Consecration Service

Our consecration service for the Fall 2009 walks will be Saturday, August 15 at Bethlehem UMC in Claremont.

We have two consecration services each year. One in the Spring and one in the Fall. The purpose of these
services is to declare the walks holy - to give them to God. The team dedicates their service as team members, and
we as a community dedicate our service to pray for, volunteer behind the scenes, make agape gifts, and/or donate
drinks and food for these walks. This is a very special service with serious dedications made to God.
All community members are invited to attend. Please bring a heavy snack and a drink for the fellowship time
after the service.

Pray for our Fall Walks!

Remember the Power of Prayer!

Boys’ Flight - September 5-7, 2009
These Flights will be held at Camp Carolwood.

These will be our last Flights at Camp Carolwood. We will be moving to Camp Loy White for all future Flights.
We have already planned our Flights for August 2010. We are also changing our days from Saturday-Monday to

We are still in need of support - there are several places in which you can serve. Please pray and seek God’s guid-
ance. If you feel led to find a place to serve and enjoy youth, please contact Kelly Story
([email protected]) or Nancy Henson ([email protected]).

Donations

Another way to serve during our “off-season” or if you are unable to physically be at camp is through monetary or
other donations. This may be done at any time during the year. Monetary donations will go towards conference
room supplies, food, camp insurance, scholarships for team members, candles, etc. You can also purchase these
types of items and contact one of our board members to make arrangements for getting the donations to camp.
Questions? Please contact Eric Clark.

From the Vice Chairperson

Team Selection

I hope to find you all doing well. The team selection committee meets 4 times a year on each women’s walk. We
select the prospective team members according to their progressive servant hood. If you haven’t served behind the
scenes in a while we would love to see you. It is a real blessing to work behind the scenes and watch the pilgrims
change from Thursday night with that look of why am I here to Sunday evening when they want to continue on
with this experience we call Emmaus. We now have over 3000 members in the Emmanuel Emmaus community,
but have only 200 – 300 that are active with the community. We also struggle with getting enough men to fill the
men’s walks. Please become more active in this community by helping serve behind the scenes, sponsorship,
prayer chapel, set-up - take/down, or with set up and take down of candlelight. If you have not been called to
serve on a team in a while please let me know. A lot of times the Lay Director calls back and says that the phone
number is disconnected or the wrong number. Please keep your contact information up to date. Please check the
Emmanuel Emmaus web page for current updates and information at www.geocities.com/emmanuelemmaus.
To keep your information updated or to request where you’re at in the team selection process please contact me at
[email protected].

The Upperroom says this about servanthood: Emmaus servanthood begins and ends with anonymous positions of
servanthood, such as working in the kitchen, praying in the chapel, sorting letters in the agape room, and cleaning
bathrooms. This kind of sacrifice and servanthood is the heart of Emmaus and is where the development of Chris-
tian leadership begins. Those who seek “important jobs” probably need to be assigned more humble task for their
own sake as well as for the good of the community. Those who first give themselves wholeheartedly and joyfully
to the humblest duties are probably the ones who eventually need to be with the pilgrims in the conference room,
setting an example and sharing their spirit. In Galatians 5: 22-26, Paul list characteristics of the Holy Spirit mani-
fested in people’s attitudes and behavior, which he calls the “fruit of the spirit”. The fruit of the spirit consist of
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and goodness.

Bobby E. Jones, Chair of Team Selection

Reminder for all Emmanuel Emmaus Community Members —

The monthly Board Meetings are open to the entire community.

Please feel free to join us!

Volunteer to be on a Music Team or provide Gathering Music

We feel there are many gifted people in our community who are not being utilized because we do not have your
information. The idea is to get a pool of interested people that the Lay Directors can draw from to form Music
Teams, as well as, provide music for other Community Gatherings and events.
If you have served or are interested in serving on a music team for an Emmaus Walk or Community Gathering,
please contact Alan Wacaster.

Page 8 Emmanuel Emmaus June, July, and August 2009

Agape Gifts and Banners

We need a list of what agape gifts you or your group sends to the walk weekends. Please make a list for the Men’s
& Women’s Walks. If you could include a picture that would be great! Also remember that agape that is sent to
camp needs to be in clear plastic bags in amounts of 24 or 50. Also remember to pick-up the left-over agape at
camp at closing—it will be on a table at the dinning hall.

Several of the talk banners are beginning to show signs of wear & tear.
We would like to form a “banner circle” in the same manner that quilting or knitting circles are formed

to repair old and create new banners for our community.

Question about agape or interested in forming a banner circle? Please contact Jill Satterfield.

Candlelight

Set-up of Candlelight begins Saturday at 3:30 pm. We meet at Knob Creek UMC. We have to set-up the electric
luminaries outside and then set-up everything inside. Around 11:00 pm we return and wait on the pilgrims to
finish if they have not already. We then have to clean-up the church and store everything back at camp. Everyone
is welcome to help with this. Just show-up and serve! Please contact Dwin Caldwell if you are interested in
volunteering at 828-244-9684.

Reminder to the community:
The Candlelight Service for the Community starts at 7:30pm, but music may start as early as 7:15pm.

Dining Hall

All are welcome to set-up and clean-up for each meal. Those who are not a sponsor or a close relative of a pilgrim
may serve during the meal. We especially need help cleaning-up after the Saturday evening meal because everyone
is trying to get to Candlelight. If everyone could stay at least 15-20 minutes after the pilgrims have finished and
help clean-up, we could get most of it done. Please remember that serving in the dining hall requires one to serve
quietly and anonymously. If we can serve during the weekend and the pilgrims do not remember us, then we have
done our jobs to serve with love and without recognition as Christ served.

Kitchen

As with the dining hall, all are welcome to prepare for each meal. Work begins Wednesday evening at 5:00 pm
with setting-up the kitchen. Thursday, we begin at 1:00 pm with unloading food & supplies and beginning to pre-
pare food. We usually stop about 4:30 pm to eat supper. If you can help anytime Wednesday or Thursday, please
contact Jackie and let her know what time she can expect you. Of course your help throughout the weekend is still
needed as always, but for this you do not need to contact Jackie—just show-up and serve! We especially need help
on Friday all-day because most people have to work, and Sunday morning beginning at 6:30 am through 3:00 pm
because most people have to be at their church. Can you help-out in the kitchen? Please contact Jackie Smith.

Emmanuel Emmaus June, July, and August 2009 Page 9

Prayer Chapel

The Prayer Chapel is a great place to pray for the pilgrims, team, behind the scenes workers, and any other concern
or praise you may have. There are requests that come in all during the weekend that need our prayers.

God always loves it when we spend time with Him. You are welcome to come and pray at any time during the
walk weekends.

72-Hour Prayer Vigil

The most important way to serve during the walk weekend does not require you to be at camp. You can sign-up
to pray during the 72-Hour Prayer Vigil. You can pray at home, work, church, in your car … wherever you are!
All you need to do is contact Nancy and let her know what 30-minute time slot(s) you would like to pray during.
We especially need to get Thursday evening and Friday filled before the walk weekend begins!!! Please contact
Nancy Clarke to sign-up for the vigil.

Set-up/Take-down

Set-up and Take-down is a very important area to serve. Set-up is done Wednesday at 5:00 pm. The chairs, TV,
DVD, and podium have to be set-up in the conference room. The signs have to be placed at four roads leading to
camp. The kitchen pitchers, bowls, non-perishable food, etc. have to be brought-up from the building, cleaned,
and the kitchen wiped-down.
On Sunday, all of this have to be stored back in its proper place. The kitchen begins that morning and finishes just
before closing. The conference room is taken down around 3:30 pm.
If you can help with Set-up and/or Take-down, please contact Barry Campbell.

Transportation

If you have a CDL with Passenger endorsement, a fun way to serve is to drive the bus to Candlelight for the pil-
grims. You get a glimpse of how much the pilgrims are enjoying the weekend. You will need to be at the camp by
8:45 pm to check the bus, get it started, and be at the conference room at 9:15 pm. You will then need to wait at
the church until they are finished to transport them back to camp. There is also a need at other times during the
walk weekend depending on the weather (i.e., rain).
If you can drive the bus, please contact Barry Campbell.

*** ATTENTION ALL BUS DRIVERS ***

Please send a photo static copy of your drivers license to Barry —
be sure the copy shows your CDL with Passenger endorsement.

Thank you!

Reunion Groups

Your Reunion Group is the most important part of your Fourth Days. Be diligent in joining or organizing a group
AND be faithful in participation. Don’t be afraid to change groups if you do not feel comfortable in the group
you join. Remember this is an accountability—support group! If you are not comfortable and don’t share, how
can you be held accountable and how can others support you?

Below is a list of active Reunion Groups for the Emmanuel Emmaus Community. So, if someone is not
attending a group or would like to change groups, here is the information of what is available in their area.

If your group is not listed or your group’s information is incorrect, please let Janice Kelly know!

SOULfeast 2009—Lake Junaluska, NC (July 12-16)

SOULfeast is truly a spiritual feast for all God’s people who are in search of rest, renewal, and an authentic
experience rooted in the great traditions of the church and the emerging fresh new Christian voices. Some of
the workshops are designed for church leaders, while other workshops are created for persons longing for
personal renewal and a deeper awareness of God’s presence.
As always, SOULfeast continues to be one of the few intergenerational and family retreat weeks still available.
Our participants are all ages, and come from across the country, and across the church. All are welcome.
SOULfeast is a perfect gathering place for Upper Room networks including Walk to Emmaus, Companions in
Christ, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Fellowship of United Methodist Spiritual Directors and Retreat
Leaders (FUMSDRL), among others.

For more information please visit: www.upperroom.org/soulfeast

Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Summer!
