This Columbus suburb wants to become a family-friendly tourist
destination. Here's why its new tourism chief thinks it can
Jan 14, 2020, 2:25pm EST
Hilliard is stepping up its efforts to bill itself as Central Ohio's top family-friendly tourist
destination.
Tim Kauffman, director of Destination Hilliard, the city's convention and visitors bureau,
says the city is due to experience significant momentum in 2020 that could help boost
its already-growing bed-tax revenue and lead to more visitor spending.
Among the developments: There are two hotels set to open in early 2020, a 94-room DESTINATION HILLIARD
Towneplace Suites by Marriott and 84-room Avid hotel. A "mini North Market" project
dubbed Center Street Market in Old Hilliard is due to open early in the year. And an Destination Hilliard, the convention and visitors

"We're trying to raise the awareness of Hilliard and we're starting to feel some impact," Kauffman said. "Our vision is to raise
the awareness and bring new folks into Hilliard to spend their almighty dollar here."
In particular, Kauffman said many of Hilliard's events appeal to the whole family, a key demographic advantage as the city
looks to grow its tourism business.
Hilliard is already seeing some growth when it comes to bed-tax revenue, a chief measure of any Ohio city's tourism scene.
The city collected more than $426,000 in 2019, according to city spokesman David Ball, an approximately 3% increase over
2018. Bed-tax revenues in Hilliard are up significantly since 2015, when they were about $300,000.
Kauffman said the city is hoping for a jump in bed-tax revenue as a result of the new hotels coming online, although Ball said
the amount of bed-tax revenue set to be generated by those new hotels is still uncertain. But he pointed to other benefits of
the hotels coming online.
"In addition to the direct lodging tax, income tax, and property tax revenues a new hotel produces, there are indirect boosts
to the local economy," Ball told Columbus Business First in an email. "Folks staying in a Hilliard hotel are more likely to eat at a
Hilliard restaurant, shop at a Hilliard store and buy gas as a Hilliard station. All of that money boosts the local economy and
supports local jobs."
The city is also trying to do a better job marketing itself.
Kauffman, who operates the Destination Hilliard organization as a self-described "one-man band," joined the organization a
little more than a year ago.
Since then, Destination Hilliard has overhauled its website, launched a new logo, refreshed its visitor's guide and invested in
better imagery to market the city.
On the old website, Kauffman said, well-known Cuban fusion restaurant Starliner Diner had the same amount of real estate as
the McDonald's in Hilliard. That has been changed, he said, to play up the local attraction, since it draws visitors to the
community.
"My job is to sell Hilliard," Kauffman said. "That was a big a-ha moment. We want to promote our best (assets)."

Now, Kauffman is embarking on "better packaging Hilliard" as a tourist destination. He wants to create itineraries for different
communities who may come to Hilliard, such as families or business professionals.
Also, Destination Hilliard, which is funded by bed-tax revenues, has invested in visitor-spending research to be able to better
quantify the impact of its efforts.
Kauffman is also producing testimonial videos with the theme of #WhyHilliard in order to better tell the city's story.
"We'll have local folks talk about why they love it here," Kauffman said. "What would you tell someone from Cleveland about
why they should want to visit Hilliard?"
Ultimately, Kauffman said boosting the city's reputation as a great place to live is a key part of the message for why more
people should come visit.
"You can't draw visitors here if your locals aren't really jazzed to live here," Kauffman said. "This is a great community to live in,
play in and work in. That's why it's an important community to visit."
