EXPLANATORY NOTES

This Finding Aids Book was prepared to facilitate the retrieving and using
records and

archival materials related to the "Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah
ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mu’azzam Shah" which is
Sultanate Of Pahang. Many information can be obtained from both electronic
and non electronic sources. List of available materials are including images,

newspaper, commercials and more.



This Finding Aids Book also aims in helping researches to find more about this
topic. All materials are listed according to the type of collections that

documents the simple inventory and description of the selected materials. The
content of this finding aids are based on the materials that are available in the

National Archives Of Malaysia (NAM).

INTRODUCTION ABOUT
ONLINE FINDING AIDS (OFA)

Finding aids are tools that enable the user in locating information inside a given record group, collection, or series of
archival records. Published and unpublished inventories, container and folder lists, card catalogues, calendars, indexes,
registers, and institutional guides are examples of finding aids. Discovering aids are authoritative documents that assist
users in locating information about a record group, collection, or series of archival resources. In addition, the National
Archives and Records Administration (NARA), together with other federal agencies, publishers, and private organisations
and businesses, can provide finding assistance. The records that have been acquired may function as indices. In addition,
each finding aid contains information regarding the collection's title, the creator of the materials, if known, the dates of
the records, the collection's size, and any access restrictions. In addition, some locating aids include information about
the history or biography of the documents, how they are organised, inventories or contents lists of boxes and folders in a
collection, and a selection of topics covered by the records.

Introduction to OFA is an online website that was conceived in January 2005 and launched in 2011 with four primary
goals: to digitise archival documents, audio-visuals, modernise the data centre, and expand the growth of OFA. One of My
Creative Content's project specifications initiated the formation of OFA (MyCC). In contrast, OFA consists of six primary
activities, the first of which is the development of research abilities. The second objective is to preserve the data integrity
between OFA applications and the Computerized Archival System (COMPASS), Archival Management System (AMS), and
Media Asset Management System (MAMS). The last step is to establish the online reservation of materials, online
payment, and the preservation of digital format. Finally, modifications will be made to the COMPASS and MAMS
applications. After achieving all four goals in 2013, the public will have unrestricted access through the OFA application
to the 3,400,000 pages of digitised archives materials and production as well as the 2,242 hours of digitised audio-visual
archives stored in the data centre. Additionally, NAM has introduced new services that allow customers to reserve
materials in advance via OFA.

INTRODUCTION ABOUT PAHANG DARUL
MAKMUR

The history of the state of Pahang begins before the foundation of the Malay kingdom of Malacca,
which is the territory of the southern portion of the Malay Peninsula and all of which are
included in the kingdom of Pahang. Pahang is the name of the modern-day state of Malaysia.
Pahang was the only name that the ancient Majapahit Javanese used to refer to the Malay
Peninsula. At the beginning of the 16th century AD, which coincides with the beginning of the
Malay Kingdom of Johor, the borders of the State of Pahang Darul Makmur; next to Sedili Besar
and in the north to Terengganu; the border to the west reaches Rembau, Selangor, and Perak; and
the border to the east reaches Kelantan, Kelantan, and Kelantan. Pahang Darul Makmur is a state
in Malaysia that is bounded on three sides by the South China Sea, mountain ranges to the north
and west, and other mountain ranges to the east.

With a total land size of 35,515 km2, Negeri Pahang Darul Makmur is the state in the Malay
Peninsula that takes up the most space. The glory and splendour of his name from days gone by
turned into a power grab for the kingdom that surrounded him. Pahang is currently a state
located in the Peninsular region of Malaysia. It is made up of eleven different districts, including
Kuantan, Pekan, Rompin, Maran, Temerloh, Bentong, Raub, Lipis, Cameron Highlands, and Bera.
Despite the fact that people of different nations and races make up the population.

Pahang has been referred to by different names by ancient travellers. In the past, Pahang was
known by a variety of names by both natives and foreigners. In Chinese records, they say Pahang
as 'Pan-Pan', 'Peng Keng', 'Peng-Feng', 'Pang Hang' or 'Fong-Fong'. In the Khmer language, Pahang
is referred to as timah. Pahang is referred to as "Indera Pura" in the Hikayat Hang Tuah and other
ancient texts, and its capital is Pekan. In the historical annals of ancient travellers, Pahang has
been referred to by a variety of names. Pahang was formerly known as 'Pam', 'Pan', 'Paam', 'Paon',
'Phaan', 'Phang', 'Pahan ', 'Phaun', and 'Pahangh', derived from Arab and European elements.

'pahang' also means 'tin' in the Khmer language. In the past, there were numerous tin mines in
Pahang, particularly around the Tembeling River. Perhaps the name Pahang derives from the
Khmer term.

In traditional Malay writing, Pahang was referred to as Inderapura. In addition, others referred to
him as Zamin Eran. This name was inspired by Juragan Budiman's poem. According to the poem,
Zamin Tauran represents Kelantan, Zamin Ambar represents Terengganu, and Zamin Eran
represents Pahang. However, oral tradition suggests that the name Pahang derives from the name
of a tree, the mahang tree. The aforementioned mahang tree thrives in Kampung Tanah Nyior,
Mukim Pedah, Jerantut. According to legend, a mahang tree grew on the bank of an unnamed
river during the time. The tree developed rapidly into a very massive and tall specimen. There is
no comparable tree in the entire state of Pahang. The large and massive mahang tree was visible
not only to the people surrounding it, but also to the ruler of Pahang, who resided in Pekan at the
time. The mahang tree may also be viewed from the South China Sea, where fishermen and
traders utilise it as a navigational aid.

23.01.1976 Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah is the 5th Sultan of Pahang. Al-Marhum His Majesty His Royal Highness
Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah was enthroned at precisely noon on Friday, October 24, 1930 in Bandar Diraja
Accession Number: 2001/0043663W Pekan's Istana Mangga Tunggal (next to Istana Kuning, Old Town). Al-Marhum is the third son of Al-
Marhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mu'adzam Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abdullah Al-
Mu'tassim Billah with Al-Marhumah Tengku Ampuan Besar Pahang Raja Hajjah Fatimah binti Al-Marhum
Sultan Iskandar Shah.

Paduka Ninda Al-Marhum, His Majesty Sultan Iskandar Shah of Perak, who resides in Kuala Kangsar, Perak,
was responsible for Al-upbringing Marhum's and education. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah began his formal
education at the Malay School in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Al-Marhum, who was only 10 years old at the time,
completed his education at Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar after completing the fourth grade. In 1948, Al-
Marhum travelled to England on the Audre Lebon for a duration of 25 days. In 1950, Al-Marhum resumed
his education at Sussex Private School before enrolling in the Public Administration Course at Worchester
College, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Al-Marhum continued his education from 1951 to 1953 at
University College Exeter, Devon and got practical experience in the Local Government department of
Sidmouth Urban District Council, Devon.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah Ibn Al-Marhum Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Ri'ayatuddin
Al-Mu'adzam Shah has vast military experience. Al-Marhum and 116 others joined the armed services as
Cadet Officer Trainees in Port Dickson for six months of training in 1953, upon their return to Malaysia. Al-
Marhum was one of the 13 learners who were able to successfully finish this rather intense programme. Al-
Marhum formerly held the rank of Captain with the 4th Battalion of the Royal Malay Soldier Regiment
(RAMD) in Tapah, Perak. Al-Marhum was also promoted to the rank of Major while serving as a Temporary
Officer with the Territorial Army.

(FIGURE 15) His Majesty Sultan Abdullah Al-Mu'tasim Billah Ibni Al-Marhum
SULTAN ABDULLAH AL- Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam Shah was crowned on Thursday night,
MUTASIM BILAH IBNI SULTAN 25 Syawal 1296 corresponding to 12 October 1874, at the palace of
his father and mother Cik Su'ma in Old Town . He is the fifth son

death of his uncle, Sultan Mahmud. His Majesty was installed as
Sultan Abdullah Al-Mu'tasim Billah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad

Al-Mu'adzam Shah in May 1919, at Balairung Seri Istana Seri
Terentang, Pekan with full ceremony.

The 3rd Modern Sultan of Pahang

His Majesty Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam Shah appointed his son

Tengku Mahmud as Regent on July 22, 1889 to assist him in state

government affairs. Then, according to the agreement of Sultan

Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam Shah which was confirmed in the State Assembly

on 11 October 1891, Tengku Mahmud was given the title of Tengku

Besar Pahang which is a title for a future Sultan.

TENGKU MAHMUD IBNI He married Tengku Mariam, the daughter of Al-Marhum Sultan Abu
SULTAN AHMAD, SULTAN OF
Bakar (Johor) in July 1913 but left no offspring.
PAHANG His Majesty succeeded his father as the Reigning Sultan on 9 May

1914 and Tengku Mariam was appointed as Tengku Puan Besar. His

Accession Number : Majesty's reign as Sultan was short-lived, when he died on 19 June
2001/0024263W 1917 at Rumah Rehat Kuala Pahang.

The 2nd Modern Sultan of Pahang

His Majesty Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam Shah was born on 23

May 1836 corresponding to 5 Muharram 1252 H, at his father's

palace on Pulau Maulana, Pekan. Sultan Ahmad Al-Mu'adzam

Shah is the fifth son of eleven brothers. He was proclaimed

Sultan on 16 August 1882.

SULTAN AHMAD AL-MU'AZAM 9 May 1914, after reigning for approximately fifty full years
SHAH IBNI BENDAHARA ALI on the throne of the kingdom of Pahang. He died leaving

several wives, sons and daughters, and was buried at the

Royal Tombs in Kampung Marhum, Kuala Pahang on 11 May
