-end use. In our tests we were able to use the device part-time as a mobile hotspot, use Bluetooth to play some tunes, play some mobile games, browse some pages, and do various degrees of work. After 8 hours the battery had dropped 40%. Work aside the battery still had 20% remaining in the tank at the end of the day. A good innings without the need to compromise use. Power-wise there’s no doubt that the S24 Ultra lives up to its billing too: 7KH 6 KDV RQH RI WKH PRVW SRZHUIXO SURFHVVRUV RQ WKH PDUNHW ULJKW QRZ TIGHT-ANIUM Not only does the S24 Ultra’s iPhonebaiting titanium build look slick but it really boosts its toughness. 72 T3 MARCH 2024 Tested unlike with the Google Pixel 8 Pro. We were able to get silky smooth gaming across a variety of titles, from go-to favourites such as South Park: Phone Destroyer, to new titles such as Plants V Zombies 3 and Mighty Doom (the last of which is rather demanding based on our experiences playing it on other devices). There’s a little heat from the S24 Ultra’s body, sure, but nothing of concern. When it comes to the suite of Galaxy AI features, we’re also largely impressed. We must say, however, that we’ve been using many equivalents of these on Google Pixel devices for some time. The live transcription, for example, doesn’t feel new, but it is great to have on a Galaxy product. It can even translate from 13 languages, which is amazing – whether written or spoken. We used it in a mock-up scenario over a phone call, speaking in English to a Korean speaker, and while there’s a natural pause while the device reads back in your local language, it’s still mighty impressive. Multiple viewpoints While the S24 Ultra’s rear may look identical to its predecessor’s, it’s what’s within that assortment of lenses that’s impressed us more than before. That’s because Samsung has, finally, dropped the 10x optical zoom lens from the equation, presumably because data revealed that people just don’t really use such significant optical zooms that often. In its place, however, is a new 5x optical zoom lens with a 50-megapixel sensor at its core, representing a much more rounded proposition for most people. The quality is honestly streets ahead of the older sensor, which was an ongoing bugbear of ours in the earlier models. THE FINE DETAILS The S24 Ultra’s camera system may look the same from the outside but there’s plenty of changes under the surface. The 10x optical zoom is gone, replaced with a much higher-res 50MP 5x optical zoom.

MARCH 2024 T3 73 Samsung Galaxy S24Ultra It’s really easy to zoom between the 0.5x, 1x, 3x, 5x and digital 10x options within the app – or even beyond, all the way up to 100x. That’s all great, although we’re unsure that the 3x lens in this guise needs to exist (though it does benefit from closer-up focal capabilities than the 5x). Samsung has been able to keep the consistency between this array of cameras really on point too, so results feel like they’re borne of one camera system rather than a bunch of separates, which we really appreciate. The colours match up nicely and you don’t have to overthink – just point, shoot and let the camera do its magic. There are many more options if you wantto dig deeper, including Portrait mode (for enhanced bokeh blurred background), Pro, Expert Raw, Night and many more. The whole ‘Nightography’ is still exemplary: shootin low-light and there are no issues taking snaps. If you want a more high dynamic range (HDR) effectthen specifically selecting the longexposure Night mode does wonders in balancing out shadows and highlight – and is usable handheld too. The reason handheld shooting is so easy is thanks to the upgraded optical image stabilisation system on the S24 Ultra’s main sensor (it’s also present on the zoom lenses in a slightly different guise). The predecessor did a good job in keeping things nice and steady but the new camera is even more impressive. Even when using the zoom levels we had no problems holding shots steady, to the point you can almost feel it in the on-screen viewfinder. However, we found the new Galaxy AI photography features and results a mixed bag. Generative Edit, for example, can be hugely impressive in specific scenarios, able to remove distinct subjects and background replace with relative accuracy. But it’s all dependent on the shot, of course. We’ve successfully removed flower petals from a shot with a shallow depth of field, for example, but then struggled to remove the sidepositioned shadow of a shot that we assumed would be easily dealt with. It’s impressive in that few other brands offer this type of AI feature set, but Samsung still has plenty of room for improvement. There’s definitely scope here for these AI features to just grow and improve – and we have no doubt it’ll only get better and better. Best of the best Having lived with the Galaxy S24 Ultra for a while, we are totally sold on this latest version of the phone. And, frankly, more than a little bit in love with this flagship handset. We think Samsung’s design and feature advancements compared to the older model elevate it to whole new heights, placing it firmly as best-ofthe-best when it comes to Android phones. Despite strong competition, this flagship really is the jewel in Android’s crown for 2024. Only two ofthe four HDMI inputs are full-on HDMI 2.1 standard here, one of which is also responsible for eARC.They both support 4K at 120Hz, VRR and allthe rest of it, and if you’re a PlayStation 5 user there’s also ‘Auto HDR Tone Mapping’to deliver optimised high dynamic range performance – but nevertheless, some users are going to find this too restrictive. Response times are decent at a little under 20m/s. Dim some more This is, of course, a 4K LCD panelthat’s backlit using mini-LED.Thanks to their tininess, there are many more individual LEDs thatform the backlighting ofthe LCD panelthan in a regular LED/LCD television, and consequently many more individually controlled dimming zones – roughly 480 in this instance. This generates wide contrasts and properly controlled backlighting. Even when the X95L is given scrolling white text on a black background, it keeps its backlighting focused and controlled – blooming or haloing is at an absolute minimum, and as a consequence contrasts are impressive. It doesn’t do any harm in this regard thatthe Sony is capable of significant peak brightness even as it keeps black tones deep and convincing. HDR-assisted contentlooks vibrant but never overblown, and the X95L manages to combine smooth edgedefinition, considerable depth of field and grippily convincing motioncontrol without any visible signs of effort or stress. Even a difficult ask like televised sport, with its areas of uniform colour and unpredictable, multi-directional on-screen movement, doesn’t cause any alarms. And, in most cases, the X95L is an accomplished upscaler of less information-rich stuff, too. Full HD off-air broadcasts or Blu-ray discs barely suffer at all – perhaps the finest details go astray, and there’s a degree more uniformity about black tones than with native 4K content, butthe Sony is confident and watchable nevertheless. It’s only if you step down to some poverty-spec 480p thatthe X95L is powerless to preventimages getting soft and jagged. By prevailing standards, the X95L doesn’t sound too bad at all. Of course, it’s no match for a decent soundbar – buttake it on its own terms and it’s a reasonably composed and informative performer. Midrange resolution and projection is good, which means dialogue is always distinct and generally projects well. The Sony X95L is a very credible telly indeed. It gets the mostimportant factors right: that its picture-quality experience is impressive across the board, thanks to a well-controlled mini-LED panel. 78 T3 MARCH 2024 Tested Leica Sofort 2 £350 leica-camera.com one are the days when the instant camera market was just hipsters finding their parents’ old Polaroid. It is now peppered with hybrid instant cameras, like the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo, which offer the functionality of a traditional camera and an instant printer in one.Thatis the blueprint on which the Leica Sofort 2 is built. So, what does that £350 get you in the world of instant cameras? Well, a fair bit, actually. As mentioned, the Sofort 2 is a hybrid camera. That means you get a digital sensor on the front, with internal memory and a printer all in one box.The internal memory can store around 45 images, while a 1GB microSD card would allow for around 850 to be kept secure. Those can then be printed at will, from the playback section ofthe device. It packs a 1/5-inch CMOS sensor, which produces JPEG images with a 2560 x 1920 resolution. There’s no manual control ofthings like aperture, though itis automatically adjustable from f/2 up to f/16. Shutter speeds range from 1/4 of a second up to 1/8000 of a second, while the focus distance goes from around 10cm up to infinity. So, is it any good? Well, yes. Okay, the sensor isn’tthe highest quality for digital snaps – your phone is probably better there – but you probably aren’t buying this for its digital chops. When it comes to snapping images for instant printing, that CMOS sensor is more than good enough. In fact, the slightly lo-fi look helps give everything a more analogue feelthan it probably deserves. Perhaps the coolest bit ofthis camera is the range of effects. There are ten film styles and ten lens effects on offer – such as colour filters, vignettes and fisheye lenses – which combine to offer 100 different creative combos for your shot-snapping exploits. We found there were only a few that were really useful, though. We often took to the half-frame setting, as well as the colour shiftfor a more Tumblr-era aesthetic. Printing images is simple.
