A Holiday Miracle
“Be so good they can’t ignore you.”
Steve Martin
Hello and welcome to the December issue of Eydis Authentic Living magazine, I am so happy you are here. I love this time of year, the hustle, and bustle of shopping, family celebrations, the joy of giving; it’s a glorious time for sure. No matter what your religion or spiritual practices are, I’d like to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday.
For those of you who know me, know that I am a very spiritual person. I have a strong faith in God, the universe, a higher power. I believe that through awareness we are all guided and as long as we are open to receiving, signs will always show up for us.
I was talking to my dear friend, Lisa Marie, and told her of a story; an experience I had just witnessed days earlier. When I finished, she asked if I was going to write about it. I thought for a moment and took it as a sign that I should share with all of you.
A couple of evenings ago, I snapped a photo of the work that I had done earlier that day in taking down a huge vine from the deck.
As I took the picture, I stood there looking at it and in the lower right corner of the photo, a shiny image caught my eye. I quickly looked up from the photo and onto the deck to see what it was, but
nothing was there. In making the photo larger, it became clear to me that I had captured something magnificent!
Something that appeared to looked like a translucent angel wing.
A Nature Spirit? I had heard of them before being captured in photos but had never seen one. What a cool thing. In
doing some research, it is my understanding that they tend to be translucent and if you are lucky enough to capture
one in a photo, you will only see a part of its body, which would explain what looked like a translucent wing.
True holiday miracles happening all the time, and this year I was given the gift of one, an angel wing. And
although I am unsure of its meaning, I am sure it was meant to be shared this holiday season.
Enjoy the picture and have a wonderful holiday

LIFE IN THE
“Treat everyone as though they are the most important person in the world, because to them, they are.”
–Debra Poneman
by Maria Savoy
ebra Poneman is a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING you had to be exclusive and not
best-selling author, Debra’s life growing up was mingle with the ‘uncool’ ones. the founder of “Yes to Success” surrounded by the energy of Sometimes I even saw what we
seminars and the co-founder
of “Your Year of Miracles,” a mentoring program for women. Debra began transforming lives in the 1970’s when she studied with the greatest spiritual masters of the east and taught meditation to thousands. Since then, she’s shared her teachings on how to create outer success on the basis of inner silence around the world helping tens of thousands of people to create lives they love.
I had the pleasure of meeting Debra at a seminar I attended and we instantly connected on a soul level. This contagiously witty, kind and brilliant aura of white light and love embraces every aspect of her life and allows others to follow in her “judgment free” Miracle Zone.
her loving family and friends. Always kind to others, it was
no wonder that she was one of the “popular” ones. But as life lessons would have it, she quickly learned that the title came with incredible responsibility.
At the age of 13, and in eighth grade, Debra had a powerful “awakening” experience. The lesson of that experience would mold the rest of her life.
Debra belonged to a club
that was formed in her grade school called the Cleftos. If you belonged to this club, you were considered to be one of the “cool” girls.
“There was an unwritten rule that to be a ‘cool’ girl in school,
would now call bullying,” Debra shared.
That code of conduct never resonated with Debra, but she says although she didn’t perpetuate it, she never interrupted it.
“One day I remember being
on the playground sitting at
a picnic table where all the
cool girls hung out,” Debra explained. “Two of the girls
in the club walked toward us with a girl that was not a part
of the group. They said to her, ‘We have good news. We want you to be a Clefto!’ I remember that girl’s eyes lite up as though her dreams were coming true. I could literally see the joy oozing from her as she thought she
eydisauthenticliving.com 21

was being accepted into this world of coolness. As this joy was spilling out, the two girls laughed and said, ‘We’re just kidding! We would never have you in our club.’’
Debra vividly remembers
the look on the girl’s face
as her complete joy turned
into intense pain and how excruciating it was for her to witness it. That was when Debra had what she now describes as a spiritual awakening.
“I actually saw that the moment this girl contracted in pain, that pain radiated from her body. I actually saw the entire planet, beginning with the playground, become a hologram and I saw how her pain affected every corner of creation,” Debra shared.
“What I also experienced was that the greatest part of this pain bounced back and went into the bodies of the two girls who perpetrated the incident. I
saw it lodge itself as a darkness in their subtle physiologies that would affect them over and over throughout their lives.”
In that moment Debra realized that each person’s pain was all of our pain—that there wasn’t a molecule on the planet that wasn’t affected.
It was at that moment that Debra made a promise to herself, that she would never consciously cause another living being
pain and makes every effort to continue that practice day.
“One thing I try to live by is
to remember that the most important person in the world is the person standing in front of you at any given moment, and the most important thing you can do for your success is to treat everybody as the most important person in the world, because to them, they are. We are each the most important people in our own worlds and
deserve to be treated that way. I love the quote from Mahatma Gandhi who said, “If you can’t see God in the next person you meet, you need look no further.’”
DEBRA’S JOURNEY
At the age of 18, Debra began her formal spiritual journey studying at the feet of some of the greatest spiritual masters in the world. She would
spend months on end in deep meditation for up to 12 hours a day, often in silence for weeks at a time.
Some may ask ... why would one do that? The answer Debra gave was simple; “We were told that our deep meditation and silence was a counterbalance
to the chaos and violence on the planet at the time. We were making our contribution to world peace. I was also deeply committed to my own self- realization and that was the path I chose.”

Debra shares, “People often feel helpless when they see some of the horrible things that are going on
in the world. But the truth is, each person can make a difference. I love the teaching of the great Kabbalist, Rabbi Ashlag and the simple analogy he gives to show how each individual can have a tremendous impact on the entire world.”
One day, the Rabbi put a balance scale on the table and he told his students to place equal amounts of sesame seeds on each side of the scale. He then said, “The seeds on one side of the scale represent the pain, the darkness, the suffering, the cruelty, the unhappiness in the world. When we add to that, we bring the planet closer to an age of destruction. The seeds on the other side represent joy, light, happiness, kindness, love, good. When we add to that, we bring the planet closer to a golden age, an Age of Enlightenment.
He then said, “We are at a very precarious time in the history of
creation, where there is a great battle going on between good and evil. If there are equal amounts of seeds on both sides, how many seeds would it take to tip the scales one way or the other? The answer is one. How do you know that that one act of hurt or that one act of love that you perform isn’t the act that tips the scales one way or the other? You are more powerful than you can imagine.”
In 1980 Debra was introduced to the energetic concepts like the “Law of Attraction” that have now been made popular by the book and film The Secret. When Debra was first introduced to this body
of knowledge, it resonated so powerfully that she knew that it was what she wanted to teach for the rest of her life.
In 1981 Debra founded Yes to Success Seminars and became a pioneer in the “New Thought” movement. She began giving seminars based on “radical” ideas like everything is energy and your thoughts create your reality. It didn’t take long before her seminars were established in cities across
the US and in seven countries on four continents. She also went on to have the first infomercial in the history of infomercials to offer a self-improvement product.
One tenant of Debra’s teaching
is that if an idea comes to you, it comes to you because it wants to be manifested through you. That’s why we all have different ideas. You have the ideas that you have the ability to manifest. One of Debra’s favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson who says, “There is nothing capricious in Nature. The implanting of a desire indicates
Debra feels
that you should learn meditation from a qualified instructor who teaches a method that comes from an ancient tradition, the effectiveness of which has been verified by modern science. She personally recommends Sahaj Samadhi Meditation taught through the Art of Living Foundation
or the Transcendental Meditation Technique.

in print from coast to coast.
She was a trainer for major corporations like MacDonnell Douglas, Mattel Toys, and the Xerox Management Group at a time when there were virtually no women doing training in the corporate sector. Among her students were those who went on to become mega-successful entrepreneurs, NY Times bestselling authors, millionaires, billionaires and renowned luminaries like Marci Shimoff, Janet Attwood, Steve Farber and Phil Town. Even Deepak Chopra attended Debra’s seminars numerous times.
In 1988 in the midst of negotiations for her own daytime TV talk show and with a contract, in-hand, with a major NY publishing house, Debra took the most radical step of her life and gave it all up.
True to her own teaching of following your heart, the day Debra’s baby girl was born, she found a new passion
and chose to become a stay- at-home mom. When her publisher and producer called she told them they would have to call back—in eighteen years, which turned into twenty-one years when three years later, her son was born.
“People would say to me, ‘Wow! That must have been hard to give up your career?!?’ I would just say that I didn’t give up anything. Not only did
I love being a mom but I knew that each of us was put here for a purpose and if my purpose is to teach people energetic laws

that its gratification is in the constitution of the creature who feels it.” In other words, Nature doesn’t trick you and give you desires without giving you the ability to fulfill them!
A great example that Debra gives is through this statement, “God has no hands but yours.” She says that the Creator
can’t come down and open a gluten free bakery on-line so the Creator chooses a worthy vessel and gives you the idea but if you don’t act on it, that idea is going to have to go to someone who will.
In 1983 Debra was appearing regularly on TV, radio and

of success, that purpose is not going to go away if I take time off to devote to my children.”
Debra said that the decades she spent being home with her two biological children and the many others who called her mom and lived at the Poneman home for days, months or even years, were deeply fulfilling.
But time marches on and Debra’s former students
who had now gone on to become icons in the world of transformational leadership were urging her to return
to that world that she’d left twenty-one years before.
Debra shared, “Two of my closest friends, Marci Shimoff and Janet Attwood kept saying to me, ‘When are you going
to stop pretending that your kids still need you and start speaking again?’ The truth is, there are a lot of great people who were raised
by parents who
worked outside
the home or by
grandparents or
foster parents.
So I don’t know
if my kids ever
really needed. But
I do know that
I needed them.
Because to me,
one, ‘I love you,
Mommy, you’re
the best mom in
the whole world,’
is worth more
to me than a
thousand standing
ovations. But I
realized they were right. It was time to let go.”
Side Bar: “It doesn’t matter that others are teaching what you want to be teaching. There is not only one person who
is meant to write a book or teach success or happiness or passion. There are people who came on this earth to hear the message from you. There are people who incarnated for you to be their teacher. And they are waiting for you.”
YOUR YEAR
OF MIRACLES
Three years ago, Debra received an excited call from Marci Shimoff. Marci, who was Debra’s secretary when she founded Yes to Success and went on to be a featured teacher in the Secret and a multiple time #1 NY Times bestselling author (while, Debra says, “I was at Chuckie Cheese”) had an idea.
Marci told Debra that she was personally mentoring a handful of high-end clients on how to create miraculous lives. She said that although over a thousand women had applied for her mentorship program, because of its one-on-one structure, she could only accept eight.
Marci realized that what
she wanted to do was offer
a program that had less personalized attention but where she could still teach her formula for miracles. She said that she thought to herself, “Who do I know who also lives a life filled with the miraculous, is a fabulous teacher and who
I would love to launch this program with?”
Marci said there was only one person who fit the bill and together she and Debra created Your Year of Miracles (YOM), a group-mentoring program for women who are ready to create
Debra Poneman and Marci Shimoff
eydisauthenticliving.com 25

miraculous lives for themselves. They created a price structure
so that the program was so affordable that anyone who was ready could join them and learn their formula for creating miracles beyond their wildest dreams.
“We created a year-long program because we saw what happens when people go to weekend programs or even week or month-long programs, Debra shares. They get hyped up but there are not a lot of long-lasting effects. What we’ve seen in the three years that women have been in YOM is that their lives really change, powerfully and permanently.
“Over 4000 women have participated in our program and we’ve seen everything from women in their sixties finding their soul mates for
the first time; women with a lifetime of money struggles becoming financially abundant; women leaving careers to
pursue their non-profit dreams and ending up making more money than they did before. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve seen miraculous healings of chronic conditions and miraculous healings of relationships – even somewhere the rift occurred decades ago.
“One woman who was at our retreat said to me, ‘This has been the greatest year I’ve ever had. I lost my job, divorced my husband and had to move out the home I’ve been living in for twenty-five years and I’ve never been happier in my life.’ The tools we shared and the support of the community allowed her to let go of what wasn’t serving her highest good and to create a space for something better to come in. And I’d need all day to tell you all the miracles that are now happening in her life. What better can you ask for than that?
“And honestly,” Debra added, “I think what our participants love
the most is the life-long friends they make in our community, and that they finally start deeply loving and accepting themselves. It really is miraculous.”
INSPIRING WORDS
Many people ask Debra if they’ll find their life’s purpose
if they join her YOM program. She says that we all have a lot of life’s purposes—that there is a time for every purpose under heaven. But when we think
our real purpose is external,
we may never find it. Our real life’s purpose is to develop the unshakable inner peace and contentment that never leaves us no matter what’s happening in our external world—the contentment that’s there whether our book soars to #1 or never moves past #100,000.
Debra believes that people are too obsessed these days with finding their “PURPOSE” like
it’s some holy grail. What if your purpose, the reason you’re here,
26 | Eydis Magazine
Debra and her co-founder of Your Year of Miracles Marci Shimoff.

is to go out and give love each day or to get out of bed and grab every opportunity to do
a random act of kindness? Or, instead of feeling like a loser because you’re not playing piano in Carnegie Hall, why
not use your God-given music talent and bring joy to the residents of a retirement home? If you can’t play baseball with the NY Yankees but you love baseball, do what my friend Dean did, he founded a buddy baseball league where young people are paired with kids with special needs and they play baseball each Sunday together in the summer. What if your purpose is to just see God in every person you meet?
When you ask for something with all your heart, you’ll get one of only three answers... .”Yes;” “Not now;” or “I love you too much to give that to you—there’s something better on the way.”
Debra now lives in San Rafael, CA where she has joint custody of her daughter’s French bulldog, Ranger while her daughter Deanna is busy excelling in chiropractic school. Debra’s son Daniel is the founder of a non- profit that helps kids in the most challenging neighborhoods of Chicago to go to college through
procuring basketball scholarships. He also recently produced a compelling documentary, A Shot
in the Dark, following a Chicago basketball team over a four-year period and showing how, for many, basketball is the only way out.

And here’s the miracle: Do that, and you’ll probably end up playing in Carnegie.
Debra reminds us that you’re not capable of having a desire that you’re not capable of fulfilling. Just don’t push. Instead, surrender and trust that all will unfold exactly as it’s supposed to in perfect timing. That doesn’t mean you don’t take action. Quite to the contrary, as you can’t steer a parked car.
And don’t forget to have gratitude for what you already have now. That’s the way to create an opening for your heart’s desires to find their way to you. And yes, there are some things you think you want that you won’t get. Just remember we live in a benevolent universe where everything happens in our favor.

PETS, MUSIC,
AND Relaxation
by Mella Barnes
While I write this, I’m listening to a Bach song online, which is said to be specially formatted for dogs’ ears. My dogs are non-responsive, sleeping as if nothing is playing at all. I know they’re not deaf (they can hear a potato chip bag open from a mile away), but I wonder what makes them tune out music?
As a session singer, my dogs are used to constant music (or noise, as the case may be).
We live on a busy street, and I leave the windows open to let in fresh air. Noise is a daily part of our lives. However, my dog’s behavior lately has made me curious about his hearing.
I have two chihuahuas, and Cheeky is by far the most sensitive of the two. Pinky
weighs in at four pounds but sees no size difference between her and the husky next door. Cheeky monitors everything. Sometimes I’ll be checking email and audibly say “Oh come on,” or “Are you kidding me?!” as is common in the glamorous life of a freelance worker. Whenever I say anything like this, Cheeky places a paw on my leg, as if to say, “I know you’re upset, but you need
to relax. It’s not worth this language.” He hates plastic bags, the vacuum, new things, spaces where things used to be, and sharing treats with his sister.
I started to notice lately that when I’m in my studio, Cheeky hides. Pinky sits right next to me (despite the fact that their orthopedic bed is four feet away). I couldn’t figure out why
eydisauthenticliving.com 31

Cheeky would hide. Was my microphone making some kind of high-pitched sound only he could hear? Was my voice just that awful? I definitely couldn’t rule either of those out, but I started to pay more attention to how I behaved in my studio.
Although I absolutely love my job, I have to admit I wear my stress on my sleeve. Any technical problem gets a huge sigh and eye roll from me. I curse my lack of experience in certain areas
of mixing, and I literally curse when I forget to save a project and it suddenly vanishes. Paying attention to my dog forced me to take an outside look at my stress level during work.
Psychologist Heather Schwartz, PsyD. states that what causes you stress can also be a source of pleasure (Schwartz, 2012). Think about people who watch sports and have a meltdown when
their team isn’t doing well. They enjoy sports, but the outcome is stressful if it doesn’t go their way. However, psychologist Laurie
B. Mintz Ph.D. states that we
can easily reframe our anxiety into excitement. Events such as getting married, a typically happy occasion, and getting fired, a sad occasion, rate at about the same level on the stress scale (Mintz, 2011). This means that the main contributing factor to stress or excitement lies primarily in how we perceive the event itself.
I decided to put this trick to the test. Whenever I got stressed
with a job, I told myself, “I
am so lucky to have this job!”
It felt really gross and fake
at first because I am a cynic
with a heart of solid marble. Eventually, however, it became easier to see my technical difficulties as opportunities to learn something new. I learned how to avoid future problems by studying what went wrong. Sometimes this didn’t work, but in order to appease my dog I would simply pause and breathe for as long as I needed until the stress melted away.
Cheeky stopped hiding. He started sitting right next to me on the other side of Pinky (again despite the fact that I bought them a really nice bed that was not cheap and was right there). I had cured my dog’s stress, through curing my own.
Obviously, this is not a substitute for mental health, and if you’re seriously stressed and suffering from anxiety, please seek professional help (it works, I promise). If you’re simply a Type-A personality prone to stress, it’s worth giving this technique a try to see if it works for you!
If you want to see if your environment is stressing out your dog, I found this great test from canine music expert Lisa Spector:
2
32 | Eydis Magazine
1
Rate the sounds from one to ten, with one being the least stressful and ten the most. Note the stress not only for your dog but also yourself.
Sit quietly for 30 minutes with pen and paper. Take detailed note of any sounds you hear.
Upon hearing these sounds, notice your dogs’ behavior.
3

4Review the list and see if there are any sounds you can change or remove to make you and your dogs happier.
If your pet responds to it, you can also play them music specifically designed for their needs (Spector, 2014). My dogs didn’t seem to
care about it at all, but yours just might. Music and noise play such a huge role in our stress level, so it’s worth taking a closer listen to find out what’s bothering you and your pets. If you can’t change the sounds or source of the stress,
try reframing how you view them and see if it changes your outlook completely.

Harmony
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
by Sharon Carne
Does any of this sound familiar? There’s too much to do. You just can’t keep up with everything on your list. The line-ups are way too long. Do you find yourself catching every flu or cold that’s going around? Do you feel that some days you are barely hanging on?
Congratulations! You found this article! Take a deep breath. Your wellbeing has many dimensions that include your physical health, your mental health,
your emotional health and your relationships. When you are facing full days with little time for self-care, these aspects
of your wellbeing often get ignored.
But one of the MOST ignored aspects of wellbeing is spiritual health. The human spirit is a powerhouse of strength, grace, calm, harmony and peace
that can carry you through any
34 | Eydis Magazine

challenge, big or small. When you feel disconnected from
joy in your life, consider that you may have forgotten your connection to your spiritual self.
There is good news! You can NEVER lose your connection with your spiritual essence. It’s
as much a part of you as your nose or your toes. You are strength. You are grace. You are harmony. You are peace. This is your essence!
You can forget about it, though. And the insidious symptoms of stress feed this forgetfulness.
Stress always gets amplified during the holiday season. When you create moments during your day to create connection with your spiritual self, you reduce or dissolve symptoms of stress.
How do you know when you are connected to your soul or spiritual essence? Whenever you feel deep peace, joy, wonder, gratitude, bliss, calm, love or happiness - for no particular reason. Shifting into connection with your soul can be compared to turning the dial on the radio or changing channels on the TV. You are changing frequencies.
Quantum physicists tell us that when you get down to the smallest particles in our bodies (and everything else), they are vibrating and moving. Different parts of us vibrate at different frequencies.
Your liver has a specific frequency. So does your heart, your stomach, your brain, etc. Your body has an overall frequency,
a combination of all these parts. Your soul has a frequency – a very high frequency.
Even your thoughts have specific frequencies. Negative thoughts have lower frequencies than positive thoughts. In moments of connection with your soul, you shift your frequency to a higher level of vibration. It feels light or fun or good. It’s like coming home.
eydisauthenticliving.com 35

You can and do change your frequency, constantly and easily, with your thoughts, voice, and feelings. You might not be able to see it, but the energy your thoughts create is very real. You can certainly feel it.
Have you noticed how hard
it is to be around a person who complains a great deal? The negative statements and thoughts feel like heavy dark clouds. If you are near, some of this can rub off on you. Your overall frequency has taken a nosedive and you are suddenly in a foul mood.
Sometimes a series of negative thoughts can feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. We have all had those days. Negative thoughts and feelings feel heavy.
Even something as simple as
a sigh can lift heavy feelings. We do it naturally when we are sad or frustrated. If you feel a sigh coming on, explore a little. Say ahhhh with the sigh as the air leaves your lungs. Ahhhh
is a heart sound. Do you hear
it sometimes when you are giving or receiving a hug? It feels good, doesn’t it? You just experienced connection with your spirit.
A backlog of frustrations on a bad day feels like knots building up in your body. Imagine that you are dissolving the knots as you sigh. Your own voice can
be an amazing stress-buster,
especially if it is supported with conscious intention. That means that you become the co-creator or director of your life, rather than letting life happen to you.
Here are a few simple ideas for a quick connect with your spiritual self, just to get you started.
BREATHE
Take one really deep breath and hitchhike a ride on it like a slow wave all the way down to your navel and back up. Take a few more like that and you will notice that you have slowed down your heartbeat. You might even have calmed down your mind for a few seconds. If you are wondering what to do with a quiet mind - enjoy it or listen. You have just connected with your beautiful spiritual self.
If you are having one of those days where you just don’t have enough time, take a few nice
slow deep breaths down to your navel and back. You can do that anywhere. We all have to breathe. Then feel grateful for all the time you need to do what is most important. You might notice that some of the things on your ‘To Do’ list just aren’t that important right now. Or, out of the blue, someone offers you help. Accept it! It is a gift from your soul.
WONDER
Admire a beautiful sunset. Don’t think. Just admire.
Smell a flower Gaze at the stars
Look into someone’s eyes deeply and see their beautiful spiritual self-shining through those eyes.
PLAY
Catch a snowflake on your tongue. This could take a while if it’s not snowing.
Have a funny face competition with your kids. My son, Matt, has the best funny faces in our family. I always lose because I’m laughing so hard.
Smile at the person in line in front of you.

Give someone you care about a hug. Just because.
GRATITUDE
One of the quickest ways out of grouch-ville is to think of something you are grateful
for. You could even make a
list. But don’t stop there. To really shift your frequency, feel grateful. Really feel it. The feeling of gratitude, especially gratitude combined with love, has the highest frequency of all our feelings. That will lift the heaviness.
You can feel grateful for the driver on the busy road who leaves a space for you to merge in. You can feel thankful for your car, for getting you safely to and from work. Did you notice that the ride seems easier and quicker?
And as you explore the many wonderful ways to connect with that brilliant spiritual self of yours, you begin to notice that you are bringing happiness, health, harmony, hope, humor and passion into your life. And you don’t limit your singing to the shower.

You may be wondering why an article of this title would come out, especially right before the holidays. We urge you to think carefully of what you seek. And not just at the holidays. It’s too easy to
try to fill oneself with material goods when one is really seeking spiritual or personal fulfillment.
So we ask you now to search deeply and answer the question that is really on your mind: “What do I really want?”
• Is it fulfillment?
• Is it gratitude?
• Is what I am seeking actually what I want to be giving?
Strive to look beyond the surface-meaning of the thing that you believe you want. Avoid evaluating with your head when you can be listening through your heart and soul. You may find direction to your answer by identifying how you think you will feel if you achieve
by Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC
it. What does this thing you want symbolize? What does it represent?
To do this, access the right hemisphere of your brain. This is your creative aspect.
• Use different types of art media to draw or create.
• Create or play music, or dance to the representations of your feelings.
• Disconnect your left-brain analyzing-mind with activities like yoga or tai chi.
• Meditate or pray.
• Channel information from your Higher Wisdom or from your Guides.
If you are not yet skilled in the technique of channeling, you can allow yourself to write whatever comes to mind, even if it seems unrelated, silly, or ridiculous at first. This can be done with pen and paper, but it is also helpful
to close your eyes in front of your computer or tablet and type whatever comes to mind. Be patient and be curious and see where it takes you.
‘Wanting more’ is not a negative, but we do urge you to identify your deeper, truer desire at every opportunity, to regain or maintain connection with your Self. ‘Wanting’ is therefore really asking the question, “Who am I and what do I need?” and realizing that the answer never really was about the sweater, the car, the life partner or the job promotion.

ARE YOU GETTING YOUR
42 | Eydis Magazine
Beauty Sleep?
by Pat Duckworth

You know what happens sleep (REM). In slow wave shown that women experience
sleep your body is carrying out its routine maintenance and repair work. This is like your internal cleaners doing their work. In REM sleep your brain is consolidating memories from the day. This is the work of your internal filing clerks!
Because of this essential work taking place during the night, long term poor quality sleep increases the risk of:
heart disease
high blood pressure
some cancers, such as bowel cancer
stress
inflammation
problems with weight control poor memory
low energy
low mood
Problems with sleep can
be the result of a variety of factors including unsuitable bedroom environment, stress, excessive worrying, side-effects of medication, obesity, or substance abuse. It can also be the result of life circumstances such as bereavement, coping with young children or problems at work or at home.
Marginally more women than men report having sleep problems and research has
when you don’t get your ‘beauty sleep’. The dark
shadows appear your eyes,
your skin loses its bloom and you generally lose your healthy glow. But, of course, there are wider implications to lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. We know about the benefits of sleep from what happens to people who have poor or interrupted sleep, including shift workers.
We naturally start to feel sleepy as light levels drop during
the evening and the ambient temperature gets cooler. These environmental changes trigger the release of hormones that create the gateway for sleep. The use of bright artificial lighting and central heating can disrupt this natural process.
There is no official guideline about how much sleep you should get every night because everyone is different. On average, a “normal” amount of sleep for an adult is considered to be around seven to nine hours a night. This varies with age. Children and babies may sleep for much longer than this, whereas older adults may sleep less. What’s important
is whether you feel you get enough sleep and whether your sleep is good quality.
While you are asleep you go through cycles of slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement
the effects of poor sleep more than men. As women enter their 40s fluctuations in the reproductive hormones can give rise to night sweats which cause sleep disturbance. When I give talks to women’s groups I find that nearly 90% of the attendees have problems getting off to sleep, waking up frequently during the night or waking up too early.
Some sleep problems are transient and you will get back to a regular, healthy sleep pattern without any damage to your long term health. However, if
the problem persists there are practical steps that you can take.
Keep a sleep journal* for a week so that you can identify any patterns that are giving rise to the problem. Make a note of what you are eating and drinking during the day. Look at your daytime and evening activities including your exercise routine, what you are watching on television and what you are reading.
Check your bedroom environment. Your bedroom should be a sleep haven reserved for sleep and sex. Remove any electronic gadgets, computers, and televisions. Keep your bedroom cool, quiet and well-ventilated. Make sure that your mattress and pillows are comfortable.

If possible, eat your last meal early in the evening to allow your stomach time to digest your food. Avoid rich or heavy meals late in the evening. Cut down your caffeine intake after midday. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink in the evening. It may make you sleepy but you will need to visit the bathroom during the night and your sleep will not be so restful
Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Gradually lower the light levels in the evening to trigger the hormones that prepare you for sleep. If you watch television in the evening, choose amusing or non- controversial programs. Do not watch or listen to evening news broadcasts that will make you upset or worried. Have a warm bath or shower.
Practice self-soothing. If you find yourself becoming agitated or restless when you settle down
to sleep, notice your emotions and gently say to yourself, ‘Stop. Relax’. As you do this, relax your body and face, and take several deep breaths from low in your chest. Breathe in for the count of four and out for the count of seven. Picture something that you find pleasant – the face of someone you love, or a favorite place in nature for example. You’ll be delighted at how quickly you can calm yourself.
Change the annoying voice in your head. If you cannot get to sleep or you are awake during

the night you may be giving yourself negative or worrying messages. Imagine taking your inner voice and pushing it away so that the voice moves all the way down to your toes. Slow the voice down and make it quieter and quieter. Make it the most boring voice you have ever heard repeating a very boring message. Change it to a Mickey Mouse voice that you just can’t take seriously!
Always remember if you wake up during the night that you are safe and warm and comfortable. Stay in that moment and do not let your mind drift into the past to something that did not go as planned or into a future where you are picturing something going wrong.
Sleep well!

Take a 3-minute break. If you wake up during the night use this simple process:
MINUTE 1 Take a minute to acknowledge what’s going on in your head. Recognise that your mind is racing and that you don’t like it. It’s ok not to like it so just allow it to happen without trying to fix it.
MINUTE 2 Move your attention
to your breathing. Notice the sensations of the breath from the flow of air over your nose or mouth, down through your chest and into your stomach. Follow the breath without trying to control it. If your attention wanders, acknowledge where it went and then come back to your breathing. Do that for a minute.
MINUTE 3 Expand your attention to your whole body and notice what is going on e.g., the sensations
in your feet, legs, torso, face, etc. Just notice them without trying to change or judge anything. Leave out or let go of any emotions associated with those sensations. This may take practice but it is worth uncoupling your experience of bodily sensations from your associated thoughts and feelings.
At the end of the 3 minutes, if you are still awake, the worries may still be there but you will be able to focus on possible solutions rather than infecting them with past experiences and regrets.

Shine
IT’S YOUR TIME TO
by Lisa Marie Platske
The mere thought of into leadership, living out your big getting in front of a mission (you know, the one that camera for a video shoot gets only your closest friends know
me weak in my knees. about) - and how the world is made
for those who stand out, not fit in.
What’s interesting about this is
I’m the person who often speaks Yet, being on video makes me about the importance of stepping feel incredibly vulnerable.
While I’ve spoken on platforms on several continents and numerous stages with my message reaching hundreds of thousands of people, video has always felt different to me.
When I am speaking on stage, it’s once and done.
46 | Eydis Magazine

The audience gets to take in my message in the moment.
All that remains is the memory of what I said and how they felt at the end of my presentation.
And, I get the memory of having
delightful conversations that made my heart smile, as usually, the only people who wait in line to talk to me were people who found value from my keynote.
With video, however, the message lasts f-o-r-e-v-e-r – and
I’m stuck reliving my mistakes over and over and over again.
When I look back at the videos that were taken of my 11 years ago when I opened the doors to Upside Thinking, Inc., I cringe and say aloud just about every time, “What were you thinking?!?” (Please don’t run to google to look for those videos. And, if you do, be kind.)
It’s not that I go looking for them, the videos simply have a way
of finding me. (There’s nothing quite like an old high school connection that you were never very close to reaching out to you out of the blue to let you know that they’ve seen your disastrous video from a decade ago.....)
Putting yourself out there in video or any format opens you up to being judged.
As I desire to speak loudly and proudly about who I am and who I am not, I am clear that this is one of the main reasons that producing videos has been a knuckle-clenching struggle for me, despite countless coaches and mentors insisting that
this needs to be part of every leadership coach’s repertoire.
How I see it is it’s like giving others permission to freely judge you.
Sigh.
Whenever I’m challenged with something, I examine what benefit I get from taking the action and what benefit I get from not taking the action.
eydisauthenticliving.com 47

The answers often astound me.
So, really, this isn’t about video at all; it’s about whether you’ve been hiding out and what you can do to step out of the shadows.
It’s impossible to lead your mission and design your destiny if you’re being pulled in multiple directions.
You “should” spend more time on social media to increase your sphere of influence.
You “should” have partners and sponsors at work who promote you and your great work.
You “should” be producing videos, writing white papers or your own book to get media attention to make a name for yourself.
Lots of conflicting messages from different gurus will actually
leave you exhausted and overwhelmed.
And, while each of these may have some merit, if you don’t stick to what you do best and network the rest, you’ll also be unfulfilled. If you’re ready to step out of the shadows and into the light, here are four ways you can ensure you take action on what matters most.
Know who you are - and who you are not. Regardless of
what others are doing or the results they are getting, if you follow their lead and it isn’t in alignment with who you are, you will find yourself in an incredibly unhappy place.
For example, if you spend countless hours marketing yourself online by writing articles, and blog posts and you’re your genius is speaking to groups or
sharing your wisdom through video, every time you sit down
a little part of you will shrivel up inside and you’ll probably spend a lot of time procrastinating.
Use your strengths!
Know where you’re going. When my husband plans a vacation for the two of us, he always has a specific country in mind.
After choosing the destination, he has a checklist he follows
to ensure we have a first-class experience.
If you don’t know where you’re headed to in your professional and personal life, it’s a lot
like taking a trip without a destination in mind.
Sure, you may end up somewhere but it could take a lot more energy.
48 | Eydis Magazine

When you have a specific location, you avoid the overwhelm and uncertainty and even have something tobeexcitedaboutduringthehighs and lows of the journey.
If you have no idea where you are going, how do you know where to start?
Know why what you do matters. You’re big why enables you
to be laser-focused on what actions to take.
When you expend time thinking about what you should be doing or working on each day, you squander energy that could be used to live out your big mission.
When you are clear about your big why you don’t waste time, you invest it.
Create margin in your schedule. Even if you’re not claustrophobic, overcrowded elevators aren’t fun tobein. Actually, anyplacewhere you aren’t free to move limits what is possible. The same is true with you as you move about your day.
A calendar that is overfull, bursting at the seams, doesn’t allow for creativity and new opportunities to flow freely Examine where you may be hiding out and implement one of the four ways to take action on what matters most.
Leadership is a relationship. People follow the person first; then their great plan.
