INTRODUCTION
Stock exchange is a market or a place for purchasing and
selling of different type of securities. Securities traded on a
stock exchange include shares issued by companies,
derivatives, debentures and bonds etc. As the stock
exchange deals in all types of securities, it is known as the
'securities market' or 'securities exchange' also.
A stock exchange is a secondary market of securities
because the trading happens only for the securities that
have already been issued to the public and now being
allowed to be traded on the floor of a stock exchange after
getting listed with the stock exchange. The initial offering of
stocks and bonds to investors is by definition done in the
primary market and subsequent trading is done in the
secondary market.
THE YORE OF STOCK
EXCHANGE
Stock markets were started when countries in the New
World began trading with each other. While many
pioneer merchants wanted to start huge businesses,
this required substantial amounts of capital that no
single merchant could raise alone. As a result, groups
of investors pooled their savings and became business
partners and co-owners with individual shares in their
businesses to form joint-stock companies. Originated
by the Dutch, joint-stock companies became a viable
business model for many struggling businesses. In
1602, the Dutch East India Co. issued the first paper
shares. This exchangeable medium allowed
shareholder to conveniently buy, sell and trade their
stock with other shareholders and investors.
As the volume of shares increased, the need for an
organized marketplace to exchange these shares
became necessary. As a result, stock traders decided to
meet at a London coffeehouse, which they used as a
marketplace. Eventually, they took over the coffeehouse
and, in 1773, changed its name to the "stock
exchange." Thus, the first exchange, the London Stock
Exchange, was founded. The idea made its way to the
American colonies with an exchange started in
Philadelphia in 1790.

Factors influencing
share price
Demand and supply: When the demand for a particular
stock exceeds its supply, it effectively means that the
number of buyers for the stock are more than the number of
sellers. This invariably leads to a rise in the price of that
particular share The converse is also true.
Economy: The state of the country’s economy and the
developments in the global economy are one among the
many important factors influencing share prices Most
investors tend to discount the impact of the current
economic climate when predicting the price movement of
shares.
Government policies: The policies of the Government are
often considered to be major factors affecting share prices.
If the policies announced by the Government are perceived
as unfavourable by the investors, the share prices of the
associated industries and sectors tend to fall. E.g: Stock
market fluctuation during annual budget announcement.
Political scenario: Any major shift in the internal political
scenario can dictate the price movement of the shares.
Investors always try to stay away from investing in countries
going through political uncertainty. since such a scenario
significantly increases the risk of their capital being eroded.
