NZ Breakers Coaching Workshop Trident Basketball had a great
opportunity this year thanks to
Tauranga Basketball and the NZ
Breakers. We were fortunate to
have a coaching session with the
NZ Breakers Head Coach Dan
Shamir and General Manager
Simon Edwards. The drills were
effective in improving technique
and skills and also showed the
importance of always being true
to fundamental basketball play
before the ‘flash stuff’. There was
a lot to take in but all things that
will be beneficial for players as
well having fun along the way.

The Trident Golf team competed in the Eagles Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Stableford golf competition this
year at the Te Puke Golf Course. Led by Carson Van Asselt, Harry Jones and Harry Sheaff played well in fine
conditions and were placed second overall in the team event. Harry Jones was 2nd in overall Stableford points and
Carson Van Asselt was 2nd in overall Gross. The Eagles Society have hosted the event alongside Mike
Campbell from Bay of Plenty Golf. A special mention as well for the continuing success and dedication shown to
the game by Carson Van Asselt who has been selected for and is playing in the Bay Plenty Junior
development squad. Carson is a great asset to the team and we all hope to be able to play more golf in 2021.

Three years ago Mr Marrow offered the opportunity to be a part of the North
America Rugby tour group. A very keen group of boys, not all rugby players,
took up this awesome opportunity and worked hard over the next three years
to raise just over $80,000.
We left for the trip on the 27th of November and flew to Vancouver, Canada.
We were hosted by Yale High School where we stayed for four nights. We
played a game and won against Yale. While in Canada we went up Grouse
Mountain and experienced a First Nations Fest House.
We went to a pep rally which was pretty cool. We did a Haka to their whole
school, which was pretty trippy. They went nuts at the end!
We then travelled in a charter bus to Seattle. In Seattle we were hosted for
four nights by Liberty Rugby club and then four nights with Kent Rugby Club.
They don’t play rugby in schools in Seattle so we were hosted by community
clubs. It was cool being hosted by these clubs because Trident has a long
history with them both. The game we played with Liberty was almost 30 years
to the day that we first played them in 1989. We have been playing Kent in
rugby since 1994.
While in Seattle we did lots of sightseeing. We went to the famous Pike Place
Market, went up the Space Needle, went to the Museum of Pop Culture. We
went to the Boeing factory where they make the Boeing 777, 747 and the 787
Aircraft. It was amazing. The factory is the largest building in the world.
From Seattle we flew to Denver in Colorado. It was really cold in Denver. We
did a bit of shopping, visited the famous Red Rocks concert venue, went to
Boulder, and visited the Google Headquarters, which was an amazing building
and a very cool place to work. We went to watch a NHL Hockey game at the
Pepsi Centre which was pretty cool. We did some shopping at the outlet
malls. We played and won a game of rugby against a Colorado representative
side.
After three days in Denver we drove up to Summit County. While we were
there a huge snow storm came through, which was pretty cool. We went
skiing and snowmobiling at Copper Mountain. We also hung out in the snow.
After five days in Summit County we flew to LA. We arrived and went straight
to the Staples Centre and saw a basketball game between the LA Clippers and
the Phoenix Suns. The stadium was huge. While in LA we had a day at
Disneyland, a day a Universal Studios, and a day at Knotts Berry Farm.
On the last day we did a last bit of shopping, went to Hollywood Boulevard
and the LA Farmers Market.
We would like to give a huge thanks to Chris Burn who organised all the
fundraising and the tour itself. A huge thanks also to Ms Elliott who has done
a lot for all of us boys and a lot for the school. Finally a big thanks to Mr
Moore and the parents who came along.
A special thanks also to Tony and Tracey Marrow who did a lot or work
behind the scenes organising many aspects of the trip and giving up huge
amounts of time with the fundraising.

2020 would be a season to remember for Trident High School. It started off with all our Trident rugby teams learning Te Haka Taparahi O
Taoroa as a way to build a strong team culture but also to challenge and show respect to the opposition.
This year Trident had four teams; U14, U15, 2nd and 1st XV. We welcomed new coaches Eddie Sykes, Te Oranga Headifen, Toko Waaka,
Brent Jones and Gareth Vlotman.
With Covid lockdowns, changes of levels and restriction really highlighted how important sport can be for a community. Rugby was a way
to connect communities again, and to appreciate being able to watch and support sport. For our teams, rugby will always be about
playing with your mates and having fun.
Pre-season for all teams was shorter with only two games before our competition started. Trident 1st XV were fortunate to play Gisborne
Boys which we hope will become an annual event.
The U14’s had some great talent with Joseph Bateson, Campbell Henderson and Kereti Mauriri shining each week. Trident U14s had a
mixed bag of results, playing in the 2nd division, no matter the points difference these young men never gave up, worked hard together
and represented our school with pride.
New Rugby coach Mr Vlotman helped with the U15s. Playing in the Premier grade, this team missed five key players who had been
selected into the 1st XV. But that didn’t stop the boys going out there and giving it their all. Alex Whittle, Jack Clark and Harley Turner
had a great season. Manaaki Mokai was a weekly barnstorming runner. The late inclusion of talented brothers Legacy and Breiton
Tuwairua allowed them to show their class each game.
Our 2nd XV had a very successful year winning the 1st XV 3rd Division. Tough games against Opotiki College and Tarawera High School
were fantastic to watch. Highlights were watching Kazsdy-Toa Wera-Cook and Whare Whakamoe-Williams running the length of the
field, beating a number of defenders to score a multitude of tries. Those tries wouldn’t happen with the power and hard work from Hira
Te Are, Riley Hati, Tamati Ru Takao and Tamati Barr. Thanks to Toko, Donna and Jason who coached, managed, fed and supported this
group of boys.
Throughout the year there were a number of Rugby boys who helped in the community by refereeing local Rippa Rugby competitions
and 7s tournaments while also supporting local junior teams. It’s pleasing to see so many young men give back to our community.
Again Trident 1st XV had another successful year. With only four players from last year's championship team, Trident had a youthful
squad for 2020 who experienced big wins against Western Heights, John Paul College, Mt Maunganui and Rotorua Boys. This set the
team up nicely for a close win in the semi final against a combined team of Aquinas College and Te Wharekura O Mauao. Third year
players Chicane Paniora and Ethan Wharewera had been outstanding all year with their best Rugby to come. Te Iwikino Kepa led the side
with future leader Simon Prout having a great year.
The 2020 secondary school final was against Kaktikai who led 19-10 at half time before Trident took the lead 21-19. From that point it
was tit for tat before Katikati scored well over regulation time to take the win 34-32. While this was not the way we wanted to finish the
year, the coaching staff were proud of what we had achieved. With only a handful of players leaving this year, the future looks bright for
Rugby at Trident High School.
A big thank you to; Kelly, Nicky and Cian Hart, Kerry and Brenda Looney, and Koona Wharewera for the support shown to our teams.
Thanks also go to this year's 1st XV coaching team; Brett Wharewera, Beau Gibson, Jason Tuhoro, Jason Amoroa and Sylvia Wharewera.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Trident U15
rugby 7s girls team that had travelled
over to Paengaroa to compete in the
Baywide rugby 7s tournament. With
strong defence and amazing attacking,
our Trident girls came out with a win,
making them the top U15s 7s Girls team
in the whole of Bay Of Plenty! With only
one sub, awesome skills were still
displayed and lots of tries were scored by
all players of the team. What a very
proud moment. Hinemaringi Scott, the
captain of the U18s had travelled over to
help coach the girls to victory. She had
helped them during their games and
passed on her knowledge and experience
throughout the day. Awesome skills were
still displayed by Matua Jimmy and Tiwai
who helped and supported the team to
success. A wonderful job team.
In the term three holidays we had a number of Trident students go over to Rotorua
and compete in a New Zealand Maori Rugby League tournament. Congratulations to
Nivaloh Elliott and Tawharautia McGarvey who were selected in the U15s New Zealand
Maori Rugby League tournament team along with their team who won the U15s Girls
Tournament. Congratulations also go to Hinemaringi Scott for being selected in the
U17s New Zealand Maori Rugby League Tournament team. What great achievements!

Trident Senior Boys Football enjoyed another successful year in the 2020 Baywide Youth Football League.
Pre-Season started in December as the boys prepared to go one better after narrowly missing out on the league title the previous
season. Once back at school, the squad headed off for a pre-season trip to Palmerston North and Wellington where the boys faced
Palmerston North Boys High School and Wellington FC, a mens’ team where two former Trident students, Michael Bell and Hamish
McGregor, play.
The tour was a huge success and the boys were primed and ready for the upcoming season but then the whole world ground to a halt as
Covid 19 struck and the team joined the rest of the country into lock down. Finally the restrictions eased and the boys regrouped to try
and pick up where they left off and began a ‘second pre-season’. When the season finally kicked off….Trident hit the ground running!
The boys were organised, hard working and focused and met every challenge they faced putting in some magnificent performances.
The team won the league undefeated with a game to spare having scored the most goals and conceding the least goals of any team in
the league. The focus after lockdown was to never use Covid as an excuse and the boys did this to the letter.
After some doubt whether Tournament Week would go ahead, the team were finally invited to a tournament hosted by Lindisfarne
College in Hastings. Placed in a tough group, the team had a challenging start but grew in confidence with some fantastic performances
as the week went on. The team finished 9th overall beating Horowhenua and Whakatane High School in their final two games. Overall,
an extremely successful season was achieved through grit and tenacity. The ‘non negotiables’ of showing discipline and commitment at
all times meant the boys were able to stay together, stay focused and to reap the reward of tenacity when it finally arrived after a long
and unpredictable season.
The Senior Boys 2020 Squad was: Ben White, Leon Hundermer, Aidan Wilson, Alex McDonald, Ben Moir, Reuben Barr, Brad Rothwell,
Caleb Nelson, Llew Waugh, Caleb Bateson, Lars Voysey, Markus Edhouse, Mitchell Green, Josh Mitchell, Josh Barry, Jaden Barry, Harry
Jones, Brandon Hope, Quinn McNabb, Liam Kennedy, Caleb Lawrie, Matt Wilson.

Trident Junior Boys Football showed
their potential this year after they
qualified and competed in the
Western Bay of Plenty 14/15th Grade
Division 1. With 24 teams and three
divisions available, the boys tested
themselves by going up against the
best players of their age group in
division 1 and did themselves and the
school proud with a top 4 finish.
It was a tough start to the season due
to Covid with many delays and
cancellations not helping with the
preparation. The lads enjoyed a
pre-season weekend away to Taupo
where we worked on team building
and camaraderie and then moved
into a qualification round to see what
division we could compete in when
the league got underway. Our first
two matches were up against the eventual winners and runners up, Omokoroa All Stars and Otumoetai. Trident competed well and
were in these matches right up until the end but couldn’t close the games out. We then played the eventual third place getters Katikati
and drew nil all but felt we should have taken a win in that game. This result then led to a great run to finish the season on a high with
some great wins and stand out performances from individual players.
We placed 4th, but felt we should have got third… and more importantly, we believed we could have even won the league. Throughout
the season the boys showed great discipline and commitment at all times. We came across some good teams and great individual
players and proved that hard work will always beat talent, when talent doesn’t work hard. We learnt to believe in ourselves and show
the desire and pride that is needed to get results.
Looking back on the season, the lads
will always remember how bitterly
cold Lake Taupo can get…especially
on a typical freezing Taupo day and
in howling winds. We will also hold
our heads up high and remember the
good times we had both on and off
the field and look forward to many
more.
The Junior Boys 2020 Squad was –
Elijah Wetting-Davidson, Jake Finlay,
Jan Hundermer, Ned Steane, Hayden
Stewart, Levi McIntyre, Leutian
Horn-Christensen, Sam Cornwell,
Tyrhys Tewake, Bryn Evans, Kayan
McCoubrie, George Blackburn, Ollie
Fort, Ben Hipkiss and Connor
Norman.

Another great year for Girls Football at Trident High School, despite the setbacks from COVID-19.
Three teams played for the School, our 1st XI Girls in the WBOP Baywide Youth Premier Girls Competition and both of our
2nd Xl (white & blue) in the WBOP league.
We had 50 girls registered to play for the school, which bodes for keeping girls in the game in future seasons.
The season ran smoothly, largely thanks to those involved in the coaching and managing of the team. Below is a brief
outline of the season.
1st XI Girls Coach & Manager: Alex Howe
The Girls played 10 games in the WBOP competition where we won 5, and lost 5. We scored 25 goals throughout the
league with Brianna Collier-Wilson being our top goal scorer with 10 goals, followed closely by Kaelee Doherty-Meharry
with 7 goals.
Unfortunately we did not have a tournament to prepare for this year but we did travel to Napier to play against Napier
Girls High School and Taradale High School. We came back with 1 win against Taradale and a loss against Napier Girls,
which was a very close game. We also were lucky enough to take away a few of our up and coming players from the 2nd Xl
White team. These players were Bonnie Harris-Reader, Alison Ellife and Ayla Rowe, who all stepped up to the plate and
played some awesome football.
Sadly, we will lose two of our girls as they come to the end of their school days. Jasmine Westrupp who was our Captain
and Francesca Kay who was our Co-Captain. Both of these girls have given a lot of time to football over the years at
Tridents’ and will be greatly missed by our team and we wish them well for the future. Our parent supporters were
outstanding again this year helping out with transport, especially Gail and Steve (Brianna’s parents) who didn’t miss a
game and who stood in as Manager when Alex was away along with Chris Power (Neve’s dad) who refereed our home
games. A huge thank you also to Coach / Manager Alex Howe who played for the 1st XI team from 2008 to 2012 and who
has coached the girls for the past two seasons. Unfortunately it will be her last season as coach but the girls will still see
her at games as she’ll be involved in one way or another.

Trident Blue ladies 2nd XI football team had a tough season in the Baywide Youth 2020 competition. This senior team demonstrated
quality character attributes with skilled individual players that saw the inter-connection of team players. This group of ladies developed
their experience and created many memorable moments with exceptional performances in scoring goals and defensive plays. Our goal
keeper, Summer Aholahi, was the biggest heart of the team, displaying a never give up attitude and continued to commit 100% to each
game even when things were becoming dire. Our skipper, Ryleah Hayes, contributed to the team as a strong role model advocating
strength and encouragement.
Although the ladies did not have a successful season in terms of the scoreboard, there were other highlights to be had. Our continued
supportive sideline crew, our dependable Dad referee, our wet, sometimes nonexistent training sessions, our freezing cold games,
were all aspects of an unforeseen season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Each and every player in this team showed an amazing
amount of resilience and built a solid foundation of camaraderie. Whilst we sadly say goodbye to our year 13 players, we look forward
to the next competition in 2021 and coming back from defeat better than ever. Adelaide Roper - Coach
Our Trident Girl’s White team had a great season of football this year, playing in the WBOP Baywide Youth, 1st division. Our team
consisted of a large number of talented year 9 footballers, along with a few year 11 girls who have played for the team for a couple of
season’s now. The girls played 8 games throughout the season, and won 4, allowing the girls to move into the top 4 playoffs in round
two. We scored a number of goals across the games, our top goal scorers including Jazmin Stewart, Bonnie Harris-Reader, and
Addi Dodson.
As the season progressed, the team worked from strength to strength. They bonded over goals, successes and even the losses. It seemed
nothing would put a frown on the faces of this bunch of talented, dedicated, and passionate, young footballers. At times, persistence
was much needed, but it was this very attribute that saw our team push right until the end of each game, even in the crippling cold and
freezing downpours of our Taupo match. Even though the girls were defeated, they still walked off the field with smiles on their faces.
Whilst every player deserves recognition, Maria Stoove played an exceptional season. Playing mainly in mid field, Maria’s great under-
standing of the game meant that she could fit into any position and play the game with force. Special recognition must also be paid to
Alison Eliffe. Her fast pace and knowledge of the game saw her save countless goal opportunities in her position as sweeper. Overall, it
was a great season played by all of the girls who have all bought individual strengths to the team. All season long we had a fantastic sup-
port system behind the team and we can’t thank whanau enough for the positive encouragement, support coaching, and sweet treats.
I would also like to say a huge thank you to Michelle Corbett for her huge role in coaching this year.
Morgan Prevette - Coach.

Well done to Nikeal and Coralee who have provided us with wrap up of the outstanding season our net ballers have had this year, we
are proud of them all and know that Trident netball success is going to continue!
Team Make-Up
10 new year 9 development players learned so much, not just about netball but about all aspects of life. Most of the year 9s didn’t
know what it was like to be part of a team unit, but by the end of the season, they had learned the values of the Trident netball
whanau and also learned how to carry themselves into every game, how to show discipline in training and how to clean their kits at
home. Our 9 senior players - Throughout the season we learned what it meant to be good leaders, good learners, good sportspeople,
and good people as well. We were all challenged not only physically but mentally too. We stepped up to take responsibility and to help
out the next generation of Trident netball, in teaching them communication skills.
Local Competition
For our local competition in Whakatane, we mixed our teams to have an even ratio of juniors to seniors in both Prem 1 and Prem 2.
This enabled our seniors to help develop the juniors and it also allowed the juniors to learn from more experienced players. This
formed an unbreakable bond between all players. Both teams were in the final and we were all proud of the efforts the girls put out on
the court. Before every game, we had a 1-hour fitness session ensured we were pushing ourselves and it helped us to work well under
fatigue and pressure.
Tauranga Thursday Open Division
For all of the Tauranga competitions, our senior girls were put as Prem 1. While juniors were Prem 2. This was the first year we made it
into the Top Division of the competition, we played every Thursday. This competition was highly competitive and we played alongside
the likes of Sam Winders, Erena Mikaere, and Haley Saunders (all players were in the Magic Netball Group). We ended the competition
being in the Top 5, which was good for our team as we were the only secondary school that had made it into the top division. During
this competition, we learned so many tactical terms and strategies to beat our oppositions, and we noticed that we had learned and
grown so much by the end of the competition.
Tauranga Friday Competition
Prem 1
This was the 4th year of us winning this competition, it consists of secondary schools all over the Bay of Plenty. It was good to play
people our own age because we got a good measure of how much progress we had made. We also completed a 1-hour fitness session
before these games to replicate what it would be like playing back to back games at tournament.
Prem 2
Our Prem 2 was in the Junior Grade but we noticed that the grade was not challenging enough, so they moved into the Senior second
Division to get harder games. The prem 2 team also completed the fitness with us which was good for them because it challenged
them to lift their game.
NZ Netball Tour
Towards the end of the season, our team went on a New Zealand tour. Our furthest travel was from Whakatane to Picton in the South
Island. Due to Covid most of all of our main tournaments were cancelled and we went on this tour as a way to give back to our seniors
who won’t be with us next year. During this tour, we played teams from Wellington, Palmerston North, Picton, and Marlborough, this
was good as most of the girls hadn’t even heard of most of the places we travelled to, it was an experience of a lifetime as most of our
girls probably won’t have the opportunity to travel to these places again. We’d just like to say a huge thank you to our manager Linda
Redmond who not only organized our whole tour but made sure we had teams to play, food to eat, places to stay, and did so many
things behind the scenes as well. We’d also like to thank Matua Jimmy, Mere Williams, Tania (our umpire), who spent a whole week
away from their families to ensure our tour ran smoothly, without their help we wouldn’t have been able to go on tour, thank you for
all the behind the scenes mahi you guys did for us.
North Island Invitational
(made up of the top 12 NZ teams)
This was our main tournament which made up for UNISS being cancelled. We played the Top 12 teams from all around New Zealand.
Throughout this tournament, our girls played exceptionally well and this lead us to coming 3rd in New Zealand. Despite losing our semi
-final to Epsom girls by 2 we were all so proud of our efforts and performance. Our main goal was to not only make it into the top four
but to put out games we knew would make us and our families proud. This tournament will always be kept in our memories as we
achieved our goals and hit our optimum level of netball. We would lastly like to give a huge thank you to our coaches, Te Ahuru and
Ngarori Waititi, we are so appreciative and grateful to have coaches that are able to teach us so much about netball but also the values
needed to be good people. Without you two we would not have had half the opportunities we were given and we wouldn’t be the
players and people we are today.
Thank You from Nikeal and Coralee

Trident High Netball NZ Tour Update
Our Junior and Senior Premier Netball Teams left Trident to begin their busy seven day tour in August. They headed to Wellington,
Nelson, Palmerston North, Tauranga and arrived back in Whakatane ready for Whakatane Club Netball on the weekend. With games
against Sacred Heart College, Samuel Marsden Collegiate, St Mary's, Palmerston North Girls High School and along with their Thursday
and Friday night competitions games in Tauranga. The Girls had their first game yesterday against Sacred Heart College. They had an
amazing time yesterday at Sacred Heart College they welcomed them with open arms, the scores didn't reflect the games, Sacred Heart
teams fought all the way through with smiles on their faces and our girls did some whakawhanaungatanga with them over afternoon
tea.
Final scores were 40-18 to the Juniors & 81-17 to the Seniors. The girls have been amazing and enjoying their experience so far.
They were really excited to be hosted for a Guided Te Papa tour. Kia Manawa Nui girls!
“On Monday 24th August while our girls were in the capital city of New Zealand, we got the privilege of visiting the Beehive. It was an
extraordinary experience witnessing such a significant building and getting the opportunity to take a photo in front of it. Safety always
comes first so we took precautions and wore our masks and sanitised our hands before getting in and out of the vans.
We also had the opportunity to visit a wonderful museum called Te Papa Tongarewa Museum. It was an amazing experience witnessing
our beautiful cultural history and listening to the different stories from nga iwi that are from this area and how they connect to different
iwi. We learned so many awesome things about our Maori culture, and appreciated every single second we were in that museum. We
then rushed to our netball game and a senior girls played first. We faced Samuel Marsden, and scored 58-15 to us and our junior girls
won 40-30. We then rushed over to our next game against St Mary’s and had a final score of 50-17 to us, where we had a combination
of seniors and juniors playing. After our game we went to the look out named Mt Victoria and got to view the city of Wellington. It was
an amazing experience and we are all so happy to be given this opportunity."

Wow! Heartbreaking, weird, different, shocking and change. This is what Covid-19, the year 2020 brought us.
Kia Ora e te Whanau, he pai ki te kite i a koutou
¡Hola! Bienvenidos todos, gracias por venir a celebrar nuestro año
Welcome everyone, thank you for coming to celebrate our year.
I want to begin by giving a warm welcome to the chairperson of the board, Aunty Moira, the deputy
Mayor Andrew Iles, our quest speaker Melanie Kerr, Associated Professor Vaughn Bidois, and to our new
Principal Mrs Scott-Jones, but most importantly I want to say welcome to all students and honoured guests, it’s
great to have you all with us today.
Also, all the teachers who have worked extremely hard to make it another triumphant year under difficult circumstances, thank you and
welcome. And to all the whanau and friends here today, we thank you for coming to support and celebrate the students’ success.
I am extremely honoured to have represented Trident High School and our community as your Head Girl for 2020.
This is a very emotional day for many of us, but what can I say…
What a year we’ve had! I congratulate you all for your perseverance and resilience while we battled Covid-19 together. And what a battle
that was- but we did it. To the graduating class of 2020 we made it! Good luck to all my year 13 peers wherever you are going,
I know you will all excel with the path you will take.
When I begin reflecting over this year, it’s hard to believe that our time at Trident is coming to an end. For 5 years we have taken on the
challenge to wear the most striking and unbelievable outfits to sports days, participate in senior leadership initiatives and have been
proud to wear the Trident badge with us every day. It has been a privilege to have been part of a fun and enthusiastic group of students.
To my prefect team, you all have made Owen and myself very proud with what we have achieved this year. I also have a few close friends
who kept me grounded and a smile on my face when needed. I would like to say thank you to all the teachers who have inspired and
encouraged me to pursue my passions. Trident's opportunities are endless, and it's all thanks to the teachers and staff who keep us
motivated.
I would especially like to thank Ms Reddish who has worked with the prefect team for the last 3 terms and brought a positive energy
and contributed massively with my leadership journey. There is not enough time for me to personally thank every staff member who has
guided me, but I have to make an exception for Mr Rowland who I can’t thank enough for all your support and encouragement for me to
pursue my leadership journey. And also, a special thanks to Ms Deeley for all your support.
I congratulate those prize winners, who have worked hard and shown us all that extra level of excellence. Like one of Trident's
previous Head Boys, Jack Nelson, once said “Every opportunity is a gift.” I believe this also means if you give it your all and take
whatever opportunities that come your way, you’ll be surprised by the doors that are suddenly open.
I cannot go further without acknowledging our staff- from the groundskeepers who look after our school, to the office-staff who
greet visitors and to coaches and teachers alike.
And to you, Owen, there are no words that express how grateful I am to have worked alongside you. Your bubbly and outgoing
personality has made this year memorable. Thank goodness we share the same study line to write those last-minute speeches.
I know your future holds so much success and excitement and I cannot wait to see in which direction your journey heads.
And to my family, your support means the world to me. If it wasn’t for you constantly supporting me and inspiring me to aim high, I
wouldn’t be standing here today. So, thank you to my Mum and Dad and brother Dylan. And to all of my extended family, especially
those who couldn’t make it today, I am grateful for all your hugs and especially all the laughs, thanks Dad. If I was able to keep it
together, I would have expressed more.
There is one thing life will remind you of constantly, the only constant is change. Nothing stays the same forever, and this year we have
all witnessed change to our lives. So, for us year 13’s a new era has ended but another has started. To the year 12’s, I pass along a
challenge- the school is now in your hands- lead it well, be the best example of a Trident student while implementing our core values.
As Owen and myself hand over our Head Prefect duties to the new 2021 Head Prefects, I can say on behalf of both of us and from the
bottom of our hearts, we are extremely proud of you all and your achievements this year, and hope we have inspired you to seek your
passions and achieve your goals. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to Trident. I am forever grateful to be part of the
Trident Whanau. I wish you all the best of luck with your future endeavours. So, for those of you who are leaving Trident today,
here's a quote to lead you off, from Dr. Seuss.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own.
And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
60 So, for the last time. Kia Manawa Nui.
Kia Ora Koutou. Me mihi ka tika, Nei ra te mihi kia koutou e huihui mai nei
On this special day, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the chairperson of the board Moira Hannah, all
staff, students, parents , family and special guests. I stand here today as Trident High School’s 2020 Head Boy
for the last time. Yes, it was scary, has been challenging and onerous but what a privilege. A privilege to both
experience and to bestow today. Our years at Trident have not just been about learning Newton’s 3rd law of
motion, or why mitochondria are the powerhouse of a cell. It was also about learning who we are, and what
our passions and aspirations are for the future.
Thirteen years ago, my journey started ……learning how to write letters and numbers on dotted lines making
many mistakes along the way. But these mistakes have crafted me into who I am today , someone with
resilience, fortitude and belief. I will be forever thankful to my family and to all the teachers for the encourage-
ment rather than criticism. These experiences have set me up in life and enabled me to cope with change. Perhaps not as academic as
other head boys but with hard work I feel I have thrived, throughout what was some intense CHANGE. See, trust me losing your mum at
age twelve is intense CHANGE. I wanted to reflect on CHANGE as a theme.
Climate change seems inevitable and is of great concern to our generation. There was significant momentum to CHANGE with Greta
Thunberg leading the change at the age 17 can you believe. Someone we should all aspire to. But now after a significant year of change
Covid of course has forced us to all to CHANGE. Our habits, workplaces, routines. The need to consider others and how we interact
more so. Much more so! We have had to stay at home and study. Where our classes had to CHANGE ….From classrooms to
computer screens.
My Dad had to CHANGE …….the Internet plan to cope with the data consumption of three sons’ and MJ who stayed for the lockdown!
Rhys my oldest brother had to CHANGE from one zoom screen to another talking to colleagues all over the country all working from
home. But mistakes also encourage CHANGE and although my handwriting may still look the same as it did in year one I have been able
to discover who I am, what I’m about, and the dreams that lay within me.
Someone once said. “Pretending to be perfect doesn’t make you perfect”. You see most of us have this idea that there is stigma or
shame in admitting our limitations or uncertainty, but we can’t possibly know everything. We all make mistakes and mess up
occasionally and that is fine!” And things will CHANGE anyhow!
The Grease cast had to CHANGE rehearsal to online , but Miss Rob and Mr Garner said this CHANGE was actually for the better, having
nailed the live performance with the least live rehearsals of all shows they'd had put on. I would like to give a special thanks to both
Mrs Robb and Mr Garner for inspiring me to follow my passion of performing , by giving me a platform to do so.
And barely two months ago we had a CHANGE of Principal the first time in over six years. What’s more a CHANGE to a woman Principal
for the first time at Trident. Congratulations, Mrs Scott Jones! Community had to CHANGE for families to stay at home and be a family
again. People said that this CHANGE had been for the better a very healthy change .
Healthy ……No Maccas, KFC or Dominos one thing's for sure, CHANGE to our diets was most definitely for the better until lock down
ended! But ……CHANGE again ………...is pending, a new head girl and head boy.
Out there amongst the senior school are the new head boy and girl that will CHANGE to take on the role just like we did.
There will be a CHANGE of teachers and subjects for you all but be confident that change can be conquered like so many this year.
Again, I stand here today for the last time wondering where CHANGE might be going.
I reflect on the privilege to have led with the trust of all of the prefects and to have shared with Nicole as head girl the responsibility of
being Head boy. Nicole thank you for being ………The batman to my robin, The R2D2 to my C3PO… And finally the fantastic head girl you
are. Nicole you have no need to CHANGE just be as you are, and you will excel at everything and anything you set your mind to.
To our teachers, thank you for so unselfishly sharing you time, talent and knowledge with us. Yes, we know it was your job to do it, but
what you did for us went beyond the call of duty. And to my father triple B , big bad Baz. I thank you , I thank you for the endless
support and sacrifice over the last 18 years. Yes I know we argue , however without you and your wisdom I wouldn't be standing here
today. And CHANGE for all us in year thirteen starting today. Congratulations all of you, well done we’ve all made it to the end of High
School. We have been through a lot together! ………Boring classes, acne, exams and so much more
But best of all; we have all grown up together. I am so proud of the people we have become and the people I know we will go on to
become after today ………when we all go our separate and unique ways. Out into the workforce, onto polytechnic or off to varsity for
the most dramatic CHANGE of all. Foreign surroundings, different people, cultures, attitudes, way of learning and living a total CHANGE
to life, as we know it. But we know now that CHANGE can be conquered, and we will succeed. We all have done it already. It wasn’t
that bad. And as my lovely granddad once said ... if things don’t CHANGE, they would stay as they are!
So, go and embrace CHANGE and succeed with CHANGE!
Thank you everyone for a terrific time at Trident High School.
Kia Manawa Nui. 61

Nau mai haere mai mihi mai ra kia koutou katoa
Welcome special guests to this celebration of Trident’s senior students’ achievements in 2020.
The purpose of the Principal’s address at Senior Prize-Giving is 3-fold:
To offer thanks
To celebrate success
To say farewell.
And my first thanks is to all of you whanau and special guests for coming to share the day, connecting and
building community across the school.
My gratitude also goes to the BOT - whose steady and supportive governance of the school in such a challenging year is so appreciated.
You have navigated Trident through these challenging waters with equilibrium and calm and to the school’s benefit.
Today’s celebration represents the combined effort and commitment of both our students and our staff and I would like to thank all our
support and teaching staff for their tremendous efforts for your success here today.
As students, your talents in leadership, culture, sports and academics are nurtured and fostered by educators and coaches and mentors
who care deeply about your progress and success, so please take this moment, senior students to acknowledge your appreciation to all
of those adults to whom you owe a debt of gratitude for the success you are celebrating today.
Senior Prize Giving is always a special ceremony. It is for most awards, the culmination of a year’s work and for some, five long years of
commitment. Some of you today are awarded for the endurance, persistence and perseverance which you have demonstrated right
from those first tentative days in year nine.
But this year is a particularly noteworthy event because for all of us the challenges have been unprecedented, the struggle for many,
that much harder as we dealt with the impact of a global pandemic. Students, you suddenly lost the comfort and security of working
with and amongst your peers, your teacher became a face on a screen, some interactions on the Google classroom stream, and an
exchange of emails. Your reliance on the support and motivation of those around you had to be replaced by your growing
understanding of your own ability to motivate and manage yourself through your learning. For some of you this was a revelation - you
realised your own independent drive, your ability to get up, set a timetable for the day and work steadily. For others, it was harder to
find the routine, stick to the plan and motivate yourself to continue with your learning in a measured and steady fashion.
So with such significant and unexpected changes to the fundamental way you experienced your education, it is all the more
commendable and impressive, that you are sitting here today celebrating a wealth of successes and looking ahead with purpose and
confidence for the exams and the year ahead. Congratulations to all prize winners whose efforts reflect that extra commitment, that
extraordinary resolve to battle Lockdown and win. And for those of you who may not have won a prize, but put in the effort, and who
have come here today to celebrate the success of others, you should be proud of your generosity of spirit and your understanding of
the importance of community and friendship.
Finally, I want to farewell our wonderful year thirteen cohort and those senior students in year eleven and twelve who will also be
moving to new adventures in 2021. We will miss you. You have been welcomed, shown awhi, loved at Trident. Your escapades, trials
and tribulations, adventures, challenges, successes are all part of the richness of our life at school and when you leave us, you leave a
space in our hearts. We will continue to tell our stories of your time with us, your names will continue to be on our lips and we will
laugh, and shake our heads and marvel at you and what you have left us with.
And you will all, always be welcome back. You are part of Trident whanau and always will be.
So farewell, and go with courage in your hearts - Kia Manawa Nui
