Baan Ta Kan Tong, the winner of Thailand Rural
Tourism Award 2020, is a small village located
on the Mae Khong River. Its history dates back to
1963, when immigrants from the Northeast came
across this abundant and rich land with plentiful
water sources. Word spread across the Isaan
community and the people eventually settled here
permanently.
The place became an Isaan community where
their own traditional arts and cultures merged with
northern traditions, forming a lively Isaan-Lanna
community filled with the charms and vibrance of
life along the Mae Khong and its abundant vegetation
and local wisdom.
The unique local motorized tractor will take you
along the river to places where you can admire the
“Ta Mong” patterned woven clothes and experience
nature at the mixed-agriculture plantation where
sweet, fragrant passion fruit and quality sacha
peanuts are grown exclusively for royal project
distribution.
In the evening, take a boat ride to trace the history
of Suwankomkam ancient city from the Lanna
legend, pay homage to the community’s Buddha
image and taste Ta Pun’s grilled pork skewer
accompanied by Yai Pun’s legendary dip. Ban
Ta Kan Tong offers local homestays known for
cleanliness, welcoming hospitality, and tasty and
hygienic local food.

Afternoon

• Introduction to the community; Where it’s become known as “Ta Kan Tong Isaan-Lanna village”.
• Board a motorized tractor before learning to weave ‘Ta Mong’ patterned fabric.
• Visit a combined agricultural plantation and collect passion fruit for cooking
• Brown rice milling ‘Kaeng Khae Brown Rice’ Cooking
• Visit a sacha peanut plantation and taste sacha peanut herbal wraps.
• Sail along the Mae Khong River, following the story of Suwankomkam Ancient City.
• Enjoy the sunset with some of Ta Pun’s grilled pork washed down with ‘ya dong’ (locally-brewed liquor).
• ‘Khan Tok’ offering ceremony for the spirits and ‘baci’ welcome ceremony.

Evening

• Enjoy a traditional ‘Khan Tok’ dinner.
• Be impressed by the traditional cultural performance that accompanies dinner.

• Giving alms to monks in front of the accommodation before breakfast.

fishermen’s way of life that has found a way to incorporate
community tourism, all starting from the local wisdom. Part of
the charm of this village is its incredible innovations; for instance,
you’ll see how the fishing net has been turned into bags, clothes
and many other products; mud, where crab traps are laid, is
turned into cosmetic products for export; herbs and plants are
turned into southern-style spice paste. Even the locally caught
seafood is creatively processed and turned into best-selling

unique traditions like Thai dessert-making have formed an interesting tourism path where
visitors can learn about the story of mineral sifters in the past. Kaolin is now one of the most
popular minerals in Thailand and has been transformed into various kaolin ceramic products.

• Pay homage to Buddha’s relics and Luang Po Tan Klai, the former abbot of Hat Sompaen Temple.
• Board a traditional wooden mini-bus and trace the footsteps of the past in the old mine. Enjoy traditional dessert.
• Visit “Ranong Canyon” and admire its beautiful scenery.

Have lunch and taste Baan Hat Sompaen’s famous herbal sweet rice noodle. See the traditional
sifting dance at “Hat Sompaen Sub-district Communal Vocational Promotion Center”.

• See how ceramic products are made from kaolin with a demonstration and try making your own too.
• Shop for some souvenirs from Baan Hat Sompaen.
• Learn how mineral sifting is done at “Mineral Sifting Learning Center”.
