RID 3261 2020-21 GOVERNOR’s MONTHLY LETTER ISSUE : 8

Dear MISAL Rotarians,

Greetings from the First lady Arati, and me. I do hope that you have had a great beginning of the year 2021 , seeing signs of
tranquility after almost 9 months of turmoil. My wishes continue for each one of you of being happy, healthy, prosperous and
peaceful throughout the year 2021.

Penning the GML always reinvigorates me and I get reconnected with you.

The month began with a bang , when we had the first physical meet of the year , on the 3rd. Jan 2021, the occasion was momentous
because we felicitated the first AKS member PP Rtn D R Patnaik & DGND Rtn. Manjit Singh Arora along with two new Major Donors
PP Dr. B. Joshi and PP Rtn. Sanjay Purohit.

January 2021 has ushered in Happiness and an Open scenario, with more enthusiasm and more positive vibes around. COVID 19 is
waning out , the number of cases is on the down slide , the number of positive cases have also seen a drastic reduction, the markets
have begun to open and are now bubbling with more activity. Travel with the restrictions reduced has become easier and freer but
with safety regulations.

Actions speak louder than Words and Rotarians are People of Action. Keeping in the same spirit ,
there were many laudable activities conducted during the month , like the Cyclothon by Bilaspur
Queens ,Felicitating frontline covid warriers by Rourkela Queens, Dry food and Blanket distribution
by many clubs, Republic Day celebrations and an energetic enthused COVID vaccination drive
supported by many clubs, which needs a special mention. The NID Polio vaccination on 31st Jan
2021, also was a major activity like ever.

It is worthwhile to mention that the Digital platform gave many of you an insight
into the activities of the Rotary Institute, which went Virtual this year. The
Institute which is usually for the past, present and future RI officials, this year was
opened for all Rotarians also. It gave all those who participated an opportunity of
listening to Speakers of International repute like Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla ,
Gaur Gopal Das ,Shashi Tharoor , Kiran Majumdar Shaw and personalities from
the Industry , Motivational speakers , Management gurus etc.

Since November, witnessing the upswing performance of the Clubs, my official visits have
also been on the rise. I have since then visited many clubs as also quite a few clubs in during
the month, I am indeed enthused with the all-round activity that I have seen. My visits will
be on the rise in days to come, when I will visit more clubs.

All in all, January 2021 , the first month of the year , in one line , has passed off successfully,
so friends as....

The biggest source of Motivation are your own thoughts,

so think big and motivate yourself to do big.

Happy Action and Happy Rotaring.

R.I. Presidents Message

In Rotary, 23 February is our anniversary, and February is also the month
when we focus on promoting peace. There is a reason for this:
Contributing to peace and international understanding has been a high
priority for us since our earliest days.

We are often asked: “How can we get involved in peace now?” There are
many paths to peace in Rotary. Our youth programs point us in the
direction of Positive Peace, as does the work of intercountry
committees and the Rotary Action Group for Peace.

Another path is the Rotarian Peace Projects Incubator (RPPI), an
inspirational collaboration among Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Rotary
Peace Fellows and alumni. Led by Rotarians in Switzerland and
Liechtenstein, RPPI has designed 48 global projects that any club can
support, either directly or through Rotary Foundation global grants. Nino Lotishvili and Matthew Johnsen, alumni of the
Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, are two of the many volunteers.

During my Rotary peace journey, I have learned how personal resilience helps build inner peace and create sustainable
outer peace. This was the inspiration behind the Women Peace Ambassadors for the South Caucasus project, which is based
on my field research in Georgia. The RPPI team of Rotarians and peace fellows recognized the incredible potential of women
from mixed-ethnicity families who live on borderlands to be role models for peace within and beyond their communities.
Through workshops on building inner and outer peace that draw on the power of storytelling, 40 participants will be sharing
their stories and reaching around 400 extended family and community members. These inspiring but marginalized women
will reclaim their inner strength as peacebuilders at the grassroots level. In this way, we will take steps toward the
sustainable, peaceful society we need so much, not only in our region, but throughout the world. — Nino Lotishvili

I was excited to join the peace incubator project and to further strengthen my ties with Rotary’s peace community by
working with past and current peace fellows to develop these proposals. My team wrote five proposals — three in
Bangladesh, one in Iraq, and one in Poland — that focus on the arts and on education to generate dialogue across religious
divisions and avert the radicalization of young people. I was inspired by how, despite the pandemic, we came together via
technology with a vision to develop, test, and strengthen ideas and to produce workable solutions that clubs across the
world can support to advance peace. I am excited to work with Rotary’s peace
community to transform these visions into reality. — Matthew Johnsen

Here is further proof that in Rotary, we prefer action to words. This is Rotary at its
best. I encourage you to visit https://www.rppi.ch/ to explore the projects and
support them.

We have lasted 116 years because of our strong ethics, our passion for Service
Above Self, and our unique approach to problem-solving. One of our greatest
strengths is how we reach across our communities and across national, ethnic,
religious, and political divisions to unite people of all backgrounds and to help
others. This month, let’s celebrate our history and the many ways that Rotary
Opens Opportunities to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace, our
ultimate mission.

Trustee Chair's Message

All of this good work awaits us, as does the work of supporting
newborns, cleaning water sources, recovering from the
COVID-19 pandemic, and countless other efforts we lead.

I am proud to say that many Rotary members climb to the top
of Maimonides’ ladder. Many of them do so anonymously.
Whoever they are and for whatever reason they share their
gifts with the Foundation, I thank them.

As an organization, Rotary climbs that ladder as well. Every

one of your donations helps us reach higher levels. As we

climb this ladder as one, we gain a wider perspective. We see

Giving is more than an activity. It is a way of life and a beacon all those who need to be uplifted as well as the countless
in the search for hope in troubled times. There is great turmoil opportunities we have to help them in Rotary. And as we do
today, but these are not unusual times, not in the span of so, we find our own meaning and purpose.

human history. The wisdom of the ages is especially K.R. Ravindran
important to help us set our path and purpose.

Trustee Chair 2020-21
Such wisdom comes from the 12th-century philosopher

known as Maimonides. Born in Córdoba, Spain, he and his The Rotary Foundation Expenditures: $362 million
family went into exile in Morocco to escape religious for the Rotary Year 2019-20
persecution. As a young man, he mastered Aristotle,

astronomy, and later medicine. After moving to Cairo,

Maimonides became known as the city’s greatest rabbi,

producing tomes of commentary on the Torah, and he lived

out his final days as a renowned doctor.

But his greatest gift to humanity captured his thoughts about
giving itself. His Eight Levels of Charity is a masterpiece that
teaches us about what giving means and what motivates us to
do it.

The bottom rung of Maimonides’ ladder is giving out of pity or
grudgingly. The next step up is giving less than one should, but
doing so cheerfully. Climb up to the fifth rung and you are
giving before being asked. Further up the ladder is giving in a
way that the receiver does not know who the giver is. The
eighth and highest level of charity is to anticipate distress and
giving to avoid or prevent it.

When we immunize children against polio, we are
anticipating potential illness. We do so with other efforts,
such as Rotary projects that reduce the incidence of malaria
or cervical cancer.

When we teach someone a profession that enables them to
earn a living, we apply the eighth step. From microfinance to
education, The Rotary Foundation helps us give the gift of
self-reliance.

Rotary Success Story

Help on Wheels

Maternal health projects give Rotary clubs in Uganda a sense of purpose during COVID-19 restrictions - Claire Zulkey

“This is a hospital that is overwhelmed by mothers who come to give
birth, but the facilities are very poor,” Mwesigwa says.

In addition to its work helping mothers and children, the Rubaga club has
donated soap, hand sanitizer, and small water tanks for hand washing to
local hospitals. Water is scarce at Ugandan hospitals, and there is little
government aid to pay for additional supplies, so many Rotary clubs have
donated water tanks, masks, gloves, sanitizers, soap, and other items.

The Rubaga club also donated goods and money for those without food.

During the lockdown, Mwesigwa explained, many people didn’t have
enough to eat, even if they had work. “One teacher was feeding her
children on peelings.”

In March, the Ugandan government moved rapidly to confront the Rubaga is one of many Rotary clubs in Uganda that are working to

hardships on pregnant women unable to reach a hospital due to the
travel restrictions. Reuters reported that one woman in Kampala Rotary History
struggled for 90 minutes to reach a hospital a mile and a half (about 2.4
km) away. Both she and the baby died. In addition, the Women’s
Probono Initiative, an advocacy group, reported cases of six other
women and two babies dying during the lockdown.

When the Rotary Club of Rubaga, Kampala, heard of the reports, they
knew they had to act to provide a safe transport option. The club
donated an ambulance to provide medical transport to residents of
Kikajjo, about a 40-minute drive southwest of Kampala. Betty
Mwesigwa, the club’s immediate past president, says Kikajjo has densely
populated, lower-income areas.

“The problem during the COVID-19 epidemic is that mothers were failing
to make it to maternal centers during the lockdown,” she says.

“When we heard of two cases of mothers who had
delivered beside the road, we decided to donate an

ambulance to them.”

One Rotarian who works in the tour and travel industry had a vehicle that
could easily be retrofitted into an ambulance. The club raised the money
for the updates and a driver, as well as masks for the passengers.

The ambulance provided more than 75 rides to women in need of care
during the lockdown. In September, most of the travel restrictions were
lifted, but Ugandans were continuing to be encouraged to limit travel, as
cases approached 10,000 and 96 deaths.

Italian Rotarians screen homeless for COVID-19

Italian Rotary members through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Palermo,
the Associazione Francesca Morvillo, and Karol Strutture Sanitarie, launched a
screening campaign to help stop the spread of COVID-19 among the homeless
population of the City of Palermo. It is part of the ongoing efforts of Italian Rotarians
to use their skills and connections to counter this pandemic.

Volunteers of the Morvillo Association who usually take turns in the distribution of
meals and care packages to the homeless, went to the locations where those
packages are typically passed out. Serology rapid tests were conducted on samples
of capillary blood (a drop obtained by pricking the fingertip) collected from
homeless individuals. The samples, taken on a voluntary basis by a health worker
operating out of a camper provided by the Morvillo Association, helped identify individuals infected with the virus.

Rotary Club of Palermo president Vincenzo Autolitano explained the purpose of the project is to identify COVID positive individuals for the
protection of the homeless and volunteers who serve them. He also thanked Karol Strutture Sanitarie for embracing the project and
providing the health workers and tests needed for the screening.

The President of the Morvillo Association, Giancarlo Grassi, also expressed his appreciation for the attention shown in this time of health
emergency to volunteers and the marginalized.

Rotary Peace Fellow sheds light on minorities in Japan - Farrah Hasnain

My aim is to change my students' perception of the U.S. There is a hegemony of
whiteness in English language teaching, and I want to represent how diverse and
multifaceted the American identity truly is.”

After moving to my Japanese hometown, Hamamatsu, which has one of the largest
immigrant populations in Japan. As of 2018, there are approximately 9,200 Brazilian
residents. Other residents hail from Peru, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines,
and are migrant workers. I learned that Japan had a long history of migration
between Brazil and Peru, dating back to as early as 1873. However, although many of
my students and friends carried rich multicultural identities, they often saw their
non-Japanese roots as a hindrance instead of an advantage. Some of my students
would hide their mixed heritage if they physically passed as Japanese, and most of my returnee and bilingual/trilingual students would
downplay their English proficiency to avoid standing out.

I wanted to find a way to bridge the gap between who they were and what their communities pressured them to be, and I was able to start
this conversation with them. Instead of assigning academic papers or chapter books that only held text alone, I showed them Hafu, a
documentary that followed five families navigating the intricacies of their mixed-race identities in a Japanese context. Hearing the voices
and seeing the faces of intercultural families can help students realize how real and relevant minority experiences are.

This film also led me to discover the existence of the Rotary Peace Fellowship. Megumi Nishikura, one of
the directors of the film, talked about her experience as a peace fellow and how it inspired her to create a
documentary based on her personal experiences, which were elusive to find at the time. As I listened to
her walk the audience through her trials and revelations as a hafu (a mixed race person in Japan), I felt
deeply inclined to help the minority communities that have shown me how diverse and complex the
Japanese diaspora truly is.

I personally knew many people from these communities, and they would share their stories of reconciling Farrah Hasnain
their identities with me. In Hamamatsu, many people would often assume that I was Brazilian or Peruvian
Nikkei (a Japanese emigrant), and would treat me better when I revealed that I was actually American. I 9
wanted to shine a light on a little-researched topic that deserves representation in academia: the
experiences of the Brazilian Nikkei and their children (Sansei – third generation emigrants), who are now
in their early 20s.

Today you are taking a very important step in your journey of service and leadership. The forthcoming 17 months
will be the most amazing, fruitful months in your life. You can turn
this period into the most satisfying period of your life. During this
period, I urge you to dream big, guided by our shared vision for
Rotary. You will plan and set goals, inspire and motivate Rotarians to
reach goals — goals to expand the reach of our organization by
increasing membership, and goals to increase the impact of Rotary
by serving the world. And in this journey, you will play a stellar role as
you share your goals with Rotarians and Rotaractors in your district
and inspire them to "do more and grow more." Friends, this will be
our guiding mantra. "Do more" as in bigger and impactful service

projects, and "grow more" as in increasing our membership and expanding the participation.

Membership, friends, continues to be our biggest challenge. For the last 17-plus years, our membership has been at
1.2 million. Together let us change that over the next 17 months. My dear change-maker governors, here is your opportunity to make the biggest change
in Rotary history as far as membership is concerned. What we have not accomplished in the last 17 years, I challenge you to accomplish in 17 months.

But that's too big a dream, you may say. Well, if I ask you to dream big, I have to lead from the front. One of my inspirations comes from what George
Bernard Shaw said. He said, "You see things; and you say 'why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?' "

So, friends, the dream is to increase our membership to 1.3 million by 1 July 2022! How can we reach that incredible goal? The answer is each one, bring
one — ask each Rotarian to bring one member to Rotary in the next 17 months. Just one member in 17 months is all you need to ask of every Rotarian in
your district. You can ensure this by leading by example and having your club presidents lead by example as well. As Rotarians in every club do this, they
too will become change-makers, as they will change for good the lives of each person that they make a Rotarian.

Governors-elect, we need to grow more to do more. I have always hugely been inspired by the motto of Rotary — Service Above Self. It has taught me to
care for others and share with others. Service, to me, is about thinking of others even before I think of myself. On thinking about others, let me share one
of my Rotary moments.

I had just joined my Rotary club, and the club organized a limb camp. Here we were, distributing calipers, artificial limbs, and hand cycles. Every member
was given some responsibility and so was I. I was to check if the beneficiary of the hand cycle had enough strength in his hand to ride the tricycle by his
hands. And I was to do this by asking the beneficiary to pull my hand, so that I could fathom the strength in his hands. As I stood in my designated spot,
waiting for the beneficiary to come, I saw him crawling towards me. He had no legs, so he had to crawl towards me. I stretched my hands to hold his, and
I'll be honest, in that moment, I was thinking about me and not about him. I was thinking about my cleanliness, my health. I did not want to hold his hand.
But I did it and kept thinking of myself for the second and third set of hands. But suddenly after the sixth, seventh set of hands, my empathy towards their
plight grew and soon enough I could feel their pain, their challenges, and I was thinking more about them than I was thinking of myself. It was at that
moment, friends, when from being just a member of my Rotary club, I became a Rotarian.

Soon I started attending more club projects. As a Rotarian, when I had first gone out to the rural areas of India 35 years back, I truly understood the plight
of my brethren. They had no toilets in their homes, the water they drank was from the same pond that they bathed in, the schools were in the shade of a
tree, and the black painted wall was the only blackboard in the school. The nearest health center was a few miles away with basic facilities. And then,
through my Rotary club, we helped set up toilets, provided clean drinking water, enhanced the education system, and set up world-class health facilities,
not just in my community or my city, but in my country.

Rotary kindled the spark within me to look beyond myself and embrace humanity. Service became a way
of life for me, and my life's guiding philosophy became, "Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on
this earth." And I want to be a good tenant of this earth. I am sure each of you also has found your
opportunity to serve. You too may have provided eyesight to the blind, food to the hungry, homes to the
homeless. They may have been small opportunities for service or large projects. More than just the size, it
is the attitude that defines service.

Gandhi was once getting up on a train. Even as he was getting up on the train, the train started moving,
and one of his slippers fell off. Gandhi's immediate reaction was to throw his other slipper to where the
previous one had fallen. His friend was traveling with him and asked him, "Why did you do that?" Gandhi
said, "Someone will find that slipper. What good will be one slipper to him? So I threw the other." Friends,
it was a small act of service, but I think it was a big attitude of service. Are we also ready to think of others before we think of ourselves? As Rotarians, we
can do just that.

Why else have Rotarians spent billions of dollars and volunteer hours over the last 35-plus years to eradicate polio and serve mankind? Why else have we
set up thousands of schools, hundreds of hospitals, provided water in parched villages, brought dignity to people by providing toilets in their homes,
given the gift of life to tens of thousands of children by doing their heart surgeries? Rotarians keep serving because we want to change lives. One project
in Nepal changes the lives of a few thousand people, the family health program in Africa has served millions of people, a water project in Haiti has

Theme 2021-22

presenting the RI Theme for the RY 2021-22

changed the lives of more than 10 million people. Back home in India, the T-E-A-C-H program of literacy
and education has impacted the lives of millions of children.

Many of you have been an important part of similar service projects, and you have changed the lives of
people. There was a need to serve, and you served. Today the need to serve has become even more
necessary and apparent. So, my dear change-maker governors, in the coming Rotary year, I request you,
urge you, cajole you to serve people and help to change their lives. So, my dear governors, our theme for
the year 2021-22 is Serve to Change Lives.

I urge you to lead by example and inspire Rotarians and Rotaractors to participate in projects that have a
sustained impact. Join hands with other Rotarians, other
organiza-tions, corporations, and do projects that impact your community, your city — projects that can
change lives of people across the country and around the world. At the end of your term as district
governor, you should feel that because of your leadership, because of your inspiration to the Rotarians
and Rotaractors, the world has changed for better because of the service done by them during the year.

As we all serve, we change the lives of not only others; we change our lives, too. Vivekananda, one of
India's greatest philosophers, said, "When you help someone, do not think that you are obliging him or
her. In fact, it is he or she who is obliging you by giving you an opportunity to give back something to this
world from where we have received so much." Also, he added beautifully, "In life, take the position of the
donor or the server, and yet be so humble in giving and serving that let the donor or server kneel down

and ask: 'May I give? May I serve?' "

Friends, to live for others, to care for others, to serve others and change their lives is the best way to live
our own lives. Just as Albert Einstein said, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."

And friends, as we go about our service initiatives, our special focus this year will be on empowering girls.
One of Rotary's core values is diversity. We have a public statement that outlines our belief in DEI —
diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is important that we empower the girl as we all find that more often
than not, the girl is disadvantaged. We will serve all children, but our focus will be specially on the girl.
There are many issues that girls face in different parts of the world, and you as leaders will ensure that we
try and mitigate the disadvantage of the girl that they may
have.

Friends, to do more and grow more, we have designed some presidential initiatives.

There will be seven presidential conferences across the world focusing on the seven areas of focus. And
for every Rotary and Rotaract club to be able to organize and engage Rotarians and Rotaractors, and the
public at large, we will have Rotary Days of Service. Do participate in the presidential conference closest
to home, and do encourage every club to participate in a Rotary Day of Service. Let them join Rotaractors
and Interactors. Let us showcase our work the world over through thousands of Rotary Days of Service by
Rotary clubs.

Dear change-maker governors, ending polio, fighting COVID, working on large impact-ful projects, and
increasing our membership to a never-before 1.3 million — the task ahead is challenging. And that should
excite you. Rotarians love challenges. A ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what ships are meant for.
They need to go out in the high seas. Life, my dear change-makers, is about adventure and not
maintenance.

Let me end with what I have penned for our theme:

The biggest gift we are given Is the power to touch a life

To change, To make a difference In the circle of life.

If we can reach out With our hands, heart, and soul The magic
will begin to happen

As the wheel begins to roll ...

Let's turn the wheel together So all humanity thrives

We have the power and the magic To serve ... to change lives ...

At this moment, I urge you, wherever you are seated, to put your hand on your heart and pledge with me:
WE HAVE THE POWER AND THE MAGIC TO SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES

So, my dear change-makers, are you ready? Are you ready for the big challenges? Are you ready to serve? Are you ready to change lives?

I am, and I'm sure you are too. Together, let us SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES.

The Paul Harris Challenge

Congratulations on successfully tiding over a difficult period. You have shown
exemplary leadership over the last six months and we are confident you will continue
to do so for the rest of your tenure.
Membership has been the key focus area for our organization, one that started with
just 4 persons on 23rd Feb 1905. To further demonstrate our commitment to this cause
and to celebrate Rotary’s birthday this year, The Paul Harris Challenge is being
launched from today.
All districts in Zones 4,5,6 & 7 are encouraged to implement an intense membership
drive over the next 4 weeks. The challenge will commence from 23rd Jan 2021 and will
end on the midnight of 21st Feb 2021. Please promote the concept of “Each One Bring
One” among clubs in your district.
Needless to say, this growth has to be sustainable by ensuring retention beyond July
1st 2021. A mega event is being planned on 23rd Feb 2021 at 6 pm with the
participation of our RIPE Shekhar Mehta and all other senior leaders of our region.
At this function all districts that have added a minimum of 100 members in this
challenge period shall be recognized and honoured. In addition the top 3 districts in
each Zone will receive special recognition.
We expect to have over 5,000 persons witnessing this event. Only those additions that
have been reported to RI shall be considered. Rotary started with 4. Can 4 zones add 4000 members in 4 weeks? Let us buckle up for this
challenge!
