Learning Target: I can provide a summary of the text that
includes the main ideas and key details, as well as other
important information.
Summary of the article:
The article “World War II and the Holocaust” tells how
Adolf Hitler set out to rule the world. He came into power in
1933 and began to promote persecution of the jews in
Germany. Starting in 1941, Jewish people were shipped to
concentration camps. In these camps over six million people
died. He joined forces with Japan and Italy. When Japan
bombed the U.S on December 7, 1941, the United States
entered the war and fought against the Axis Powers,
Germany and Italy.

Learning Target: I can compare and contrast two or more
characters, settings, or events in a story, drawing on specific
details in the text.
Background of this Story:
In some countries around the world the government is
called a dictatorship. In a dictatorship, one person or a small
group of people have complete control of the country. In many
cases the military enforces the control. If a person does not
follow the rules, they may be arrested, threatened, scared, or
tortured. The citizens of that country are not allowed to talk or
act against the dictatorship. A person can be rewarded if they
tell the dictatorship about other people who are against the
government.

“For centuries, the Star of David was a symbol of Jewish
pride. But during World War II, Nazis used the Star to

How does this picture relate to the chapter?
My Thoughts:
(Can be expressed in bulleted points or paragraph form)
I think this picture relates to the chapter because it’s Annemarie thinks that her
dad is using cigarettes, some things they don't have, as some type of code
meaning, instead of bringing cigarettes to Annemarie’s Uncle, her dad is bringing a
Jewish person, Ellen. I wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Also, it’s
something Copenhagen has been out of for a while now , just like coffee and pink
cupcakes, and that’s how Annemarie noticed the secret language. To sum it up, this
picture relates to the chapter because it symbolizes Annemarie's family bringing
Ellen to her uncle.

Think about what has happened in the
story thus far. Is it ever ok to not tell
the truth? Explain your thinking in
the space below.
I think it is ok to not always tell the truth. Sometimes
the truth can frighten, confuse, or even harm someone.
We have many examples of that in our book. One example
is on page 26, when Uncle Henrik tell Annemarie, “ it is
much easier to be brave if you do not know everything.”
Another Example is on page 91… “ If Mr. Rosen knew he
might be frighted. If Mr. Rosen knew he might be in
danger.” Thesis examples all explain why sometimes it’s ok
to lie.

How does thE man in the red bandanna
relate to Number the stars and particularly
Annemarie in chapter 13?
My Thoughts:
(Can be expressed in bulleted points or paragraph form)
Annemarie is just like the Man in the red Bandana. Anne marie is being
brave just as the Man in the red bandana was. He had to risk his life to go into
the 911 fire to save people, just as Anne marie is risking her life by taking this
package down to Peter. They also both have challenges in their way that will
try to stop them. For the man in the red bandana, the fire was what was in his
way of saving peoples lives. For Annemarie, the soldiers that may, or may not
stop her while trying to deliver the package is what is in the way of her
delivering the packet to Peter. These are just a couple of ways that Annemarie
relates to The Man in the red Bandana.

Afterword
Why does the author include the “Afterword?” Why
is it important to read the afterword, especially in
historical fiction books?
The Afterword is important to include in a
historical fiction book . It includes true facts about
the story and tells you more about the story's
background. On page 143 it includes true facts like the
fact that “King Christian Road his horse from the
palace every morning unguarded”, the story of the
“teenage boy who was asked who King Christian was”
is a true story, and that “in August 1943 the Danes
sank their own entire Navy in Copenhagen Harbor as
the Germans approach to take over the ships for their
own use.” THese true facts makes us understand that
these historical fiction events aren't made up. And
that these tragic things did happen in history.

Number the stars
Book Review
Title: Number the Stars
Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: Historical Fiction
Number the Stars is a book that takes place in 1943
during the Nazi occupation. Annemarie is the main
charecter, along with her family, her friend Ellen and
her family, The Rosens’, and Peter, her almost-brother in
law, who was about to marry her sister Lise before she
passed away.
Annemarie helps her friend Ellen, a jew, by living
with Annemarie’s family and actign like their duaghter
to protect her form the Soilders. But soon, they realize
that more needs to be done to save the Jews of
Denmark. They embark on a journey to Gilleleje, where
her Uncle Henrik lives to help the Resistence and smuggle
Jews across the sea to Sweden.
My favorite part of the book is how you really get to see
charecters react to the situation at hand. The Holocaust is a
very horrific event. And sometimes you see how it really was
through a historical fiction story. A historical Fiction story
about such a tragic topic makes us more aware and
understanding of that situation because you can see the
syuffering through the charecters, compared to a nonfiction
informational peice about it.
I love this book! I would sugest that it is a good read for
5th-8th grade. I think you would l;ove this book if you like
History, Realistic Fiction, or maybe even mystery. I really
enjoyed this book and I hope you will too!
