AHEB-PLAYBILL 2023 - as of March 28

AHEB-PLAYBILL 2023 - as of March 28

nakakaindak, nakakaaliw nakakatindig balahibo.

Dexter M. Santos Director & Choreographer How does one revitalize Ang Huling El Bimbo five years after its world premiere? Coming from the theater lockdown due to the pandemic, I have my own share of anxiety and fears. I knew from the start how massive AHEB has become, so when Newport World Resorts and Full House Theater Company decided to reopen its theater season with AHEB, I admit that I was afraid. How do you restage the dynamic blocking, complicated characterization, difficult singing, intricate choreography, huge sets, numerous revolve, and car cues with a cast that is 80 percent new? Many of the artists would agree. Sometimes, it is much easier to create something new rather than try to remember what has already been done. The ensemble reviewing their choreography; the leads on an early call in another room participating in a workshop led by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo; Myke Salomon reviewing music and making sure harmonies are on point; Fritz Esase intently reviewing and notating performance videos from different angles; Stephen Viñas checking their choreographic journal for new combinations and patterns; Michael Williams intently talking to and preparing our child actors; Christian Parado and his team preparing the substitute props and set pieces that would reach the hallway outside the rehearsal studio and even the lower floor. And as the actual rehearsal commences, the tedious process begins. A process that involves overwhelming direction, direct to the point and no sugarcoating notes, complicated dance combinations and harmonies, confusing stage and backstage traffic, and a wide gamut of emotions. The eyes of the theater neophytes in the cast are in blank stare; the seasoned ones saturating every possibility; and Sheila Francisco making sure that every rehearsal moment is on the edge – not marking any acting choice or song – and not holding back even the slightest bit. And this is what the theater stands for – a commitment to the hard and difficult work. A commitment to artistry. A commitment to an uncompromising standard – that if one fails or commits mistakes, we sleep them over and come back energized and ready to fight. And of course, a commitment to our audience. I do not know what will happen as we approach the mad dash of tech rehearsals and the euphoric chaos to opening night. But there is one thing that I know – that our hearts are full. AHEB is an unselfish product of artists, producers, musicians, managers, technicians, and NWR employees who, through all these years, gave their all in making sure that the El Bimbo love that we share on stage transcends to our audiences. Marami pong salamat sa pagkakataong makasama kayong muli sa paglarga pa-alapaap! 2

After two years of the COVID uncertainty that impacted live performances in the country, Full House Theater Company is happy to be back in full force to continue our commitment to developing original productions for our audiences. It seems so long ago when we started the journey that was Ang Huling El Bimbo. None of us realized how strongly it would resonate with Filipino audiences. The show opened to rave reviews in 2018, followed shortly by another staging in 2019 which was equally wellreceived. In this third iteration of Ang Huling El Bimbo, our audiences can expect significant but subtle changes in the music, a more streamlined book, an updated choreography, and a vibrant new cast. Our dedicated cast, crew, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly with our brilliant musical arranger Myke Salomon, guided by the clear vision of our director Dexter Santos, to bring you the 2023 revival of this epic musical. We thank you all for the years of support you have given Ang Huling El Bimbo. We look forward to seeing you in the Theater! Michael Stuart Williams Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo Artistic Directors 3

6 The Eraserheads captured the imagination of a whole generation of music fans, and their music continues to capture the hearts of all those who hear their songs. For some reason, their songs seemed to perfectly fit events in our lives—providing a sort of soundtrack that we fondly remember many years later. This is why their songs continue to be in demand for use as movie and TV theme songs, as well as for some of the most memorable TV advertisements ever created. For the first time, however, these songs were used in a grand musical production, and we are extremely happy to be working with Newport World Resorts, Full House Theater Company, and Ultimate Shows, Inc. for this project. Bringing these songs to life in a musical is not an easy task, but we are confident that the production team did an excellent job in weaving the songs into the story. We hope that the success of Ang Huling El Bimbo will pave the way for more musical productions using Filipino songs because, after all, nothing compares to Filipino music. A crowd gathers in the middle of a busy street, the mundane rhythm of their daily lives interrupted by a moment that briefly snaps them out of their routines. But they are quick to move on, eager to continue their survival song. This is contemporary Manila. A phone call disrupts the lives of three men, summoning them to the precinct. The call could not have come at a worse time, as Hector, Emman, and Anthony are succumbing to pressures in their respective lives. At the precinct, they see each other––an unexpected and awkward reunion after more than twenty years, as they wait for Arturo Banlaoi to arrive. Flash back to the ‘90s, as the three men remember how their paths first crossed in college: meeting at the dorm, going through the ups and downs of student life, facing challenges that are somehow made easier with each other’s company. Memories are vividly recalled––fun times at the university, their antics during military training, stories of their romantic escapades, and hanging out at their favorite diner, Toyang’s. This is where they met Joy, a fellow student and the niece of Tiya Dely, who owns the diner. Bonds are formed, friendships solidified, and dreams shared. Being at the precinct also stirs up unwelcome memories amongst three––memories of one fateful night weeks before their graduation that changed their lives forever. Arturo Banlaoi arrives, bearing bad news. The three men get into a heated argument about what to do next, triggering a long-overdue confrontation about the incident from twenty years ago, and what they could have and should not have done. They are uninterrupted only by the arrival of the people Joy left behind: Tiya Dely, and Joy’s orphaned daughter Ligaya. This story unfolds in two timelines, with a series of flashbacks and scenes from the present interwoven to tell the tale of a friendship shattered into a thousand pieces. But life continues as Hector, Emman, and Anthony have to find a way to pick up the pieces, and make the choice to mend their broken lives. SYNOPSIS 7
