WEAK BASE ANION RESIN WITH LOW
STRONG BASE CAPACITY

OBJECTIVE

Macroporous WBA resin holds high importance amongst commercially
available anion exchange resins due to its versatile performance. It is
essential to have controlled strong base capacity (SBC) in weak base anion
with respect to its specificity to dissociate only at acidic pH and its ability
to split salt to minimum level which makes it true weak base anion.

Certain applications in process industry are performed with the WBA & alike resulting in:
• Effective separation of strong acid anion from weak acid anions.
• Selective exchange of acid in presence of neutral salts.
• Better pH control on treated solution avoiding the pH sensitive chemical changes of the

treated effluent.

Thereby, after thorough research and chemistry, Thermax developed the new product “Weak
Base Anion resin with low Strong Base Capacity” to cater the demand in the market with varied
applications of this product. With this new product launch, Thermax can significantly improve the
market presence in the specialty application in geographies across the globe. Other objective for
developing this product was to participate in government tenders of nuclear grade low SBC product.

content of SBC:

PRODUCT APPLICATIONS

Application in Atomic Power Stations
Selective removal of Gadolinium nitrate in presence of boron from moderator
system- Gadolinium nitrate is used as neutron poison in the secondary shut
down system. The gadolinium salts tend to undergo hydrolytic precipitation
in neutral and alkaline conditions. Therefore, due caution should be exercised
in ensuring strict water chemistry control, where the pH of gadolinium solution is
always maintained at < 5.5 with free acidity. This is to prevent any deposition of gadolinium as
gadolinium hydroxide in the core, which can have adverse implications. Here, SAC mixed bed
system is used containing SAC and WBA (low SBC) resin. Mainly to avoid the precipitation of Gd
(NO3)3; ion exchange resin with low strong base capacity is used in these applications.

Application in Liquid Glucose Deashing
In liquid glucose manufacturing process, ion exchange resin has taken a lead role.
WBA resin is used for demineralization and decolorization of liquid syrup. In alkaline
condition, glucose isomerizes to fructose. Also, in alkaline pH hexose degradation,
products form in the syrup which imparts color & odour. To prevent isomerization
in syrup, low SBC weak base anion resin is used widely.

Application in removal of Carboxylic Acids
To remove carboxylic acids (like acetic acid) from brine solution (NaCl), low SBC
weak base anion resin is used where brine concentration shouldn’t get impacted
during exchange. Weak base anion removes only carboxylic acid does not
exchange neutral salts.

Application in FOS
Acidity removal from fructo-oligo-saccharide feed by using low SBC weak base anion
exchange resin. Low SBC resin plays a vital role where valuable material degrades in
alkaline conditions.
Application in removal of Acidity from Dimethyl malonate
Removal of acidity from any aqueous or non-aqueous streams can be easily done using

weak base anion exchange resin having tertiary amine functionality. Low SBC product improves
the operating capacity in these applications.
Some more applications
a) Removal of mineral acids form carboxylic acid such as citric acid.
b) Removal of formic acid from formaldehyde.
c.) Absorption of hydroxy citric acid from garcinia grind.
