1.0 INTRODUCTION
As we are all living in technology era, Internet is an important thing in our life. It is very difficult
to write even a simple essay without using web resources or offline media. The Internet is just at
our finger tips. Thus, very often there is no need to leave the comfort of your home in order to
find necessary information. The Internet makes life easier, and this statement is certainly true
with the academic world. Writing tasks are very common in high schools, colleges and
universities. Thus, students are in a constant need of reliable sources of information. Academic
databases are perhaps the best places to look for academic information. Sure thing, traditional
web search can also yield positive results, but imagine databases that contain only academic
papers and other relevant information. A thorough search in academic databases will most
certainly end up with success.
For an example, Perpustakaan Abdul Razak (PTAR) has been subscribing many online
databases to facilitate students and academician to explore carious reference material which may
enhance knowledge and research study result. Each online database has its own characteristics.
Let’s give brief overview popular academic online databases and their features.

Searching Techniques
Searching technique is a technique that user can apply in order to find or search information
needed. There is many search techniques such as, Boolean or known as Keyword, Truncation,
Wildcard, Advance Search, Subject, Accuracy and Other Features
2.2 Search Techniques Used By Emerald Online Database
Boolean Search
Figure 5: Emerald Management Online Database Site – the Boolean searching
Emerald databases offer a Keyword or Boolean Search to retrieve information. This search
technique allows you to retrieve all records from a database containing a particular word or a
combination of words. Boolean searches allow us to combine words and phrases using the words
and, or, not to limit, widen, or define our search.
My hands-on towards Emerald using Boolean operators in a search query, generates
results that are more specific to our needs. For example, the query "Library AND Skills AND
Information Centre" will retrieve only documents containing all three words. On the other hand,
"Library OR Skills OR Information Centre" will broaden the search, retrieving all documents
with one or more of these words. The query "Library AND Skills NOT Information Centre" will
retrieve all results containing both Librarian and Skills but documents that contain the word
information Centre will be excluded.

Truncation
Figure 6: Emerald Management Online Database Site – the Truncation searching

The query "Financ*" will retrieve all results containing Finance, Financing and Financial.
Wildcard

and trusted online database. Google Scholar can provide some overall references for your paper.

you will need to evaluate each one. Yes, you can get FOC journals from Google, but bear in
mind, online databases such Emerald consists a periodical that is written by scholars to share
research and discuss important topics of a field. Many scholarly journals are also peer reviewed
or refereed, which means that the articles within them have undergone a strict review from

Background Of Taylor & Francis
For more than two centuries Taylor & Francis has been fully committed to the publication of
scholarly information of the highest quality, and this remains our primary goal today. The
foundations of our company were laid in pioneering fashion when in 1798 Richard Taylor
launched the Philosophical Magazine, one of the first scientific journals produced by an
independent company. It was the start of many subsequent close collaborations with scholarly
societies. Dr. William Francis, a chemist, joined Richard Taylor in 1852 and continued the
tradition of the close links between the academic community and the company.
In 1936 Taylor & Francis became a private limited company with leading scientists as directors
and shareholders. The last two decades have seen the most dramatic and rapid growth with the
setting up of publishing and distribution centers around the world. This growth, fuelled by
significant and strategic acquisition, led to a successful flotation of the Group on the London
Stock Exchange in 1998. Shortly after the flotation, the Group more than doubled in size with the
acquisition of the Routledge Group of companies.
In 2004 Taylor & Francis merged with Informa, and in 2005 consolidated its imprints. This led
to such imprints as Carfax, Frank Cass, Marcel Dekker, Spon Press, Swets & Zeitlinger
Publishers, amongst others, being incorporated into the CRC Press, Routledge or Taylor &
Francis brands.

4.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusions, the library is one of the sources of information. To get the right
information, it requires a database in the library such as online public access centre (OPAC).
There are many online database subscribed by UiTM. This is included online database like
Emerald Premium and Taylor & Francis (Geography Archives). These systems needed to
facilitate our work to search articles and the books available in the library. For example in our
research, Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR) used OPAC to search the articles related to
our subject. All of these systems have their own benefits to each of their audiences. This matter
will help in developing the ideas and innovation in making new article. People can learn the new
skills and technologies and becomes an analytically thinker based on the good library skills that
applied in their daily life. Frankly, online database are designed to serve the needs of students in
finding article related to their subject with accurate information. Their collections were designed
to supplement the basic curriculum towards them.
