Message from our Membership Committee
by Dr. Sam Malkinson

Years ago, when I was in dental school at McGill University, I got into an argument one day with one of my medical school colleagues, a young man
named PC. PC had grown up in an evangelical Christian home, and his father was a missionary. After eight months of having known me, he felt
sufficiently confident to proselytize to me. Being a self-respecting Jew, I was full of righteous indignation at what I viewed to be his presumptuous
notion that I was in need of saving. After all, didn’t my religion pre-date his by a few thousand years? Why did he think my religious and spiritual needs
were any of his business?

PC smiled at me, having heard my clichéd arguments many times before. He calmly asked me to consider things from his perspective. “What if one
had been given a present, and this present was one which made anyone who had it unbelievably powerful, and at the same time bursting with infinite
happiness and love? Would that be a worthwhile present to have?” I replied yes, of course. “Do you care about the people around you, your friends and
family?” Again, I replied yes. “Well,” he said, “I believe I have been given such a present. And because of how much I care about my friends and family,
and everyone else around me, I can’t NOT share this present with them. It’s my ultimate expression of love, to offer them this wonderful gift which has
been offered to me.”

When the call came from one of the co-chairs of the Shaar’s Membership Committee, to see if I was interested in participating, I reflected on this
conversation. Our mandate is quite broad, with responsibilities both to making our existing members happy, and to attracting and retaining new
members. A fourth-generation Shaar member myself, I have been fiercely loyal and dedicated to our shul since my days at the Foundation School,
through to my becoming bar mitzvah and my teen youth group activities, through to my twelve years and counting singing with the Parallel Service
choir on the High Holy Days, through to the recent Young Professionals group’s activities, and finally culminating in our daughter’s recent Hebrew-
naming ceremony on our beautiful Main Sanctuary bimah. Along the way, I have been witness to concerts galore, fun and educational programming
for all ages, rabbis who have become spiritual, educational and political leaders for our community and beyond, a very strong dedication to charity, the
ordination of not one, but two Maharats, a cantor and choir who have become trans-national ambassadors of musical goodwill, and so much more.
The highlight of my first year with the Membership Committee was our New Members Shabbat Dinner, where, in an overwhelming show of support,
existing members and new members came together to welcome and be welcomed. When I think of everything that Congregation Shaar Hashomayim
has to offer, it makes me think of that long-ago conversation with PC, and I ask myself, ‘How can I NOT share this wonderful gift with everyone?’

CONGREGATION SHAAR HASHOMAYIM THIS IS WHERE WE COME
450 KENSINGTON AVENUE
WESTMOUNT, QUEBEC This is where we come ...
H3Y 3A2 To pray and to reflect.
To get married and to celebrate,
To seek support in times of sadness and loss,
To honour our parents and to bless our children,
To be spiritual and also to be human.
This is where we come ...
To mark the holiest of days and to rejoice in Shabbat,
To study and to understand; to teach and to learn.
To show our eternal support for Israel and to stand with our community,
To embrace our Jewish identity, and to discover ourselves.
This is where we come ...
To connect and to unplug; to sing and to listen,
To be together or alone with our thoughts,
To welcome new traditions and to uphold ancient ones,
To be inspired and, in turn, to inspire,
To make the world a better place, for now and forever.

THIS IS WHERE WE COME.
THIS IS WHO WE ARE.
