HELPING THOSE IN NEED AT PASSOVER
MAOT CHITTIN

Dear Friends,

I invite you to participate in one of our tradition’s wonderful opportunities to
help others. A number of times on the Jewish calendar our tradition calls upon us
to offer support and help to those in financial need. I am reminded time and time
again of this need, as individuals and organizations approach our synagogue for
support. The complex life stories, the unfortunate turns in mazal, and the need
for legitimate Jewish chesed are parts of the everyday experiences of many in
our community.

In this vein, please consider donating to the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim
Passover Fund. With your participation, we are able to help many in our own
community experience Passover in a way that provides the warmth, the spirit,
and the fulfillment that every Jew deserves, regardless of their financial standing.
Best wishes for a chag kasher v’samei'ach.

Sincerely, Cheques payable to Congregation Shaar

ANNOUNCING NEW
HIGH HOLY DAY MACHZORIM

This coming High Holy Days will mark the first time in our 170 years that all the members of our community will
be on the same page — literally! On Rosh Hashanah 5778, we will begin using our very own, personalized, one
volume, Shaar Hashomayim edition of the Koren Sacks High Holy Day Machzor.

Going forward, our Congregation will no longer hear the refrain of “Adler, Birnbaum and Artscroll.” The text
corresponds exactly to the words that the Cantor and Choir sing — no more skipping pages. Thy, thou and thus
will be replaced by the majestic English translation and commentary of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. The Hebrew
typeset is crisp and clear, and phonetic transliteration will help those less familiar with the Hebrew to join in
some of the refrains.

This innovation fulfills one of the goals that we set for the 170th anniversary: to enhance your connection to the
services on the holiest days of the year. We look forward to unveiling these stunning new machzorim at a pre-
High Holy Day Machzor launch event.

More information on how you can purchase your copy will follow shortly.

SISTERHOOD

Co-Presidents: Marjorie Kirsch-Heft and Sheryl Shuchat

Our mandate in running the Sisterhood of the Shaar will be coming to a close within the next four months. It has been a
meaningful and welcome opportunity to create our own vision of sisterhood and in doing so, to network with the generous
and perspicacious women of the Shaar. We appreciate the clergy and support staff who have encouraged and guided us.

There is a numerical connection between the approaching holiday of Purim and our matriarch Sarah. Sarah was the only
woman in the bible whose name was changed by God and she became the mother of our nation. Sarah lived to be 127 years
of age. Queen Esther, the brave heroine of the Megillah, eventually ruled over 127 provinces. These women exemplify the
principles of dedication, and influence. They inspire our Shaar Sisterhood to cultivate friendships and connections, and to
take on leadership roles for the betterment of the individual, the Shaar congregation and the community at large.

A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDATION SCHOOL

True to our "Vision and Mission," the sense of community has never been stronger at Foundation School. As a Director, I am buoyed, daily, by observing

the children, some as young as two years old, helping a friend, sharing a snack or hugging a classmate. The development of this feeling of comradery,

of helping and encouraging each other, is something quite remarkable. It is almost familial – brothers and sisters in a micro community – all for one

and one for all. We certainly have our priorities in the right place! How do the children learn this? Watching the adults that take care of them. It is the

hallmark of Foundation School that we are truly a cooperative and committed community of teachers and parents working together to make this a

place where every child thrives. Sherry Smith, Director, Foundation School
