The Development of the Music Industry in
Pakistan


Who would've thought that in a place where
western music and such was denounced by

dictators such as Zia-ul-Haq would someday be home
to rappers and rock bands? Indeed none of us

would've even imagined it back then. Since 2007,
Musicians have been facing different problems

caused by the political chaos and terrorist situation
in the country. As if that wasn't enough, another

popular platform for sharing and distributing music
known as "YouTube" was also banned in Pakistan.

During that time period the music industry was
facing a drought of good music however new

musicians quickly emerged finding solutions to these
problems.

Different musicians and bands have revived the
music industry of Pakistan by bringing new things.
We can take the example of Coke Studio, where they

created a fusion of Sufi music with modern day
music. Coke studio quickly gained popularity for its
diversity and is now one of the most popular music

programs in South Asia. Coke Studio is the only
platform which has brought together musicians from

different backgrounds together. Artists such as Ali
Azmat, Meesha Shafi and Noori have performed with
Arif Lohar, Abida Parveen and other such renowned

artists.
Apart from the very successful coke studio, Bands
such as Qayaas, SYMT and Overload have changed

the face of the Pakistani Music Industry. They
produced music which was diverse and new to the

industry. They tried a more rock style of music
which brought a revolution throughout the industry.

It opened the industry for all genres of music such
as rap, folk etc.

Rapper Ali Gul Pir has achieved great success after
his single "Waderay ka beta". People of Pakistan are
now more open to diverse music. This has provided a

great platform for upcoming artists and musicians.
We can see other rap artists such as Billy x and

Arbaaz khan on the rise due to wonderful response
of the audience.

Female artists have also gained popularity over the recent
years. Artists such as Zoe Viccaji and Alia Chinoy are an
inspiration for all the aspiring female artists in Pakistan. Many
women are now prospering in this field.

There's also been a latest advance in the industry of artists
releasing albums in Pakistan independently. This involves an
artist taking up the extensive task of being accountable right
from the production stage down to marketing CDs. Bands such
as Overload even direct their own videos. Farhad Humayun the
lead vocalist of the band overload is widely recognized for his
out of the ordinary music videos. He has won many awards for
the best music director due to his hard work in production and
direction of his music videos.


The Music Industry has entered a new era where new hopeful
musicians are welcomed with open arms. The audience has
become more receptive towards their own music as Musicians
try different genres of music. There are still a lot of problems
associated with the music industry. Financial issues are still on
the rise as very few concerts take place due to security threats.
Moreover piracy has made it impossible for artists to earn a fair
earning. The music industry has improved and developed a lot
in the recent years but there are still a lot of ongoing issues in
need of attention.
