OUR VISION

Tankerton FC has a vision of creating a tremendous community club active in the heart of the Whitstable area, working
with Schools, Colleges and Universities to provide the youngsters of the area with a real sense of identity and a club to be
proud of in a safe and positive environment. One where they can aspire to play in one of the adult sides the club will have,
and even play in the FA Cup in future years. A vision that sees us with a ground of our own working with and supported by
local business. A club that people want to play for and associate with, be proud of and belong to.

We want
• To provide quality, safe opportunities for people of all ages in our community.
• To provide a safe and positive alternative place to go other than playing on the streets
• To help people realise their potential, develop personal skills and confidence
• To introduce people to football regardless of age, ability, sex, religion and ethnic background
• To improve the performance of players, coaches and volunteers within the club.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

- To establish Tankerton FC as the best and most respected junior grassroots football club within East Kent,
offering facilities and coaching in an atmosphere that is conducive to the development of every young person in
terms of self-discipline, good behaviour and teamwork.

- To provide a positive coaching experience for players at Tankerton FC looking at helping each player to be the
best that they can be.

- To provide all the children, young people and adults within Tankerton Football Club whatever their age, gender,
race, religion, ethnicity, ability or disability the maximum opportunities to develop their football, personal,
social, educational and sporting skills to the full whilst ensuring the children’s welfare and enjoyment remains a
priority in all decisions we make.

- This will be achieved by providing dedicated, screened, trained and qualified coaching staff within a caring, safe
and fun environment for learning and development, enabling young players the opportunity to express
themselves, whilst being challenged to maximise their potential.

OUR AIMS

The aims of Tankerton Football Club are as follows:

- To encourage and promote the development of junior and youth football in a safe environment, within the local
community and surrounding district.

- The club will strive to provide an opportunity for players of both sexes to enjoy and participate in football at all
age groups and at the highest possible level.

- We will endeavour to facilitate the provision of the best playing amenities and equipment available to us in line
with the growth of sport in the district.

We will achieve the above by:

- Encouraging the development of football at all levels from mini soccer to youth and into senior football.
- Achieving this through a policy of equal opportunity where the best possible facilities are made available for

both sexes and all ages.
- Encouraging sportsmanship and fair competition at the highest possible levels, where improvement of

performance and enjoyment is far more important than results.
- Supporting the development of football and sport in general throughout the area and supporting attempts to

improve sporting venues and facilities.

OUR FRAMEWORK and PHILOSOPHY

T Talent development We will provide a positive environment for all players that is centred on their

development. This is an important responsibility between the coach and player.

Over the course of a football season we will ensure that players have the

opportunity to develop a range of experiences, by rotating positions, formations

and using varied tactics as much as possible. It is hoped that the experience will

develop their personal self-esteem and confidence, in taking more ownership and

personal responsibility.

A Achievement We will help players to achieve their full potential in a safe and positive manner.

This will depend upon the child/players aspirations and development pathway.

N Nurturing Each individual player will be entitled to a football experience both through

attendance at training and match days. It is important to recognise the need for

active participation within the team, and in some cases the need for minutes on the

pitch. There is a need to place development at the heart of the child/players

football pathway

K Knowledge We will help people learn and understand the game of football more

comprehensively including gaining an understanding of the FA's future of the game

vision. The children will learn about being part of a team and what it means to

belong to a club and to be an ambassador in the local community for that club, and

E Enjoyment We will put the development and enjoyment of the team and players before the

result. We are committed to an inclusive practice for all players within our care and

will extend our football services to a wide audience.

R Respect, Our players and coaches are expected to respect match officials, each other and to

Responsibility and understand what sportsmanship is. Through the power of sport and football we are

Citizenship hopeful of developing good responsible and respectful young people. We feel a

sense of moral responsibility in developing good citizens in society and talented

footballers.

T Tackling The club sets out a playing field for equal opportunity for all and we will tackle all

forms of discrimination, harassment or bullying.

O Opportunity We will give every child/player the opportunity to develop through match day and
N Number 1 training experiences. This will be provided by coaches with appropriate
qualifications, the child’s needs are paramount in this.
We simply aim to be the number 1 club in the district.

FOOTBALL DELIVERY

We want to be the best we can be by offering a fantastic football environment to a range of boys and girls within the local
catchment area and to be able to provide an environment where the club can support players into men’s and women’s
football.

This is a challenging area which will need wider consultation and development over the coming years. However, we intend
to: -

a. Develop the skills of our coaches to improve the football skills and life skills of our young players
b. Provide a framework for all abilities
c. Develop the club to Step 7 level
d. Provide a framework for our skilled players

6|P a g e

Tankerton Football Club
Coaches’ Handbook

YOUTH FOOTBALL

We want to provide football for all children irrespective of ability, and offer them the ability to play freely without undue
pressure or prejudice.
We also want to offer all children the opportunity to develop and progress their football skills.
We will continue to:

a. Promote Youth Football
b. To welcome children of all abilities
c. Implement new techniques and technologies to monitor progress
d. Look to monitor development
e. Implement the monitoring of equal opportunities data

GIRLS AND WOMENS FOOTBALL

We want to be in a place in 5 years where we can see some success on the pitch and an increase in teams from 2 – 5.
So, to continue to improve we will: -

a. Work with Kent FA to get more girls and ladies into football
b. Establishment of Ladies team within 2 years
c. Increase the number and quality of coaching for ladies and girls football
d. Review our sources of coaches and volunteers and players

DISABILITY FOOTBALL

Tankerton FC were seen by Kent FA as a club having the right ethos and structure to run a disability team and following
their approach to us we agreed to try and develop a team. We are pleased to report that we have recently started a
childrens’ hearing impaired team.
The sessions are run as non-competitive, fun and interactive where children will learn football skills, maintain fitness and
flourish in a social environment and gain confidence in sport.
The sessions are open to primary aged children with any level of deafness / hearing impairments.
Venue: All Saints Church Hall, Church Street, Whitstable, CT5 1PG.
For details of dates and times of future sessions please contact Liz Flaxman on 07913 152843
alternatively via: [email protected]

TANKERTON COACHING DNA

How we coach

Use a positive and enthusiastic manner with players at all times

- It is a necessity that all coaches working with Tankerton FC are extremely positive at all times, building
confidence and creating a safe environment for the young people. Everybody has bad days but all coaches must
try and park this at the gate before the session/match and remember that it is the player’s game and we are
merely ‘overseers’ who offer encouragement and learning opportunities for the kids to develop. Positive
reinforcement has massive impacts for children and this should be used for hard work and effort as opposed to
only for players who excel in skill or technical ability.

Deliver realistic game related practices

- All coaches should be delivering practice which directly links to the phases of play within the game. Traditionally
coaching sessions have always focused on ‘block practice’ (e.g. passing over 5 yards repeatedly over and over)
but research proves that long term learning occurs via more variable and random practice (passing over different
distances and varying heights etc.). It is a requirement of all coaches at TFC to deliver more game related
practice which is much more beneficial to long term learning and also more enjoyable for the players. Did Messi
and Ronaldo learn their skills from dribbling round cones or playing in the streets against other kids?

Use Games whenever possible in training

- Players always ask ‘when are we having a game’ so why do we as coaches always leave this to last? Again there is
a myth and long term belief that we, as coaches, must have the perfect planned session for players to learn but
when you think about it, most of us would have learnt a lot more playing in the streets against older kids than
we did running round cones. Tankerton FC coaches should recognise that the game is and always has been the
greatest teacher and kids learn better via trial and error. All coaches should aim to let kids explore and try new
things by playing the game wherever possible. Does that mean you just let them play a game and walk away?
No, it is the role of the coach to tweak the rules of the game to meet the outcomes required such as 4v2 or
changing the playing area to make it smaller or larger to meet the needs of the players. Constraint based games
allows players to solve problems and significantly improves decision making long term. This is a proven fact and
is essential for younger players to develop these key skills to help them as they get older.

Develop practices that let players make lots of decisions

- Once again, the best way to do this is via constraint based games. By delivering game like practices that have
constraints or playing games that have scenarios (such as you are losing 3-1 with 5 minutes to go, what will you
do?) allows players to make decisions on how they are going to play and encourages long term learning as well
as correct decision making. The role of the coach is to then discuss with the players why they thought that might
work and use guided discovery and questions and answers to check for the players learning.

Connect with the group before, during and after the session

- All coaches must inform the players at the beginning of each session what the aims are. This allows for players to
gain an understanding of what is trying to be achieved and also allows for the coach to gain a feeling for the
players understanding of the topic. It is extremely important to revisit the learning principles during the session
to make sure the learning objective is being met and this can be delivered in the form of a quick group discussion
during a drink break or by individual ‘drive bys’ during the session (this is where a game is being played and you
ask a player to come over to you so you can add some additional challenge or question why they are doing
something whilst the game continues). It is also important to bring the group together towards the end of the
session to check that the learning objectives were met. The recommendation would be to do this 10 minutes
before the end to avoid the players running off when the practice is over. Again, check for understanding and
that the learning objective was met (it won’t always but it allows you to identify if you need to revisit next week
or not).

9|P a g e

Tankerton Football Club
Coaches’ Handbook

Connect, activate, demonstrate and consolidate in every session

- During the sessions there may be times where the players are really not getting the intended outcomes and as
such there may be times where you need to step in to deliver the point. The best way to do this is by pausing
play and then asking them if they could show you a different way of doing something. For example, “Bring that
ball back, now could you show me a different way you could pass the ball forward? What could …. do to make it
easier for you to pass to them? Could you show me?” It is important to allow the players to make mistakes and
correct them but it is also imperative to recognise if the learning is not taking place and having the ability to
guide players to the correct answers without actually telling them. More advice/guidance will be given with this.

Value and work equally across the FA four corner model

- Tankerton FC is a community club and it is the responsibility of all coaches to ensure we develop the person as
well as the player. It is a requirement for coaches to be role models for the children within their teams by setting
an appropriate example and reinforcing the clubs ethos of hard work and determination at all times. To create a
‘Tankerton Player’ will require as much work on the social and psychological side of the player as it will on the
technical and physical.

Spend equal time delivering, planning and reviewing

- In an ideal world this would be possible but at grassroots level this will not always be the case. Coaches should
aspire to do this though and lead coaches will be available to offer advice to coaches around session planning
but it is a requirement of all to review how their session went to allow for improvement next time.

Include elements of transition in all practices and sessions where possible

- By using a games based approach, all of Tankerton FC’s sessions will include transition and elements of attacking
and defending. For Tankerton to produce players who are comfortable on the ball and decision makers, it is
imperative that all practices should feature a scoring mechanism (namely goals) for both sides to register. This
increases motivation for all players involved and also offers more ‘game realistic’ sessions. Do we want our
defenders to just kick it out when they win the ball or should they become the instigators of the counter attack?
To be a Tankerton player they need to recognise when and how to counter when winning the ball.

Use a carousel approach to practice and aim to maximise playing time

- Coaches will be supplied with arrival activities applicable to all sessions. These are essential at grassroots level
where you generally only have the children for an hour. The arrival activities will set the tone for the session and
will allow the coaches to set up the main session whilst the players are still learning and being empowered to run
their own activity. Coaches can then deliver the key messages and learning outcomes when the players are
having drink breaks and will help to ensure playing time is maximised.

Use varied coaching styles dependent on the group

- It is important to remember that delivering a games based approach to session design does not mean just
facilitating a game and not coaching. There will be times where the learning objectives are not being met and it
is important as coaches that we recognise this and deliver those key messages. Tankerton FC’s coaches will be
giving a document on all the different coaching styles alongside when and where it is best to use each. With
younger age groups the majority of interventions should be via Q&A and guided discovery whereas command
style will be more appropriate when dealing with the older age groups.

Aim for a 70% ball rolling time

- By setting appropriate arrival activities and delivering key messages through ‘drive by’ coaching and drink break
instructions, all Tankerton FC coaches will aim for their sessions to have the players playing the game at least
70% of the time

QUALIFICATIONS

All our coaches are volunteers (nearly all have other full time jobs not associated with football) and give up their time for
free to coach the boys and girls. We operate on a not for profit basis and the club is a registered charity. We use all our
subscriptions to provide football equipment and facilities for the children, as well as ensuring the coaches are all trained to
FA standards. All our coaches are CRB checked and at least one coach/manager per team is required to obtain the FA level
1 coaching standard. We have many coaches with FA level 2 and some with Uefa B qualifications. We also encourage any
team assistants to attend a Safeguarding Workshop and to attend an emergency first aid course.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

If you commit to helping us we will help you with your football qualifications, helping fund your FA Youth Modules and FA
Levels 1 and 2 for those that stay with us for a season or more.
What we want from you is the ability to create a positive and safe learning environment where the children learn
fundamental football skills, team work, and responsibility.
• Display sportsmanship, positive attitude, and promotion of a fun atmosphere
• Serve as a mentor and role model to all youth with whom you are coaching
• Plan and deliver team activities at training sessions.
• Take the teams for league matches
Please contact Tim Sells if you are looking to enhance your qualifications.

TRAINING & MATCH DAYS

TRAINING AT CCW AND ST EDMUNDS

You will be advised of your training slot at the beginning of the season, this will generally be on either a Wednesday or
Thursday evening and will last for one hour. Younger age groups are allocated the earlier times.

It is important that parents/carers/guardians remain outside of the playing area. They should only ever come onto the
playing area if they need to speak with a coach or manager regarding an urgent matter. Please ask
parents/carers/guardians to hand over their child at the gate and pick them up outside the gate?

The club are not insured for any injury to parents/carers/guardians on the playing area and with the high number of
players on the pitches the addition of adults makes the environment even more chaotic and unsafe.

Coaches are asked to remind their players to stay outside of the playing area until their slot commences. Not only is this
unsafe it is very disruptive to the teams already training, particularly so, if those who have come in before their time start
kicking balls around. Coaches must ensure they finish on time and vacate the playing area so the next coach and team can
start on time.

Finally, if children come to CCW by car, please ask the parents/carers/guardians to park their car and escort the player to
the gate, not drop them off somewhere in the car park. The car park gets very congested and with the number of children
running around unsupervised it could only be a matter of time before someone gets run over. Use the car parking spaces
nearer to the main road would help the situation.

PRE-MATCH ADVICE

Faversham & District Youth Football League

Dave McGovarin is the clubs fixture secretary for the Faversham League.
For home games he will notify you by Tuesday in the week leading up to the games which pitch (if at Seaview) or where
you will be playing and what time. Seaview pitch map is included in the Appendices.
For away games Dave will forward on the match confirmation email from the away team secretary which should arrive no
later than Wednesday before the game and will have details of kick off time and venue.

Note – When Seaview is not playable it may be necessary to reverse the fixture to the oppositions ground. Dave will
arrange this and notify you accordingly by email.

Email: [email protected]

East Kent Youth League

Keep a close eye on Full Time website for fixtures and the Tankerton pitch schedule issued by Terry Whyte.

The League does not allow Managers to communicate with Fixture Secretaries of other clubs. Mike Welch, as our Fixture
Secretary takes care of all communication.

Email: [email protected] Mob: 07932 107569

Change of kick off. IF a ref has been allocated by League it will be difficult to change kick off times.

Any request for change of kick of time will have to be routed through Mike in order for forms to be sent to the opposition,
League, and perhaps the ref.

Referees are being appointed by EKYL and details of these will be sent out by Mike once received but access to this
information can also be obtained on EKYL Full time website under Refs.

• Fixtures are played on Sundays and can be played anytime between 10am-2pm. For away games the
opposition have to inform us of the fixture details 5 days prior to the match, we always endeavour to provide
you with as much notice of fixture details as possible.

• Once you have your league fixtures please book out Seaview with Terry for the home fixtures.
• Once the time of the game is known, I would recommend using teamer to notify your teams parents.

Teamer is an online team management application that is used to:

• Provide information on upcoming fixtures, times, dates and address etc
• Provide visibility of fixtures in advance (the whole fixture list for the entire season will be shown)
• Vote for the player of the match each week
• Use the comments board to discuss anything of to arrange lifts with other parents etc

Teamer is easy to use, if you have a smart phone you can download the app, the system can also be accessed online. Each
week the information about the upcoming game will be sent out; either by email or sms (if you have the app you will
receive the notification via the app). Please see link below:
https://teamer.net/
Please register to Teamer and we can then arrange for you to be added to the relevant team.

ORGANISING A REFEREE

Referee:

For home matches you are required to provide a referee. This does not need to be a qualified referee and where possible
the club would like to avoid having to pay someone to referee mini soccer games.

For East Kent Youth League games if you contact Iggy Tapsell [email protected] early in the week he will if
possible arrange a referee.

For Faversham and District League Dave McGovarin will arrange referees for home games.

To obtain reimbursement for referee fees from the club please fill out the Payment Request form (See Appendix or use
link below) and hand it to Dave McGovarin, please give Dave as much notice as possible, Dave will require receipts where
possible.

Complaints

also be helpful if the matter requires intervention by the respective league or Kent FA. Depending on the seriousness of

and speak with those involved. This may lead to disciplinary measures being undertaken in accordance with their club
procedures.
