ในภาพยนตร์สารคดี เราเล่นกับเหตุการณ์ท่ีเกิดซ่ึงในแง่หน่ึงก็เป็น ความจริง
แตถ่ ้าผมจะขอพูดแบบนว้ี า่ ในความจริงแทท้ ีจ่ ริงแท้ มสี ิ่งท่ีลึกกว่านน้ั ถงึ ที่สุดแลว้
ความจริงเดียวทม่ี คี วามสำ� คัญกค็ อื การตคี วามซงึ่ เปน็ สิ่งทลี่ กึ ซึ้ง

ในช่วงเวลาท่ีความจริงถูกตั้งค�ำถาม ความเป็นกลางถูกต้ังข้อสงสัย คนหลายคน
จะเลือกในสิ่งท่ีสอดคล้องกับความคิดของตน ความจริงไม่ได้มีแค่หนึ่งเดียว ข้ึนอยู่กับ
จุดที่แต่ละคนยืนอยู่ ภาพยนตร์สารคดีจึงไม่ใช่ตัวแทนของความจริงทั้งหมด แต่สารคดี
ที่ดจี ะท�ำให้เรามองสถานการณไ์ ดอ้ ย่างลกึ ซึ้งและไมด่ ่วนตดั สนิ เรอื่ งราวอย่างผิวเผนิ
เทศกาลภาพยนตร์สารคดีนานาชาติศาลายา ได้จัดขึ้นเป็นปีท่ี 4 เรายังพยายาม
ท่ีจะคัดสรรภาพยนตร์สารคดีเชิงสร้างสรรค์ ที่ให้ทางเลือกเพ่ือให้ผู้ชมได้เปิดกว้างและ
สรา้ งบทสนทนาต่อจากตัวหนัง บางเรอ่ื งจะดูยากและหนักหน่วง แต่เราจะค้นพบความ
หรรษาอิม่ เอมในท้ายทส่ี ดุ

In documentary we deal with the actual, and in one sense with the
real. But the really real, if I may use that phrase, is something deeper
than that. The only reality which counts in the end is the interpretation
which is profound

In the time that truth is questioned and objectivity is doubted, many
people choose what match with their belief. Truth has more than one, depend
on where you stand. Documentary is not the representation of absolute truth
but it will make us see the insight of the situation and not superficially jump
into the conclusion.
The 4th Salaya Documentary International Film Festival try to select
the best creative documentary for the audience to open up and generate
dialog after the screening. Some of them might be difficult to access in the
beginning but at the end you will find the joyful enchantment.

Director’s biography

Frederick Wiseman was born in Boston and graduated from
Yale Law School. He has directed nearly forty feature documentaries
and has received multiple honours, including a Peabody Award.
His filmography includes Titicut Follies (1967), High School (1968),
Law & Order (1969), Welfare (1975), Zoo (1993), La Comédie
Française ou l’Amour Joué (1997), Public Housing (1997), The Last
Letter (2002), Boxing Gym (2009).

Director’s biography
Born in 1977 to a farming family in the district of Terng, 60

kilometres from Chiang Rai, the northern part of Thailand, Uruphong
came to the capital for the first time when he was 18, to further his
study at Thammasat’s Faculty of Journalism and Mass Commu-
nications where he majored in film and photography. After graduation
in 2000, he had worked as a film editor and postproduction super-
visor for several Thai feature films. Since 2004, he left quietly from
the industry and has tried to achieve his grassroots filmmaking
through the story from his home village.

Director’s biography

In 2006, Mat Whitecross won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film
Festival for his co-direction of The Road to Guantanamo (with
acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom). Since then, he co-
directed The Shock Doctrine, a documentary based on the best
selling book by Naomi Klein, and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, a
biopic of musician Ian Dury. Moving to Mars is his solo directorial
debut on a feature documentary.

Director’s biography
Julien Temple was born 26 November 1953 in London. He

is an English film, documentary and music video director. He
began his career with short films featuring the Sex Pistols, and
has continued with various off-beat projects, including The Great
Rock 'n Roll Swindle (1979), Absolute Beginners (1986) and a
documentary film about Glastonbury (2006).

Director’s biography

Kim Longinotto (born 1952) is a British documentary film-
maker, well known for making films that highlight the plight of female
victims of oppression or discrimination. Longinotto studied camera
and directing at the National Film and Television School in
Beaconsfield, England, where she now tutors occasionally. She
directed many remarkable documentaries such as Shinjuku Boys
(1995), Divorce Iranian Style (1998), Gaea Girls (2000), Sisters in
Law (2005).
