While most of local theaters’patrons are from the Chippewa Valley,
events also draw from throughout the region. That makes people
who work in places like the Pablo Center ambassadors for the
community.

Cont. from page 26

In that statement, Anderson has in mind not just local
attendees but those from the five largest metro areas
outside of the area: Duluth, Minn.; Minneapolis-St. Paul;
Madison; Chicago; and Green Bay.

The Chippewa Valley itself comprises 62% of their
audience, and the other 38% comes from those five large
areas — 25% of that from the Twin Cities.

“People remember when we built the building, the idea
was that we would reverse the I-94 corridor,” he said,
“and instead of people from the Chippewa Valley driving
to Minneapolis and spending their hard-earned resources
in the state of Minnesota, they’d spend those dollars here.
What we have seen is individuals who are working in
Minneapolis are spending their hard-earned Minnesota

It also appears that Pablo Center’s goal involves employees
as well as guests enjoying their time at Pablo Center.

“The building is magical,” Anderson said. “For individuals
who want to be engaged in the arts and ensure they’re
part of the legacy, this is the place to be.”

When the Sawyer County Board of Supervisors, on the
suggestion of legal counsel, looked at strengthening its health
care ordinance to applying fines to entities not following
health care orders, business owners in the county expressed
concern over local government intrusion and focused much
of their ire on Julie Lyons, who hadn’t even requested the
change.

More funding, jobs?

During the COVID pandemic, a number of new part-time or
limited term employment (LTE) contact tracers have been
hired to monitor those who might have the virus, but there
has been no similar creation of new full-time positions with
benefits.
Guthman is hoping, like all those in public health, that the
COVID pandemic, which now has resulted in the deaths more
than 440,000 Americans and spending trillions of dollars to
stabilized the economy smacked by shutdowns, will awaken
policy makers to realize the importance of being prepared
and the need to implement good public health policies and
full-time positions.
“I belong to several national organizations that we’re looking
at how do we engage that future workforce?” Guthman said.
“How do we get people interested, but there also has to be
the position that they can get hired and do the good work
that needs to continue because this isn’t going to be our last
pandemic.
“There’s more infectious diseases. The rapid travel that we
have in our society, and climate changes and other things
are going to affect the health of our population. So having
this very significant understanding of the complexities, I’m
hopeful that we will have funding that will support positions
for the newer generations coming in, because we’re going to
need them,” she said.
