this project is about.

• 2. Meaning of typographic syntax

Typographic syntax is arranging the actual letterforms to enhance the meaning of the word.
You can rotate them, stack them, make them varying sizes, replace letters with numbers or
symbols or other letters. Be creative! But if you are having to rely on elements added to the
letterforms to communicate the meaning you should probably rethink your idea.

B. Elements of typographic design

there are eight basic, universal typographical design elements:
typeface, hierarchy, contrast, consistency, alignment, white space, and color.

1. Examples of typographic syntax

In grammar, syntax is the manner in which words are combined to form phrases or
sentences. We define typographic syntax as the process of arranging elements into a
cohesive whole. The study of typographic syntax begins with its basic unit, the letter, and
progresses to word, line, column, and margin.

2. Characteristics of typographic syntax

Syntax
In grammar, the way in which words or phrases are put together to form sentences. In design, the connecting or ordering of typographic elements into a

visual unity.

Word
In computer systems, a logical unit of information, composed of a predetermined number of bits.

Column
a vertical section of text

Margin
The unprinted space surrounding type matter on a page.

Grid system
Underlying structure composed of linear framework used by designers to organize typographic and pictorial elements. Also, a film or glass master font,

containing characters in predetermined configuration and used in phototypesetting.

Asymmetry
Symmetry in which both halves of a composition are not identical. Also referred to as informal balance.

Symmetry
balance among the parts of something.

C. What is?

• The letter- Our initial discussion of typographic syntax addresses the intrinsic character of
the individual letter. This well-drawn form, exhibiting subtlety and precision, is the unit that THE LETTER
distinguishes one family of type from another.

• Word - word has the potential to express an idea , object, or event. Word signs are WORD
independent of the things they represent, yet by design they can be made to signify and
reveal their meaning.

• Line - Words are joined to form verbal sentences and typographic lines. Lines of type can

be arranged symmetrically , or asymmetrically . The placement of punctuation marks is of

special significance to these alignments. The orientation of lines raises a multiplicity of

other spacing concerns; for example, inter word spacing, interline spacing, and line-to-

page relationships, as well as the establishment of columns and margins. LINE

• Column and margin –the proportion of column height to width, texture, and tone. It is
through the manipulation of these contrasting variables that pages are spatially
activated, optically balanced, and hierarchically ordered. Additionally, the height and
width of columns should be carefully examined to ensure adequate legibility

D. Identify typographic space

1.positive form and void

This field consists of positive form(the typographic elements) and void (the spatial
ground) upon which the elements are arranged. Unity within the space is
achieved by visual compensation; that is, the spatial balance and arrangement
of typographic elements.

2. visual hierarchy

It tells people where to look and what things on the screen or printed page are most important.

3. ABA form
Typographic designers can achieve a structural
engagement by applying ABA form. The form constructs
a relationship by the repetition of an initiated statement
and contrast to the statement. Viewers see the contrast
as a whole, and the whole is created by the similar
pattern of repetition in terms of visual perception. A key
assumption of ABA form suggests that people
productively establish contrast and recurrences to
recognize a group or fate as visual relationship and
system.

4. The typographic grid system
A grid is a system of horizontal and vertical lines that can
guide layout choices. Grids are helpful when they
encourage consistency. They make it easier to relate
elements on the page.

5. The typographic message
Messages that clearly communicate and are etched
into the mind and memory are those characterized
by absolute clarity in form and content.

6. Functions and expressions
Think of it as type that not only says words but also
communicates concepts too, with highly visual
representation

E. Describe typographic hierarchy

• hierarchy is to help keep your ideas organized, so that viewers can always identify
which category of information they are reading.

For example, if someone is reading a brochure for your bakery business but is only interested in cupcakes, you
want to provide them with a quick way of finding that information. Instead of making the viewer read through
blocks of body text, let the viewer quickly find the area of relevant information.
