THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 2 KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia aims to collaborate, share knowledge and acquire technology transfer from China and India in the use of thorium as nuclear fuel, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang. He said at present, the two countries are at the forefront of utilising this technology. Chang said the use of thorium as nuclear fuel is still in its early stages and no country has yet mastered the technology. “For example, in China, the thorium molten salt reactor is considered a fourth-generation reactor, which is the most advanced and safest to date. However, even there it is still in the development phase, and China’s small modular reactor (SMR) is only expected to be operational in 2029.” He was replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (PN-Kubang Kerian) on the use of thorium as nuclear fuel, in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. To another supplementary question from P. Prabakaran (PH-Batu) on the same issue, Chang said the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, through the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, has established a pilot plant for the extraction and purification of thorium from local minerals such as monazite, to explore its potential role in future fuel supply chains. Thorium is an element with potential applications in nuclear energy. Unlike uranium, it is more abundant, produces less long-lived radioactive waste and has a higher melting point, making it attractive for next-generation nuclear reactors, particularly molten salt reactors. Chang said the ministry has been involved in SMR capacity development since 2024 through a United States programme - Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology. He said the programme supports countries interested in exploring the potential of SMRs and advanced nuclear technology while ensuring that nuclear technology usage meets the highest safety standards, with backing from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) statutes. Addressing Prabakaran’s original question on nuclear cooperation with other countries, Chang said Malaysia supports and plays an active role in the peaceful development and use of nuclear science and technology, both internationally and nationally, Bernama reported. He added that Malaysia has been involved in multilateral collaborations with international organisations since the country joined the IAEA in 1969. “The ministry, through the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, has also been a member of the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (Inpro) under IAEA cooperation since 2012. Inpro consists of 47 member countries, including Japan and France.” Chang said through Inpro, the country and other members are involved in long-term projects and collaborations on innovations in reactors, fuel cycles and institutional approaches that promote the sustainable development of nuclear energy. Govt boosting efforts to combat transnational crimes KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is strengthening efforts to combat transnational crimes, particularly cybercrime, through strategic cooperation with several foreign countries by way of extradition processes and treaties, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. He said Malaysia is collaborating with countries such as Indonesia and Thailand to expedite the extradition of fugitives involved in various crimes, including cybercrime. “Through Asean platforms such as the Asean Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime and Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crimes, Malaysia plays a key role in leading several working groups, particularly in the areas of maritime piracy, human smuggling and money laundering, Bernama reported. “These platforms facilitate discussions on transnational crime, the exchange of intelligence and the development of collaborative strategies among Asean member states to address these challenges,” he said in the Dewan Negara. He was responding to Senator Rita Sarimah Patrick Insol’s question on government cooperation with other Asean nations to tackle cyber fraud, illegal gambling and cross-border criminal activities. Shamsul Anuar said several bilateral meetings have also been held, through the Asean National Police to facilitate information sharing on crime syndicates, enabling operations to be carried out based on real-time intelligence. “The success of this collaboration is evident in joint operations between the police and foreign law enforcement agencies. The exchange of information among Asean nations has significantly enhanced efforts to curb cybercrime and other transnational criminal activities more efficiently.” He said Malaysia also strengthens its global partnerships via MoUs and agreements with other countries such as the US and China. The suit was filed over Ahmad Amzad’s alleged defamatory statement that Anwar lied when he said he only received a salary of RM1 when he was the Selangor economic adviser. Lawyer Datuk S.N. Nair, representing Anwar, said both parties reached an out-of-court settlement and agreed to issue a public statement. “The settlement was recorded before Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Gani at the Kuala Terengganu High Court today (March 5),” Nair said in a statement. He said both parties agreed to end the dispute after considering the impact of the suit as well as the legal costs that they would incur since many bigger or more important issues need attention. He added that it followed Ahmad Amzad’s action to withdraw the statement made by him on Dec 7, 2022. He said the settlement is a mutual agreement, and Anwar withdrew the suit with no liberty to refile and with no order as to costs. Nair said both parties conveyed their appreciation to the judge and court officers involved and expressed hope that the decision would be accepted and respected by all parties and not be turned into something that could jeopardise prosperity and harmony in Malaysia. In the statement of claim filed on Dec 22, 2022, Anwar, who is also PKR president, claimed that Ahmad Amzad had made several statements to a group of customers while dining at a restaurant on Dec 7. Anwar said the statements implied, among other things, that he was untrustworthy and dishonest about receiving millions of ringgit from the Selangor government when he was its economic adviser. It also implied that he deceived the public by stating that he received a salary of RM1 as an economic adviser, committed a criminal offence and betrayed the people’s mandate. Anwar claimed that the slanderous statements were false, malicious and disparaging, adding that he was highly respected nationally and internationally as someone who is against corruption. He also denounced allegations that he was politically motivated. – Bernama Anwar to visit states for Madani iftar KUALA LUMPUR: Starting next week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be visiting various states to attend Madani iftar events. His senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said in each state Anwar would also chair a special state development meeting with key state leaders and agencies. “He has emphasised that the agenda to eradicate hardcore poverty remains his top priority in discussions with state government leaders and agencies,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) daily briefing, which was streamed live on Anwar and PMO Malaysia’s Facebook pages yesterday. Tunku Nashrul said efforts would be made to increase incomes of target groups, job opportunities, access to education, healthcare, housing and living standards. He said as of Dec 31, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Perlis had successfully achieved zero hardcore poverty. – Bernama CASUAL EXCHANGE ... THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 3 Move to delay new shift for nurses lauded SEREMBAN: The decision by the Health Ministry to request for a moratorium on the implementation of 45-hour shifts involving nurses has been deemed an appropriate move for all parties to provide their views. Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Dr Adnan Mat expressed confidence that the matter would be handled properly by the government, ensuring the health delivery system to the public would not be affected. “Cuepacs will provide its views to the government in the near future regarding the matters raised by all parties. The (moratorium) period is able to ease the situation and provide space for giving views and suggestions, and achieving a win-win decision.” He was speaking after attending the Negeri Sembilan Wakaf Month event officiated by Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Aziz Sheikh Ab Kadir on Tuesday. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was reported to have said he would apply for a moratorium on the interim period for the shift implementation. He said he took into account that the Public Service Department had approved an interim period between Dec 1 and Feb 28 and during the interim period, the ministry had conducted public engagement and dialogue sessions according to zones nationwide. “We have received the feedback on the 45-hour shift and it is being studied so that the level of health delivery to the people is not affected.” – Bernama RM12.7b unclaimed money recorded KUALA LUMPUR: The Accountant-General’s Department recorded RM12.7 billion in unclaimed money as of Jan 31, according to the Finance Ministry. In a written reply on the Parliament website, the ministry said heirs or individuals who are entitled to the money can submit claim applications online via the official eGUMIS portal at egumis.anm.gov.my or at department counters. It was responding to a question from S. Kesavan (PH-Sungai Siput) on the latest amount of unclaimed money, the process involved in claiming it and the steps taken by the government to inform owners or heirs. According to the ministry, awareness campaigns, online briefings and periodic announcements via national TV channels are being carried out so that more owners or heirs are aware of the existence of the money. To facilitate the claim process, check and refund counter services have been expanded to 24 state departments and branches nationwide, in addition to the department counter in Putrajaya and at UTC Pudu. It said the move would enable the public to check and submit claim applications more easily and quickly. – Bernama Nine Sarawak highway packages completed and open to traffic KUALA LUMPUR: Nine out of 11 packages under Phase One of the Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway, spanning 641km, have been completed and are open to traffic, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi told the Dewan Negara yesterday. Among the completed sections is WPC02, which runs from Sematan to Jambatan Sungai Moyan and was finished on March 25 last year. He said WPC08, a 63km stretch from Jambatan Sungai Kua to Jambatan Sungai Arip, was finished on Aug 2 last year while WPC09, spanning 65km from Jambatan Sungai Arip to the Bintulu Airport intersection, was completed on Nov 5. He was responding to Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim, who asked about the progress of Phase One of the project. Alexander said the remaining sections, WPC06 (65km) and WPC11 (80km), excluding the Lambir section in Miri, are scheduled for completion in the second and fourth quarters of this year respectively. The 4km Lambir section requires a redesign and is expected to be completed by October 2027. On a separate matter, the government has allocated RM40 million to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to carry out a maintenance project for 302 tube well water systems in rural schools across Sabah and Sarawak this year. Education Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh said his ministry, in collaboration with the Sabah and Sarawak governments as well as the Public Works Department, has undertaken the construction and installation of tube well water systems in remote areas of both states. “Since 2021, the approved contract allocation for this initiative stands at RM94.5 million. Under this project, 90 schools have been identified, with 79 in Sabah and 11 in Sarawak. “Construction is underway, with physical progress for 64 schools averaging 59.85%. The project is set for completion within two years and is expected to be completed by this year.” He was responding to a question from Datuk Larry Sng (PBM-Julau) regarding the ministry’s efforts to ensure rural schools, particularly those without access to clean water, receive adequate supply. Wong said this year, 16 schools have been approved to modify their project scope and incorporate atmospheric water generator (AWG) technology. He added that the department is finalising the supplemental agreement to implement the new scope while approvals for AWG implementation in 10 schools in Sabah are in progress. He added that RM30.6 million was spent last year on maintaining 302 tube well water systems for rural schools in Sabah and Sarawak. – Bernama Potential miscarriage link to mercury in skincare products PETALING JAYA: The dangers of mercury-laced skincare products go far beyond skin damage, with experts warning that they could pose significant risks to pregnant women and their unborn babies. Universiti Putra Malaysia obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Nurul Iftida Basri said mercury absorbed through the skin could cross the placenta, leading to neurological and kidney abnormalities in developing foetuses. Citing research, she said women exposed to high mercury levels are at greater risk of miscarriages. “This could be due to an increased release of oxidative radicals, which may affect foetal development.” She said detecting mercury poisoning in the body during pregnancy is a major challenge because it presents only subtle symptoms. “There are no obvious symptoms but women who have used mercury-containing skincare products for an extended period may experience allergic reactions, rashes, skin peeling or itching.” It has been reported that women who used skincare products containing mercury during pregnancy have experienced miscarriages, raising concerns on the potential link between the two. Nurul Iftida added that if a pregnant woman has unknowingly used skincare products containing mercury, she should discontinue use immediately and undergo close monitoring. “The pregnancy should be monitored for foetal growth due to the risk of having a low-birthweight baby. There is also the risk of preterm birth, so early treatment should be sought if there are signs of premature labour.” She explained that the primary impact of mercury exposure on foetuses is on neurological development, which could result in low IQ and decreased memory, attention, language skills and spatial cognition. “The first trimester appears to be the most vulnerable period for mercury exposure. There is a lack of research to determine the most critical period but since embryological development occurs in the first trimester, Chang warned that the dangers of mercury exposure also apply to others, not just pregnant women. – AMIRUL SYAFIQ/THESUN oPregnant women advised to be cautious in personal care items use and avoid those that may harm foetus Ű BY DEEPALAKSHMI MANICKAM [email protected] I would say early pregnancy carries a higher risk compared with later stages.” She advised pregnant women to exercise caution when selecting skincare products, emphasising the importance of avoiding ingredients that may harm foetal development. “Pregnant women should also avoid ingredients such as retinol, hydroquinone, Vitamin A, tetracycline and salicylic acid. It is always best to consult a doctor before using any skincare products during pregnancy.” Selayang Hospital Dermatology Head Dr Elizabeth Chang warned that the dangers of mercury exposure also apply to others, not just pregnant women. Many women suffer from long-term mercury poisoning, often without realising its effects until it causes significant harm, such as tremors, memory loss or kidney damage, she added. “Some users develop extreme sensitivity after stopping these products, leaving their skin dry, irritated and unable to tolerate basic skincare. “Some continue using mercury-laced creams, unaware that they are worsening their condition.” She said the path to recovery requires patience and proper care, with the first step being cessation of mercury exposure completely. “Gentle, fragrance-free moisturisers with ceramides and niacinamide could help repair the skin.” She said ingredients such as Vitamin C and azelaic acid could manage hyperpigmentation but strict sun protection is crucial. She also emphasised the need for stronger enforcement against illegal beauty products. “Despite regulations, mercury-laced creams are easily available online. Consumers must be cautious and avoid anything that promises instant whitening. No beauty trend is worth compromising your long-term health.” She said while the Health Ministry has been imposing bans on harmful beauty products, they continue to flood the market through online platforms and informal sellers. “Stronger enforcement, stricter penalties and increased consumer awareness are crucial to address their use and safeguarding public health.”

THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 4 Consumers urged to adopt smart spending habits PETALING JAYA: The public are advised to adopt smarter spending habits to avoid impulsive purchases and overspending during the fasting month at Ramadan bazaars. With about 40 bazaars in Kuala Lumpur alone – drawing large crowds eager to explore diverse food offerings – the abundance of choices can lead to unplanned spending. Universiti Teknologi Mara department of economics and financial studies senior lecturer Dr Mohamad Idham Md Razak said such behaviour can be controlled by using pre-commitment techniques such as cash-only budgets and organised shopping lists to curb unnecessary expenses. “Implementing fixed income percentage spending limits and practicing delayed gratification by returning to stalls after an initial viewing helps prevent overspending. “It aligns with the ‘nudge theory’, which subtly guides consumer behaviour while preserving individual choice, ensuring smarter financial decisions during festive shopping,” he said. A check by theSun at several bazaars in the Klang Valley revealed noticeable price increases for various food items compared with last year. For example, a serving of chicken briyani, previously priced at RM10, now costs RM15, while Roti John, a popular Ramadan favourite which used to be RM8 to RM10, is now RM12. Many food hawkers highlighted factors such as rising costs of raw materials and rental fees for their stalls as reasons for the price hike, resulting in consumers spending more for the same meals. Mohamad Idham said comparing prices helps consumers make cost-effective choices, reducing personal expenses while pressuring vendors to maintain competitive pricing, ultimately improving market transparency. “Spontaneous buying at bazaars redirects money away from necessary expenses, while causing short-term spending to increase at the cost of financial savings,” he said. He added that the high demand for certain Nur Asyikin said adopting prudent spending habits helps maintain personal finances and reduces environmental impact. – ADAM AMIR HAMZAH/THESUN oBudgeting, price comparison and mindful purchasing can help curb overspending: Experts Ű BY QIRANA NABILLA MOHD RASHIDI [email protected] Penang becoming top destination for Indian nationals CHENNAI: Penang is rapidly emerging as a top destination for weddings and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), particularly drawing Indian visitors, especially from South India. Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekaran said the state’s appeal has been further strengthened by the launch of a direct flight route from Chennai to Penang by IndiGo Airlines, which began on Dec 21 last year. “Destination weddings typically involve a minimum of 250 guests and we continue to receive requests for such events. The demand is particularly high for beach destinations and mainland hotel venues, which have been receiving positive responses. “The Indian tourists arriving in Penang belong to new segments for us, including solo travellers, honeymooners and families,” he said at a press conference during a media familiarisation trip to Chennai, organised by PCEB on Tuesday. Also present was PCEB director Wong Yuee Harng, who is also the Pengkalan Kota assemblyman. Ashwin said Penang’s reputation as a MICE destination is growing, with key events such as a yoga and wellness conference in April, followed by another conference expected to attract 500 participants from Tamil Nadu. Earlier this year, Penang’s rising popularity for business and leisure events was evident when the state hosted the 11th Global Organisation of Tamil Origin conference on Jan 4 and 5, marking the first time the event was held outside Tamil Nadu. The conference welcomed 1,000 delegates from Singapore, India, Myanmar and other countries. Meanwhile, Ashwin expressed confidence that Penang will soon attract Kollywood (Tamil film industry) filmmakers, leveraging extra financial incentives under the Film In Malaysia Incentive by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia. “I believe one of the key challenges in bringing Kollywood productions to Penang previously was the lack of direct flights. “Whenever we engaged with directors and producers, logistical issues and transit delays – having to fly via Kuala Lumpur before reaching Penang – were always a concern,” he said. However, Ashwin noted that with IndiGo’s new direct flight to Penang, discussions on film productions in the state have gained momentum once again. IndiGo’s direct route from Chennai to Penang offers a comfortable flying experience with full-flat business class seats and in-flight entertainment systems. Significantly, Penang International Airport recorded a 51.43% increase in Indian tourist arrivals last year, reflecting the growing interest in the state as a vibrant destination. – Bernama Public encouraged to use new buses in Kuching KUCHING: The public is encouraged to experience the new Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) buses, which have recently begun operations from the Open Air station here. Sarawak transport minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project will introduce 56 stage buses across 10 routes in phases to further enhance public transport services in the city. “Today, the bus company is starting with six buses. Actually, it’s 10 but four are not operating yet. Another batch of 26 buses will arrive by the end of March and another 20 buses by the end of April. “These modern buses are equipped with CCTV, low-deck accessibility for persons with disabilities (OKU), and GPS tracking. We hope more people will use the buses to help reduce traffic congestion in the city,” he said. Lee added that the bus service also features the BAS.MY concession card system, allowing senior citizens, OKU card holders and students to ride on SBST buses for free. “SBST also introduces a prepaid card system valued at RM50, valid for 30 days, with unlimited rides on all its buses. “The Sarawak ministry of transport is working closely with the Transport Ministry to ensure the smooth implementation of public transport modernisation and transformation in Sarawak, and we hope it will be extended to other parts of the state,” Lee said. On Tuesday, the state’s Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board announced that the first route, Q10, will run from Open Air Market to Serian. – Bernama Developer implements measures after landslide incident BINTULU: The developer of a new residential area has agreed to implement three key measures to mitigate safety hazards following a recent landslide that affected Taman Belle Hill. Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the first measure involves the continuation of retaining wall construction, supervised by an appointed consultancy firm, as a primary strategy to prevent further landslides. In a statement, Tiong said the developer’s consultant will submit safety design plans to the Bintulu Development Authority for approval before proceeding with further construction. Additionally, the developer has pledged to assist in repairing damaged homes in the affected area. The recent landslide at Taman Belle Hill caused damage to several homes, posing a significant risk to residents and their properties. Tiong, who is also the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, sent his special officer, Steven Kong, to assess the site after receiving complaints from affected residents. – Bernama foods during Ramadan puts pressure on supply chains, causing temporary price increases. “Prices usually stabilise after the festive season, but ongoing supply issues or hoarding can keep costs high, creating price instability similar to what is seen in unpredictable markets,” he said. The price dynamics at bazaars are influenced by seasonal factors as sellers take advantage of the once-a-year demand for traditional goods to increase prices, knowing consumers are less sensitive to price changes during this period. “During Ramadan, price spikes for certain ingredients and products become more pronounced due to seasonal scarcity. “Price comparison and budget tracking apps, such as MAE by Maybank, help reduce information gaps, allowing users to make quick and informed decisions,” he said. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations chief operating officer Nur Asyikin Aminuddin said while complaints about overpriced items at bazaars remain low as the fasting month has just begun, some consumers have already raised concerns. “We have received feedback regarding food items not aligning with advertised prices. This, along with complaints about high prices and poor quality, creates an unfair situation for consumers and could lead to dissatisfaction,” she said. Nur Asyikin urged vendors to practice ethical pricing and maintain food quality to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for all consumers. She also called on sellers to display prices clearly in a way that is easily visible to consumers, ensuring transaction transparency and allowing consumers to make informed decisions before purchasing. “Consumers should be mindful of their budget when making purchases. If the price of food does not match its quality, a complaint can be filed with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. “Consumers are also encouraged to be more disciplined by purchasing only what they need to reduce food and money wastage,” she said. She added that adopting mindful spending habits helps maintain personal finances and reduces environmental impact, as food wastage is an increasingly important issue, especially during Ramadan.

THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 5 Prison Dept uncovers fake officers syndicate KUALA LUMPUR: The Prison Department has uncovered a syndicate impersonating prison officers to solicit money from families and relatives of inmates to provide them with “special meals”. The scam was detected after the department received several complaints from victims who had received suspicious text messages via WhatsApp from various mobile phone numbers. “The syndicate members reportedly pose as prison officers, using fake aliases such as Sjn Haziq, Sjn Akmal, Sjn Nazri, Sjn Zul, Sjn Sani, Sjn Zam and other fabricated names to deceive family members or relatives of inmates. “They also use multiple mule bank accounts to receive money from their victims,” the department said in a statement. The affected families have lodged police reports and the Prison Department will cooperate with police in their investigation, it added. The department has advised families and relatives of inmates not to transfer money to unknown individuals or bank accounts, and report any suspicious messages to police, as well as notify the department for further action. It also stated that it will not compromise on any negligence or procedural lapses, adding that strict action would be taken against those responsible. “The department is committed to ensuring the safety of inmates and their families from falling victim to scams. – Bernama Radio hosts queried by Bukit Aman KUALA LUMPUR: Six individuals, comprising three Era FM radio announcers and staff from the radio station, presented themselves at the Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday to provide statements regarding a video that appeared to mock a religious ceremony. The three announcers arrived at 10.30am, while their colleagues arrived separately. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the Bukit Aman Classified Crime Investigation Unit is handling the investigation. A total of 44 police reports have been lodged nationwide over the video, and the case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Razarudin said checks revealed that the video had been viewed 95,400 times and shared by 204 social media users. Following widespread criticism, the radio announcers issued an apology. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to conduct a thorough investigation following the complaints. – Bernama Woman killed in landslide incident KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed in a landslide in Kampung Lok Bonu, Jalan Sepanggar here early yesterday. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement it received a call about the incident at 4.32am and 10 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu fire station rushed to the scene. “Upon arriving at the location, the team found that a landslide had occurred and buried a house. “A woman, who was buried, was removed from the rubble by the team and confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers.” Her son was also found at the scene and did not suffer any injuries. The remains of the victim and her son were handed to police for further action. – Bernama Power supply to 470 online gambling premises cut JOHOR BAHRU: A total of 470 online gambling premises in Johor have had their electricity supply disconnected since January 2024 until Feb 26. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said 88 business licences involved in the activities were also revoked by local authorities throughout the period. He added that the authorities have submitted a request to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block access to websites involved in the activities. “This effort reflects the continued commitment of the authorities to ensure that gambling crimes can be eradicated for the well-being of the community,” Kumar said in a statement. He added that the latest operation to cut electricity supply took place on Feb 25 and 26, involving 86 premises. He said the operation was conducted under Section 21A of the Open Gambling House Act 1953, involving 64 senior and junior police officers, 48 Tenaga Nasional Berhad staff and seven local authority officials. He also said the Iskandar Puteri area recorded the highest number of premises, with 19, followed by South Johor Bahru with 14, Kota Tinggi with 11, North Johor Bahru with 10, Muar with seven, Batu Pahat with six, Pontian with five, Kluang and Kulai with four, Segamat with three, Mersing with two and one in Tangkak. “Equipment was also seized from seven premises in Muar, and one in Tangkak, while eight premises had their licences revoked during the operation.” Kumar added that the authorities will not tolerate any form of gambling activity, and will continue to monitor and inspect premises to curb such activities from becoming widespread. He advised property owners to ensure tenants do not misuse their premises for gambling activities. – Bernama Prevalent school bullying calls for stricter remedies PETALING JAYA: The rising number of bullying cases in schools calls for immediate action and stricter measures to curb the issue. According to the Sistem Sahsiah Diri Murid statistics under the Education Ministry, bullying cases surged from 3,887 in 2022 to 5,891 in 2023. By October 2024, 5,703 cases were recorded, bringing the total number of students involved in bullying incidents to 11,594. Malaysian Mental Health Association associate counsellor Nurhijjah Mat Zin told theSun male students are more likely to engage in physical bullying, while female students tend to bully through emotional and social means, and the victims are often 13-year-old students. “Bullying takes many forms, both verbal and non-verbal, some of which can have severe or even fatal consequences. The most common types include physical bullying, such as pushing, punching and kicking, as well as coercion to comply with unreasonable demands,” said Nurhijjah. “Verbal bullying involves threats, name-calling, slander and harassment, while social isolation, cyberbullying and body shaming are becoming increasingly common. She warned that one of the biggest oFailure of school to take action should be escalated to Education Ministry as physical, psychological harassment no longer disciplinary issues but criminal acts: Lawyer Ű BY KIRTINEE RAMESH [email protected] misconceptions parents have is believing that bullying is a normal part of growing up. “Some parents assume their children are too resilient to be bullied or believe they would always confide in them if they were harassed. “Others dismiss bullying, advise children to ignore it, or fear legal complications if they report it, ultimately allowing the issue to escalate,” she said, adding that Malaysia has made commendable efforts in addressing bullying, but gaps remain in enforcement. “Some cases are ignored, mishandled or only taken seriously after being widely shared on social media. “There should be strict, standardised procedures that apply to all schools, ensuring swift action against bullies,” said Nurhijjah. She stressed that the consequences of bullying can be devastating, leading to mental health struggles, self-harm and even fatalities. “A fine of just RM100 is not enough to deter perpetrators,” she added. Nurhijjah proposed that every school has at least one trained counsellor rather than relying solely on teacher-counsellors, and implementing a clear, accessible reporting system for students and parents to seek help without fear of repercussions “We should adopt global best practices, such as Finland’s KiVa programme, which encourages students to intervene and stand up against bullying,” she said. In 2017, it was reported that navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain died after being tortured by his peers at a National Defence University hostel, with the Court of Appeal upholding the death sentence on six former students convicted of murdering him. The six will only serve 18 years in prison, after the Federal Court set aside their death sentences recently. Lawyer and Anti-Bullying Act Campaign head Wan Azliana Wan Adnan said bullying must be recognised as a serious crime, warranting strict policies and legal consequences. “Many students remain silent due to threats from bullies, fearing that their reports would not be taken seriously or that they won’t be protected. “To combat this, training teachers and staff in intervention techniques is important. Schools should also monitor high-risk areas such as dormitories, assembly halls and prefect rooms, where bullying is more likely to occur. “If schools or authorities fail to act, victims and parents should escalate the issue through formal complaints to the Education Ministry. Bullying is no longer just a discipline issue. It is a crime,” said Wan Azliana. She also said with the growing use of digital platforms, cyberbullying has become an even greater concern. “Unlike conventional bullying, it allows perpetrators to hide behind fake accounts and operate anonymously, making it more damaging and harder to track. “To counter this, parents must actively monitor the online activities of their children and encourage open communication,” she said. THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 6 KUALA LUMPUR: As a schoolboy, he spent his holidays earning between RM3 and RM5 per hour packing corn cobs, contributing to his family’s income and helping to ease their financial burden. Today, he is a thriving entrepreneur, running ventures in media production, postproduction, film distribution, and food and beverage (F&B). Predeep Singh, 43, who had to drop out of college due to financial constraints, attributes his success to perseverance and a deep commitment to remembering his roots. “Growing up in Segamat (Johor, and later moving to Kuala Lumpur) with my four siblings, I truly understood the meaning of poverty.” He said his father worked as a government driver, while his mother was a housewife who often borrowed eggs and onions from neighbours to prepare meals, adding that taking on small jobs during school holidays taught him the virtues of hard work, patience, and seizing every opportunity. Predeep said after he had completed his SPM examination, his parents borrowed money from loan sharks to pay part of his fees at Kolej Damansara Utama. “I still remember being called out of class by two lecturers and being informed that I couldn’t continue my studies due to unpaid fees. That moment was a harsh reality check as I had to leave in the middle of a class,” he said, adding that it was a pivotal moment in his life. He said the experience was upsetting, but it fueled his determination to focus on earning a living and he took on various part-time jobs, including being a deejay, and worked in several companies. After a while he said he felt his career was stagnating due to his lack of formal qualifications, and that was when he decided take the leap into entrepreneurship. In 2011, he co-founded a small media postproduction company with his brother. The venture, specialising in video editing, audio mixing, subtitling and dubbing, quickly gained success. Expanding their business across countries such as Thailand and Indonesia, they also established collaborations with global platforms such as Netflix and Disney. Predeep said his entrepreneurial spirit drove him into the F&B industry and he launched his first outlet, The First Chapter, in 2021, adding that the following year a second outlet - Benang, The Second Chapter - was opened. Both outlets are located in KL, reported Bernama. He then opened his third outlet – Scubar, The Third Chapter – on Ko Phi Phi island in Thailand. He is now planning to open a fourth outlet. Predeep said success isn’t solely defined by wealth or business growth. “I approach every job with my heart, and no matter where I stand, I never forget the lowest point I came from. Every job, whether in business or community work, deserves full commitment.” His advice to the young, especially those from modest backgrounds, is simple. “Don’t spend too long looking for opportunities. Give everything you do 110% and the opportunities will come. Grab them when they do. “I am thinking of exploring new ventures, possibly expanding into larger F&B outlets and continuing to develop our postproduction business internationally.” /thesundaily FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK / Malaysian Paper From corn cobs to global ventures oInspiring journey of struggles faced by entrepreneur despite initial lack of qualifications, experience Reaping seeds of success from home farming hobby Among the plants Noor Shahiran grows are cherry tomatoes, bird’s eye chillies, eggplants, green chillies and Brazilian spinach. – BERNAMAPIC “To produce the seedlings, I sow the necessary seeds which I source from agricultural stores. Noor Shahiran Yusoff, 33, said she started gardening to fill her time during the movement control order imposed following the Covid-19 pandemic. She said initially, she planted some 30 vegetable seedlings in her yard, such as chilli, ginger, turmeric and coriander leaves for personal use, with only RM50 as investment which covered the cost of fertiliser, soil and gardening tools. “I never imagined the venture would yield positive results as the seeds I planted grew well and multiplied into seedlings. THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 7 No concrete offer to resettle Uyghurs, says Thai minister BANGKOK: Thailand defended its decision last week to deport 48 ethnic Uyghurs detained over the past decade, saying that it acted in accordance to laws and human rights obligations. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Monday that no country made any concrete offer to resettle the 48 Uyghurs. “We waited for more than 10 years, and I have spoken to many major countries, but no one told me for certain,” he said. Phumtham was out of government from 2006 until mid-2023. Sources told Reuters that Canada, the United States and Australia had offered to resettle the Uyghurs but Bangkok took no action for fear of upsetting China. Human rights groups accuse China of widespread abuses of Uyghurs, an ethnic minority numbering about 10 million in its northwestern region of Xinjiang. Beijing denies any abuses. A State Department official said the United States had offered to resettle the 48 Uyghurs. oDeportation lawful, fulfils rights obligations, says govt Putin extols ‘elephant diplomacy’ with Myanmar MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin hailed expanding ties with ally Myanmar at talks with its State Administration Council (SAC) Chairman Min Aung Hlaing on Tuesday and thanked him for gifting Moscow six elephants. Military analysts have dubbed the present, which coincided with Russia’s completing delivery of six fighter jets to Myanmar, as part of “elephant diplomacy”. “This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the declaration on the foundations of friendship between our countries,” Putin told Min Aung Hlaing at a meeting in the Kremlin. The two sides signed an agreement on construction of a small nuclear plant in Myanmar. Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear power corporation, said the plant would have a capacity of 100 megawatts with the possibility of trebling that capacity. Putin also announced that a military unit from Myanmar would take part in the military parade in Moscow on May 9 marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II victory over Nazi Germany. He said Min Aung Hlaing would also attend. Like China, Russia backs Myanmar’s military and is developing cooperation, including between their air forces. “And of course, I cannot but thank you for your very warm gift: you brought us six elephants last year, and they have already been given to the Moscow Zoo,” Putin said. Min Aung Hlaing, 68, who rarely travels abroad, praised the quality of Russian military hardware his nation receives and said he supported Putin in the Ukraine war where he believed Moscow would soon be victorious. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said he saw good prospects for expanding cooperation in areas including agriculture, nuclear energy, transport and infrastructure. “Despite the illegitimate sanctions against Russia and Myanmar, our trade and economic cooperation is developing successfully, and mutual trade is growing,” Mishustin said. Russian companies plan to invest in Myanmar’s special economic zone in Dawei, Mishustin said. The long-delayed Dawei project on the Andaman Sea is intended to be a major hub for industry, technology and transport. The FA-50 fighter jet had gone missing a day earlier while on a mission to provide air support for troops fighting guerillas in northern Mindanao. Lt-Gen Luis Rex Bergante, commander of Eastern Mindanao Command, said the two crewmen had been found inside the wreckage. “The bodies were found inside the aircraft. There was an attempt to eject and open a parachute,” he said. “The aircraft was a total wreck. The jet smashed through trees on the mountain.” Lt-Col Francisco Garello of the 4th Infantry Division told AFP the wreckage of the missing jet was found on Mount Kalatungan. Located in Mindanao’s Bukidnon province, the 2,880m Kalatungan is the fifthtallest mountain in the Philippines. Bergante said bringing the servicemen’s remains down the mountainside was now the top priority. In a statement, the air force said it had temporarily “grounded its FA-50 fleet” and would “ensure a thorough investigation into the accident”, the cause of which remains unknown. – AFP Indonesia seeds clouds to stem rainfall after floods JAKARTA: Authorities here have started to seed clouds to stem heavy rainfall that caused flooding around Jakarta, officials said, after one person died and thousands were displaced. The deluge that began on Monday hit Jakarta, home to around 11 million people, as well as the neighbouring cities of Bogor, Bekasi and Tangerang. At least one person, who local media identified as a three-year-old girl, died after torrential rain made several rivers overflow, pushing waters up 3m and submerging more than 1,000 homes. Authorities estimated the bad weather could last until March 11 so took the preemptive measure of cloud seeding, prompting rain away from flood-hit areas or drawing rain from smaller clouds to prevent heavier rainfall later. “Hopefully, with the weather modification, we can reduce it,” said weather agency head Dwikorita Karnawati. “We can’t prevent the rain ... that’s impossible ... but we can reduce the intensity.” Cloud seeding, the practice of using planes to fire salt or other chemicals into clouds to induce rain, will last until Saturday and focus on mountainous areas in West Java province where heavy rainfall can flow down to nearby cities including Jakarta. Canada also offered asylum, said four sources, including diplomats and people with direct knowledge. Two of these sources said another offer came from Australia. These proposals, which the sources said were not taken forward by Thailand over fears of a fallout with China, have not been previously reported. All the sources declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. Thailand and China’s foreign ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for Canada’s Immigration Ministry said they would not comment on individual cases. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade referred to a statement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who said on Friday the country “strongly disagrees” with Thailand’s decision. China’s embassy in Bangkok said in a statement on Friday that 40 Chinese illegal migrants, who had not committed any serious crimes, had returned home to be reunited with their families after more than 10 years of separation. Besides the 40 Uyghurs deported last week, five are in a Thai prison due to a criminal case, according to local officials. Reuters could not immediately confirm the whereabouts of the other three people. Pisan Manawapat, a Thai ambassador to Canada and the US between 2013 and 2017 and a senator before he retired in 2024, said that at least three countries had approached Thailand with proposals to resettle the Uyghurs, but declined to name them. “We didn’t want to upset China. So we did not make the decision at the political level to go through with this,” Pisan said. Phumtham said Thailand made the decision to deport the group to China last week after reassurances from Beijing that Thai officials would be allow to monitor the Uyghurs’ well-being in the country following their return. The UN’s refugee agency said it was repeatedly denied access to the group by Thai authorities. A source said the agency’s lack of access to the Uyghurs meant they could not be processed as asylum seekers, stalling their potential resettlement and leaving them stuck in detention. – Reuters “We can’t let the clouds get too big, so we will make it come down little by little,” said Dwikorita. Authorities said as of late Tuesday at least 2,200 residents had been displaced by the floods, as locals took to rooftops or used ropes to pull themselves to safety from the high waters. – AFP

Four children were among those killed in Tuesday’s attack, which involved four suicide bombers. The attack took place in Bannu, a district in the turbulent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province close to Afghanistan and next to the formerly self-governed tribal areas, once a hotbed for militancy. “The terrorists entered Bannu Cantt from two different directions and, after an intense operation lasting several hours until this morning, all attackers were eliminated,” Chief Minister Pakhtoon Yar Khan said, adding that four children and three women were killed. Plumes of grey smoke rose into the air after the two explosions, with gunfire heard throughout the night. “In this intense exchange of fire, five brave soldiers, after putting up a heroic resistance, embraced martyrdom in the line of duty,” the military said in a statement yesterday, adding that 13 civilians were also killed. The statement said 16 “terrorists”, including four suicide bombers, were killed, while a nearby mosque and residential area were severely damaged. Thousands of people, including security officials, attended funerals for 12 of the civilians held at a sports complex in Bannu yesterday afternoon. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attackers as “cowardly terrorists who deserve no mercy”. Flooding rains, destructive winds and violent waves were expected to batter a densely populated 300km stretch of coastline straddling the border of Queensland state and New South Wales. Almost 20,000 homes in Brisbane city alone are at risk of being inundated, according to city council modelling. – AFP RAIN OFFERS HOPE FOR WILDFIRE RELIEF IN JAPAN OFUNATO: As Japan battled its worst wildfire in half a century yesterday in a region hit by record-low rainfall, wet weather has given hope for some relief. Rain and snow were falling yesterday with more wet weather forecast through today. It has engulfed around 2,900ha, making it the largest wildfire since at least 1975, when 2,700ha burned on Hokkaido island. At least 84 buildings are believed to have been damaged, although details are still being assessed, according to the fire agency. – AFP US will get Greenland one way or the other: Trump WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump urged Greenland on Tuesday to choose to join the United States but vowed to take the Danishruled island “one way or the other” – whatever the locals decide. In a partisan speech to Congress, Trump offered only passing lines on world affairs, focusing on his domestic goals like rounding up undocumented immigrants and slashing government spending. But he underlined his expansionist vision of the United States, as he repeated his aspirations to take Greenland and claimed an initial victory on retaking control of the Panama Canal. One week before general elections in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark with an independence movement, Trump said he had a message for the “incredible people” of the sparsely populated but mineral-rich and strategically-placed island. o President underlines expansionist vision in speech “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” Trump said. But he made clear he would not give up if persuasion fails, saying: “One way or the other we’re going to get it. “We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.” US threats to take Greenland would once have been unthinkable, with Denmark a treaty ally of the United States under Nato. But Trump has made clear he has little patience for European allies, which he again denounced for not spending more on their militaries, with Trump instead seeing a return to an era of big powers taking what they want. He has similarly vowed to take back the Panama Canal, the crucial link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that the United States handed to Panama at the end of 1999. Trump declared triumph after Hong Kong firm CK Hutchison decided to sell its Panama ports to a US-led consortium. “We didn’t give it to China. Gave it to Panama – and we’re taking it back,” he said. Trump had earlier not ruled out military force to seize either the Panama Canal or Greenland. Trump has paradoxically sought to cast himself as a peacemaker. He has vowed to end the war in Ukraine and has rattled allies by suspending aid to the country, which Russia invaded three years ago. Trump and Vice-President JD Vance berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he visited the White House on Friday, calling him ungrateful. Addressing Congress, Trump read a message from Zelensky in which the Ukrainian leader sought to repair the damage and voiced a willingness to a sign a deal in which the United States would take much of Ukraine’s mineral wealth. “It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” Trump said. The Trump administration has cancelled more than 90% of development assistance, a key source of US non-military influence. Trump has described aid as not in the US interest. – AFP China lawmakers bullish despite ‘turbulent’ world BEIJING: Chinese lawmakers said they were confident in the country’s prospects despite a host of gnarly challenges, after a morning of meticulously choreographed fanfare at an annual political gathering in Beijing. Following the opening session of the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing’s opulent Great Hall of the People, representatives emerged into Tiananmen Square, brightly lit by the mid-morning sun. “The international situation is very turbulent now, especially the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israeli-Palestinian war,” said Liu Hui, an NPC delegate from the central province of Jiangxi, told journalists. “But China is very stable internally, and we also have strong confidence, such as in improving our economy.” Yesterday’s proceedings – part of the country’s biggest annual political gathering known as the “Two Sessions” – saw the government disclose highly anticipated spending plans for the year ahead. An official “work report” presented in a speech to delegates by Premier Li Qiang showed that Beijing is eyeing national growth this year of “around 5%” – the same as 2024. The world’s second-largest economy has charted an uneven course since the pandemic, bogged down by lacklustre domestic consumption and a prolonged debt crisis in the vast property sector. Many economists view the newest goal as ambitious. And just a few weeks in, US President Donald Trump’s second term threatens to significantly exacerbate trade headwinds facing the export powerhouse this year. But Liu said after the session that he “warmly welcomed” Trump’s second term. “No matter who is president (of the United States), as long as they are beneficial to global development and help global stability, unity and economic development, I will welcome them with open arms,” Liu said. Earlier, nearly 3,000 representatives rose to their feet and fervently applauded as President Xi Jinping and other top leaders entered the cavernous auditorium. Attendees then sang along as a military band played China’s national anthem ahead of Li’s speech. Yin Jianmin, an NPC representative from the poor, arid northwestern province of Gansu, told AFP outside the hall that Li’s words showed her that “China is strong and will develop better and better”. “At the same time, the report pointed out a very bright road for our Chinese private entrepreneurs,” she said. THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 9 CAIRO: Arab leaders endorsed on Tuesday a plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip under the future administration of the Palestinian Authority, presenting an alternative to President Donald Trump’s widely condemned proposal to take over the territory and displace its people. The prospect of the Palestinian Authority (PA) governing Gaza remains far from certain, however, with Israel having ruled out any future role for the body, and Trump having closed the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) liaison office in Washington during his first term while stepping up support for Israel. Trump triggered global outrage by suggesting the United States “take over” the Gaza Strip and develop it, while forcing its Palestinian inhabitants to relocate to Egypt or Jordan. Tuesday’s Arab League summit in Cairo offered an alternative with the adoption of a “comprehensive Arab plan”. It announced the establishment of a trust fund to pay for the territory’s reconstruction, A Palestinian family breaking fast in their destroyed house in Beit Lahia on Tuesday. – AFPPIC Swiss prosecutor seeks suspended sentences for Blatter, Platini and urged the international community to back it. “All these efforts are proceeding in parallel with the launch of a political track” towards Palestinian statehood, it added, an ambition that Israeli leaders have opposed. The statement welcomed “the Palestinian decision to form a Gaza administration committee under the umbrella of the Palestinian government”. The summit also called on Palestinian representation to be unified under the PLO, an umbrella group that is the dominant political force within the Palestinian Authority and which excludes Hamas. The PA had previously governed Gaza before losing power there in 2007 to Hamas. Hamas said it welcomed the summit’s plan and the proposed formation of a temporary committee “to oversee relief efforts, reconstruction and governance”. But it was unclear how willing Hamas would be to relinquish control of Gaza. Israel said the Arab leaders’ proposal failed “to address the realities” and criticised its reliance on both the PA and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. “Both have repeatedly demonstrated corruption, support for terrorism, and failure in resolving the issue,” the Israeli foreign ministry said in a statement. Palestinians, Arab states and many European governments have rejected Trump’s proposal for US control of Gaza, opposing any efforts to expel its people. Trump has recently appeared to soften his stance, saying he was “not forcing” the plan, which experts have said could violate international law. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the plan would ensure Palestinians “remain on their land”, but was careful not to criticise Trump. The summit’s final communique warned against “sinful attempts to displace the Palestinian people”, saying they would “usher the region into a new phase of conflicts”. For Palestinians, any forced displacement evokes memories of the “Nakba”, or catastrophe – the mass displacement in the war that led to Israel’s creation in 1948. Sisi said on Tuesday that the new management committee, composed of Palestinian technocrats, was aimed at “paving the way for the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Strip”. Veteran Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, also addressing the summit, said a working committee had been formed to prepare for the PA resuming its role in Gaza. – AFP Arab leaders endorse plan Kyiv readiness to negotiate is positive: Kremlin MOSCOW: Russia welcomes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement that Kyiv is willing to negotiate over the war, but it is not yet clear who it might be negotiating with, the Kremlin said yesterday. Zelensky made the statement in a letter to President Donald Trump, which Trump made public on Tuesday. “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians,” Trump said in an address to Congress while quoting from the letter. Asked how the Kremlin viewed this, spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied: “Positively.” But he added: “The question is who to sit down with. For now, the Ukrainian president is still legally prohibited from negotiating with the Russian side. So, overall, the approach is positive, but the nuances have not changed yet.” Peskov was referring to a Zelensky decree in 2022 that ruled out negotiations with President Vladimir Putin. A draft law removing the UN requirement was presented to a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday after plans to drop it were announced in late 2023. – Reuters MUTTENZ: The Swiss public prosecutor on Tuesday requested suspended sentences of 20 months for both Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini in an appeal against their 2022 acquittal in a corruption case. An Extraordinary Appeal Court sitting in Muttenz near Basel, will hand down its decision on March 25 in a long-running legal saga which shattered the careers of Blatter, the former president of world football’s governing body Fifa, and Platini, ex-head of European body UEFA. Prosecutor Thomas Hildbrand opted not to call for prison sentences for the 88-year-old Swiss and 69-year-old Frenchman. The case began in 2015 when Blatter quit as head of Fifa in a corruption crisis. It stems from a delayed payment of two million Swiss francs (RM9.98 million) Fifa paid Platini in 2011 for consultancy services. The pair were acquitted by the Swiss Federal Court in June 2022 of charges that included “disloyal management”, “breach of trust” and “forgery of securities”. The court concluded that fraud was “not established with a likelihood bordering on certainty”, and therefore applied the general principle of criminal law according to which “the doubt must benefit the accused”. The Swiss Attorney General’s office appealed. In his three-and-a-half-hour argument on Tuesday, Hildbrand set out to dispel the defendants’ assertion that they had an “oral contract” to pay Platini in 2011 for work as a consultant between 1998 and 2002. In 2011, Platini opted not to run against Blatter, who was then reelected as Fifa president. Blatter and Platini had signed a written agreement in August 1999, before the Frenchman became UEFA president, providing for an annual payment by FIFA of 300,000 Swiss francs for consultancy work. At the beginning of 2011, Platini presented an invoice for 2 million Swiss francs. Blatter approved it and presented it to Fifa as a late salary balance. The defendants say they had agreed a yearly sum of one million Swiss francs but that this was too much for Fifa finances at the time. He said the argument was implausible. Even if Fifa had transferred one million Swiss francs to Platini in 1999, it would still have had “more than 21 million francs in cash”, and its reserves had reached 328 million in 2002. To agree such a sum without a written record, without witnesses and without making provision for it in the accounts was, he said, “contrary to commercial practice” as well as to Fifa’s norms. The appeal trial, which began on Monday, is due to continue until today, with closing arguments from the defence. Although Fifa, the civil party, has joined the public prosecutor’s appeal, it is not represented in Muttenz. – AFP

10 THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 reduce some emissions related to commuting, its overall sustainability benefits are less clear when the increased home energy consumption is considered. Re-examining employee perspective While much of the discourse around remote work has focused on its potential benefits, a more balanced view is essential. While employees may benefit from avoiding the stress of daily commutes and having more time with their families, their financial burden may also increase. Utility costs, especially electricity and internet services, have surged for many. A study conducted in Malaysia revealed that the increased use of air conditioning and kitchen appliances during the stay-home period contributed significantly to the rise in electricity consumption. This trend parallels what many Malaysian households are experiencing, highlighting a broader regional issue related to the increased costs of remote work. This rise in expenses directly impacts those working from home, particularly employees in lowerincome brackets, who may find that the increased utility costs will offset any savings on commuting. This shift raises important questions about corporate responsibility. Companies may need to be proactive in subsidising these costs and provide allowances or reimbursements for the additional expenses that remote work entails. Consequently, companies that are enthusiastic about maintaining remote or hybrid models must carefully evaluate how they can support employees in managing these new expenditures. Some companies in other countries have already begun offering stipends or financial support to help cover the increased costs of home-based work. For example, the Netherlands government recognises the additional costs that homeworkers incur compared to working in the office and allows companies to provide a tax-free allowance to employees. It may be worth exploring similar initiatives in Malaysia, ensuring that employees are not unfairly burdened by their new working conditions. As the world adjusts to this new normal, it is crucial to foster a balanced dialogue around remote work. It is not enough to simply celebrate its benefits. Companies must also acknowledge and address the less glamorous aspects of this shift. We must take a comprehensive approach, from ensuring that employees are not overburdened by increased costs to rethinking how energy usage impacts personal and environmental sustainability. A commitment to employee well-being means considering every angle, not just the ones that reduce corporate costs. Malaysian Paper 03-7784 6688 [email protected] Environmental impact of hybrid working REMOTE working has become one of the most significant developments in the modern workplace. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated its adoption, and employees and businesses have been quick to highlight the benefits. Employees cite improved worklife balance, time saved from commuting and the convenience of a home-based workspace. Companies, on the other hand, enjoy reduced overhead costs associated with maintaining physical office spaces. Moreover, the reduced number of employees commuting daily has led to a noticeable decrease in traffic congestion and vehicle emissions, contributing to lower carbon footprints in major cities. This reduction in environmental strain has been celebrated as a significant win for sustainability efforts, further driving the hybrid work movement. A 2022 survey conducted by the Malaysian Employers Federation underscored this shift, revealing that 61.7% of Malaysian companies expressed a desire to continue embracing hybrid work models, whether a mix of virtual and on-site or fully virtual. The government has responded to the shift towards hybrid and remote work by enacting amendments to the Employment Act 1995, which officially recognises flexible work arrangements as a legal form of incentive. This legislative step, effective from Jan 1, 2023, reflects the growing acceptance of remote work as a long-term employment model. However, while these perks have driven widespread enthusiasm for hybrid work, the bigger picture is more complex, especially when considering its financial and environmental impacts. Contextual challenges For a country like Malaysia, the widespread shift to remote work carries unforeseen consequences. Malaysia’s hot and humid climate necessitates frequent air conditioning use, especially for those working from home in urban areas. Studies have shown that buildings in Malaysia contribute significantly to energy consumption, with cooling accounting for a large proportion of electricity usage. This means that employees working from home now face the challenge of increased energy consumption to maintain a comfortable working environment. What was once the office’s responsibility – managing climate control for large numbers of employees – has now become a household burden. As more Malaysians work from home, their reliance on cooling appliances increases, pushing energy consumption upwards, especially in densely populated urban centres. This dynamic has contributed to a marked rise in energy demand and usage and increased utility bills. Additionally, it has also complicated the environmental narrative around hybrid working by creating a larger ecological footprint. A simulation in Penang revealed that cooling energy alone accounted for 36% of the total electricity consumption in residential areas. Experts argue that the collective energy footprint of thousands of individual home offices may surpass that of a centralised corporate workspace, especially when factoring in air conditioning, lighting and other appliances running during work hours. Thus, while hybrid work may “Companies that are enthusiastic about maintaining remote or hybrid models must carefully evaluate how they can support employees in managing these new expenditures. 11 THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 Lessons from US-Ukraine showdown THE lessons to be learnt from Ukraine and the endgame unfolding in Europe will not be lost to countries in the Asia Pacific region. Hollywood could not have scripted and produced a more unlikely and dramatic movie than the one now appearing on handphones and computer screens all over the world. Featuring US President Donald Trump, US Vice President JD Vance and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, the live meeting before a disbelieving and shellshocked audience has produced a torrent of commentary and analysis unlike any similar event relating to American foreign policy over the past three decades. The extraordinary public confrontation took place over what had been touted as a public relations event during which Zelensky would sign a mineral agreement with the US as a prelude to the US-brokered peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Instead, this much anticipated American foreign policy triumph ended in a shouting match, leaving both presidents with eggs on their faces. It also shattered hopes of a quick end to the war promised by Trump during his presidential campaign. Americans take on the clash The Oval Office clash in the US has deepened the already existing divide between Democratic and Republican leaders and their supporters, with the former upbraiding Trump and his “bully tactics” against what they see as a heroic leader standing firm in his country’s freedom fight against Russia. Meanwhile, Republicans are defending Trump and agreeing that Zelensky had overplayed his card and disrespected the US and American contribution to Ukraine’s survival. The public confrontation has unnerved American pro-Ukraine and antiTrump media so much that its columnists have devoted entire columns excoriating Trump whilst its readers are calling for his impeachment and removal from office. It is also providing the Democratic Party with ammunition for a new campaign to demonise and pull him and his ruling Republican party further down. Away from the American response influenced by its domestic politics, policymakers in other parts of the world are drawing their own conclusions, especially in relation to the following concerns: 0 Impact and repercussions 0 Winners and losers 0 Scenarios for Ukraine, Russia, the EU and Nato going forward Immediate and longer-term impact There is little disagreement about its immediate impact as Zelensky was ordered out of the White House and with the remaining events of his programme cancelled. The diplomatic humiliation of Zelensky is unprecedented and has adverse repercussions on the standing of the US in the eyes of political leaders and the public in Western Europe, and what the West regards as the “free world”. Other apparent outcomes: 0 Zelensky has made an enemy in Trump, Vance and Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, who has provided an articulate defence of Trump and Vance, and critique of Zelensky in the Oval Office showdown. The Ukrainian concern now is that their president is perceived by the three leaders as not only disrespectful of the US but also of them personally. The trio are the most important figures in US diplomacy and foreign policy-making for at least the next four years and possibly more. Any negotiations by Zelensky and/or replacement Ukrainian leaders on the war and its aftermath will have to live with this cloud of personal animosity that could well influence some of the outcome. 0 Trump and company will not attempt to broker a ceasefire or peace agreement until Zelensky eats humble pie, apologises and returns to the negotiation table set up and dominated by the US and Russia. Winners, losers and future scenarios 0 The undoubted winner from the meeting debacle is Russia and President Vladimir Putin. He can now be sure that not only is Ukraine unlikely to win the war, but also that if the US stops its military and financial support, Ukraine cannot continue the war. The Russian president will go into any peace negotiations with a much stronger hand, with the prospect of the Crimean part of Ukraine, now occupied by Russian forces, likely to remain in Russian control as part of the settlement. He will also have won a significant victory by stopping Ukraine from becoming a member of Nato. This has been a consistent and non-negotiable Russian precondition for any peace talk and settlement. If successful, this outcome will have political and strategic implications by forestalling Nato expansion into the eastern flank of Europe, with its traditionally proRussian countries and governments. It needs to be emphasised that most neutral observers maintain that the catalyst for Putin’s military action in Ukraine stems from Nato’s duplicitous membership and military expansion drive along the Russian border. If brought to the negotiation table, Putin’s victory paradoxically could provide the basis for a more durable and sustainable peace between Russia and Western European countries propagandised into the belief of the impending military expansion of a new Soviet Union. 0 The biggest loser is Ukraine. Without a truce and peace agreement in sight, it will see its civilian and military casualties mount. Although Russia is also suffering from the war, its threshold for pain – with or without Putin – is much higher. Ukrainians who have fled the war and sought refuge in other countries – an estimated seven million or one-sixth of the pre-war population – are unlikely to return if there is no peace. In rejecting Trump’s peace role, Ukraine is, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban observed after the disastrous meeting, “essentially now on a ventilator”. 0 The other key player in the war – European Union (EU) countries – will see an attempt by their leaders to cut their losses, although there is, for now, brave talk from Britain about wresting control over the war negotiations away from Trump and the US. Without the support and active participation of the US as the war’s main sponsor, facing increased pressure to significantly ramp up their domestic defence budgets and confronting the loss of public support for the continuation of what many Europeans (perhaps the majority) and the rest of the world recognise as an unwinnable war, the EU and Britain will have to defer to the US and Russia shaping and having the final say on whatever peace settlement is reached. 0 Another big loser is Nato. As the most enthusiastic advocate of the war and provider of an unprecedented level of military support that has prolonged it, Nato is now seen by many observers as an irrelevant and discredited military alliance remnant from the Cold War that is now in deep crisis following the Trump-Zelensky clash. Fixated on providing a military counterpoint against Russia and other “free world enemies”, critics of Nato have pointed to its support role in wars waged by the US and argue that the organisation is an obstacle rather than a force for peace. Once a peace settlement is reached in Ukraine without Nato’s involvement, Trump, with his direct transactional approach to foreign policy and his Maga (Make America Great Again) mission, will see Nato decline further as an influential force in world politics. Asia Pacific region served notice The lessons to be learnt from Ukraine will not be lost to countries in the Asia Pacific region. Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and other treaty and non-treaty allies of the US have entered into a new era of global politics and economics in which their national interests will count for nothing or little in Trump’s Maga foreign and domestic policy and actions. During this challenging time, it is essential to remain vigilant and prioritise electrical and gas safety as floods bring various risks resulting from fallen electrical poles, damaged power lines and compromised electrical and gas systems. To prevent fires, explosions or electrocution, here are key safety guidelines once floodwaters recede: 1. Inspect for damage: 0 Documents: Take photos or videos of any damage for insurance purposes. 0 Stay informed: Follow local utility and emergency service updates for guidance. 0 Generator safety: If using a generator, ensure it is operated outdoors in a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. 2. Turn off power: 0Do not move fallen wires: Avoid touching fallen electrical poles or wires. Instead, immediately switch off the electrical distribution board. 0Flooded outlets/appliances: If floodwaters have reached electrical outlets or appliances, turn off the power at the main breaker only if it is safe to do so. Ensure you are standing on a dry, insulated surface. 3. Inspect electrical system: 0 Hire a professional: Have an electrician check your home’s electrical system, including outlets, wiring and circuit breakers, before using them. 4. Avoid waterlogged equipment: 0 Do not use submerged appliances: Do not operate any appliances, outlets or switches that have been submerged until they have been properly inspected and deemed safe. 5. Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCI): 0 Reduce risk of electric shock: When reconnecting appliances post-flood, use GFCI outlets to minimise the risk of electric shock. 6. Report utility hazards: 0 Stay away from downed power lines: If you encounter fallen power lines or utility poles, stay clear and report them to the relevant authorities immediately. 7. Do not use gas appliances: 0 Avoid turning on gas appliances: Do not use gas appliances until they have been inspected by a qualified technician. 8. Shut off gas supply: 0 Suspected leak: If you suspect a gas leak or if gas appliances were submerged, turn off the main gas valve and leave it off until it has been inspected. 9. Ventilate area: 0 Smell of gas: If you smell gas, open windows and doors to ventilate the area. 10. Call for professional help: 0 Contact a technician: Reach out to your gas vendor or a licensed technician for inspection and service. Do not attempt repairs yourself. 0 Check for gas odours: Be aware of the smell of gas (a rotten egg odour) and look for visible damage to gas lines, appliances or connections. Malaysia an Asean leader in affordable housing: IQI KUALA LUMPUR: New data from IQI reveals that Malaysia is an Asean leader in successfully expanding access to affordable housing, according to data compiled for the first time by IQI and released by the company’s co-founder and group CEO Kashif Ansari. “This is the first time the affordable housing budgets and per capita spending across Asean have been compared in this way. It took us a great deal of effort, and behind this simple table are several more spreadsheets and reams of source material. Here, we are going to examine what it means to be affordable, how much governments spend on affordable housing, and the benefits of relying on the private sector to construct homes. In the process, we will see how Malaysia outperforms many Asean peers,” he said. With its population of 34 million and per capita GDP of RM51,001, he remarked Malaysia has limited resources to dedicate to affordable housing, yet it spends a significant amount. The 2024 budget alone dedicated RM2.85 billion to the issue. Only three other Asean nations spent more. (see graph). “All this spending is having an impact, with Malaysia very likely to achieve its 12th Malaysia Plan target of building 500,000 affordable homes by 2026. That number seemed too ambitious when it was announced, but 443,259 units were completed by last September, meaning fewer than 60,000 must be built in 2025 and 2026,” said Ansari. He added those 500,000 units are equal to 50% of the country’s affordable housing backlog of about 1 million units. Malaysia’s progress in affordable housing is particularly remarkable when considering the situation in other Asean countries. Three countries in the region – Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar – have essentially no governmentbacked affordable housing construction initiatives in place. This makes Malaysia’s achievements stand out even more. Malaysian homes more affordable than Asean neighbours’ Malaysia’s investment is helping keep home prices down, according to a recent report by the Urban Land Institute. Kuala Lumpur apartments are less expensive relative to annual income than private homes in Jakarta, Hanoi, Bangkok, Manila, or Singapore. Houses in Kuala Lumpur are also relatively affordable compared to regional neighbours, outperforming homes in Hanoi, Bangkok, and Manila. Among the important developments this year is that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is serving as Asean chairman. His theme is “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” Affordable housing clearly fits within that slogan. Given Malaysia’s strong performance, it could be an issue on which Malaysia leads oFirst-of-its-kind data shows country making remarkable progress, outperforming regional peers the rest of its Asean peers in 2025. Data reveals Malaysia’s strong performance When you compare the Malaysia data to other Asean nations, you find that the Malaysian government is very committed to housing accessibility. That is important, given the forecast that 1.4 million people will move to the country’s cities by 2030. Malaysia allocated about RM2.85 billion for affordable housing in 2024. Six other Asean countries allocated less, and three spent essentially nothing. That comparison reveals affordable housing is a critical national priority in Malaysia, but not everywhere in Asean. Malaysia’s affordable housing efforts are competitive in other ways, too. On a per capita spending basis, Malaysia outspends five Asean peers and ranks in the top five performers. “Singapore does spend substantially more than Malaysia. However, in that citystate, most of the public housing actually serves middle-income rather than more needy families. More than 80% of Singapore residents live in public housing, and only about 5% of Singapore’s land is available for private housing,” said Ansari. He added Malaysia’s per capita affordable housing investment of about RM85 per person is higher than in several Asean nations. Malaysia spends about 550% more per capita on affordable housing than Indonesia and 840% more than the Philippines. “What conclusion do I draw? I believe that Malaysia is making better progress on housing affordability than several of its peers, despite strict budgetary realities,” said Ansari. Malaysia uses private sector to increase impact As a populous and geographically diverse country with a federal constitution, Malaysia has adopted a diverse housing strategy that adapts itself to the needs of different groups of residents. The government leverages each ringgit it invests in housing by incentivising private development. Instead of the government fully funding the construction of every new unit, private developers invest their own capital to build homes. The incentives these developers obtain from the government enable them to do so without losing money. This minimises financial pressure on government spending. It will take years to solve the problem of providing affordable housing to everyone who needs it, so the system needs to be sustainable over the long term. Malaysia’s system successfully avoids the risk of financial imbalances while maintaining a steady pipeline of new housing. Summary of Malaysia’s affordable housing programmes Malaysia has at least seven distinct programmes to provide affordable housing to its citizens. Some focus on renters and others on buyers. There are programmes for lower- and middle-income earners. And there are programmes that target specific demographics like civil servants or younger Malaysians. Even gig workers and the self-employed have options. The Malaysia’s Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme had a RM10 billion allocation to help these individuals secure home loans in 2024. Malaysia’s steady progress stands out In contrast to Malaysia, some Asean nations have struggled to make progress on affordable housing. The Philippines has targeted the construction of 1 million homes per year. Yet, their programme has struggled due to insufficient funding. The Philippine government has had to slash the target by two million homes. In Cambodia, the government has admirable goals for affordable housing. High land and construction costs in that country have made it difficult to encourage private-sector investment, however. “I can’t help concluding that Malaysia’s scalable and sustainable approach ensures it can make steady progress on housing without exhausting government finances. We believe that, compared to its Asean peers, Malaysia’s performance is impressive. Some spend more, but few countries of the same size have sustained their efforts year after year, like Malaysia has. “Looking ahead, I believe Malaysia is in an excellent position to significantly expand its efforts by leveraging economic growth, innovative strategies, and smart urban planning. These factors can play a crucial role in further enhancing the supply of affordable housing and meeting the growing demand across the nation,” said Ansari.

THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 Editorial T: 03-7784 6688 F: 03-7785 2625 E: [email protected] Advertising T: 03-7784 8888 E: [email protected] SCAN ME Govt to award Arm CSS tokens to eligible companies at KL20 Summit KUALA LUMPUR: The government will award Arm Compute Subsystem (CSS) tokens – access to Arm Holdings’ high-end chip design framework – to Malaysian semiconductor companies that meet selection criteria at the next KL20 Summit in the coming months, said Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. He said that through the ecosystem partnership with Arm Holdings, Malaysia would work to develop complex design companies with Arm’s intellectural property expertise and to design based on Arm’s “crown jewel” offering – the CSS. “For each of the CSS, we are looking to build a complete supply chain in advanced industries such as AI data servers, autonomous vehicles, IoT, robotics and others. An ecosystem perspective also means that we will prioritise local players as the first resort for every part of the supply chain,” he said in his speech at the launch of Silicon Vision 2025 with Arm Limited yesterday. Rafizi said it has put in place a collaboration structure with advanced foreign firms, proposed technology transfer and localisation requirements, so that it could uplift local players in a realistic and holistic way. “In the next few months, we will show progress on this Arm collaboration: By launching the 10-year vision blueprint, announcing the recipients of the CSS tokens, highlighting the collaboration with local players, and showcasing these technology prototypes at the next KL20 Summit,” he shared. Rafizi said Malaysia’s semiconductor industry must move from OSAT (backend) that captures 5-10% of the value, to integragted circuit design that captures over 60% of the supply chain value. “Our economic strategy requires Malaysia to build local, indigenous technology for higher margin exports and supply chain resilience. We need to venture into new technology areas like AI, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and IoT,” he added. According to media reports, Rafizi told reporters on Monday that Malaysia will pay Arm Holdings US$250 million (RM1.1 billion) over 10 years to acquire the firm’s chip design plans. Malaysia aims to produce its own graphics processing unit chips within the next five to 10 years to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence and data centres. The agreement includes access to seven of Arm’s high-end chip design blueprints and a commitment to train 10,000 engineers in Malaysia. The government hopes this deal will help local semiconductor companies scale up, with a target of creating 10 firms generating annual revenues of US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion each. There are nine taxes introduced this year. We have enough taxes already. The government needs to find a better way for revenue generation. “And the government must also find ways to stop the leakages,” FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai told reporters when presenting the FMM Business Conditions Survey for the Second Half of 2024 yesterday. Soh pointed out that the private sector contributed RM94.4 billion in corporate tax and RM30.8 billion in income tax to the government. A further RM51.24 billion came from private sector indirect tax. “And if you add in sales and service tax, which mostly involved industries, it is about RM44.7 billion. All in all, the private sector had contributed RM221 billion in tax out of our total government revenue of RM322 billion. “So it means the private sector had contributed 68.6% of government tax revenue. We are the taxpayers. We hope the government understands us. We are the ones who pay the most tax. “If the government keeps on adding more tax, the domestic manufacturing sector will face tremendous pressure. How to generate better revenue and better profits?” he said. Soh also noted that the government is working to expand tax base. “We fully understand that. However, our industry is already the largest tax contributor,” he said. Soh said Malaysia has about 1.3 million business entities, of which 98.5% are micro, small, and medium enterprises. Only 1.5% consist of midtier, large and multinational companies. Within the 1.5%, mid-tier companies make up around 1%, or about 8,000 to 10,000 businesses, while large companies account for just 0.5%. Despite being a small segment, these mid-tier and large companies contribute the most in taxes. The FMM president said the government claims that 85% of businesses are unaffected by new tax measures and that only the remaining 15% will be taxed. “However, if we break down the numbers, the 15% includes the 1.5% of mid-tier and large companies – meaning the remaining 13.5% consists of SMEs. These SMEs, which are being taxed, are not wealthy conglomerates. They are hardworking businesses that significantly contribute to the country’s tax revenue. “Moreover, SMEs are the backbone of the Malaysian economy. They account for over 38% of GDP (gross domestic product) and employ nearly 7.8 million people. Mid-tier companies also play a crucial role within this segment. “The impact of taxation on these businesses will directly affect economic stability and employment,” Soh said. The 26th edition of the FMM Business Conditions Survey revealed that Malaysian manufacturing sector in the second half of 2024 demonstrated steady momentum, with business conditions, sales and production strengthening amid high costs. Sustained capital investment and steady employment levels underscore a strategic, long-term confidence as manufacturers navigate an evolving economic landscape with a balanced approach to growth and risk management. Looking ahead to first-half 2025, the FMM survey showed domestic manufacturers are expected to prioritise efficiency over aggressive growth, focusing on stability amid global economic uncertainties. While employment remains stable and investment sentiment is steady, rising costs and external risks may temper business expansion. The sector is moving towards gradual recovery, but caution remains a defining factor in strategic planning. The survey also showed manufacturers’ expectations for higher production volume fell from 32% previously to 30%. Meanwhile, stable production expectations grew to 48% (favourable responses), reflecting greater predictability. Manufacturers also anticipate rising production costs, with 72% expecting higher costs in the first half of 2025, up from 66% previously. Further, domestic manufacturers remain cautiously optimistic about revenue prospects in 2025, with 56% expecting growth, 24% anticipating stability, and almost 19% foreseeing declines. Most respondents predict moderate revenue increases (1%-10%), while only 8% expect strong growth (>25%), reflecting measured confidence rather than aggressive expansion. A majority of respondents (91%) expect the increase in minimum wage and mandatory Employee Provident Fund contribution to impact their operational expenses, while 9% believe there will be no significant effect. Among those anticipating higher costs, 48% expect a moderate increase (5% to 10%), while 26% foresee a smaller rise (less than 5%), and another 26% anticipate a more substantial cost surge (more than 10%). In 2025, manufacturers are bracing intensified cost pressures and slightly heightened competition, with 55% citing rising input costs (up from 49% in 2024) and 48% noting increased competition versus 47% previously. Additionally, 2025 introduces new issues such as regulatory burdens, labour shortages and sustainability compliance, suggesting that although some traditional challenges have moderated, the overall operating environment remains complex and demands a strategic focus on cost efficiency and market differentiation. oFederation urges govt to find better way to generate revenue and to plug leakages Ű BY JOHN GILBERT [email protected] Soh speaking at a press conference in conjunction with the release of the FMM Business Conditions Survey for the second half of 2024.

Group managing director Lim Soon Huat expressed confidence in the company’s ability to navigate the complexities of the sector despite anticipated challenges and uncertainties in the global grain market. These challenges are primarily driven by potential adverse weather conditions in key grain-producing regions, evolving government policies, and shifts in trade dynamics, he said. “To stay ahead in the market, our key priorities include adopting competitive pricing strategies to retain customers and expand our market share, and remain committed to delivering highquality products to our customers. “We are also driving operational efficiency through plant modernisation and automation which will optimise costs while enhancing product quality and consistencies,“ he said during a media briefing on the group’s financial performance for 2024 and outlook for 2025 yesterday. For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, PPB recorded a lower net profit of RM1.22 billion compared to RM1.39 billion in the preceding year, while revenue declined to RM5.39 billion from RM5.72 billion, mainly due to the absence of contributions from its divested Indonesian flour operations in 2023. Meanwhile, Lim shared that PPB’s film and exhibition segment is showing promising signs of sustained growth in 2025. – Bernama BIG innovation drive in govt-linked companies PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Finance (MoF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Mosti) and Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, yesterday launched the Bengkel Inovasi GLC (BIG), a transformative programme aimed at driving innovation across all government-linked companies. With a RM15 million allocation under Budget 2025, this initiative represents a strategic step in advancing Malaysia’s economic reform agenda to “Raise the Ceiling” under the GEAR-uP initiative, in alignment with the Madani Economy framework. GEAR-uP is a national initiative that unites government-linked entities to drive growth in key economic sectors, supporting Malaysia’s structural reforms under the Madani Economy. In its first phase, six leading GLICs pledged RM120 billion in domestic direct investments over five years, focusing on high-growth, highvalue industries such as energy transition, advanced manufacturing and technology ventures. These investments aim to build new economic ecosystems, enhance nationbuilding, and uplift both Malaysia’s economic stature and the rakyat’s quality of life. BIG is designed to empower GLCs by fostering collaboration with startups, accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, and strengthening Malaysia’s economic competitiveness. By bridging the gap between corporate players and the startup ecosystem, the programme supports the nation’s aspiration to become one of the top 20 global startup ecosystems by 2030 while generating high-value jobs and sustainable growth. Minister of Finance II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said that BIG is aimed at cultivating an ecosystem where innovation fuels economic transformation. “This is another strategic growth lever that complements ongoing initiatives to catalyse domestic market growth and raise the ceiling under the Madani Economy framework. As part of its strategic expansion, the company is investing in a new facility, advanced automation technologies, and an expanded service portfolio to meet increasing industry demands. “A key component of this initiative is the construction of an additional operating facility dedicated to anodising and metal plating services (RM7.8 million). This facility, spanning at least 100,000 sq ft on a newly acquired 3-acre industrial land, will feature four fully automated anodising lines and four semiautomated metal plating lines. “The expansion will help Chemlite increase production, work more efficiently, and serve current and new customers better. “The acquisition of the land, valued at approximately RM9.75 million, is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2025, with facility construction slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026,” Chemlite said in its prospectus filed in Bursa Malaysia yesterday. To further broaden its service offerings, the company is introducing cleanroom-based cleaning and packaging services (RM7 million). These controlled environments will minimise contamination in treated metal products, reducing defects and improving product longevity. This new service is set to launch in the third quarter of 2025, attracting new customers while adding value to existing ones. Additionally, Chemlite is investing in advanced automation technologies including masking and dispensing robotic arms, to streamline its preproduction processes (RM1 million). These innovations will enhance precision, increase throughput, and reduce cycle times, further optimising the company’s operations. Chemlite is seeking to raise RM30 million from its initial public offering (IPO) listing on the Ace Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd. The IPO exercise will comprise a public issue of 120 million new shares and an offer for sale of 60 million existing shares. “A total of 30 million shares will be made available for application by the Malaysian public and 21 million shares will be reserved for application by eligible directors and employees, as well as persons who have contributed to its success. “Additionally, 15 million issue shares and 60 million offer shares will be made available by private placement to bumiputra investors approved by Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry,” it said. Chemlite added that the IPO proceeds will enable the company to enhance and expand its facilities, invest in automation and drive R&D initiatives. “We have allocated RM16.3 million (54.34%) of the total proceeds to be utilised for the group’s business expansion, RM5.5 million (18.33%) for repayment of bank borrowings, RM4.2 million (14%) for working capital and the remaining RM4 million for listing expenses,” Chemlite said. Upon listing on the ACE Market on March 26, Chemlite will have a market capitalisation of RM150 million. BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 16 Uptick in commercial real estate transactions Knight Frank Malaysia group managing director Keith Ooi remarked: “Malaysia’s commercial real estate market continues to evolve, with investors showing strong interest in prime office and logistics assets. “As economic conditions stabilise and financing costs ease, we expect a wave of strategic acquisitions, particularly in key urban centers such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru. “Investors are increasingly seeking long-term value, and the resurgence of private capital plays a crucial role in this recovery.” Knight Frank property hub international projects executive director Adrian Yeoh said: “The rebound in global commercial real estate investment has had a direct impact on Malaysia, where we are seeing increased activity from HNWIs and institutional players. “With interest rates expected to ease, we anticipate stronger demand for prime assets, particularly in Kuala Lumpur’s office and logistics sectors.” The number of HNWIs worldwide grew by 4.4% in 2024, reaching 2,341,378 individuals. North America led this expansion with a 5.2% increase, followed by Asia at 5%, Africa at 4.7%, and Australasia at 3.9%. The Middle East (2.7%), Latin America (1.5%), and Europe (1.4%) also saw gains. Malaysia has been a key beneficiary of this wealth growth, with an increasing number of ultra-wealthy individuals diversifying their portfolios into real estate. The country remains an attractive destination for high-value property investments, particularly in the luxury residential and prime commercial segments. Knight Frank property hub international residential associate director Dominic Heaton-Watson commented: “The growing population of high-net-worth individuals in Malaysia is reshaping the local real estate market. “We are witnessing strong demand for luxury residences, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, as well as a heightened interest in commercial properties that offer stable yields. “With global investors also returning to real estate, Malaysia stands to benefit from increased capital inflows in the coming years.” In Malaysia, international investor interest remains strong, particularly in Kuala Lumpur’s prime office and hospitality sectors. With a significant pool of capital ready for deployment, 2025 is poised to be a turning point for the country’s real estate market. With Malaysia positioned as a key player in Southeast Asia’s investment landscape, both domestic and international investors are expected to leverage emerging opportunities, further solidifying the country’s real estate market as a destination of choice. Heaton-Watson and Yeoh. oRecovery driven by HNWIs and institutional investors: Knight Frank Malaysians embrace GenAI rapidly, but women underrepresented KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is witnessing a rapid surge in GenAI adoption, yet women remain significantly underrepresented in this evolving field, according Coursera, an online learning platform which released its Closing the Gender Gap in GenAI Skills playbook, a new resource aimed at addressing the gender gap in Generative AI skills. The playbook explores actionable strategies to empower more women to harness GenAI, highlighting the critical need for continued efforts to build a more inclusive and equitable AI landscape. Coursera data shows that while women constitute 46% of all learners in Malaysia, they make up just 33% share of GenAI enrollments, which closely aligns with the global trend where women represent 32% of total GenAI enrollments. Malaysia currently ranks 31st globally in GenAI enrollments among women learners, emphasising the need for more targeted interventions to ensure equitable access to GenAI opportunities and enable more women to lead in the AI-driven era. Despite this disparity, Coursera said there is a growing interest among Malaysian women to upskill themselves in GenAI. Last year, women enrollments in GenAI surged by 459%, outpacing the 287% growth rate among men. Coursera’s playbook highlights key barriers limiting women’s participation in GenAI, along with strategies to bridge the gap, including women often hesitate to engage in Generative AI courses due to self-doubt, even when they have the skills. On Coursera, women are six times more likely to enroll in beginner-level courses than intermediate ones, favouring structured and accessible entry-points. This trend is mirrored in Malaysia, where the most popular Generative AI courses among women are introductory. Many women cite “lack of time” as their top reason for discontinuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses, reflecting the reality of balancing caregiving and work responsibilities. A BCG report states that only 43% Malaysian women are exposed to technology before university and 53% women employed in the tech workforce are keen to shift to non-technical roles. “While Malaysia has demonstrated an exceptional appetite to understand and harness Generative AI technology, it is crucial for the country’s workforce development and international competitiveness that this appetite is shared equally,” said Coursera global head of enterprise Karine Allouche. Funding Societies Malaysia country head Chai Kien Poon remarked that this partnership with Boss Boleh is another step forward in supporting young entrepreneurs, particularly those with limited financial history, by providing them with tailored financing solutions. With the advent of e-invoicing across all business segments, he said they are also keen to explore the potential benefits of e-invoicing data in enhancing their capabilities in ensuring that underserved businesses can access the funding they need to grow. Boss Boleh co-founder and CEO Angie Ng said: “Cash is king, and managing cash flow remains the top challenge for business owners, particularly for startups, where many fail due to cash flow issues. “Through our partnership with Funding Societies and their innovative digital term and invoice financing solutions, we’re addressing this critical pain point. “This collaboration is especially vital for new businesses, which often struggle to secure bank loans due to a lack of trade history.” At Boss Boleh, she said they provide the support to business owners to simplify the process of preparing the relevant documents and resolutions to apply for a loan facility. “Together, we’re empowering entrepreneurs by providing fast, reliable access to funding to help them thrive,” said Ng. KUALA LUMPUR: According to The Wealth Report, Knight Frank’s flagship publication, global commercial real estate (CRE) investment rebounded strongly in 2024, rising to US$806 billion (RM3.6 trillion), marking an 8% year-on-year increase. This follows the sharp 43% contraction recorded in 2023, signaling renewed investor confidence. Cross-border capital flows also gained momentum, increasing by 12% to US$171 billion, underscoring a global appetite for real estate investments. Malaysia mirrored this global trend, experiencing an uptick in commercial real estate transactions, driven by high net worth individuals (HNWIs) and institutional investors seeking long term value. This recovery aligns with the rise in Malaysia’s HNWI population, reflecting growing wealth accumulation and investment interest. Knight Frank UK commercial research head Will Matthews said that despite global economic uncertainties, they are witnessing a resurgence in investor confidence, with private capital leading the charge. “The continued decline in swap rates and anticipated interest rate cuts are expected to create a more favourable investment climate, unlocking greater transaction volumes in 2025,” he added. Private capital remained the dominant force in the CRE market in 2024, with institutional investors deploying US$268 billion – accounting for 33% of total investments. Public market investors also saw the highest year-on-year increase, posting a 22% rise in investment volumes. In Malaysia, private investors have been particularly active in the office and industrial sectors, capitalising on strong demand for high-quality assets. The industrial sector led global investment, securing US$216 billion, while the living sector followed closely at US$205 billion. Office investment reached US$173 billion, signaling a recovery in confidence in workplace assets. Chai and Ng.

BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 17 BEIJING: China yesterday set an annual growth target of around 5%, vowing to make domestic demand its main economic driver as an escalating trade war with the United States hit Beijing’s exports. Beijing also announced a rare hike in fiscal funding, allowing its budget deficit to reach 4% this year as it battles stuttering employment for young people, stubbornly low consumer demand and a persistent property sector debt crisis. The headline growth figure announced by Premier Li Qiang at an annual Communist Party conclave was broadly in line with an AFP survey of analysts, though experts say it is ambitious considering the scale of the country’s economic challenges. Under the plans, some 12 million new jobs will be created in Chinese cities as Beijing pushes for two percent inflation this year. A government work report vowed to make domestic demand the “main engine and anchor” of growth, adding that Beijing should “move faster to address inadequate domestic demand, particularly insufficient consumption”. And in a rare move, Li said China would hike its fiscal deficit by one percentage point, something that analysts have said will give Beijing more latitude to tackle its economic slowdown. Dylan Loh, an assistant professor at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, said Beijing’s growth target would be “tough but possible”. He said low consumption was a “confidence issue”, adding that “if people are, in their own calculations, worried about spending – especially on big-ticket items – it is far harder to address”. Major Asian markets traded up yesterday, reversing their losses a day after US President Donald Trump went ahead with imposing more blanket tariffs on Chinese imports following a similar move last month. US tariffs are expected to hit hundreds of billions of dollars in total trade between the world’s two largest economies. “Internationally, changes unseen in a century are unfolding across the world at a faster pace,” the government work report said. “Unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise,” it warned. “Domestically, the foundation for China’s sustained economic recovery and growth is not strong enough,” added the report. Chinese exports reached record levels last year. But as thousands of delegates congregated in Beijing’s opulent Great Hall of the People for the opening session of the National People’s Congress, the second of China’s “Two Sessions” political meetings this week, sentiments were clouded by a broadening trade war under Trump. Beijing on Tuesday announced its own measures in retaliation for Washington’s latest tariff hike – and vowed it would fight a trade war to the “bitter end”. The moves will see China impose levies of up to 15% on a range of US agricultural products including soybeans, pork and wheat starting from early next week. Beijing’s countermeasures represent a “relatively muted response” in comparison to Trump’s all-encompassing tariffs, wrote Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING. “The retaliation could have been a lot stronger, and with every further escalation the risks are also rising for a stronger response.” Analysts say authorities may announce further plans this week to boost the economy – adding to a string of aggressive support measures announced late last year. – AFP Robust demand propels India’s services sector in February BENGALURU: Growth in India’s services sector accelerated in February, supported by robust demand and a firm business outlook that led to a substantial increase in hiring, a survey showed. Asia’s third-largest economy expanded 6.2% year-over-year last quarter, lifted by government and consumer spending. The government expects India to grow 6.5% for the full financial year on expectations urban consumption will improve after weakening due to feeble job and income growth. HSBC’s final India services Purchasing Managers’ Index , compiled by S&P Global, rose to 59.0 in February from January’s 26-month low of 56.5 but was lower than a preliminary estimate of 61.1. It has remained above the 50-mark separating expansion from contraction since mid-2021. “Global demand, which grew at its fastest pace in six months according to the new export business index, played a major role in driving output growth for India’s services sector,” noted Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist at HSBC. Overall demand for services picked up in February, recovering from January’s 14-month low, while growth in foreign orders reached its highest in six months. Services companies remained optimistic about the business outlook for the upcoming 12-months. The future activity sub-index, gauging sentiment, stayed firm despite falling to a six-month low. – Reuters China eyes 5% growth despite trade war oGovt seeks to make domestic demand the main economic driver Bank of Japan vows to keep raising rates TOKYO: The Bank of Japan (BOJ) can raise interest rates at a pace in line with dominant views among financial markets and economists, its Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida said, keeping alive expectations that there is a chance of a near-term increase in borrowing costs. While he declined to say how soon the BOJ could raise rates, Uchida essentially ruled out another hike at the bank’s next meeting on March 18 and 19 by saying it “wasn’t as if we would hike rates at every meeting”. “We can look at how the economy and prices respond (to a rate hike), then decide whether to raise rates again,” Uchida told a news conference yesterday, suggesting his preference to spend time gauging the impact of past policy steps before proceeding with further increases. “The pace of rate hikes will depend on economic and price developments at the time.” The BOJ raised its short-term policy rate to 0.5% from 0.25% in January on the view that Japan was making progress towards durably achieving its 2% inflation target. Uchida warned of the need for vigilance due to strong uncertainty over the global economic outlook due in part to US President Donald Trump’s policies and geo-political tensions. But he was upbeat on Japan’s economy, saying consumption will likely be underpinned by solid pay increases expected in this year’s wage talks between firms and unions. With underlying inflation accelerating gradually and wages rising, raising interest rates “will lead to stability in economic activity and prices in the long run”, he said. “If our economic and price projections outlined in our latest outlook report in January are realised, we will continue to raise the policy rate,” Uchida said in a speech delivered to business leaders in Shizuoka before the news conference. The remarks suggest the BOJ’s rate-hike resolve has been undeterred so far by Trump’s 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, a doubling of duties on Chinese goods to 20%, and threats of levies against other countries that have stoked fears of a global economic slowdown. Markets are roughly pricing in a rate hike to 0.75% around July, followed by another increase to 1% early next year, according to a chart attached to Uchida’s speech text posted on the BOJ’s website. A majority of economists polled by Reuters expect the BOJ to hike rates once more this year, most likely during the third quarter. After its rate review later this month, the board will meet on April 30 and May 1 when it will produce fresh quarterly growth and inflation forecasts. – Reuters Indonesian coal miners seek grace period for pricing rule JAKARTA: The Indonesia Coal Miners Association (APBI) is seeking a six-month grace period to adjust to a new pricing system launched this month and called for the government to re-evaluate the policy. The new system, based on government-set coal prices (HBA), has resulted in rates going above market levels, prompting some international buyers to baulk at the costs. “Our association has requested for a grace period. Convincing the buyers is not a simple matter,” APBI acting executive director, Gita Mahyarani, told Reuters yesterday. Indonesia began using the HBA prices from March 1 to calculate a floor price for transactions as it sought to have more control over the price of its commodities. The HBA is based on recent prices reported by coal miners to the government for their royalty fee filings. For the first half of March, Indonesia set prices between US$34.16 and US$128.24 per metric ton, depending on the calorific grade. Buyers of Indonesian coal typically use weekly prices from the Indonesia Coal Price Index as a benchmark for transactions, and HBA prices were previously used only to calculate royalty fees. A Mining Ministry official said exporters are allowed to honour prices stated in their ongoing long-term contracts with buyers, but the government expects firms to make adjustments should their contracts allow it. – Reuters A group of hostesses walking during the opening session of the National People’s Congress at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. – AFPPIC

BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 18 WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has hailed a deal led by BlackRock to buy most of the US$22.8 billion (RM101 billion) ports business of Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison which includes assets along the Panama Canal. The deal will give the US consortium control of key Panama Canal ports amid White House calls to remove them from what it claims is Chinese ownership. On the first trading day after the deal’s announcement, CK Hutchison stock soared nearly 25%. “My administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal, and we’ve already started doing it,” Trump told the US Congress. “Just today, a large American company announced they are buying both ports around the Trump is applauded by Vice-President JD Vance and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (left) as he arrives to deliver his address to a joint session of Congress in Washington. – AFPPIC ‘Tariffs will bring a little disturbance to US economy’ Panama Canal and lots of other things having to do with the Panama Canal and a couple of other canals.” The deal with the BlackRock-led consortium includes 90% of Panama Ports Company, which has operated the Balboa and Cristobal ports at each end of the canal for over two decades, CK Hutchison said. In total, the consortium, which includes Terminal Investment and Global Infrastructure Partners, will control 43 ports comprising 199 berths in 23 countries, the conglomerate said. The conglomerate’s stock rose as much 24.7% yesterday, outpacing a 1.7% rise in Hong Kong’s broader Hang Seng Index. Its price is now the highest since Aug 1, 2023. The sale involves CK Hutchison’s 80% stake in Hutchison Ports with an equity value of US$14.21 billion. However, the conglomerate will receive more than US$19 billion following repayment of some shareholder loans. The size of the proceeds would be similar to CK Hutchison’s entire Hong Kong market value prior to yesterday’s share rally. The remainder of Hutchison Ports is owned by Singapore’s PSA International. About 12,000 ships used the Panama Canal last year that connects 1,920 ports across 170 countries. Its position is strategic for the US as more than three-quarters of vessels passing through originate in or are bound for the United States. “I would like to stress that the transaction is purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports concerning the Panama Ports,” CK Hutchison co-managing director Frank Sixt in a statement. The conglomerate had been waiting for Panama Supreme Court to make a final ruling about the Trump hails ‘reclaiming’ of Panama Canal YouTube set to dodge Australian social media ban SYDNEY: Australia’s plan to exempt YouTube from a world-leading teen social media ban is “illogical” and a “mockery”, rival tech giants Meta and TikTok said yesterday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last year unveiled landmark laws that will ban under-16s from social media by the end of 2025. While popular platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram face heavy fines for flouting the laws, Australia has proposed an exemption so children can use YouTube for school. TikTok’s Australian policy director Ella Woods-Joyce said YouTube had been handed a “sweetheart deal” that gave it an unfair advantage. “Handing one major social media platform a sweetheart deal of this nature – while subjecting every other platform in Australia to stringent compliance obligations – would be illogical, anti-competitive and shortsighted. “The government’s arguments citing unique educative value do not survive even the most cursory of closer examinations,” she added in a submission to a government agency. It would “further entrench Google’s market dominance”, she said, referring to YouTube’s parent company. Meta – the parent company of Facebook and Instagram – made similar arguments against the exemption. “This proposed blanket exception makes a mockery of the government’s stated intention, when passing the age ban law, to protect young people,” Meta said in its own submission. “YouTube has the very features and harmful content that the government has cited as justifying the ban.” Both firms argued they produced video content that was virtually indistinguishable from YouTube’s. The ban is set to come into effect by December 2025. – AFP oCK Hutchison to sell majority stake in ports unit to BlackRock-led group WASHINGTON: The US economy is set to experience some “disturbance” from tariffs, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, as trade tensions flare after he imposed sweeping levies on Mexico, Canada and China. Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress came after he pushed forth with tariff hikes on the three countries over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. This drew a sharp rebuke from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and retaliatory levies. China responded too with countermeasures, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum similarly promised pushback. “Tariffs are not just about protecting American jobs. They’re about protecting the soul of our country,” Trump said on Tuesday. “There’ll be a little disturbance, but we’re okay with that. It won’t be much,” he added. Earlier on Tuesday, a furious Trudeau accused Trump of trying to cause the collapse of Canada’s economy to make it easier for the US to annex his country, and blasted Washington for targeting a close ally while “appeasing” Russia over Ukraine. Trump’s 25% duties on Mexican and Canadian imports affect everything from avocados to the lumber crucial for building US homes, snarling supply chains for key sectors like automobiles. Canadian energy resources face a lower rate. Trump also inked an order on Monday to increase a previously imposed 10% tariff on China to 20% – piling atop existing levies on various Chinese goods. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, however, told Fox Business on Tuesday that Trump could dial down hefty levies on Canada and Mexico this week, while maintaining pressure on China. “I think he’s going to work something out with them. “Somewhere in the middle will likely be the outcome, the president moving with the Canadians and Mexicans, but not all the way.” On Tuesday, Trump also took aim in his speech at the European Union and countries including Brazil, India and South Korea over what he called “unfair” practices. He said reciprocal tariffs tailored to US trading partners would “kick in” on April 2. Businesses have warned that higher import costs could raise prices for consumers. – AFP legal status of its contract to operate the ports after the local attorney general determined the contract “unconstitutional”. CK Hutchison, controlled by billionaire tycoon Li Ka-shing, has businesses in areas as varied as infrastructure, retail and telecom. The sale of the ports unit does not include any interest in Hutchison Port Holdings HPH Trust, which operates ports in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and South China, or any other ports in China, the conglomerate said in the statement. Sixt said the transaction was the result of “a rapid, discrete but competitive process” during which CK Hutchison received numerous bids and expressions of interest. JPMorgan in a report said while selling the Panama business is “understandable”, the deal is nevertheless a “surprise” given most of CK Hutchison’s other ports are not in regions directly exposed to Sino-US geopolitical tension. – Reuters Musk fails in bid to block OpenAI becoming for-profit business SAN FRANCISCO: A US judge on Tuesday denied Elon Musk’s request to prevent OpenAI from becoming a for-profit business in a loss for the tycoon amid his feud with Sam Altman. US district court judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Musk and his xAI startup failed to prove an injunction against OpenAI was necessary as the case heads to trial. Musk sued in California federal court to stop OpenAI from transitioning from a nonprofit to a for-profit business, arguing the startup violated antitrust law and betrayed his trust in their mission as a co-founder of OpenAI. The judge wrote that, while Musk did not prove the need for an injunction, she is prepared to expedite a trial on that claim later this year. The ruling leaves OpenAI free to continue its transition from nonprofit to for-profit enterprise. Musk’s injunction bid argued that OpenAI’s co-founders “took advantage of Musk’s altruism in order to lure him into funding the venture”, according to court documents. – AFP

At 5pm, the FBM KLCI rose 8.76 points or 0.56% to 1,564.42 from yesterday’s close of 1,555.66. The market bellwether opened 4.90 points higher at 1,560.56, and moved between 1,560.56 and 1,569.61 throughout the day. On the broader market, gainers trumped decliners 663 to 372, while 411 counters were unchanged, 885 untraded, and six suspended. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said that Asian markets also ended in positive territory, buoyed by China’s measures to combat deflation, as well as strong gross domestic product and purchasing managers’ index data from the region. “As China’s annual legislative session began, the country reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a five per cent economic growth in 2025. “China’s Premier, Li Qiang pledged increased government expenditure and further initiatives to stimulate economic expansion,” he told Bernama. Back home, he expects China’s stimulus efforts to positively impact regional markets, including Malaysia. BIZ & FINANCE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 20 SUNBIZ presents extracts of a selection of commentaries and research reports received from stockbrokers on counters that could be of interest to investors. Even so, we still expect the group to declare one, probably in June, to be approved during its AGM then. Given its strong results, we think that the group is in a position to at least sustain its Q4’23 quantum of 69 sen. Along with its interim DPS of 26.5 sen (31.5 sen in FY23), total DPS for FY24 would be 95.5 sen (100.5 sen in FY23) – a potential yield of 5.2%. Given prevailing earnings uncertainties, we have assumed a constant 95.5 sen DPS for subsequent years as well. Medical insurance premiums total about RM700 million. This accounts for about 18% of Allianz Life’s gross written premiums (GWP) of RM3.8 billion in FY24, and only 10% of Allianz Group’s total GWP of RM7.2 billion. Management is of the view that it is too early to gauge the financial impact of the move to cap premium increases at 10% per annum, given that the claims experience needs to be correspondingly assessed. What is of comfort is that the insurance companies are in active talks with hospitals and other stakeholders, in trying to bring down the cost of future claims. What is positive is that Allianz Life continues to see strong growth. GWP in 2024 rose 8%, with stronger growth in Bancassurance (+26.9%) and Employee Benefits (+14.5%). Its annualised new premiums rose 15.1%, which was almost double the industry’s growth pace of 8.6%, and its market share improved to 10.4% from 9.8% in 2023. New business value rose 4.6% and its Contractual Service Margin increased 8.9%. HOLD with RM22.40 TP. – Maybank Investment Bank, March 5 FY24 earnings outperformance was propelled by a surge in IP/OP volumes (+10%/+9% HoH, +7%/+2% YoY), increased average revenue per IP/OP owing to more complex case-mix (+5%/+6% YoY), and roll-out of KPJ’s centralized procurement (CP) initiative which strengthened Q4’24’s EBITDA margin to 27.1% (+7.2ppts YoY, +3.9ppts QoQ). Out of its five hospitals under gestation, four have reached EBITDA breakeven (except for KPJ Miri), and all five recorded a pre-tax improvement of +34% with FY24 LBT of RM90 million (FY23: -RM137 million) – marking steady progress towards recovery. KPJ targets +300 operational beds in FY25 as part of its long-term plan to land at 6,000 beds by FY30 (3,847 beds @ end-FY24) in support of growing patient demand (FY24 BOR: 69% vs. FY23 BOR: 67%). This two-pronged strategy to enhance revenue intensity will be supported by the CP initiative, where >85% of its 29 hospitals are already onboarded. We expect FY24’s strengthened EBITDA margin of 24% (+1.7ppts YoY) to remain resilient into FY25-27. Additionally, KPJ’s robotic-enhanced surgical capabilities and quality of care remains attractive to foreign patients (FY24 MT revenue: RM232 million, +22% YoY) especially for its key hospitals in Klang Valley (Ampang Puteri, DSH2) and Johor (within JS-SEZ). We like KPJ’s COE and hub-and-spoke model as it allows for consolidation of specialized medical services/expertise and niche critical infra in its key hospitals, reducing duplication of high-cost medical equipment and encourages efficient patient flow. KPJ has also embarked on a DRG casemix analysis exercise to improve its operational efficiency as it gears up for the potential implementation of DRG in the mid-to-longer term. BUY with RM3.00 TP. – Maybank Investment Bank, March 5 Q4’24 headline PATMI of RM26 million (+215% YoY, +51% QoQ) was, in part, lifted by net FV gain on biological assets & forestry (RM11 million) and unrealised FX gain (RM4 million). Adjusted, Q4 core PATMI of RM14 million (-2% YoY, -27% QoQ) brings 12M’24 core PATMI to RM45 million (+162% YoY), just 85% of our forecast. The earnings shortfall was due to lower-than-expected CPO ASP achieved in Q4’24 of RM4,345/t (vs. MPOB CPO ASP of RM4,840/t). The sharp drop in Q4’24 FFB output (-14% YoY, -11% QoQ) also contributed to earnings pressure. We estimate its 12M’24 all-in cost-to-customer at RM2,769/t (-4% YoY). THP managed to have substantially completed its full-year fertiliser plan for FY24. 12M’24 FFB output (+3% YoY) was 98% of our full-year FFB forecast due to slowing output towards year end. Heavy rainfall and flash floods affected some of its estates’ operations in early 2025. In Jan 2025, THP reported a 16% YoY decline in FFB output (-23% MoM). Although THP targets a 15% YoY FFB growth for FY25, we have only imputed a +5% YoY growth for FY25. Following subdued Q4’24 results, we have cut our FY25/26 core PATMI forecasts by 14%/20% respectively on slightly lower CPO ASPs (-1%) and higher unit cost to account for higher-thanexpected minimum wage cost guidance. We introduce our FY27E PATMI forecast. THP proposed a final DPS of 3sen (ex-date: April 4). THP’s key catalyst remains the speed of its deleveraging exercise to improve its balance sheet position. It continues to earmark RM809 million of its assets for disposal as at end-Dec 2024. At 6pm, the domestic unit was significantly higher at 4.4270/4320 against the US dollar from 4.4635/4680 at Tuesday’s close. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes noted that the greenback is losing steam fast, as weaker US economic data fully offset any negative impact from tariffs, allowing traders to reprice growth expectations and shift into regional currencies such as the ringgit. “Adding to the bullish momentum, China’s National People’s Congress outcome was taken favourably. While not groundbreaking, Beijing’s decision to maintain its 5% growth target provided a steady hand for Asian markets, reinforcing stability across regional assets,” he told Bernama. Innes said Germany’s large stimulus package has impacted global markets, especially in export-driven economies like Malaysia, which could benefit from higher European demand. Meanwhile, the ringgit was traded mostly lower against major currencies. It was lower against the British pound to 5.6825/6889 from 5.6789/6846 on Tuesday, fell against the euro to 4.7409/7462 from 4.6916/6963 but rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9614/9647 from 2.9956/9989. The local currency traded mixed against Asean currencies. It rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.3126/3166 from 3.3203/3242 and went up against the Thai baht to 13.1545/1756 from 13.1853/2057. Income distribution of 11.4 sen per unit for PMB syariah fund KUALA LUMPUR: PMB Investment Bhd, an Islamic fund management company (IFMC) under Pelaburan Mara Bhd declared an income distribution of 11.4 sen per unit for the PMB Shariah Growth Fund for the financial year ended Feb 28, 2025, amounting to a total gross distribution of RM12,363,864.07. The Net Asset Value (NAV) per unit before the distribution was RM1.6638, adjusted to RM1.5498 after the distribution. The distribution, credited based on the ex-date of Feb 28, 2025, represents a yield of 7.02% based on the closing NAV per unit. Chief investment officer Hang Tuah Amin Tajudin stated, “The PMB Shariah Growth Fund continues to demonstrate resilience and strength, delivering an impressive five-year return of 67.47% as of Feb 28, 2025 or average of 13.49% per year over 5 years. This milestone reflects our disciplined investment strategy, which prioritises Shariah-compliant equities and strategic asset allocation to optimise investor returns. We remain committed to identifying high-potential opportunities within robust sectors, ensuring longterm sustainable growth.” PMB Shariah Growth Fund adheres to a well-defined asset allocation strategy, with 80% to 99.5% of its NAV invested in Shariah-compliant equities and equity-related securities. The remaining portion is allocated across Islamic money market instruments, Islamic deposit placements, sukuk, and other permissible Shariah-compliant investments. LYFE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 22 DURING the sacred month of Ramadan, the home will transform into sanctuaries for reflection and connection. As we prep for this blessed time, efficient and affordable storage solutions can be a game-changer. Whether you are stocking up the pantry, prepping meals for sahur and iftar or creating a space of tranquillity, the right storage can help make your home feel more organised and your mind at ease, all while making the most of what you already have and minimising waste. Here are five storage superstars that will help you do just that: Freshness, convenience and no waste Nourishing meals are essential during Ramadan. However, busy work schedules can make meal preparation challenging. Airtight food containers offer a practical solution, helping keep your fridge and pantry organised as you plan your meals for the week. Additionally, resealable bags and food containers can help keep leftovers fresh, prevent spoilage and make it easy to reach and reheat when needed — making sure that nothing goes to waste. LYFE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 23 Nature meets city living CITY living often comes with compromises such as smaller spaces, less greenery and the constant hum of urban noise. EdgeWood Residences at SkySanctuary, Setapak, challenge this norm by creating an environment where modern comfort coexists with nature and wellness. As the latest completed residential project by SkyWorld Development Bhd, it pays attention to sustainable design, energy efficiency and community-focused living, making it an urban retreat in every sense. Sustainable design From the moment you step into EdgeWood Residences, the difference is evident. The development is surrounded by lush greenery, anchored by the 2.92-acre SkySanctuary central park. Designed as a cooling green lung, the park’s landscape and water features help lower surrounding temperatures, creating a fresher and more comfortable atmosphere. The residences themselves are designed to maximise natural light and airflow, with over 75% daylight coverage per unit and crossventilation features that improve air circulation. This ensures that indoor spaces feel open and refreshing, reducing the need for artificial EdgeWood Residences’s facade, with 425 planter boxes, offering a distinctive statement to welcome residents and visitors. oEdgeWood Residences combine greenery, energy efficiency, modern convenience Ű BY THASHINE SELVAKUMARAN Things to consider before setting up aquarium in home ONCE upon a time, specialist aquarium shops were seen in almost every neighbourhood. But this acquatic hobby has gone out of style somewhat and turned niche. Still, many fancy having a water feature inside their home. The soothing sound of water flowing through the filtration system and the soft whirr of the oxygen pumps lend a calming effect to a home. This tranquility is further accentuated by the usual soft blue or green light accompanying most aquariums. If you are looking to add an aquarium to your home, here are a few things to consider: Size Fish tanks come in a variety of sizes, including small, corner-fitting units and micro-units that sit on a desktop. Larger ones can stretch up to six feet in length and will be able to house more or larger specimens of fish. Make sure you accurately measure the dimensions of the location where you wish to place the fish tank. Ensure there is enough room lest the aquarium ends up Choose the fish species based on your budget and the amount of time you are willing to spend on this hobby. – PEXELSPIC Ű BY R.BALA SkyWorld CEO Lee Chee Seng showing a unit to media representatives, highlighting its craftsmanship. dominating the entire space at the expense of other features you wish to highlight. Just gazing at swimming fish has been shown to significantly reduce blood pressure, so the last thing you want to do is take on a task too big to handle, leading to unwanted headaches and increased blood pressure! Water access Make sure the aquarium has easy access to water for cleaning purposes. Fish tanks need to be serviced and the water regularly changed, so this is a must. Last thing you want is having to pull lengthy hoses or worse, ferry bucketloads of water to and fro, creating a mess. Power points The same goes for power points. Aquariums will need oxygen pumps, filtration systems and lighting. Ensure there is at least one electrical socket nearby to power these items, which will be running 24/7. You do not want having coils of unsightly power cables ruining the aesthetic of the room. That would be self-defeating. Filtration For those with fur allergies, an aquarium is a great alternative to cats, dogs and even hamsters. A fur-free environment should not then be substituted with a funkysmelling fish tank. Do the necessary research or speak to fellow enthusiasts on the best filtration system for the size of your fish tank. Species Will you opt for freshwater fish or the saltwater variety? The main consideration here is how much time and money you are willing to spend. A marine aquarium containing neon-coloured saltwater fish and living corals is a sight to behold but it does require additional expense. Getting the aquarium’s conditions right can be quite tricky and the consequence can be a tank of dead (expensive) marine fish! Conversely, fresh water aquariums are a bit easier to maintain and can just be as delightful to watch. Give these factors proper consideration and you are well on your way to brightening your home with a beautiful water feature. lighting and air-conditioning. Sustainability plays a key role in shaping the living experience. The smart façade design minimises heat absorption, keeping homes naturally cooler, while energy-efficient fittings and rainwater harvesting systems promote eco-conscious living. High-speed inverter lifts operate with 30% less energy than conventional lifts, reducing power consumption without compromising convenience. These features contribute to EdgeWood Residences’s Bronze greenRE certification, recognising its commitment to environmentally friendly practices. Great comfort, community life Comfort extends beyond the four walls of each home. Thoughtfully designed facilities encourage a balanced lifestyle, from the open-concept function pavilion for social gatherings to the co-working space that supports productivity in a relaxed setting. For families, the kids’ playroom and mini cinema provide entertainment options, while fitness enthusiasts can enjoy the lap pool and surrounding jogging trails. Security is also a priority, with car-plate recognition technology ensuring smooth and safe entry for residents. Soundproofing technology enhances the peaceful atmosphere, reducing external noise levels from 70dB to 50dB or below, making homes quieter and more serene. Beyond the residences, Sama Square is located just a short distance away. It adds to the convenience of city living. This vibrant retail hub meets essential and lifestyle needs, offering a variety of grocery options, pharmacies, speciality stores and daily services. Dining choices range from bakeries and dessert parlours to pizzerias and cafes. Beauty and wellness services, hobby shops and convenience stores complete the mix, making Sama Square a good extension of modern, well-rounded living for EdgeWood residents. Future-ready home for generations EdgeWood Residences is carefully designed with the future in mind. The integration of passive design strategies, eco-friendly materials and energy-saving innovations ensures long-term sustainability and lower utility costs for residents. As urban developments continue to evolve, this project stands as a model for healthier, smarter living, setting a benchmark in sustainable city homes. With its blend of nature and thoughtful design, Edgewood Residences offers a lifestyle that nurtures well-being while embracing the conveniences of city life.

LYFE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 24 /theSunMedia FOLLOW ON YOUTUBE / Malaysian Paper Biopic captures essence of Bob Dylan DIRECTED by James Mangold, A Complete Unknown transports audiences to the vibrant music scene of 1960s New York, a time of revolutionary sounds and cultural upheaval. This biographical musical drama is not a typical one. It is a slow, thoughtful retelling of Bob Dylan’s formative years, inviting viewers to reflect on the complexities of fame, identity and artistic freedom. Clocking in at a substantial runtime, this is not a film for those expecting fast-paced action. The narrative unfolds deliberately, requiring viewers to absorb the atmosphere, dialogue and music. However, for those willing to invest the time, it rewards with an Chalamet captures the essence of the artiste with his spot-on performance. – PICS FROM IMDB oLengthy film requiring patience focuses on artiste’s early rise to stardom Ű BY YASMIN ZULRAEZ The film is bound to generate renewed interest in Dylan’s work. immersive experience that holds attention through its rich storytelling and stellar performances. Dynamic duo At the centre of A Complete Unknown are two powerhouse performances: Timothee Chalamet as Dylan and Elle Fanning as Sylvie. Chalamet fully embodies the young Dylan, capturing his quiet intensity, enigmatic personality and unmistakable voice. His commitment to the role is evident in his live performances, making it feel like Dylan himself is on screen rather than an actor playing him. Fanning, meanwhile, brings depth and emotional weight to the film as Sylvie, a character inspired by Bob’s real-life muse Suze Rotolo. Her portrayal balances warmth and strength, offering a counterpoint to Bob’s restless ambition. The chemistry between Chalamet and Fanning feels authentic, making their dynamic one of the film’s emotional anchors. Together, they create a compelling portrait of a relationship caught in the tides of fame, artistry and personal conflict. Chalamet’s quiet brilliance and Fanning’s grounded presence make A Complete Unknown as much a personal story as it is a musical one. Patience required, earned A Complete Unknown is not for everyone. The film’s pacing is slow, its tone introspective and its storytelling subtle. Those seeking high drama or rapid-fire dialogue may find themselves restless. However, for viewers who come prepared for a contemplative experience, the film delivers in spades. It perfectly captures the cultural spirit of the 1960s while offering deep insights into the artistic struggle between creative expression and public expectation. The message is clear: this is a film that must be felt as much as it is watched. Authentic 60s vibe Mangold successfully recreates the atmosphere of 1960s New York, with smoky clubs, intimate performance spaces and the charged energy of a city on the brink of cultural revolution. The cinematography captures the era’s moodiness, while the sound design highlights every strum of the guitar and each note sung by Chalamet. The film’s live performances stand out, adding a raw and immersive quality that transports audiences into the heart of the era’s folk music movement. For music lovers, this attention to detail is a treat, offering an auditory journey that complements the visual storytelling. Stellar supporting cast While Chalamet and Fanning command the spotlight, the supporting cast is equally impressive. Edward Norton brings depth as folk scene mentor Pete Seeger, balancing idealism with pragmatic concerns. Monica Barbaro delivers a compelling turn as Joan Baez, adding layers of tension and chemistry to the story. Boyd Holbrook’s portrayal of Johnny Cash injects charisma and lightness, while Scoot McNairy’s Woody Guthrie serves as a poignant reminder of the generational shifts in American music. Every performance feels essential, contributing to the film’s rich tapestry. Rewarding watch for right audience A Complete Unknown is a cinematic reflection on music, fame and the cost of individuality. For those ready to embrace its slow pace and introspective tone, it offers a rich, rewarding experience. But viewers should approach it with the right mindset: this is not a thrill ride, it is a thoughtful journey. For those willing to take the ride, A Complete Unknown will stay with them long after leaving the cinema. 0 DIRECTOR: James Mangold 0 CAST: Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, Monica Barbaro, Joe Tippett E-VALUE 7 ACTING 8 PLOT 7 Five recommended albums for newbies THOSE who watched the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown may be tempted to dip their toes into this legendary performer’s back catalogue. But with the folk rock legend’s discography including 40 studio albums, 21 live albums, 17 volumes of The Bootleg Series, 44 compilation albums, numerous soundtracks and EPs, the task can seem a little overwhelming. Here theSun picks the five essential albums newbies should dive into to experience the glory that is Dylan. Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963) This is the singer’s second album and the one that launched him into mainstream consciousness. With standout tracks such as Blowin’ in the Wind and A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall showcasing the rising star’s prowess as a lyricist, it marks a turning point in rock history where artistes took greater creative control of albums. There would be less reliance on professional songwriters as Dylan’s 11 original compositions on this record show just what an album can sound like when it is a purer reflection of the artiste. Dylan’s back catalogue is immense and can be intimidating to new listeners, featuring 40 studio and 21 live albums. – PIC FROM FACEBOOK @BOBDYLAN Ű BY R.BALA Blood on the Tracks turns 50 this year and is Dylan’s most commercially successful album. – PIC FROM FACEBOOK @PITCHFORK Highway 61 Revisited (1965) This album marks Dylan’s continuing evolution as an artiste, moving further afield from his original folk roots to encompass a wider rock sound. A full backing band gives each tune real meat, compared to the previous stripped down folk tunes featuring Dylan and just his acoustic guitar (and harmonica), the album features iconic tunes such as Like a Rolling Stone and Queen Jane Approximately. The sprawling 11-minute blues narrative Desolation Row is also a highlight, showcasing the power of lyrics in a fast maturing rock scene. Blonde on Blonde (1967) A double album that was partly recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, it has often been described as one of the greatest albums of all time. Featuring crack session musicians from the area’s thriving music scene, Dylan sharpened his lyrical sensibilities to a razor’s edge as heard on the magical narratives of LeopardSkin Pill-Box Hat and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Visions of Johanna is also ranked by many fans as among his finest compositions, in a career littered with them. Even casual listeners will recognise this as a work of genius. Blood on the Tracks (1975) Artistes must suffer for their art. In Blood on the Tracks, Dylan drew on his collapsing marriage for inspiration. Needless to say, the album is filled with anger, recriminations, regret and no small amount of poignancy. With songs titles such as Buckets of Rain and Shelter from the Storm speaking volumes, this album remains Dylan’s most commercially successful one, reaching the apex of the US album charts. Bittersweet ruminations of a relationship gone wrong has never been so eloquently captured. Time Out of Mind (1997) This late career offering is a highlight as it catches the singer in a reflective mood, having survived a serious health scare during the recording process. Produced by Daniel Lanois (U2, Emmylou Harris), Time Out of Mind was both a critical and commercial success, with it bagging the Grammy for Album of the Year. It leans heavily on Dylan’s blues influence, with the brush of mortality bringing his life and career into sharp focus. Despite being an octogenarian, Dylan continues to tour and record music until this day. But these are the standouts in a career filled with high points. Dive headlong into these albums and it will prove to be far more rewarding than relying on random playlists or compilations as an introduction to this Nobel laureate’s music.

LYFE THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 25 Oscars highlights oTrending discourses on award show AS the drapes came down for the prestigious film event, the internet was still abuzz with the Oscars and its affair. In its 97th edition, the Academy Awards (Oscars) still upholds its place as a platform for creative expression, political statements and celebration of film making. Despite its reputation for systemic racism and favouritism, the Oscars remains every movie maker and actor’s aspiration. As such, the Sunday night event created multiple discourses online that celebrated the actors and questioned the fraternity’s integrity. Cynthia Erivo–Ariana Grande performance “The theatre kids won,” exclaimed fans on TikTok when Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang a medley of songs from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz and Wicked. Putting on a true theatrical show, from costumes to the performance itself, the minimalistic approach to the stage highlighted the gravitas of the duo’s voices and their significance in the movie. Grande donned a ruby red haute couture Schiaparelli gown with a 3D trompe l’oeil vintage shoe detail at the back, a reference to the ruby red shoes in The Wizard of Oz. Meanwhile, Erivo swapped her emerald green custom made Louis Vuitton red carpet gown for a floralembellished white princes gown by Vivienne Westwood. The set opened with Grande singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the original 1939 film The Wizard of Oz — she last sang it at her One Love Manchester benefit concert, in which she got emotional over the Manchester Arena bombing. The stage was then followed by Erivo’s rendition of Home from the 1978 film The Wiz. The prima donnas then performed Defying Gravity from the latest film Wicked as a symbolic musical nod to constant exploration of the emerald world. Erivo closed the performance with her iconic empathetic war cry that was flawless and almost a statement to the movie as well as its cast being snubbed at music and film award shows. The very bare and intentional performance was made special with statement dresses and immaculate singing. Emilia Perez controversy Ever since the start of the awards season, Emilia Perez has been talk of the town and all for the wrong reasons. Having won multiple awards and breaking records, the movie is embroiled in controversy for being tone deaf — figuratively and literally. The Spanish-language French musical crime-comedy film, directed by Jacques Audiard, follows a Mexican cartel leader. Since its release, the Mexican community have criticised the movie for capitalising on the country’s struggles as it lacks cultural sensitivity and context. Emilia Perez was also condemned for winning over Wicked, especially in the music category — as the latter was a virtuoso musical. Acknowledging the growing criticism over the movie, Zoe Saldana apologised after winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress when a journalist told her the film had been “hurtful” for Mexicans. “I am very, very sorry that you and so many Mexicans felt offended. That was never our intention,” said Saldana, adding that she is open for dialogues on how the movie could have been better. Her apology was deemed dismissive and netizens shifted to ridicule the awful, off-key “song speech” by Emilia Perez’s songwriter Camille Dalmais, who also sang Ratatouille’s soundtrack Le Festin. The many wins of Emilia Perez may have been the film fratenity’s backfired attempt at being inclusive. Awarding a film that is technically inferior to its counterparts is the picture-book example of being performative. The “inclusivity” of Emilia Perez was not without its controversies — perhaps, award shows should be more socially aware when screening their winners. Snubs and first wins A half circus and half Broadway show, the Oscars’s main discourse was — obviously — snubs and wins. Following Timothee Chalamet’s realistic speech about wanting to be one of the greats after winning Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, many rooted for the young actor to win an Oscar too. Instead the Oscar for Best Actor went to Adrien Brody for his role in The Brutalist, which was met with disdain as netizens chimed in that it should have gone to Chalamet or Sebastian Stan who played a convincing Donald Trump in the movie The Apprentice. This created a discourse over authenticity in the film industry as filmmakers of The Brutalist resorted to using artificial intelligence (AI) because Brody could not get the Hungarian accent right for the movie. Many shared concerns that using AI in movie making takes away the humanity aspect in film — other than that, the actor was also ridiculed for giving a very lengthy speech after winning the award. In the Wicked-Emilia Perez conflict, netizens cried foul as Wicked experienced another set of snubs in which Grande lost the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Saldana. The award was the American–Dominican actress’s first Academy Award. A much welcomed win, Wicked picked up the Oscar for Best Costume Design, making the movie’s costume designer Paul Tazewell the first Black man to win the statuette. Feline-centric animation Flow became the first Latvian film to have won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and Brazil also got its first win for Best International Feature, I’m Still Here. Gaza-Israel conflict documentary No Other Land took home an Oscar for Best Documentary. The directors, Yuval Abraham and Basel Adra, addressed the conflict, called for ceasefire and challenged the fraternity for its dystopian facade. All in all, the night was a reflection of Hollywood’s ever-evolving identity — a place of artistry, activism and, inevitably, contradiction of its ethos. SPORTS THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 28 MADISON KEYS says staying grounded in the wake of her breakthrough Grand Slam title at the Australian Open will be key to building on that success as she heads into the Indian Wells hard court tournament this week. “Coming into this tournament, I would be lying if I said that I don’t have more expectations after having the start of the year that I do,” Keys said yesterday as she prepared for her first tournament since Melbourne. The 30-year-old American thwarted Aryna Sabalenka’s bid for a third-straight Australian Open title in January, a triumph that was the culmination of a 15-year journey from teenage prodigy to major winner. Keys, the fourth-oldest first-time winner of a major since the Open Era began in 1968, said it was “really important for me and for my team to remember how we got there and what we were doing. “And I think kind of going back to that, and staying really grounded in that is going to be really important,” said Keys, adding that she would try to balance honesty in terms of expectations with “knowing that I don’t think anyone really thrives when you have such a dramatic mind shift so quickly after success.” Keys is the fifth seed in a WTA field headed by world No. 1 Sabalenka. Defending champion Iga Swiatek is seeded second ahead of Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka, Swiatek and Gauff have won just one singles title among them this year – Sabalenka’s victory in Brisbane – and none has made a final since the Australian Open. They’ll be trying to reassert their dominance during the US hard court “Sunshine Double” of Indian Wells and Miami. Sabalenka says she’s moved on from her Australian Open disappointment and the Belarusian is eager to put another disappointing February behind her after early exits in Doha and Dubai. “February is not my month, I believe,” said Sabalenka, adding that now that she’s rested she really wans “to go as far as possible” in the California desert. Poland’s Swiatek could face a tricky second-round clash with Caroline Garcia if the French veteran wins her first-round match. – AFP 322 Notices Alcaraz taking softly-softly approach in quest for third straight Indian Wells title CARLOS ALCARAZ will take a softlysoftly approach as he vies to become just the third man to win three straight titles at Indian Wells, where he could find a member of that exclusive club, Novak Djokovic, standing in his way in the quarterfinals. “I will try not to think about it,” Alcaraz said of his bid to match the treble feat achieved by Djokovic in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and Roger Federer in 2004, ‘05 and ‘06. “I will try just to enjoy it,” Alcaraz told reporters yesterday as he prepped for the elite ATP Masters 1000 tournament that starts overnight alongside a WTA 1000 tournament. “This tournament, every time that I come here, I enjoy so much practicing, playing. Everything for me here is so easy. “So I will try not to think about it, just flow and see how it’s going to be, the tournament. But it is something that for me would be great to achieve.” Alcaraz, coming off a quarterfinal defeat in the Qatar Open, is seeded second behind Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who finished runner-up at the Australian Open to Italian world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Sinner last month accepted a belated three-month ban after testing positive a year ago for traces of banned Clostebol. Alcaraz said Sinner’s absence doesn’t change his approach “at all”. “I mean, Jannik’s not playing, but there are a lot of the best players in the world (that) are playing here,” he said. “I think the draw is really open. I’m just focused on my things, on myself, and I try to play good tennis here.” All 32 seeded players receive a first-round bye, and Djokovic could face a tricky secondround opener against Nick Kyrgios. The Australian, who fell to Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final, will open against a qualifier. Top-seeded Zverev is chasing a first Indian Wells title while third-seeded American Taylor Fritz lifted the trophy in the California desert in 2022. Norway’s Casper Ruud is seeded fourth and Russian Daniil Medvedev – runner-up to Alcaraz the past two years – is seeded fifth. The first-round spotlight will be on wild card Joao Fonseca, the 18-year-old Brazilian who upset Andre Rublev at the Australian Open and lifted his first ATP title in Buenos Aires in February. Fonseca will open his campaign against Britain’s Jacob Fearnley, who has climbed from outside the top 500 in he world rankings this time last year to 81st. – AFP Virat leads India to Champions Trophy final VIRAT KOHLI produced a trademark innings with a polished 84 as India pulled off a tense chase to beat Australia by four wickets in the first semifinal of the Champions Trophy yesterday. Set 265 for victory, India lost the 36-yearold Virat in the closing overs but KL Rahul’s unbeaten 42 steered the team home with 11 balls to spare at the Dubai International Stadium. “This game is all about pressure, especially in big games like semis and finals,” said player of the match Virat. “If you go deep into the innings and have wickets in hand, the opposition usually gives in and the game becomes easier. It is very important to control your impulses while the game is going on.” Australia elected to bat and posted 264 all out after strong knocks from captain Steve Smith, who made 73, and Alex Carey, who hit 61. In reply India lost two early wickets before Virat and Shreyas Iyer, who made 45, put the chase back on track in their partnership of 91. “I take pride in doing what my team wants,” added the 36-year-old Virat. “Those things (individual records) don’t matter anymore for me. It’s just about stepping out and hopefully doing the job for the team.” Smith said of Virat: “He’s arguably the best chaser the game has seen. He’s done it numerous times against us. “He controls the tempo of the game really well, plays to his strengths and takes the game deep.” – AFP BRIEFS ‘Positives’ for Australia despite exit AUSTRALIA captain Steve Smith yesterday said his team’s inexperienced bowlers would be “better for the exposure” after slipping to a Champions Trophy semifinal defeat by India yesterday. Australia were without their frontline pace trio for the tournament, with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood sidelined by injuries and Mitchell Starc out due to personal reasons. All-rounder Cooper Connolly replaced Matthew Short, who missed the semifinal through injury, while leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha was brought into the team for just his fourth ODI appearance. “I think we’ve got pretty good records in big games in ICC events and I thought the guys turned up and did a really good job,” Smith told reporters. “It’s obviously a bit of inexperience in our team, particularly our bowling attack. Some new guys there who I thought did a really good job as well. They’re going to be better for the exposure to a big event and playing against world-class players like the ones we came up against today and throughout the tournament. So, plenty of positives to take from it.” Raducanu ‘couldn’t see ball through tears’ EMMA RADUCANU revealed yesterday she “couldn’t see the ball through the tears” after being targeted by a stalker during last month’s Dubai WTA 1000 tournament. The British tennis star was left distraught after a man later said to be displaying “fixated behavior” appeared at a courtside seat during her defeat to Karolina Muchova. Former US Open champion Raducanu, 22, is making her first tournament appearance since her troubled Dubai campaign at this week’s event in California. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Raducanu said she was determined not to let the incident derail her career. “There’s a part of you that thinks, ‘I’m not gonna let a middle-aged creep stop me doing what I love to do,’” Raducanu told The Athletic. “I think the allure of Indian Wells being my favourite tournament, I just couldn’t really step away from it.” Recounting the details of her Dubai ordeal, Raducanu said: “I saw him first game of the match, and I was like: ‘I don’t know how I’m going to finish’. I literally couldn’t see the ball through the tears, I could barely breathe. It was a very emotional time and after the match I did completely break down in tears.” Size does not matter for Gavaskar BATTING great Sunil Gavaskar backed India skipper Rohit Sharma after a fatshaming post by an Indian politician, saying cricket is about skill not “modelling”. Shama Mohamed, a spokeswoman for India’s opposition Congress party, posted on X: “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!.” Shama came under fire for the post – later deleted – from media, pundits and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. “I have always said, if you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modelling competition and pick all the models. It’s not about that,” Gavaskar told India Today. Gavaskar spoke about how Indian batsman Sarfaraz Khan had also been “vilified” for his weight issues, but said it was performances that mattered. “I don’t think size has anything to do with it,” said Gavaskar. “It’s your mental strength, whether you can last the distance, that’s the most important thing. Bat well, bat for long, and score runs.” Easy does it Carlos Alcaraz. – AFPPIC Keys tries to temper expectations Madison Keys. – AFPPIC

SPORTS THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 29 UNAI EMERY praised Tyrone Mings after his redemption against Club Brugge helped Aston Villa put one foot in the Champions League quarterfinals. Just 118 days after Mings inexplicably picked up a goal kick in the penalty area to send Villa to defeat in November’s league phase match against the same opposition, he redeemed himself with a sensational goal-saving clearance which swung the balance of the match. It was finely poised at 1-1 after Leon Bailey’s opener after 135 seconds, which Mings set up, was cancelled out by Maxim De Cuyper. The centrehalf’s intervention to divert Hans Vanaken’s goalbound header proved pivotal as Brandon Mechele’s 82nd-minute own goal followed by Marco Asensio’s penalty six minutes later saw Villa grab the tie with both hands. “It is very important getting experiences. The first experience he had here was not good but today he reacted fantastic, playing focused, serious, saving one action that was a goal,” Emery said. “Of course I know the difficulties in football and how we can (have) experiences and how we can get better and analyse everything deeply and try and correct it, that is my only target with the players. “We corrected something from the match we played here. Of course we have to correct something we didn’t do well today here for the next week against Bruges.” Emery insisted it is not job done, despite Villa’s clear advantage going into next week’s second leg in Villa Park. “We are not in the quarterfinal,” he added. “There’s still 90 minutes to play, we’re ready in case we need extra-time and penalties because I know how difficult it is in each match and how we can change one match in 90 minutes. “The players, I’m sure they have experiences before as well with matches like that and we have to respect the opponent always. “There are still 90 minutes to play. They won against Atalanta 3- 1 and they compete very well. “We need to watch the match again with the players to understand the difficulties we can face against teams in Europe. “I am happy but calm, getting balance. There are still 90 minutes to play.” – The Independent/AFP Diaz earns Real lead Madrid edge Atletico in Champions League derby clash REAL MADRID claimed a small edge on city rivals Atletico Madrid with a tight 2-1 Champions League last-16 first leg win yesterday. Julian Alvarez levelled for Atletico after Rodrygo Goes sent the hosts ahead, but Brahim Diaz stroked home the winner for the record 15- time winners to delight the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. “I think we played a complete game today, (my) goal was good and it earned us the win, but it’s not over,” Diaz told Movistar. “There’s still the second leg and we have to give everything, like we did today.” Diego Simeone’s Atletico, who lost in the 2014 and 2016 finals against their bitter rivals, kept stars Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe quiet but still came up short. The Rojiblancos played it safe in the final stages, seeming to accept their one-goal disadvantage for the second leg derby clash at home next week. “For a moment we had the game under control, but we knew that it would not be an easy match, because they were at home and they have great players,” said Alvarez. “But we know there are 90 minutes to go… it’s one goal, and another game, at home with our fans.” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti demanded his side show a better attitude and more commitment than during their La Liga defeat by Real Betis on Saturday and his charges delivered. “It was a difficult game as usual. It always is against Atleti. In the first half we lost too many balls. We had unnecessary losses,” Ancelotti said, “Julian (Alvarez) scored. In the second half we were better. We were able to get the lead again and we held on. “The initial plan was to play on the wings, with Vini (Vinicius) and Rodrygo. It went well in the first play and then we lost patience. “We worked, we had control of the game. We pushed hard. But it was not the idea to press, but to be compact. And the team was compact throughout the game.” Ancelotti expects a difficult match at the Metropolitano next week, but believes his team is the favourites to advance to the round of 16. “We have achieved a small advantage and we are eager to go through. It will be difficult in the return leg. “Atleti will press a little more, but it will be even. The quality of both is very high. It is a round of 16 tie, but it could be a semifinal or a final. “We are not happy to play this tie against Atleti and they are not happy to play against Real Madrid either.” Atletico coach Simeone was disappointed that his side failed to capitalise on the control they had for long periods of yesterday’s match but was happy with how his team reacted to conceding an early goal “We should have taken better advantage when we had control of the game,” Simeone said. “It’s difficult to take risks so that with any counter-attack you end up losing the game. We controlled that situation very well, but we were missing (something) in the final metres.” Simeone remained hopeful for a comeback at the Metropolitano, calling on the fans for support. “That last play gives us hope for what’s to come. We will need our fans’ energy to turn the tie around.” Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente added: “We’re alive (in the tie) and we have to correct the mistakes we made and go for it in the second leg.” – AFP/Agencies BORUSSIA DORTMUND were held to a 1-1 home draw by Lille in their Champions League last-16 first leg yesterday after a second-half equaliser from visiting midfielder Hakon Haraldsson. Last season’s losing finalists were in control after Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring on 22 minutes, thumping in a low shot from the edge of the box. But Lille striker Jonathan David took advantage of some sleepy Dortmund defending in the 68th minute, threading a ball through to Haraldsson, who was one-on-one with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and poked home. “The second half was not good at all. Too little intensity off the ball and too little ball possession,” Dortmund captain Emre Can told Amazon Prime. “We didn’t push past the pain barrier – and that’s what you need to do against Lille. They’re a good team – they’re here in the last 16 for a reason. “We need to be more courageous – it wasn’t good enough today. We can do better and we will.” Despite the disappointment, Can said Dortmund would “travel there (Lille) riding high – we believe we can stay in the competition”. Midfielder Pascal Gross, who had a goal ruled out for offside, said Dortmund “lacked intensity”. “We lost the ball too often – it was simply not good,” said the former Brighton player. “(But) we’re starting at 0-0 next week. It’ll be tough but we’ve also got our strengths. We want to win there and keep going.” For Lille, the result boosts their hopes of reaching a first-ever Champions League quarterfinal. “We played a good game today, especially in the second half,” said Lille coach Bruno Genesio. “The 1-1 draw has put us in a very good position for the second leg. But we will have to deliver a very big game at home if we want to reach the quarterfinals.” – AFP/Reuters Redemption for Mings Ű BY JONATHAN VEAL Sociedad aim to increase Devils’ misery REAL SOCIEDAD are hoping to forget their struggles this season and compound Premier League giants Manchester United’s when they meet tomorrow (1.45am) in the Europa League last 16. The Basque side host Ruben Amorim’s tormented Red Devils in San Sebastian before the second leg at Old Trafford next week. Real Sociedad suffered a 4-0 thumping at La Liga leaders Barcelona on Sunday, continuing a poor domestic campaign, although they were missing several regular starters and were reduced to 10 men early on. “It’s in the past now and we have to prepare as best as we can for the game against United,” said coach Imanol Alguacil. Sitting ninth in La Liga the Europa League represents their best hope of silverware this season, as is also the case for United, who flunked out of the FA Cup on penalties against Fulham on Sunday. La Real are also in the Copa del Rey semifinals but a 1-0 home defeat by Real Madrid in the first leg leaves them in a tough spot before the return in April. With the Europa League final taking place at the home of their bitter rivals Athletic Bilbao, Alguacil’s side have all the stimulus they need. “It motivates Athletic for sure, and us too,” said club spokesman Xabi Prieto at the group stage draw in August. Luka Sucic and Spain’s Euro 2024 final hero Mikel Oyarzabal should return after knocks to face Manchester United. Live-wire winger Takefusa Kubo missed the defeat at Barcelona through suspension and will be fresh for tomorrow’s clash. After Aritz Elustondo’s early red card against Barcelona, Alguacil said he made decisions with the Man United Europa League tie in mind, including taking off key midfielder Martin Zubimendi at halftime, as he was suffering some discomfort. “I thought about minimising the risks and about the United game, knowing that it was very difficult to get anything positive (against Barca),” explained Alguacil. Manchester United are unbeaten in the Europa League this season but the visit to the Reale Arena is arguably their toughest test in the competition yet. “It’s going to be a tough one, a Spanish team that plays brilliant football, very, very good players up front, very (high) quality coming out from the back,” said United playmaker Bruno Fernandes. – AFP Dortmund held by Lille in Champions League first leg Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings celebrates after the Champions League last-16 first leg match against Club Brugge yesterday. – REUTERSPIC

Defiant Amorim United boss says building for future ‘more important’ than European success RUBEN AMORIM believes building for the future is “more important” to Manchester United right now than winning the Europa League. The Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League and have been knocked out of the FA Cup, meaning the continent’s second tier competition offers their only hope of silverware – and realistically European qualification. United’s fifth round shoot-out defeat to Fulham on Sunday heightened the importance of the Europa League and the round of 16 first leg at Real Sociedad tomorrow (1.45am Malaysian time). “Of course we lost last week in the Cup, so people are looking at this Europa League as the unique competition that we can win,” head coach Amorim told Sky Sports. “Also, the connection with winning the Europa League with Champions League (qualification following). “But, to tell you the truth, I think we have bigger things to think (about). “I know it’s strange to say that but it’s something that we are trying to build here, that is going to be more important than winning a cup in this moment. “I know the responsibility that we have to fight for every trophy, but in this moment we are trying to build something that is going to last more than any trophy this season.” Erik Ten Hag won trophies in both of his full seasons in charge, with a poor campaign ending on a high with victory over Manchester City in May’s FA Cup final, following Carabao Cup glory in 2023. United’s ultimate goal is to win the Premier League by their 150th anniversary in 2028, which Amorim highlighted directly after the defeat to Fulham – and was called “naive” by Wayne Rooney. The Portuguese immediately hit back at that and reiterated ahead of the trip to Spain that there are grand plans at a club making difficult cost-cutting decisions, including laying off a further 200 staff. “I understand what people are saying because if you look how our team is playing and the results, it’s hard to imagine big things in this moment for our club,” United boss Amorim said. “But in the darkest moment we have to have like a light in the path, and that is clear here. “I’m sure… I don’t know if I’m going to be here, but the way we are thinking things we are going to return and we are going to win in the future. “But then it’s the risk. We are doing a lot of things, we are not winning games, and when you don’t win games sometimes you have to change people, and we know that. “But as a club, I think we are doing a lot of things that are hard to do. A lot of people in the staff are paying that price, but we are doing the things that we should do to win in the future.” – The Independent BURNLEY conceded a goal for the first time in 13 Championship games, but still bolstered their promotion charge with a 2-1 win at Cardiff yesterday. Josh Brownhill and Maxime Esteve bagged first-half goals to put Scott Parker’s side in control in south Wales. Yousef Salech ended Burnley’s remarkable defensive record before the break with a firm header. Salech became the first player to score against Burnley in the league since Watford’s Kwadwo Baah on Dec 21, only the 10th goal Burnley have conceded in 35 games. It meant Manchester United’s record 14- game League run without conceding between November 2008 and February 2009 remains intact. Far more significant for Burnley’s bid to return to the Premier League, they are now within two points of second-placed Sheffield United in the race for automatic promotion. Cardiff remain five points above the relegation zone after suffering their first home defeat this year. Zak Vyner and Harry Cornick ended Bristol City’s woeful away run as they inspired a 2-0 win at Millwall. Vyner scored just his fourth goal in 221 appearances for the Robins to open the scoring in the second half. Cornick, making just his third appearance of the season, wrapped up the victory with seven minutes remaining. City’s first away win in 10 matches lifted them level on points with sixthplaced West Bromwich Albion in the battle for playoff berths. Joe Gelhardt and Abu Kamara scored second half goals as Hull beat fellow strugglers Plymouth 2-0 for their first home win in 2025. Gelhardt, on loan from Leeds, broke the deadlock and Kamara finished off the move of the match to seal Hull’s first win at the MKM Stadium since December. SPORTS THURSDAY | MAR 6, 2025 31 MALAYSIA’S professional men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is expected to clear the first round of the All England Championships in Birmingham, where he is drawn to play Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long. According to the draw released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the seventh seeded Zii Jia will meet the world No. 20 Ka Long, who has won only four times in 10 meetings with the Malaysian. Zii Jia has triumphed in their last five meetings stretching back to the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, held in October 2023. In contrast, debutant Leong Jun Hao faces a tough challenge in the opening round, having been drawn against Indonesia’s third seed and defending champion, Jonatan Christie. Nonetheless, the world No. 26 has a chance to pull off an upset, given that he won their most recent meeting. Top seed and 2018 winner Yu Qi Shi will face Christie’s compatriot, Indonesian Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, while there will be two big clashes between Denmark and Chinese Taipei. Fourth seed and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen faces Chun-Yi Lin, while second seed Anders Antonsen is drawn against Yu Jen Chi. In the women’s singles, South Korea’s An Se Young, who enters as top seed, will begin her bid to reclaim the crown she won in 2023 against China’s Fang Jie Gao. Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have also received a favourable draw as they will play Taiwan’s Teng Chun Hsun-Yang Chu Yun in the opening round. Should Pearly-Thinaah advance to the second round, they will meet either Taiwan’s Hsu Yin-Hui-Jhih Yun Li or Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, a relatively manageable challenge for them. Two other Malaysian pairs in the spotlight, men’s doubles duo Aaron ChiaSoh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, face tricky first-round encounters. Fifth-seeded Aaron-Wooi Yik must be wary of England’s world No. 15 duo Ben Lane-Sean Vendy, while Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have been drawn against South Korea’s Kim Gi Jung-Kim Sa Rang. In the mixed doubles, top-seeded Malaysians Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai will take on Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supisara Paewsampran, while Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are set to meet Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal KusharjantoGloria Emanuelle Widjaja. The All England Open Badminton Championships, or simply All England, is the world’s oldest and most prestigious badminton tournament. Played annually, it developed after the success of the world’s first open tournament held in Guildford in 1898. The tournament was successfully organised in April 4, 1899, however only three categories (Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles) were originally staged. Both Men’s and Women’s Singles were added the following year. The first two tournaments were named “Badminton Association Tournament” and it was eventually considered (especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949) the unofficial World Badminton Championships until 1977 when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. The Championships have only ever been halted twice: during World War I from 1915 to 1919 and World War II from 1940 to 1946. This years’s tournament will be held at Utilita Arena Birmingham from March 11 to 16. – Bernama/aAgencies Fortune favours the brave Zii Jia, Pearly-Thinaah get kind All England 1st round draw CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (Last 16, 1st leg): Club Brugge 1 (De Cuyper 12) Aston Villa 3 (Bailey 3, Mechele 82-og, Asensio 88-pen), Borussia Dortmund 1 (Adeyemi 22) Lille 1 (Haraldsson 68), PSV Eindhoven 1 (Lang 43-pen) Arsenal 7 (Timber 18, Nwaneri 21, Merino 31, Odegaard 47, 73, Trossard 48, Calafiori 85), Real Madrid 2 (Rodrygo 4, Diaz 55) Atletico Madrid 1 (Alvarez 32). In the clash at Buriram Stadium in Thailand, the home side dominated possession and created dynamic attacking moves but struggled with finishing, while also facing difficulties breaking down JDT’s disciplined defence. Buriram’s best chance in the first half came when striker Martin Boakye narrowly missed converting a low cross from Dion Cools from the right in the early minutes of added time. The match became more balanced in the second half as both teams adjusted their attacking strategies. Thai international forward Suphanat Mueanta came close to scoring in the 65th minute, but his powerful header from Lucas Crispim’s cross was brilliantly saved by JDT goalkeeper Andoni Zubiaurre Dorronsoro. JDT made a total of five substitutions, including the introduction of former Valencia forward Samu Castillejo, who made his debut for the Southern Tigers. However, he failed to make a significant impact, with JDT unable to find the net until the final whistle. The return leg between JDT and Buriram is set to take place at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri, next Tuesday. In other matches, a clinical strike from Anderson Lopes handed Yokohama F. Marinos a precious 1-0 advantage over Shanghai Port, though the Chinese champions remain alive thanks to goalkeeper Yan Junling’s heroics at Pudong Stadium. The 2023 runners-up showcased continental pedigree when Lopes broke through in the 30th minute, slotting home after intelligent interplay exposed Shanghai’s left flank. The Brazilian marksman nearly claimed a hattrick before halftime, but Yan produced two reflex saves to deny the talisman. In Tuesday’s other marquee tie, Al Ahli seized control of their knockout clash with a 3-1 home victory over Qatar’s Al Rayyan. Galeno’s opener and Riyad Mahrez’s rocket established dominance before Firas Al Brikan’s stoppage-time dagger effectively ended the contest. The Saudis now carry a two-goal cushion into next week’s return in Jeddah. – Bernama/Agencies Kuching FC’s game plan bears fruit THE players’ ability to execute the game plan contributed to Kuching City FC’s 2-0 victory over Sri Pahang FC in their rescheduled Super League match at the Temerloh Municipal Council Stadium on Tuesday, said Kuching City head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak yesterday. He said his squad deserved praise for their discipline and excellent execution, which secured them three valuable points. “In the first half, we knew Sri Pahang would push for a goal, but we worked to deny their efforts and our plan succeeded. “In the second half, we made some adjustments by bringing on fresher players to match our opponents, who had several foreign players in their lineup,” he said. Aidil Sharin said the move paid off when substitute Zahrul Nizwan Joe Kifli @ Zulkeflee netted the team’s second goal. “Zahrul is a quick player who can make an impact. He always works hard in defence and is aggressive in attack. “For this match, I just told him to enjoy the game, and his goal is a good sign for his development,” he said. He admitted that Sri Pahang were a tough team to beat, especially as this was their first home match in four games. Sri Pahang head coach Fandi Ahmad said his players’ eagerness to score led to their downfall. “We attacked frequently but lacked proper finishing. We were too focused on scoring, which made our midfield less compact. When we attacked without enough support from behind, it left openings for the opposition to counterattack,” he added. Fandi also admitted that his players lost their discipline, and their formation did not work as planned, despite starting the match in an organised manner. – Bernama FROM LEFT: Lee Zii Jia, Pearly Tan and M. A double from Martin Odegaard and individual strikes by Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori sent Arsenal on their way to a thumping 7-1 triumph – their biggest away win in the Champions League. It marked a remarkable reversal in fortunes for Arteta’s previously goal-shy side, who arrived in the Netherlands with three blanks from their last four outings and their Premier League dream up in smoke. But when asked if he could ever have envisaged such a scoreline, Arteta said with a smile: “I knew it was coming. “That is the beauty of football. Nobody in this room, if I gave you an envelope and said, ‘can you predict what’s going to happen tomorrow and who is going to score?’ would have predicted it. “But that’s the beauty of football. You put your head down, be humble, and analyse how you can improve. “We will enjoy tonight because it was a very impressive performance and an unbelievable score. We deserve that and I’ll take it. Today, we were exceptional.” Following a 1-0 defeat against West Ham and a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest in the League which leaves them 13 points adrift of Liverpool, Arsenal’s campaign had been in danger of fizzling out. However, Arteta’s men answered Timber’s pre-match call to change the narrative with an electric performance on the European stage – admittedly against a utterly lightweight PSV side – to put them on the brink of a last-eight match-up against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid. Without a recognised striker, Timber opened the scoring for the Gunners after 18 minutes before teenager Nwaneri and makeshift forward Merino extended Arsenal’s advantage inside half an hour. Noa Lang gave PSV hope from the penalty spot only for Odegaard to score 60 seconds after the restart, with Trossard adding the fifth a minute later. Odegaard doubled his tally with 17 minutes remaining and Calafiori completed the devastating rout – which surpassed Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Inter Milan in 2003 as the club’s biggest away from north London in the Champions League – in the closing moments. Commenting on his side’s record-breaking night, Arteta continued: “It’s something that hasn’t been done in the history of the club, so it is great to be part of that. But as a team we want to achieve many other things that are far more important. “It’s very significant and we are in a strong position to go through to the next round. And that is the reality. “But to put down landmarks we have to really make it to a very different level. It means a lot but that is not what we want. “I am happiest because we are in a very strong position to go to the next round, which is where we want to be. But there’s still a job to do in London for sure in a week’s time.” Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice speaking to Amazon Prime Sport said: “We were fluid, we had enthusiasm. We had the drive and hunger, it’s the knockout rounds of the Champions League. “But we have been playing like this all season. We spoke about a narrative but we players feel like we’ve been doing well. “Sometimes we score five or six, sometimes we score two or three, sometimes we can lose by one. “That’s where we need to keep pushing as a team with the mentality. Tonight we did that. “When they came back to make it 3-1, we could have sat back. But we pushed on and you saw that with the goals we scored in the second half. A massive performance.” The second leg, effectively now a dead rubber, will take place at the Emirates Stadium next week, with the Gunners back in action in the Premier League against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday (Mon 12.30am Malaysian time). – The Independent/Agencies www.thesun.my Free access to iPaper PDF Download SCAN ME Malaysian Paper Read iPaper at Malaysian Paper or download from app the App Store or Google PlayTM .
