Frederick Douglass Rap
In 1818 a young child was born
From his parents he was torn
His name was Frederick Douglass and you shall see
How he went down in history
Sophia Auld taught him how to read
Which would later help Frederick to break free
She stopped teaching him how to read books
Her husband was giving her disapproving looks
Without a teacher Frederick still read
He had all sorts of knowledge in his head
By the time he was 12 boy was he smart
His plan to escape slavery did start
While working aboard a ship in Maryland
Frederick Douglass figured out a plan
He learned that if you proved you were free
You could leave the state--how cool would that be?
So he boarded a train dressed like a sailor man
Douglass made sure he had the papers in his hand
The conductor came by and gave it a look
Frederick was no longer a slave, his freedom he took
He had to make sure not to get caught
Or else he’d be enslaved again; he’d be bought
But Frederick was lucky, he made it out
“I am free!” he wanted to shout
When he was freed he helped women fight
On civil rights he thought he’d shed some light
Later in life he wrote his own book
Go to your library and give it a look
He started a newspaper called the North Star
His passion for reading had taken him far
The Underground Railroad is something that he used
To help keep slaves from becoming abused
Abraham Lincoln and Douglass were friends
To each other they’d always lend a hand
Lincoln wrote something to free all slaves
This would change the world in all sorts of ways
Frederick is a hero because he fought back
Although a proper education he did lack
He never gave up and always stood tall
He’s a hero for many reasons, and a hero never falls
