March 2017 MARCH IS SEAGRASS AWARENESS MONTH
© 2016 David Schrichte. Plants, and especially seagrasses, are the manatee’s preferred food. These
underwater plants can die when water pollution and algal blooms, including brown tides, block sunlight
from reaching them. Tens of thousands of acres of seagrasses were killed recently by harmful algal
blooms in the Indian River Lagoon on Florida’s east coast.

© 2016 Red Huber with permission of The Orlando Sentinel. During the annual statewide manatee count in 2016, Wayne
wrote this in his online blog: “Cora, our Multimedia Specialist, and I counted 377 manatees, 26 of which were calves. We
saw Annie, Robin, Doc, Lily, Margarito, Lucille, Phyllis, Deep Dent, Philip, Gator, Paddy Doyle, and Whiskers (our adoptees).
Watch Blue Spring manatees all day at our webcams during the winter months and read Wayne’s thoughtful blog.

December 2017 © 2016 David Schrichte. A manatee is framed by submerged tree branches in Three Sisters Springs
(Citrus County, Florida). Researchers believe manatees can live up to 60 or more years of age in the wild.
In actuality, the majority are killed by human activity, or die from cold stress, or toxic red or brown tides
long before that.
Help manatees by making a year-end donation and get a tax deduction. Go to savethemanatee.org
