Our Curriculum - Ein Cwricwlwm Our inclusive curriculum is designed with ambition. Our curriculum is rooted in Welsh culture and values. Aiming high together

Tegi the Tern At the Point of Ayr Federation we have introduced Tegi the Tern. Little Terns are the second rarest of all the seabirds in Wales and only nest in one site, that being Gronant Dunes. In the past they nested further down the coast at the Point of Ayr. As the Point of Ayr Federation we have decided to adopt the Little Tern as a mascot for the Federation. Tegi the Tern has an important role to play across the Federation in supporting the children with their learning and development within the new curriculum. The curriculum has 4 purposes which support all learners from 3 - 16 to become: Tegi the Tern will provide the children with a visual representation of the 4 purposes and these will be visible all around the Federation. Tegi the Tern also highlights the importance of the 3 Cross-Curricular Responsibilities which are: Again the visual representation supports the children in understanding these elements. Aiming high together

Teaching and Learning At the Point of Ayr Federation we look at what we are teaching? how we are teaching? and why we are teaching? We use a variety of teaching methods to excite and engage our learners and enhance the learning experience. We endeavour to provide the learners with varied experiences and opportunities to explore and investigate the world around them. Learners are able to guide their learning using pupil voice. They have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively, collaboratively within the classroom and across the Federation. Creating a Welsh Ethos Aiming high together We are very blessed at the Point of Ayr Federation to be situated surrounded by a wealth of Welsh culture and heritage within the heart of the Thomas Pennant country. Our Federation was named after the Point of Ayr Colliery - Y Parlwr Du. The colliery was the main source of income for our communities, and their children attended our schools. The colliery language was mostly Welsh in its own unique form that only those who worked there really understood it, as was its singing and sporting traditions. Famous Welsh Playwright, Artists and Singers attended our schools - David Lloyd and Emlyn Williams to name but a few. Artists who visited were inspired and painted portraits, like the work of Albert Houthuesen who painted the colliers and their families. These are on show at the National Gallery. Our “cynefin” is rich not only in Welsh culture but in its own linguistic traditions- we pride ourselves in embracing the language as an integral part of our everyday routines in school. Through our involvement with the Urdd and other initiatives, we experience a sense of not only belonging to Wales and its culture, but making and building traditions of our own. We firmly believe that hearing and living the language everyday will enrich our confidence, skills and opportunities for our future years.

Enriched Curriculum Outdoor Learning At the Point of Ayr Federation we have developed our school grounds in order to offer a wide range of outdoor learning opportunities. We have extensive school grounds and each school has a forest area and a Forest School Teacher. Enrichment Activities At the Point of Ayr Federation we endeavour to provide the children with varied extra-curricular activities which take place at lunchtime and after school. These can vary from sports clubs including dodgeball, balance bikes and kickboxing to book clubs, drama clubs, art clubs , the Urdd o name just a few. Visits and Visitors At the Point of Ayr Federation we provide learners with the opportunity to attend a variety of different places in order to enhance and develop their learning. We involve the learners in making decisions about where they would like to visit. Community Involvement At the Point of Ayr Federation we are eager to work with the community in attending events, working collaboratively on joint projects and developing our understanding of our locality. Aiming high together

Play At the Point of Ayr Federation we understand the importance of play, learners have the opportunity to choose from a range of experiences and equipment throughout the day. We give the learners the opportunity to select the play equipment they wished to purchase with specific funding. Aiming high together

Nurturing Schools At the Point of Ayr Federation we are currently working towards the National Nurturing Schools Award. We endeavour to create a nurturing ethos within our schools where every member of the school community feels valued. We ensure that positive relationships are built and modelled within the Point of Ayr Federation and all stakeholders feel safe within the school environment and community. We base our ethos on the 6 Principles of Nurture, which are: ● Children's learning is understood developmentally. ● The classroom offers a safe base. ● Nurture is important for the development of self-esteem. ● Language is understood as a vital means of communication. ● All behaviour is communication. ● Transitions are significant in the lives of children. Teachers work with the children in creating a open and supportive learning environment, where everyone is able to reach their full potential. We understand the importance of getting to know children as individuals and work hard in ensuring we meet the needs of everyone in an inclusive and nurturing environment. Attendance At the Point of Ayr Federation we understand the importance of school attendance on learners well-being, social skills and ability to learn. It is vital that all learners attend school regularly. Attending school is vitally important, we are going to be closely monitoring attendance across the Federation in the upcoming academic year. In order to support the children in their learning it is essential that they are in school, we are finding that more children are missing many days from school and this is creating clear gaps in their learning and their social skills. We understand that children can be poorly and need time off due to illness, please work with us as a school in informing the class teacher at your earliest convenience. We are working with Flintshire County Council to increase the attendance of our children within the Federation and will be carrying out attendance reviews on a fortnightly basis. Our Federation target is 94%. Aiming high together
