Pride was the order of the day in a room that often challenges our
ability as Jews to feel it. We were proud to represent the Jewish
community; Montreal's community; The Shaar family; the many
millions who perished in the Shoah. So many layers of deep meaning
were present in that room.
When Haim Roet, a survivor from Holland, spoke immediately before
the choir and I were to say Keil Malei Rachamim, the Memorial
Prayer, it became clear that my greatest challenge would be keeping
my composure. Mr. Roet's accent was that of my late Opa, his story
of survival was the same as my great aunts and uncles, and his family
members who were not fortunate enough to survive went through
Westerbork, the same Dutch transit camp that transported more than
50 members of my mother's family to their deaths. His story pushed
me over the edge and when I ascended the podium and asked those
assembled to rise and saw him standing in the front row, I could no

PRE-SCHOOL Sherry Smith, Director of Garderie Foundation School

In pre-school we have a motto: ‘Sharing is Caring’. One of the life lessons
we impart to our Foundation School children is that sharing and caring can
extend beyond the doors of our school and its classrooms.
On a dreary February morning, our children had the opportunity to do one of
the things they like to do best, come to school in their PJs, but this time for an
important cause. The result was our first ‘Wear a Pyjama/Give a Pyjama Day’ in
support of Auberge Shalom, a local women’s shelter whose supplies needed
replenishing. Special thanks to their representative, Joanna Kolb, for getting
the ball rolling.
The event was an overwhelming success on so many levels. With the ‘beyond
the call’ support of their parents, rain-soaked and pyjama clad, the children not
only filled box after box with donations of pyjamas, socks and underwear but
also participated in a life lesson so fundamental to our school – the importance
of mitzvot, acts of chesed and giving back to the community.
We kept warm and cozy on a cold February morning knowing we would warm
the hearts of others.

SISTERHOOD Marjorie Kirsch-Heft and Sheryl Shuchat, Sisterhood Co-Presidents
