Preparation of Soluble Salts
(other than ammonium,
sodium, and potassium
salts)
Preparation of Soluble Salts (other than
ammonium, sodium, and potassium salts)
Three method can be used:
1. The reaction between acid and metal oxide
2. The reaction between acid and metal carbonate
3. The reaction between acid and reactive metal
(e.g Mg, Zn)
Test your understanding…
What substance can be used to prepare
Zinc nitrate?
Reaction Between Acids and Metal Oxide
Steps
1. Dissolve the metal oxide in excess with the acid until metal oxide
no longer dissolve.
2. Stir
3. Filter the mixture
4. Heat the filtrate until crystal starts to appear at the edge of the
solution
5. Cool
6. Filter
7. Rinse will few drops of distilled water
8. Dry with two filter paper
Reaction Between Acid And Metal Oxide
Procedure:
Discussion: Preparation of CuSO4
1 Why is copper(II) oxide, CuO added in excess to the solution?
2. The filtration is done twice in this activity. Explain why.
3. Write a chemical equation for the reaction between nitric acid, HNO3 and
copper(II) oxide, CuO.
4. Is the reaction between sulphuric acid, H2SO4 and copper(II) oxide, CuO also
considered a neutralisation reaction? Give a reason.
Reaction Between Acid And Reactive Metal
Procedure:
Steps
1. React the metal/metal carbonates in excess with the acid until
the no more bubbles can be seen.
2. Stir
3. Filter the mixture
4. Heat the filtrate until crystal starts to appear at the edge of the
solution
5. Cool
6. Filter
7. Rinse will few drops of distilled water
8. Dry with two filter paper
Discussion
1. What is the observation that indicates acid has reacted with zinc when it is added
into hydrochloric acid?
2. Name the gas release in this activity.
3. Write a chemical equation for the reaction between hydrochloric acid (HCl) and zinc
(Zn).
_________ + _________ → __________ + ___________
4. From the chemical equation written above, complete the following equations in
words.
Acid + Reactive metal → _____________ + ______________
Reaction Between Acid And Metal Carbonate
Reaction between nitric acid and
marble chips(CaCO3)
Discussion
1. What is the reason for using excess marble chips (CaCO3) to react with nitric acids
(HNO3)?
2. How do you remove the excess marble chips from the salt solution produced?
3. Write a chemical equation for the reaction between nitric acid (HNO3) and marble
chips (CaCO3).
__________ + __________ → _________ + ________ + __________
4. From the chemical equation written above, complete the following equations in
words.
Acid + Metal Carbonate→ __________ + ___________ + _________
Purification of Soluble Salts
by the Recrystallisation
Method
The soluble salt produced might contain
impurities during preparation. Therefore, the
soluble salt can be purified by the
recrystallisation method.
