Approved vs. Unapproved Parts
Aviation parts that do not meet applicable regulatory requirements
enter the aviation system every day
The airworthiness of aeronautical products may be in question if the design and
quality of the parts are unknown. Positive identification of unapproved parts can be
difficult if the parts display characteristics similar to that of an approved part.
Approved Parts © 2015 by Honeywell International Inc. All rights reserved.
• Parts that conform to regulatory production standards.
They can be approved under a parts manufacturer
approval (PMA) or technical standard order (TSO), in
conjunction with type-certification procedures, through
CAA approval, or by conforming with recognized
industry specifications.
Unapproved Parts
• Parts that fail to meet any of the criteria of an approved
part
• Aircraft parts not manufactured or repaired in
accordance with CAA regulations
- This is a broad classification that includes counterfeit
parts, stolen parts, production overruns, expired life-
limited parts, approved parts improperly returned to
service and fraudulently marked

Suspected Unapproved Parts
• Occasionally, parts that may not meet applicable requirements

- Differences in finish, size, or color

• SUPs can be:
- Parts that lack proper documentation
- Parts rejected during production because of defects
- Parts that have been improperly maintained
- Parts not shown to comply with CAA requirements
• SUPs may include items from a supplier who produces
parts for an approved manufacturer and then ships them
directly to end-users without the approved
manufacturer's authorization
• SUPs may also be counterfeit parts:
- Parts deliberately misrepresented as designed and produced under an approved system or
other acceptable method
- Used or recycled approved parts that have reached a design life limit or have been damaged
beyond repair, but are deliberately misrepresented as acceptable
