ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLUB YEARBOOK SESSION 2020/2021

Chinese New Year Podcast

by Navin

All of us are affected by the current

COVID-19. However, the impact of the

pandemic and its consequences are felt

differently by every member of the
society. While some try to adapt to

working online, homeschooling their

children and ordering food via Instacart,

others have no choice but to be exposed

to the virus while keeping the society

functioning. Our different social identities

and the social groups we belong to

determine our inclusion within the society

and by extension, our vulnerability to the
pandemic.

On 10th of March 2021, a colorful and

memorable Chinese New Year podcast

was organized in our campus. This event

was held from the 10th to the 19th of

March. This event was conducted via

virtual platform using Google Meet due

to this Covid pandemic yet it still

attracted many students to take part in

this podcast.

98

The podcast commenced with the appearance of various

students from different modules. It started off with a few
welcoming words by the host Helennie and the Vice President

of the English Club Dhanieya Ganeish. The discussion was on
the celebration of the Chinese New Year. A welcome speech

was given by Madam Cheah, our English Club advisor.
Subsequently the podcast members were introduced and Tea

with Helennie started. The students from various modules
spoke about their experience in celebrating Chinese New Year.

Ng Shi Jie from S2AP6 was one of the podcast member who
presented a wonderful talking session. As we all know

celebrating Chinese New year during this pandemic seems
impossible but somehow the Chinese students in the campus
managed to celebrate it in a new way. Shi Jie also shared her

experience celebrating the Lunar New Year in quarantine as
she was a close contact with one of the Covid 19 positive

victims. She also spoke about some fascinating Chinese
cuisine which the listeners have never heard before and this

made them crave for the food. The English Club Advisor,
Madam Cheah praised the entire event. She inspired everyone

with her wise and motivating words. Tee Chel Ly from S1AP5
spoke of alternative ways to prevent ourselves from being a
victim of Covid 19. This was really interesting as her advice on

taking precautions were combined with the Chinese ettiquete.
Everyone complimented the podcast crew. It was followed by a

formal vote of thanks from them and the event concluded.
Indeed it was an enjoyable and successful event.

Short Video Competition
By Navin

During this pandemic, many of us were stressed out because our exams were just around
the corner and due to the pandemic we were not allowed to go back for our mid semester
break. This self-confinement certainly added on to our already escalating anxiety. In order
to make students to feel better and relaxed, the English Language club of KMNS
organised a short video competition from the 5th till the 25th of March. The objective of
this programme was to bring students together to show their video editing skills and to
enhance their creativity through this short video competition. In addition to that, this
competition also aimed to shape students to be more creative and innovative. This
competition’s main theme was ‘Community Service Reminder’ with the hashtag
#mylifeinkmns and the leader of each team submitted their videos via Google form which
was prepared by the committee member. A total of 150 students took part. However, only
125 participants managed to get through the online submission as the fastest group to
submit were the ones who were eligible to be in the competition. The number of
participants was overwhelming and out of all students that joined the competition, only 5
groups were selected and the best group was announced as the winner. The deciding
factors of the winning team were creativity and content. The competition was quite stiff as
almost everyone had the same type of content and when the winners were asked about

their thoughts they said a small change makes a big difference in life. Thee-certificates for
the winners and participants were uploaded online. Credit goes to the organizers for
organizing his competition as it allowed the participants to sharpen their skills and editing
and video making. This competition was also very helpful in helping the students to
release during this hectic time .Everyone admitted that it was quite fun and they enjoyed it.
A few days after the competition a prize giving ceremony was held to congratulate the
winners. Definitely everyone who attended to ceremony had to follow the SOP and the
organizers made sure everyone was wearing face mask and sanitized before entering the
hall It was a short but meaningful. The winners received RM40 and was distributed evenly
among the group members. Our designated photographer took pictures of this event. The
event only took two hours as we were not encouraged to gather for long hours in view of
the current SOP.

First and foremost, we are keen to express our sincerest gratitude to the
ELC for organizing such a meaningful activity as it gave us the opportunity
to unleash our creativity. Honestly, we named this challenge as La Ji
Challenge because La Ji means rubbish in Chinese and the objective of
this video was to test the awareness of KMNS community towards
environmental issues. The dirty scene from this video was actually set up

by five of us as a test for the students to examine their awareness. It’s a
sure fire way to see if a person is responsible or not. Although there were
a few of them who chose to completely ignore the situation, some of them
were still responsible enough to clean the dirty place. According to the
interview of successful challengers, they shared us about their reasons

and views which led them to pick up the rubbish. For example, some of
them mentioned about how it is their shared responsibility to maintain the
cleanliness of the campus. Some of the respondents also cited that
students nowadays were lacking in awareness towards this grave issue.
Therefore, all of us hope that all the students can be more concerned
about our Mother Nature. Without earth, life is impossible.

Insight Into the Pandemic from the Eyes of a

Police Officer

By: Dhanieya Ganeish

1. Compared to before the pandemic and now, is there a big disparity in
your responsibilities as a policeman?

Compared to before, now we have to be on duty and on the lookout night and day
There are rules in place but it’s up to each individual on whether they comply with the
SOP’s in place. We were almost on brink of success of eradicating the spread during the
first PKP but due to the lack of compliance, it became worse. Now the situation is not too

bad but maintaining it that way is a bit difficult (this interview was taken at a time when the
COVID-19 situation was relatively under control).
We are incapable of monitoring everywhere all the time. We are working night and day and
even then it’s impossible to keep track of everyone.
So when there are large gatherings ongoing we go to monitor the crowd to ensure SOP is

being followed even if there are no complaints made to be on the safe side. Sometimes
even the organizers themselves are indifferent to the danger and don’t enforce necessary
measures to keep safe.

2. So I guess the main problem is we have to urge the public to be more
conscious and to take safety measures all the time?
Yes most definitely, we as policemen and doctors and all frontliners constantly do

our part to encourage and remind the public to wear their masks and maintain
social distancing. However, ultimately it is each individual’s decision to be aware of

the precarious situation and do their part in overcoming it.
Everyone already knows that we have to be safe because in the end the one’s who
will suffer the consequences are ourselves

In any case, in this dangerous situation always remember to take care of yourselves and

be careful.

MUET BAND 6

By: Dhanieya Ganeish

Out of everything we ever learn as we grow, language will always be either the easiest or the hardest subject, there
is rarely an in between. When it comes to the sciences, an extent of mugging and memorizing would suffice to
reach a somewhat good understanding but I believe you need to truly immerse yourself in a surrounding that uses
the language you want to learn in every aspect to really master it. The same goes with English, to achieve the
highest fluency, read, speak, listen, write and even breathe English.
Hi, my name is Dhanieya Ganeish and I’m a former
student of Kolej Matrikulasi Negeri Sembilan Session
20/21 and I was a MUET Band 6 achiever. Perhaps as a
first note, let’s start off with the fact I never imagined it
was possible to achieve Band 6 for MUET, at least for
me. I hail from Seremban and I’m the middle child of
three siblings. Both my parents are Form 6 English
teachers and that was probably why English was the
main medium of language in my house while we do
occasionally speak Tamil. Growing up, as I developed
my language skills, whenever I speak, if I were to say
something grammatically wrong, my mum would
immediately correct me. This was so routine and
happened so often especially when I was in primary
school that I never even noticed it or thought it was
strange. Now at the age of 19, the corrections are much Now practice is one thing but you still need to constantly

point and build a solid structure and flow.

Moving on to listening, for this just pay close
attention and go through a few practice runs before
the real test to get a hang of it and grow accustomed
to the format.

Last but certainly not least, we have speaking. Always
proactively try to speak English with your friends
every day even if it’s not smooth or you make
mistakes. If your friends or teachers correct you,
don’t feel embarrassed. Embarrassment is something
only we make ourselves feel and will only ever hold
us back. Note the mistake you’ve made and you’ll
start to improve day by day.

English is not something you can learn overnight,
within a week or a month. It’s a long process to
improve ourselves but it’s never too late to start and
everyone has an equal potential to excel so never feel
discouraged or embarrassed. Keep practising and

Alright I think that’s about all the tips I have to help
you improve your English and prepare for MUET
and the rest is up to you. On a side note, you might
wonder since my parents are English teachers and
I’ve been able to achieve a Band 6, is my ambition to
become an English teacher or lecturer? As it would
turn out, my curiosity for science overpowered my
love for English as I’m an aspiring doctor hoping to
someday be able to become a surgeon. Nevertheless,
wherever you go, language always plays a vital role
and mastering English is equally important to help
me achieve my ambition because a lot of
international research in the field of medicine is in
English.

Finally, here we are, at the end of an arduous yet enjoyable journey. Bringing this
magazine to life was an experience I will never forget nor will I forget the people I met
on the way, the skills I picked up, the accomplishments and the creativity I witnessed
from the students of KMNS. I humbly express my gratitude and appreciation to
everyone who poured their heart and soul into The Chronicle of KMNS.

It is a matter of pleasure for me to given an opportunity to have brought out this
magazine. A great team is like a parachute who can save the entire team from falling
to rock bottom. Thanks to all the committee members and teachers for being that
parachute and helping us get down to earth safely. Words will fall small to express the
appreciation I have for this dream team in completing this masterpiece - a fruit of our
hard work, despite all the challenges we had faced in this pandemic. Always will recall
the memory of your working together fondly. Whoever reading this right now, hope
you enjoy the magazine!

We are very honored to be a part of the team to bring this magazine
to life. We would like to show our appreciation and gratitude to
everyone that took part and worked so hard to complete this
magazine. It is a very memorable experience that we will never forget.

It's an honor to be given this great opportunity to become a part of the English

we've enjoyed creating it.
