Introduction My inspiration for this book came from the work of two great writers: Lewis Carroll and Terry Pratchett. The year my family and I moved to Canada was the year I first read Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to my daughter, and we also watched the TV adaptation of Pratchett’s Going Postal. Some time later, we were walking our dog, and I saw a field full of poppies and chamomile, looking so curious and as if smiling in the grass. I clearly envisioned them with fox and white rabbit faces, tiny ears, and colorful petals. And although they didn’t talk like the flowers in Wonderland did, I am sure they winked at me! I wanted to show these creatures of my imagination in fabric, but how? I knew that I wanted to make something small and meaningful. I remembered something from Going Postal: a letter that said, “Sealed with a Kiss.” Why not try to seal a message for someone special with fabric and thread? Postcards are small, and they offer a huge range of opportunities to try something new. How about a project that combines classic appliqué techniques with drawing, feather details, and felting? And final touches made with whimsical stamps and colorful inks? In this book, you will find postcards along with a variety of other projects—from everyday items to decor, keepsakes, and gifts—that allow you to create adorable animal friends with a floral twist. You’ll meet clumsy bears, cunning foxes, sweet bunnies, clever kitties, and more as I share my tips and tricks for mixing numerous creative techniques, such as quilting, bag-making, appliqué, and detail work. I hope you’ll enjoy creating 3D projects with cute creatures as much as I do. Be inspired! Keep creating!
Chamomile Bunnies Sunny bunnies in white and pink replace the usual yellow centers of these chamomile flowers. The flowers look a lot like daisies, so wouldn’t it be fun to play “loves me, loves me not” while sewing? Appliqué the design onto the background fabric according to the appliqué technique on pages 7–8. Use the Appliqué Details guide on page 15 as a pattern for the stems and leaves of this piece. Before creating the flowers, trace the small, medium, and large button bases at the end of the stems where the flower centers (faces) will go. Projects The next section includes just a few exciting project ideas you can create with your new floral animal creations. Enjoy putting these sweet faces on useful items like heartfelt postcards, adorable purses, accessories, and eyeglass cases. The stepby-step instructions will show you how to easily incorporate your animal designs into practical items that will let you bring the floral animal characters’ whimsy and joy to your everyday life.
Macaron Coin Purse We all need a little purse to keep tiny treasures safe—even better if it resembles a delicious French cookie! This design features larger versions of our favorite animal friends, and it incorporates the same appliqué techniques and decorative stitches as you put the pieces together. This cute coin purse is fun to make, so you’ll enjoy creating more than one to keep or give as gifts. The following step-by-step instructions detail how to make the panda purse, but you can use these steps to make any of the animals by substituting the fabric color and making the face in the same way as previously shown (see instructions on pages 14–33 and templates on pages 88–90), using a metal lid instead of a button as the base.
