Heart Care Foundation was established on the World Heart Day of 2005. In a span of over 15
years the Foundation was able to launch and run successfully the following projects in the
field of heart care in the State of Kerala.

Save 1000 hearts, Save a life, Installation of AED’s Caring hearts’
1000 lives, Save a lifetime (Automated External a quarterly

Dear Members of the Heart Care Foundation, let me, to begin

with, wish you all, a very healthy and hearty life. As we are going
through a pandemic time, and knowing that the viral disease
produce various types of illnesses, even in the post infection stage,
we need to be extremely cautious in treating the illness as well as
watching out for any post infection complications.

I personally feel that we are living in a safer time now than the
year before with much more treatment modalities, which are
proved scientifically, are available currently, it is very important
that rather than ignoring the disease, to avail the advance treatment, not only to treat the
disease but also to prevent complications after the disease. Nevertheless it is always better not
to have an infection by being careful, adhering to the stipulated precautions like wearing
masks, social distancing as well as proper sanitization.

September has got two important celebrations. One is the World Heart Day which is coming
on the 29th of September, which the Heart Care Foundation used to celebrate in grand
manner every year. Because of the Covid and its related issues, we could not celebrate World
Heart Day last year as well. But let me wish you all a very healthy and heart healthy
especially life during this year and the years to come.

The 2nd celebration is the World Physiotherapy Day on the 8th of September. Physiotherapy
and rehabilitation are major part the Heart Care Foundation has been focusing over the
years, especially after developing a heart attack or undergoing an angioplasty or bye-pass
surgery, rehabilitation and reintegration into the society has been the major areas where the
Heart Care Foundation was focusing on. So these two celebrations in September add a
special interest to our members as well as the readers of this magazine.

Before I conclude, let me once again pray and hope that we will be able to meet sometime in
the near future overcoming the covid scare on a physical platform and share the joy and
happiness of being together as we always used to enjoy over the last decade or so.

Wishing you all good health and God’s choicest blessings

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram

Are patients with diabetes at higher COVID-19 & DIABETES
risk of contracting COVID -19
infection?

Available data seems to suggest that
the occurrence of COVID-19
infectionis not higher in patients with
diabetes. However, those with
diabetes seem to develop more severe
COVID -19 infection with higherdeath
rates.The prevalence of diabetes and
obesity was higher in individuals
admitted to hospital compared to those
treated at home.A survey from
England showed that nearly one third
of patients with COVID-19 dying in
hospital had type 2 diabetes with
double the risk of dying compared
with patients without diabetes.

What are the risk factors that affect
the outcomes in COVID -19 infection?

Recommended Assessment & Testing
after Covid-19 Recovery

1. Routine laboratory testing Is not recommended for individuals who have fully recovered from a mild
COVID infection and are currently asymptomatic.

2. However, those who were admitted to hospital with moderate to severe infection and since recovered as
well as those having preexisting medical conditions, should follow their doctor’s advice regarding
further testing.

3. Laboratory tests including complete blood count, fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose and
HbA1c ( in patients with diabetes ), renal and liver function tests, inflammatory markers such as CRP
and ESR, Thyroid function tests, Vitamin D , Vitamin B12 are usually performed when patients are
symptomatic after COVID. It is best to perform these tests after consulting with your doctor.

4. As COVID infection as well as some medications that are used to treat COVID can worsen preexisting
diabetes, one should carefully check their glucose values at various times of the day and manage their
glucose readings accordingly.

5. Those previously on thyroid medications also should consult their doctor and perform their thyroid
function blood tests to make sure the levels are controlled.
