Since March, when the pandemic hit, hundreds of Shaar Cares volunteers have rallied to make calls, deliver meals, shop for groceries and be there to support our most vulnerable members. We worked together as the seasons changed, never wavering, always ready to help. We are so grateful to our faithful and committed team and so proud to be part of this incredible Shaar community. May we continue to go from strength to strength. OVER 6000 MEALS DELIVERED OVER 150 VOLUNTEERS OVER 120 ZOOM PROGRAMS
It is an exciting time for the Shaar. We are approaching the centennial of our sanctuary, to be celebrated in September of 2022. We will soon be building and remaking the daily chapel in the image of our community’s values and prayer needs. We are embarking on a legacy campaign to ensure our community’s stability well into the future. We are growing, developing, planning, and planting. Our awareness, in these moments of growth, is that we’ve been entrusted with a morasha – a legacy of values and community investment that has given us the Shaar of today. Our responsibility to that legacy is two-fold: to fully appreciate our community by partaking in its offerings and to ensure its sustainability for the future. It’s not a simple task, for sure, but it’s one that has been the focus of Jewish communities for generations. Abby, Aviya, Ayelet, Annael, Allegra, and Arella join me in wishing our Shaar family a year of growth, health, and prosperity – Shanah Tovah u’Metukah! JULIUS SUSS 6 Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Lookileadinmembto leais to bThe Hvery experfor cofew mThankbeen ThankvolunLet mhappyIt looks like I have been the most invisible president you have ever seen! But Shaar business has kept me quite busy. Typically, the leadership of the congregation meet monthly, but June and July saw the officers meet (digitally) six to seven times. I would like to thank the members of the officers’ team for giving their time to nearly weekly Zoom meetings. We also had numerous meetings with past presidents. I would like to thank the past presidents for contributing their deep perspective of Shaar history and outlook. I would also like to thank the entire Board of Trustees for their participation and guidance during this unprecedented time. The issues that brought about these meetings had to do with urgent topics, many due to COVID-19. Other topics were related to the coming year, as well as the long term future of the Shaar. We will soon unveil the architectural renderings of the proposed renovations for the Shaar. This is the second phase of renovations funded by the Shaar Family Capital Campaign. In “Who by fire?” Leonard Cohen offers an absurdist take on the list of fates that the Machzor postulates might befall any of us in a calendar year. “Who in your merry, merry month of May? Who by very slow decay?” and the list goes on. Then, in his refrain, Cohen asks “And who shall I say is calling?” A scenario which had clarity – that God is calling – is clear no longer. The last months have shown us that what we thought to be clear and dependable was not necessarily so. Nevertheless, we prepare to welcome 5781 with the familiar formula: honey, shofar, prayer, fasting, and hopefully an inscription in the Book of Life. That’s a call that I think we are all ready to answer! שנה טובה, מתוקה, ובריאה! A good, sweet and healthy year to us all! Through new channels and innovations using social media, the Shaar has been reinvented to be able to stay connected with the community. To belong is an integral part of human existence and sometimes we only realize how important a particular thing is when it is taken away from us. The theme of all the holidays celebrated at this time revolve around community and belonging. Celebrating with others is about being part of something bigger than just ourselves, and how our actions affect those around us. In this trying time we must all, more than ever, stand resolute and united together. This is a period in our lives that we will not soon forget. How do you want to remember it? We want to ensure that regardless of the circumstances, we will persevere and get through this all while preserving our heritage and rituals. May God inscribe us all a healthy and happy New Year. A year in which we can resume regular activities A year in which distancing becomes a thing of the past. A year in which interaction can take place face-to-face. A year in which we can conduct ourselves with the confidence of health and security. From Brigitte, Raphael, Nathaniel, and myself, we wish you all a Shanah Tovah Um’etukah and a G’mar Tov. These past months have been difficult, but they have also been a creative and energizing time at the Shaar. As we have lost our usual means of being together, we have discovered new and innovative ways of operating as a community. Families have enjoyed picking up a Shaar Challah Kit; Foundation School children have gathered for activities in the park; teens played online Jewpardy with NCSY; parents gathered for cocktails over Zoom. The coming new year is packed with new ideas as well. Netivot is poised to launch a hybrid model, utilizing at-home exploration kits to accompany weekly Zoom lessons. Our High Holy Day Family Box will help parents engage with their children during Rosh Hashanah. On Sukkot, the congregation will be invited to attend an online Edible Sukkah Expo, to see what children might create in their own kitchens. So much has changed, but our values and connection as a community have remained constant. We have begun to truly envision what the Shaar of the future might look like. I pray that even as we come through this difficult time, we will continue to grow as a community. May all those suffering find comfort and healing. And may we greet the new year with creativity, optimism and a renewed sense of purpose. From my family to yours, Shanah Tovah!
