CERTIFICATE OF TENNESSEE ANCESTRY

In 1986 the Tennessee Genealogical Society began a program to recognize descendants
of the state's earliest settlers and to preserve their history. We have received
records on many of our founders, and publication of that material is in the planning
stages. If you have an ancestor who lived in Tennessee at any time from first set-
tlement through 1880 you are eligible to participate in the Certificate Program. It
is not necessary for you to be a member of the Tennessee Genealogical Society, or
for you to live in Tennessee. It is only necessary that you have a documented an-
cestor who did. There are three categories:

Prior to Statehood (1796): Pioneer - Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry
1797 to 1850: Settler - Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry
1851 to 1880: Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry

Pictured below is a reduced copy of the certificate. The 8 x 11 inch original is
printed on ivory parchment with background illustrations in a gray half-tone. Print-
ing is black highlighted by a gilt border. A shiny gold seal decorates the Settler
certificate, with a ribbon added for the Pioneer cerLificate.
