Message from the President

Higher education around the world has been affected by the Covid-19 for years. The world will not be
the same after the pandemic. However, this truly disruptor has made us appreciate the value of
collaborations among universities, public and private sectors and communities both within and among
countries. We also have witnessed the good-will of people in creating many innovations for education
and learning as well as for the better living of people. Siam University takes this opportunity to reinvent
our university to become a leading institution creating innovation for sustainable future. In doing so,
the value of sustainable development has been integrated into the 3 pillars of university -
“Employability”, “Diversity”, “Sustainability”. Despite campus locked down, many initiatives have been
supported in order to follow our mission in developing university campus as the sustainable model and
sustainable living labs. Over years, our campus has been promoted as a testbed for new ideas and
innovations for the wellbeing of people, community, society, and our Planet with the hope that we will
be a strong engine in helping the world accomplishing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

This sustainability report is a compilation of our activities and efforts in relation to the 17 SDGs from the
second semester of academic year 2020 until present. Many activities have been carried on via online
but we have tried our best to serve our students, staff, and communities. We hope that this report will
be a useful sharing resource for all who are committed to make a better world.

“No Poverty” in Communities

In accordance to Siam University “Sustainable University, Sustainable District”, Siam University has initiated
many projects in response to community needs. One of the projects that has an aim to alleviate poverty is the
“Youth for Community Development Project” supported by Government Savings Bank which Siam University has
joined since our MOU signed on April 11, 2019. The project aims not only to provide lifelong learning about
savings but also provide assistance for the community economic needs. It should also be noted that the project
has followed the late King Rama IX’s advice that in helping people, “We should give them a fishing rod, not the
fishes”. Thus, the project aims to foster self-reliance leading to the betterment of living and sustainable
community. In 2019, 7 projects in 5 communities were initiated. The following year, another 5 communities were
selected to launch the projects. These communities serve as our “social living labs” where the students and staff
will have real-life experience and the communities will benefit economically, socially, and ecologically. Example
of the project relating to “no poverty” in the communities is the “Unseen Poonbamphen” festival Project. Our
students and staff have helped Poonbamphen community with their home-grown farms and organized a festival
to introduce their agricultural products and cook Thai dishes from local vegetables. We hope that this urban
farm will promote (Bio-Circular-Green) BCG economy in the community and surrounding areas. Moreover,
home-stay are initiated in the community, leading by Ban Suan Bonus Organic Farm Stay and Dong Yen Home
Stay. We are very fortunate to organize the festival on February 26, 2021 before Bangkok locked-down. At
present, the products are available online through Facebook: วถิ ชี ุมชนพนู บำเพญ็ รมิ คลองบำงเชอื กหนงั ”

sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life. The Student Affairs Office has worked with
organic farm at Klong Lat Mayom community for years. The products have been used in the market and the
households. At Poonbamphen community, the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic and Bangkok lock-down has
forced us to postpone our food festival and Sunday market. We then decided to make this opportunity to provide
a food bank for the members. At the same time, with the help of the Government Savings Bank, a Michelin Chef
was invited to investigate local farms and invent a unique Poombumphen menu which was televised nationwide.

Lifelong learning access is stipulated in section 39.8 of the present 2021 Code of Ethics of Siam University that
lifelong learning is valued. This statement is complied with the practices of the university that has an intention
to provide open access for all, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability or gender. Flexible learning has been
provided to the students and public even before the Covid-19. However, after the first wave of pandemic in
2020, the University provides Microsoft Team as an official learning platform to ensure that all students can
access to learning anytime, anywhere, any place. Our faculty members, staff and students have access to use
the computer room and can borrow notebook or PC from the university. These measures are very beneficial
during the second wave of the pandemic since only online learning is offered.

The two libraries of Siam University are accessible to public. All can access the main library through the website,
Face page, and Twitter. Two types of e-books from EBSCO's databases, e-Books Academic Collection and e-Books
Clinical Collection, are available for all (visit e-library.siam.edu (@siamulib) | Twitter). The main library also
provides convenient small study rooms and co-working spaces with plenty of computers and notebooks. The
Maruey Library, named after Dr. Maruey Phadungsit former Deputy Minister of Finance and CEO of the Stock
Exchange of Thailand, provides learning resources mainly in business and finance. These two libraries are the
main attraction for the visitors of the University and they regularly organized series of lectures and training for
anyone interested. Usually, a well-known scholars and prominent figures are invited. During the pandemic in
2020-2021, Siam University has initiated the “Strong Siam” application as a platform for the SU family and those
interested. This application can be downloaded through play store of the mobile phone. It is user-friendly and
can link to the resources of the main library. As for online learning, the Information Technology Center is the
main administrator and facilitator for computers and technological facilities (visit https://it.siam.edu/)

Recently, on June 17, 2021, the President of Siam University who is also the President of Association of Private
Higher Education Institutions of Thailand has signed an agreement with the Office of SMEs Promotion to use
“SME Academy 365” as an E-Learning Platform to offer an online program and training for approximately
200,000 new-blood entrepreneurs (https://mgronline.com/smes/detail/9640000058666)

Equal Opportunity of Female Students

Siam University values equal access to higher education. Hence, there is no restriction for women applications
and entry. The Covid-19 has affected on our enrollment and the number of this present academic year is not
static but the Office of Registration reports that in 2021, we have accepted slightly more students than the
previous year. The data indicates that there are 3,770, 3,680, qnd 3,593 female students in the academic year
of 2019, 2020, and 2021. These numbers amount to 48.60%, 46.81%, and 44.74% in 2019, 2020 and 2021
repectively. At Ph.D. level, the number of male and female doctoral candidataes are very close. At undergraduate
level, number of female students in Medicine is a little larger than male. Not much differences are found in the
area of STEM and in the area of Art, Humanities and Social sciences. As for the total number of graduates, there
are more women graduates than men in the total number in the academic year of 2018 – 2019; however, the number
of women graduates in 2020 are a little less. However, when look at fields of study, there are not much diiferences
between male and female graduates

SU Women in International Academia

Representatives from Siam University have been recognized nationally and internationally. Quite a few women
faculty members of the University have received awards and recognition from national organizations. Vice
President, Professor Emeritus Dr. Chanita Rukspollmuang, was the only women from Asia invited in the drafting
working group of the new Magna Charta Universitatum or MCU 2020. The group was selected with consideration
of equal gender as one can see that there are 4 males and 4 females. In addition, they represented countries
from different regions of the world. The MCU 2020 now has almost 1,000 signatories (http://www.magna-
charta.org/magna-charta-universitatum/mcu-2020). Moreover, with recognitition to our work on SDGs, the Vice
President was invited to speak on “Women’s Leadership and their Roles in Sustainable Development” at the
International Symposium of the Institute for Global Leadership on December 19, 2020. The event was organized
by the Institute for Global Leadership, Ochanomizu University, Japan, a research organization for the promotion
of global women’s leadership. The symposium discussed how women’s leadership is conceptualized, developed,
and put into practice, and how it needs to be modified. It highlighted the important role that female leaders play
in various social issues in Asian countries, providing insights from women in leadership roles in Thailand,
Philippines, South Korea, and Japan. (https://esdteachers.bangkok.unesco.org/?p=1298)

Siam University situates on the bank of Bang Chak canal which flows into Chao Phraya River and the Gulf of
Thailand. Water management in canals and ponds within and around the campus is thus imperatives. The
University, mainly the Faculty of Nursing and the Student Affairs have initiated many projects with the aim for
sustainable water management and sanitation. The outstanding project “Water Conservation and Development
Project” has strong cooperation with the U-tokapat Foundation under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the King and
the Office of Phasi chareon District for many consecutive years. Under the leadership of the Faculty of Nursing,
students and staff from the faculty have worked on the year project in Bang Chak canal continuously. The project
also received mutual collaboration from Sri Pradu community which located next to our campus. Together, we
have treated water in the canal by using “living” garbage traps and EM balls. We started the project by making
nearby communities, located on the bank of Bang Chak canal, aware of the necessary of clean water and
sanitation as well as how we can treat the water and recycle it for household use. In our campus, the students
started a “bicycling for water” project in which they can bike and water trees in the campus at the same time.
The project has won many awards such as in the 2019 and 2020 SUN Thailand (Sustainable University Network
of Thailand) student contests and have received the first runner-up prize in the 2020 competition of the U-
tokapat Foundation under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the King.

Renewable Energy

Siam University has started a solar power program as a renewable energy source. Begonning two years ago,
solar lights are installed in some areas and pedestrian paths in our campus. The program expands gradually and
we have now installed more solar cells on the roofs of many buildings. It was shown that the total electric
capacity produced from solar power is approximately 719,531 kW-h. We intend to increase our energy saving
capacity by planning to install more solar cell lights and solar roof in other areas in the campus, both indoor and
outdoor. According to Siam Energy Annual Report 2021, our electric bills in the year 2020 were 17,273,460 baht
while the electric bills in the year 2021 were 13,605,883 baht. We have thus managed to reduce 26.96%
reduction. This reduction was due to other methods that we used to control the electricity usage of the lecture
rooms, elevators, air conditioners replacement and solar lights installation along the pedestrian path within the
university. However, the reduced electric bills were also affected from Covid-19 situations, which the university
was closed for a few months. In the near future, we are planning to initiate other measures to reduce campus
energy consumption by reallocating our classroom schedule in accordance to the daily energy consumption and
by installing “Wind Turbine” as another source of renewable energy in the campus.

CWIE at Siam University

Office of Cooperative and Work Integrated Education
Line Group, Facebook สหกิจศกึ ษา มหาวทิ ยาลยั สยาม website: http://coop.siam.edu

Siam University is among the first batch of universities to adopt cooperative education into practice since 2002
with the goal to ensure that our students will have a direct working experience with our industrial partners both
locally and internationally. The Office of Cooperative and Work Integrated Education was set up in accordance
with the “Employability” pillar of the University. More than 30 curricular have embedded cooperative education
as a mandatory course and we are planning to revise our curriculum to integrate Cooperative and Work
Integrated Education (CWIE) in the courses offered.

At present, the students are prepared for the working world through a co-op preparatory course, of which the
requirement is at least 30 hours of training according to the pre co-op term, co-op term, and post co-op
standards of Thai Association of Cooperative Education (TACE) and Ministry of Higher Education, Science,
Research and Innovation (MHESI). The co-op preparatory course is designed to enhance students’ necessary
skills corresponding to the 21st Century skills including critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity,
cross cultural understanding; integrate innovation-based/problem-based/industry-based projects; equip
students with innovative consciousness. We also stimulate entrepreneurial culture through University Business
Incubator (UBI). The Office of Cooperative and Work Integrated Education is dedicated to connect our university
with industrial sector so that our students will be well prepared for the working world.

The Office of Cooperative and Work Integrated Education provides “One Stop Service” to our students, faculty
members and industrial partners. We have formed a strong national and international cooperative and work-
integrated education networks. Siam University has been an active participant of the World Association for
Cooperative and Work Integrated Education (WACE) and follows the guidelines of the Global Cooperative &
Work-Integrataed Education Charter. Our international students participated their event in Durban University
of Technology, South Africa in 2019 and 2020. Our President, Dr. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, is the present Vice
President of Thai Association of Cooperative Education (TACE) and our CWIE director, Dr. Maruj Limpawattana,
was selected as member of the board since 2016. He also works with MHESI to develop CWIE Demand-driven
Platform. Moreover, as Chair of Lower Central Thai Cooperative Education Development Network, the university
has hosted seminars with MHESI and partners to prepare our members for the CWIE curriculum on September
1 and 29, 2021. We also have hosted successful student competitions in 2020 and 2021. In the latest Network
competition held on April 2, 2021, two projects of our students were selected as 1 st and 3 rd runnerups and our

The Covid-19 pandemic has opened an opportunity for academia to create new ideas and innovations. Besides
daily-use necessities such as mask, sanitized gel/alchohol, Siam University has encouraged our faculty members
and students to create innovation for campus use and for donating to needed hospitals and organizations such
as MHESI, King Rama III Memorial Hospital (Phranangklao) and Somdejprapinklao Hospital, the Royal Navy.
Examples of innovation include automatic sanitization gate, automatic temperature measurement, positive
pressure helmet, high flow oxygen, UVC sanitization cabinet. A new innovation is “Strong Siam Application” (see
SDG4) in which all can downloaded to update the Covid-19 situation. Another interdisciplinary invention is the
“Intelligent Trash Bin” developed by faculty members and students in the Department of Civil Environment and
Sustainable Engineering, led by Trithos Kamsuwan and Tawan Penrut. Computer Engineering students set up a
software program to control a hardware system while Mechanical Engineering install a mechanism to automate
trash bin. This Intelligent Trash Bins are utilized in Office of Phasi chareon District, Rung Fa community, and Ban
Bang Khae Social Welfare Development Center for Older Person. (https://www.opt-news.com/news/17973 and
https://ucdnews.com/archives/3721) At national level, our Siam Future Unicorn Startup student teams have
participated in the National Innovation Agency (NIA) (virtual) 2021 Startup Thailand League Mega Hackathon
“The Next Frontier of Innovation”. In addition, the Faculty of Engineering has hosted a virtual TESA Top Gun
Rally #15 with the Thai Embedded Systems Association during February 22-26 February 2021. Many universities,
including Siam University, had encouraged their students to compete for “The Best Embedded System
Developers”. (see dettails in https://www.facebook.com/TESAatSiamU/ and https://www.tesa.or.th/)
