EXPLANATORY NOTES
Finding aids are resources that help users identify specific information within a record group, collection, or series of archival documents.
In this assignment, we will use OFA (Online Finding Aids) to find appropriate references for our related topic, Saloma. Saloma Binti Ismail was
born in Pasir Panjang, Singapore, on January 22, 1935, as the second daughter of Ismail Osman and Umi Kalsom Mahbon. Saloma used to enjoy
singing when she was younger. It all started when she made an unintentional appearance on local radio for the first time. Her stepfather had taken
her to witness an orchestra perform for a Malayan radio broadcast when everything happened.
Saloma's also successful in commercials. This comercial might be considered her return to the industry after a hiatus from 1952 to 1953.
This commercial might be considered her return to the industry after a hiatus from 1952 to 1953. She is also a success on international commercials.

INTRODUCTION
In the archive, it has a finding aid. Finding aids are tools that assist users in order to locate any information they want in a specific record
group, collection, or series of archival materials. If there are no finding aids. The users will have difficulty in finding any information they need.
Following this, it will focus on Online Finding Aids, (OFA) of National Archive of Malaysia. The National Archives of Malaysia serves as a
storehouse and keeper of official records, private records, memorial and library materials, files, publications, newspapers/magazines, agreement
letters, audio visual materials, royal archives, personal letters, private records and archives, microfilms, photographs, maps, plans, and charts
comprise the archive collection. To get the archival materials, it should follow the predetermined arrangement known as archival arrangement that
starts with category, followed by subcategory, then source, record type and last is archived material. All of this will be related to each other.
To continue this, in every state or country there are definitely singers, actors, painters and many more. It can be said that they are like
entertainers in a country. In a time when they became entertainers in their homeland. It is also a career for them. These people have contributed to
our country with the results of their careers as performers. For instance, by bringing the name of a country indirectly to become famous in the
world. Therefore they, especially veteran artists, have a special place in the archive to commemorate their services and contributions as long as
they serve through their careers.
Back to OFA of National Archive of Malaysia, we need to research using the finding aids for the Malaysian Veteran Artist Archives that
are already chosen by us namely Biduanita Negara Puan Sri Datin Amar Salmah Ismail, or better known as Saloma. She is one of the Malaysian
Veteran Artists who was very popular in Malaysia as a singer and also as an actor from the 1950s to the early 1980s.

EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY
Salmah Binti Ismail, or better known as Saloma, the second daughter of Ismail Osman and Umi Kalsom Mahbon,
was born on January 22, 1935, in Pasir Panjang, Singapore. Saloma used to like singing as a child. Mariani, her
sister, was generally the one who would hear about her dreams of being a singer. Saloma began singing with local
street musicians when she was five years old. Her desire to be a singer grew much stronger after that.
Saloma's parents divorced later in life. She and Mariani then followed their father to Tanjung
Karang, Selangor, which is in the state of Tanah Melayu (now Malaysia). They were both

(Saloma) named Mum Yusoff. Mum Yusoff was a member of The Singapore Boys, a local keroncong
group that had a contract to perform at The New World Cabaret Club. Saloma's stepfather took her to the cabaret one night
and introduced her to the crowd because she had always expressed an interest in singing. Subsequently, she was requested to
perform Georgia Gibbs' song "Seven Lonely Days." The audience was impressed by her singing ability and vocals. She went
on to sing a few more songs, which was the start of her singing career. She was 13 years old at the time. Figure 2:

CHAPTER 3: Early career
http://kelantan.uitm.edu.my/index.php/faculty-of-information-management
EARLY CAREER
Saloma’s early career was around 1949 to 1953. It began when she accidentally appeared on local radio for the first time. This happened
when her stepfather had taken her to see an orchestra performing for a Malayan radio broadcast. However, the singer who was supposed to sing
some songs in the orchestra was unable to attend named Rokiah Hanafi or better known as Rokiah Wandah. At that time, her stepfather had
persuaded her to replace Rokiah Wandah. Finally, Saloma has replaced Rokiah Wandah by
singing Rokiah's song so well.
Starting from that event she has received many offers
from orchestras throughout Singapore to be their lead
singer. One of the title songs that she sang on Radio
Malaya was entitled "Sang Rang Bulan". Then in the
early 1950s, her dream career of becoming a singer was
not as expected as she wanted. Instead, she started her

film fans were shocked by the news that Saloma
announced that she was married to Aman Ramlie. Even so, their marriage did not last long
and they divorced in September 1952 when Saloma was pregnant with their child.
http://kelantan.uitm.edu.my/index.php/faculty-of-information-management
After she divorced, she was taken back to her home in Mount Emily and lived with her mother. After her last film titled regret no longer
with the film archipelago. Saloma had terminated her contract with ex-husband company on the grounds that she wanted to take a break because
she was pregnant and also refused to work with her ex -husband again. In late 1952 to 1953, Saloma ended her career as a performer. During the
year 1953, she gave birth to a son named Armali bin Aman Ramlie. However her career does not stop here, she continues her commercial success
and also the success of her international success.
COMMERCIAL SUCCESS
Her commercial success also can be said as her starting her career back after she ended her career in 1952 to 1953
. This commercial success began after she came back from Sarawak and Brunei on 23 July 1954 where Pathe was offered
Saloma to record her voice. At that time, it was supported by Syed Hamid, also known as S. Hamid who rose to frame at
that time. Saloma and S.Hamid know each other after starring in the movie Sesal Tak Sudah. A song titled "Pandang
Kasih", composed by Rahmat Ali and lyrics by Ismadi, is rumba-style. Meanwhile the song "Jika Tak Berjumpa". The
song comes from an Arabic melody that was composed by S. Hussein Bagushir and lyrics by Wan-Chu. Both of these
songs were accompanied by the Al Aishu Wal Meleh Orchestra, conducted by S.Omar Bagushir. The first solo of Saloma

Then, the song “Jika Tak Berjumpa'' is the first duet Saloma and S. Hamid.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
As we know, she started singing at the age of seven. Then become as a professional singer when she was teenager. It is her international
success. If we hear her voice during her singing, it is more to the style of Ella Fitzgerald and Hari Doris. She also said that she liked singing more
than being an actor. Not only that, during her early career as a singer, she honed her talents with the Orkes Fajar Murni that was led by Yusof
Osman. In the 1960s, she was also involved with another orchestra named Panca Sitara.

CHAPTER 4: Retirement
http://kelantan.uitm.edu.my/index.php/faculty-of-information-management
RETIREMENT
Throughout her career, Saloma never stated that she would retire. Saloma's health suffered as a result of her sadness and depression
following the death of her spouse, P. Ramlee, in 1973. Due to the death of her late husband, she became ill. She got health problems, she had many
ailments that caused her to appear skinny, and malnutrition drove her to become less involved in the
entertainment sector. Saloma was diagnosed with jaundice and brought to the Kuala Lumpur General
Hospital in August 1978.
Saloma was in the hospital when the Muslims wanted to
Figure 9: celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri a few days later, which was
The news about Saloma being warded even more tragic at the time. When Saloma's family and
relatives came to see her on the first Eid, the Kuala Lumpur
General Hospital was packed. Artists and journalists from all around the world came to see the National
Singer. The Artists Association had taken the initiative to help Saloma by establishing a Saloma
collection fund, led by its President Zainuddin Zimbo. Saloma was eventually permitted to return home
after spending a month in the hospital. But this disease hit again after a few years, and she was sent to
Assunta Hospital Petaling Jaya, where she died on April 24, 1983. Saloma gravesite is at Jalan Ampang
Muslim Cemetery, Kuala Lumpur. Her grave is next to her husband P. Ramle. Saloma's retirement was Figure 10:

CHAPTER 5: Awards and Recognitions
http://kelantan.uitm.edu.my/index.php/faculty-of-information-management
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Saloma, or Biduanita Negara, Puan Sri Datin Amar Salmah binti Ismail, AMN, was a prominent singer in Malaysia from the 1950s until
the early 1980s. She is one of the 3 artists who received the National Singer and Singer Recognition. In 1978, Saloma was named First National
Singer, and in 1990, she was named Puan Sri. Her title denotes her status as Tan Sri's wife.
Saloma's awards and degrees include Ahli Mangku Negara - A.M.N in 1975 and Kesatria Mangku Negara - K.M.N in 1990 (posthumously).
The Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negara's Ahli Mangkuan Negara (A.M.N.) is the fifth of six ranks in the Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negara
(YMPN). The Royal Malaysia Award's third degree, YMPN, is the third of 10 degrees. There is no limit to the number of A.M.N. Furthermore,
Kesatria Mangku Negara (K.M.N.) is the fourth rank of Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negara's six-rank degree (YMPN). The Royal Malaysia Award's
third degree, YMPN, is the third of 10 degrees. There is no limit to the number of K.M.N.
In 1978, she was the first woman to get the national singing award. In Malaysia, the title of National Singer is solely bestowed to female
performers who have made significant contributions. In this usage, the term "singer" refers to a diva rather than a vocalist. The country's Association
of Singers, Musicians, and Songwriters bestows this honor (PAPITA). Puan Sri Saloma was the country's first female singer to be awarded the
title of Biduanita Negara, which she obtained in 1978. It is a great honor for her, who has made significant contributions to the country.
Jalan Saloma is a small road near to Menara Public Bank Kuala Lumpur and Jalan Ampang Islamic Cemetery that contains the word
Saloma. In addition, Pintasan Saloma is a bridge that connects Kampung Baru and KLCC through Lorong Raja Muda Musa 3 and Jalan Saloma.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there is a lot of history and information about Malaysian Veteran Artists like Saloma that can be found in Online Finding
Aids: National Archives of Malaysia for students and researchers to explore (OFA). It is conducive if there are any archival materials related to
the veteran artist that can be accessed. This may also provide an opportunity for researchers or the general public to learn more about the lives of
these artists in the past. Documents, audios, and videos, among other things, have been stored in Online Finding Aids: National Archives of
Malaysia (OFA). It became more fascinating as archival materials, such as rarely seen photographs, were added. It can provide a clear picture of
veteran artists from the past. We completed this task more quickly by using Online Finding Aids (OFA): National Archives of Malaysia. We also
learned a lot about the lives of veteran artists after completing this assignment. However, some restrictions make archival materials in the OFA
inaccessible. Finally, archivists must keep archival material in national archives so that researchers and the general public can use OFA as one of
their sources for information or reference materials.
