Irving Medical Center

Lorna M. Dove, MD, MPH is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University
Irving Medical Center and the Medical Director of Adult Liver Transplant in
the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at New York Presbyterian
Hospital.

Dr. Dove was born in North Carolina and started her academic career as a tar
heel. She received her medical degree from Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons and completed her residency and gastroenterology
fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. At UCSF she helped
develop the first clinics evaluating the impact of hepatitis C on patients with
AIDS. At Columbia, she led the center in the very first study evaluating liver
transplant in those infected with HIV. The greatest joys of her medical career
have been to participate in the amazing evolution of care in patients with
HIV and to witness the miracle of hepatitis C cure.

In 2001, she joined the liver transplant faculty of Columbia University under
the direction of Jean Emond and Robert Brown. Over nearly two decades,
the team has grown to greater than 100 faculty and staff spanning two
campuses and multiple outreach sites in the tri-state. Dr. Dove became the
medical director in 2007 and began leading the Columbia campus in 2015.
She has mentored countless students, residents and young faculty members.
The goal of the transplant center has always been to provide quality care to
all that enter regardless of where they started. Transplant is just one point
of an overall mission that includes education and preventative care. The
greatest measure of success for a hepatologist is not whom they save with
transplant but all who they prevented from needing a transplant.

Dr. Dove tries to live each day based on two principles she learned from her
father: be honest and do what is right. She accepts this honor tonight not for
herself but for her team members who work countless hours not for awards
or accommodations but because they are dedicated and care.

Faces of Liver Disease

ARIANEL MATEO

On February 12th, 2018 Arianel Mateo was born at
North Central Hospital in Bronx, NY.

Shortly after she was born, Arianel’s mother noticed
that something wasn’t right and that her eyes
were jaundiced. The doctors ran a few tests and
determined that Arianel’s bilirubin was too high. She
was kept in the ICU for almost 2 weeks until her
doctor advised Arianel’s mother that she suspected
her to have Biliary Atresia - a rare, life-threatening
disease that affects the liver in newborns.

Arianel was sent to Mount Sinai Hospital to see a liver specialist with her
mother by her side. After numerous examinations and tests Arianel was
scheduled for the Kasai procedure on March 22nd, 2018.

“Arianel is almost two years old now and it has been a beautiful experience
with her,” shared Arianel’s mother, Vianel. “As a first-time mom it has been
just breathtaking. I feel blessed to have her as my daughter. She has been
so strong. Life gave her another chance and she’s been living it in every way.
We are truly blessed.”

SCOTT HANLEY

Scott Hanley is a 55-year-old husband, father
of three, and recipient of a second chance at life
through liver donation.

After a routine colonoscopy in 2015, Scott’s results
showed that he was living with liver disease. Scott
was then added to the transplant list with hopes that
good news would come soon. The next three years
saw battles against cancer, in conjunction with the
liver disease.

In the fall of 2018, Scott was called to Mount Sinai Hospital for his life saving
transplant.

Complications left Scott in the hospital for longer than expected, but after
a hard-fought recovery he has resumed his favorite activities, including
softball, spending time with family, and watching the New York Yankees.

Faces of Liver Disease

PHILIP KENNELLY

Philip was born in July 2013 and was seemingly a
happy, healthy baby. At 6 weeks old Kim and Dan
Kennelly realized that the jaundice Philip had since
birth was not going away and insisted that they
finally retest his bilirubin. They received a call later
that day to get to the emergency room.

After many tests and a biopsy, it was determined
that Philip had Biliary Atresia. At 8 weeks old he
underwent a Kasai for a “temporary” fix.

Philip spent the next 2 years in and out of the hospital. It was then
determined that Philip should be listed for a liver transplant and his team
suggested looking into living donation. They discussed it as a family and
decided that Philip’s Dad, Dan, would get tested first. And he was a match!

On May 10th, 2016, both Phil and Dan were wheeled into the operating
room and their lives were forever changed. Both are doing great since,
and Dan sometimes forgets he even had surgery. Philip’s transplant has
allowed him to start first grade this year. He is a typical 6-year-old boy who
loves cars and playing with his brother. You would never know all that he
has been through if we didn’t tell you!

CARLA NEAL-HALEY, M.D.

Carla Neal-Haley, M.D. was born in 1964 in
Washington D.C. and always knew her purpose
was to be a healer. After a lifelong pursuit to
become a healer, the healer became the patient.

Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
(PSC) in 2011, she fought an eight-year battle
with life threatening and quality of life debilitating
liver disease. On April 29, 2019, the grace of God
and the liver advocacy community brought her an
angel of mercy; a living liver transplant donor.

Today, 6 months after being transplanted, Dr. Neal-Haley’s liver is healthy,
and she is regaining her strength. She is slowly returning to her practice
of medicine and her robust family life. She looks forward to refocusing her
energy on being a healer rather than being healed.
