Santa’s Beer List

Santa has selected an amazing range of local brewed Cask Ale and Craft Beer for you to try.

Cask Ale or ‘Real Ale’ is the traditional form of British Beer. It is a “living” product that
continues to ferment in the cask until it is served and according to CAMRA, the Campaign for
Real Ale, it represents the “pinnacle of brewing art”.

This year, for the first time at Burghfest, we also have a selection of Craft Beer but What is
Craft Beer?

There is no agreed definition of Craft Beer in the UK, so Santa asked his Elves what they
thought Craft Beer was. Here is what they said.

“…like lager but more flavour”
“beer produced by a small independent brewer”

“Craft Beer – the only craft where it’s you that gets hammered”
“Small but perfectly formed”

“Beer for avocado eating, quinoa swilling vegans, with a penchant for pretence”
“art in a glass”

“An IPA with whacky extra ingredients and strong enough to blow your head off”
“The beer equivalent of a Honda Prius”

“Who gives a **** what it’s called. I’m off to the pub.”

Not very helpful!

Santa then asked CAMRA but fell asleep during the rather lengthy response but thinks they
said all real ale was craft beer but not all craft beer was real ale.

Fortunately, Santa is very old and well-travelled and remembered that the term Craft Beer
originated in the USA. Mass produced bland lager led to the growth of small independent
brewers being formed to brew beer with great taste. The predominate style was based on
India Pale Ale (IPA) originating from England but these new brewers experimented by adding
loads more hops and a range of other ingredients. More recently they have similarly
experimented with other traditional beer styles. The beer was sold at a premium price in kegs,
bottles and cans and always served chilled. To distinguish these beers from mass produced
bland beer, they coined the term ‘craft beer’ and defined at as beer brewed in a traditional
way by small independent brewers. The growth of ‘craft beer’ in the US has been phenomenal
and this beer style has been adopted by many of the new and existing small UK breweries to
complement their ‘real ale’.

Here at Burghfest we use the term “Craft Beer” to mean “awesome beer, naturally
carbonated and best served chilled”. Disagree with our definition? Feel free to discuss it over
a pint of one of our excellent locally produced craft beers.

Burghfest 2019 5

6 Burghfest 2019

To help you choose your beer we have categorized our “Cask Ale” and “Craft Beer” as shown
below:

Lager Lager is a fizzy beer served chilled that has a reputation, at least amongst
beer nerds, for lacking taste.
Lager We have selected a Craft Lager for the festival that shows that this
Pale doesn’t have to be the case! Perfect for those who prefer a chilled fizzy
drink. Real ale drinkers should try it to see how good lager can be.
IPA or Pale Ale Lager is not available as a Cask Ale.
Golden Ales
Amber India Pale Ale’s were first brewed for the colonial market and were
strong in alcohol and high in hops to survive the sea journey. Look for
juicy malt, citrus fruit and a big spicy, peppery bitter hop character, with
strengths of 4% upwards.
Golden Ale’s were developed in the 1980’s as a lower strength refreshing
summer drink to tempt lager drinkers. Golden ales are lighter hopped
and hence less bitter that IPA’s.

These are the traditional English beer style. Look for a spicy, peppery and
grassy hop character, a powerful bitterness, tangy fruit and juicy and
nutty malt.

Bitter Best Bitters are stronger than Bitters and the malt and fruit character
Best Bitter tends to dominate.

Dark Mild is the oldest beer style in the country but out of fashion until
recently. It has a taste all its own. Look for chocolate, fruity and nutty
Mild or Stout flavours. If you have never had Mild before, give it a try!
Unfined Stouts have a profound dark and roasted malt character with raisin and
sultana fruit, espresso or cappuccino coffee, liquorice and molasses, all
underscored by a bittersweet taste.
Finings is a fish-based product that is used to clarify beer. The finings
drop to the bottom of the cask with the yeast and are not consumed.

There is a growing trend towards ‘unfined’ beers as they supposedly have
more flavour. Because they don’t use finings, they are slightly cloudy.

Note that ‘Unfined beers’ are suitable for vegetarians/vegans. None of our beers are gluten
free

Rudolph’s Wine Selection

I spent the summer lazing and grazing around Europe, short journeys always appeal in the
Summer aiding my Red Nose recovery (wine definitely helps this) and preparing for a busy
December.
Travelling through France, Portugal, Italy as well making a pleasant diversion to Sicily and
Romania my thoughts were never far from my friends at Burghfest, so I gave up some of my
holiday time to go wine tasting. Mrs Rudolph is never happy when I return from a quick outing
with too red a nose, but these sacrifices need to be made.
Whilst I will have no problems with boarders I realised that your little island is building great
defences to prevent anything getting in from Europe, so I thought this Burghfest we should
celebrate some great wines from Europe while can.
The Sicilian Pino Grigio is a very pleasant delight and the fact the Romanian Pinot Noir is called
Paris Street unnecessarily confusing.
Make sure you give them all a try as this could well be your last chance to enjoy the great
variety of European wine tastes before you get stuck with flavourless stuff from California.
Happy Slurping
Lots of Love
Rudolph

PS. We will also be serving Pimm’s & Lemonade during the day and Gin & Tonic in the evening.
I brought back a couple of very special bottles of Terres de Mistral Provence Gin on my travels.
You’ll have to ask one of Santa’s Elves if you want to try this as they are hiding the bottles
under the counter for themselves. Naughty Elves…

THAMES VALLEY AIR AMBULANCE

Thames Valley Air Ambulance is at the frontline of saving lives. Our highly trained team gives
the best chance when the worst happens.

Every day, someone in our community could be in urgent need of our service. Within minutes,
we bring the expertise, equipment and treatment of the hospital to you.

Our doctor and paramedic teams are able to perform advanced medical procedures at the
scene of an incident. We deliver treatment that would normally only be available in a hospital
by taking advanced medical care and expertise to a patient, saving time when minutes matter.
This means that a patient is diagnosed, treated and given hospital-level care more quickly,
increasing the chance of survival.

Operating 19 hours a day, 365 days a year, the iconic red helicopter is staffed with an expert
pilot, doctor and paramedic and can reach anyone in need the region within 15 minutes of
take-off. The road vehicles, known as Critical Care Response Cars, carry the same equipment
as the helicopter.

Thames Valley Air Ambulance is a charity and is fully funded by the generosity of the
community it serves across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
