Editorial....
Rtn. Kawaljit Kaur
Editor 2021-22
“What I never imagined is how incredibly full
My heart would be today, as I finally pen this”
It seems like yesterday that we were welcoming 2021 and half of the year has already
passed! Yes, time flies. But we can choose to be the pilots and navigate our energies to fill
every day with the spirit of service that is part of every Rotarian’s DNA. And as the new
Rotary year begins in July we are ready to “SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES”.
This year has changed me. And I know it’s changed you, too. We head into the 21-22
Rotary year as new Rotarians, ready to take on any opportunities. I have been amazed
every day by ingenuity and dedication I see from Rotarians. But even more I’ve been
astonished at how our kindness has always shown so brightly.
My experience as a Rotarian has shown me that I, too, have so much still to learn about
life. And I learned these lessons from Rotary. I learned what perseverance really looks
like. I learned what kindness really means and I learned what service truly is – it’s giving
when you have nothing. It’s finding something in you to be of service to another. No
matter how hard your own life is. Because no matter how hard our circumstances,
Rotarians know there is always someone whose circumstances are direr. There is always
someone who needs us. And we, Rotarians have shown what it means to show up, truly,
when everything is at stake.
I’m humbled as an editor of the Rotary Club of Rourkela Queens.
I thank you profusely for the honour.
Sincerely,
Kawaljit Kaur

Shekhar Mehta
Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, is the President
Elect of Rotary International for 2021-22.
Mehta acknowledges that current membership trends are a challenge and says that
membership development should be Rotary’s highest priority. He believes that focusing on
regional plans, successfully transitioning Rotaractors into Rotary clubs, and increasing diversity
and female members could yield a 5 percent net growth in membership each year.
“A major brainstorming is needed to find effective solutions suited to different areas of the
world,” says Mehta. He adds that regional ethos and culture have to be taken into account to find
localized solutions, as “one size does not fit all.” He believes Rotary can extend to new
geographical areas and countries.
Mehta says Rotary needs to become more contemporary and adaptable by focusing on
partnerships with governments and corporations, expanding partnerships with organizations
that specialize in Rotary’s areas of focus, and investing in technology.
Mehta, an accountant, is chair of the Skyline Group, a real estate development company he
founded. He is also a director of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based
organization.
Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of ShelterBox, UK. After
the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the
disaster.
Mehta pioneered a program that has performed more than 1,500 life-changing heart surgeries
in South Asia. He is also the architect of the TEACH Program, which promotes literacy
throughout India and has reached thousands of schools.
A Rotary member since 1984, Mehta has served Rotary as director, member or chair of several
committees, zone coordinator, training leader, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of
Technical Advisers, and district governor. He is also the chair of Rotary Foundation (India).
Mehta has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for
Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Awards.
He and his wife, Rashi, are Major Donors and members of the Bequest Society.

Message from our R.I. President....
Shekhar Mehta
I wish each of you and your families a great Rotary New Year! Together, let us make it the
best year of our lives, by making it a year to grow more and do more. Let this be a year of
changemakers, and let us begin with our membership.
That is precisely why the Each One, Bring One initiative is so important. During this year, I
urge you to dream of new ways in which Rotary can expand its reach into your
community and therefore the world. If each member introduces one person to Rotary,
our membership can increase to 1.3 million by July 2022. So, let's just do it!
Imagine the change we, as Rotary members, can make when there are so many more of
us! More people to care for others, more people to Serve to Change Lives. Think of the
impact we can have through grow more, do more. More members will enable us to
embark on bigger and bolder service projects. And each of us can also continue to serve
in our own personal ways, responding to needs in our communities.
The beauty of Rotary is that service means different things to different people around
the world. One element, however, that we can incorporate into all of our service
initiatives is empowering girls. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, girls and young
women face disproportionate challenges all over the world. We have the power to lead
the charge for gender equality. Empowering girls and young women to have greater
access to education, better health care, more employment, and equality in all walks of
life should be embedded in every Rotary project we launch. Girls are future leaders, so
we must ensure that we help them shape their future.
“The biggest gift we are given
Is the power to touch a life,
To change, to make a difference
In the circle of life.
If we can reach out
With our hand, heart, and soul,
The magic will start to happen
As the wheel begins to roll.
Let's turn the wheel together
So all humanity thrives,
We have the power and the magic
To Serve to Change Lives.”
7
These are challenging times, and I compliment each of your efforts in grappling with
COVID-19. No challenge is too big for Rotarians. The bigger the challenge, the more
passionate the Rotarian. Look at what we can do when we take on a colossal challenge
such as eradicating polio. Look at the millions of lives we improve by strengthening
access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. Look at what we do every year to promote
peace in places where it seems unimaginable. Our basic education and literacy programs
have nation-building impact.
This year, let us challenge ourselves to do more such projects and programs that have
national reach and impact. This year, let us Serve to Change Lives.

R.I. Theme 2021-22 : Serve to Change Lives...
RI President Sekhar Mehta revealed the 2021-22 presidential
theme Serve to change lives, to incoming District Governor on
February 1 during the Rotary International Assembly which was
held Virtually because of covid-19 pandemic.
Mehta spoke about how participating in service Projects through
Rotary changed him as a person and made him emphasize more
with the need of others. Soon after joining his club, he helped carry
out projects that benefited rural communities in India.
Some of the poor conditions he saw in those communities
strengthened his commitment to service. Mehta participated in initiatives that brought artificial
Limbs to children, clean water and sanitation to homes and better Healthcare facilities to the
communities.
"Rotary kindled the Spark within me to look beyond myself and embrace humanity" he said
"Service became a way of life for my and I like many others, adopted the guiding philosophy that
"Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this
earth"
Mehta encouraged Dist. Governors to lead by example during their term and inspire Rotary and
Rotaract members to participate in the projects that have a measurable and sustainable impact.
He is asking each club to conduct a Rotary day of service.
"At the end of your term a District Governor, you should feel that because of your leadership and
because of your inspiration Rotarians and Rotractors, the world has changed for the better
because of service done by them during the year" he said.
Focusing on diversity, membership for the year 2021-22, Mehta want members to focus their
efforts on empowering girls and ensuring their access to education, resources, services, and
opportunities so that future generation of woman leader will have the tools they need to succeed.
Mehta asked member to use Rotary's belief that diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical in all we
do as a compass to guide this work.
"There are many issues that girl face in different parts of the world, and you as a leader will ensure
that we try and mitigate the disadvantage of the girl that they may have." he said
To be able to do more through service, Rotary needs to increase membership Mehta said.
Membership has hovered around 1.2 million for the past two decades. He challenged the
incoming Governor to be the catalyst in their district to help increase membership to 1.3 million by
July 1 2022. Mehta's Each One, Bring One initiative asks every member to bring one person to join
Rotary within the next 17 months.
Increasing membership while also continuing our commitment to eradication polio, fighting
COVID-19, and serving our communities is an ambitious goal. "And that should excite you." Mehta
said "Rotarians love challenges".

Message from our Assistant Governor...
Rtn. Vikash Golchha
Asst. Governor 2021-22
My Dear Fellow Rotarians,
The beginning of every Rotary year is an exciting time. There is a new leadership right
from the club level upto the new RI President. It is a proud moment for all of us since the
new RI President is from our own country.
This year will be special in more ways than one. International President Shekhar Mehta
has always thought big and set a target to increase the international membership from
1.2 million to 1.3 million in a year. The beauty of this mission is that it involves each and
every Rotarian with the 'Each One Bring One' slogan. Lets all rise to the occasion and
make both Rotary & Bharat proud.
The adjective I would like to use for the work done by Rourkela Queens in past year is
'brave & ingenious' rather than the usual 'fantastic or great'. It takes a lot of courage and
intelligence to come up with ideas like food delivery to covid affected families, installing
plastic curtains in autos between driver and passenger and many more. What you have
done in these difficult times & exactly when it was needed, is indeed commendable.
I am very confident that the new team led by Rtn Rashmi Agarwal will set the bar even
higher and make it a Queens tradition. It is also my pleasure to be the AG of a club that
was sponsored by my home club and where I personally know so many members. I will
be here to learn & have fun and not just be the Governors representative of this vibrant
club.
I wish you all the very best for a memorable year ahead.
Jai Hind. Jai Rotary

Message from our President...
Rtn. Rashmi Agrawal
President 2021-22
Dear friends in Rotary
We all are passing through the most challenging times of our lives. But we as human beings have
the ability to convert challenges into opportunities.
I, got an opportunity to lead the club in this pandemic and I will try to do my best. As Rotary says
"Service above self", so in these trying times we will serve people affected by Pandemic and
beyond.
Rotary theme of the year is " Serve to change lives". Let us come together as a team to serve
people the way our predecessors have done. Let each one of us come forward and give the
maximum to society.
Our RI President Shekhar Mehta said " Grow more and do more ". We plan to do more projects
and grow by adding members, sponsoring a New Club, Satellite Club, RCC, Rotaract Club etc. I
am committed to lead the club for Women Empowerment, Water and Sanitation, Environment,
Health programs, Literacy, Disaster Management. We will mentor local entrepreneurs to help in
inclusive economic growth and support education projects.
I certainly recognize that there is a huge wealth of wisdom in this club, in the form of longer
serving members and newer ones, and I seek each ones feedback and ideas to enhance team
involvement in our club. One of the wisest things I have ever been told is that one should seek to
understand rather than strive to be understood. I hope to abide by this during the year so that I
can fully benefit from your opinions, your goals, your values, and your aspirations for the club.
I congratulate our editor Kawaljit Kaur for our magazine, "Pehchaan" which means recognition.
The Rotary Club of Rourkela Queens is a passionate advocate for the full participation of women
joined together to change lives. I admire you, I salute you, I am with you. Rotary has given us
recognition and I wish that all our members become good Rotarians and help society. So let us
"Serve to Change Lives".

and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST : The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND : High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful
occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD : The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH : The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world
fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

This is Rotary...
Dear Rotarians,
Rotary is an invitation to endless opportunities. We believe in creating opportunities for
others and ourselves. Our act of service large or small generate goodwill, better
understanding and meaningful life in the communities where we operate.
Government and Instutitions world wide are gaining better appreciatation for the type
of work rotarians are doing. People are now eager to collaborate and embrace the
values of Rotary.
Younger generations can play a meaningful role in our organisation. They can make a
bigger impact forming different types of connections to serve the community.
The pandemic (COVID 19) has forced all of us to adapt a new action plan in service to the
community. We need to change dramatically, if we are to face the challenges of the new
normal age, and provide all that the world so desperately needs.
Every great challenge is an opportunity for renewal and growth, the world needs Rotary
now more than ever. We have elevated Rotary and let us ensure “Serve to change lives..”

Early Morning Mission...
I have spent almost my entire life till now (except for four years when I studied in a
college in Rajasthan) in eastern India, namely West Bengal and Orissa. All along I have
been an early riser. During my growing up years I had the good fortune of living in a house
surrounded by a garden that had a lot of flowering plants and many big flowering trees.
These big trees were near the boundary that separated the house from the road and
adjacent houses. The house I live in now also has some rose plants and we do plant
seasonal flowers. During my college vacations I used to go for long morning walks with
my father. I have been fairly regular in my morning walks during the past few years too.
If you are wondering why am I sharing these insignificant and personal details, well let
me come to the point.
During the wee hours in the morning, from my verandah, I have been a witness of a very
peculiar contradiction. I have seen god fearing men and women (and sometimes
children obviously on their parents instructions) pluck flowers from the big flowering
trees adjacent to the wall of my own house and also other houses. Sometimes they had
the audacity to walk right into the garden to pluck mogra, hibiscus, roses and marigolds.
They would walk in stealthily thinking no one was awake as yet and even if someone
happened to see them it was only for offering to god. Their demeanour almost made the
house owner feel as if he was the trespasser.
During my walks with my father and even today, I see people, mostly women, pluck
flowers from roadside trees and from other peoples' gardens. They rise on their toes,
climb walls, and most of the times walk around with an ingenious contraption that helps
pluck flowers that are beyond their human reach. At times I fear they will topple over or
hurt themselves but they go about their sacred duty oblivious of the danger they put
themselves in and of the immorality of their act.
I find it really strange - starting the day with an act of theft? But I suppose they never see
it in that light. All that their ritualistic minds know and believe is that their daily worship
will be incomplete without the offering of flowers of all hues and colours, even if they are
plucked without permission of the rightful owners. To my utter surprise, some of them
have flowers in their own small gardens or growing in pots in their balcony but they
would rather not pluck them as bare plants look bad. Who knows they may even think
that they are indirectly helping the rightful owners of the yellow, red and pink flowers by
compelling them to forego the flowers for offering to god. If any house owner ever
happens to reprimand a neighbour or a passer by for plucking flowers without asking (as
my father often used to) it is considered sacrilegious and is shared with other fellow
27
flower stealers with a lot of indignation.
To take something that does not belong to you without the owner's permission is wrong,
no matter what the objective is or how petty the thing is in terms of value. But for our
pious and overtly religious public, it is self condoned as righteous.
But this early morning mission is not all in vain. It ensures that they compete with the
cock, catch the early morning sun, get some fresh air and walk around a few lanes.
My only suggestion to them - in your religious zeal, please be careful not to break a bone
along with a flower laden branch!! And in case someone with normal standards of
integrity dares question your holy act, please do not be offended

The Ray Of Life ...
Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red are the colours of a rainbow and the
colours which painted a life of a fourteen-year-old girl. A teen with golden curly locks,
deep ocean eyes, and she was fair, fairer than that word, but was unlucky enough. Her
name was Ashley. She was a daughter and a sister. Her life was not like a normal child's
because she was suffering from a severe disease of sarcoma and had bronchial asthma
too. Her parents took her place to place for her medications for many years but towards
the end, they had no hope. The doctors told the parents that she may survive for few
weeks as she was very weak and sensitive. Being medically ill she couldn't go to school,
camps, hang out with friends like a teen child do but, a part of her always wanted to be a
child who is as free as a bird who flies up to the sky, has no boundaries, leaps on the back
of the wind, a bird who is not caged.
One bright day it was a regular morning, Ashley woke up from her bed and got ready for
breakfast. She came out and walked to her brother's room. He was getting ready for
school. Both of them went downstairs to have their breakfast. The table was covered
with beautiful china and at the centre, their mother brought a tray full of delicious
pancakes with the topping of sweet maple syrup. Both the children had their breakfast
and then her brother, Sam headed for his school.
''What are you going to do now Ashley?'' mother asked her. ''Drawing'' she replied. And
then she went back to her room. Ashley was a very creative child. She decorated her
whole room with drawings of rainbows. During the day she used to draw nothing but a
rainbow. When the dusk fell, her dad came back home with a new appliance for Ashley.
It was a ringer bell for her room in case of emergency. The parents knew that their
daughter didn't have many days left but they did everything that they could do for her
survival. The family had their dinner and went back to their room. Darkness was
gathering and it was getting bitter cold so Ashley thought of wearing something warm.
Despite she wasn't allowed to lock the door, but having thought of changing her clothes
she locked and then went to bed. At that miserable midnight suddenly, Ashley got an
Asthma attack, she couldn't breathe, she couldn't scream because of her
breathlessness. She tried dragging herself towards the ringer, fell off the bed, kept
dragging but the poor child failed.
The next morning it was raining, the trees made an eerie sound. Mother went towards
Ashley's room to wake her up when she found that the door was locked. She peeped
through the small hole at the door and saw her daughter lying on the floor. ''Ashley!
29
Ashley! Open the door!'', she screamed. She ran and called her father and brother. They
both pushed and broke the door open. There Ashley lied on the floor of her room
decorated of rainbows with rosy cheeks, terrified wide-open eyes, pointing finger
towards the bell, dead- frozen to death on the last bitterly cold night.
Although the family was prepared for this day but, at that time no preparation worked.
The mother held her child and a drop of tear rolled on her cheeks and she wept. Sam,
her mother, her father drowned in sorrow. After some time, her mother pulled herself
together, stood up, and walked towards the window. Wiping her tears, she looked up to
the showery sky and said, ''Are you okay up there Ashley?''. And suddenly the rain
slowed clearing the sky and there appeared the seven-coloured ray of life, a rainbow.
