EURO GOALS!
EURO GOALS!
Our last European fixture saw us defeat Maccabi Haifa 7-2 – the first time we have ever
scored seven goals in a Euro match and our fourth best result in European competition.
Let’s take a look back at the top three…
1 UEFA CUP FIRST ROUND, SECOND LEG
28.09.71
SPURS 9 KEFLAVIK 0
After four years without any European competition, we launched our 1971-
72 UEFA Cup campaign in some style. Icelandic part-timers Keflavik were
beaten 6-1 in the first leg in Reykjavik and Bill Nicholson’s side showed no
mercy in the N17 return. Martin Chivers helped himself to a hat-trick, Alan
Gilzean netted twice and there were further goals for Cyril Knowles, Ralph
Coates, Steve Perryman and Phil Holder – one of only two he scored in our
colours. It could have been more as well, with the Daily Express reporting
that our forwards ‘squandered a succession of chances’! It remains our
biggest European win and a scoreline we have only ever bettered twice (13-2
v Crewe Alexandra and 10-4 v Everton).
2 UEFA CUP FIRST ROUND, SECOND LEG
28.09.83
SPURS 8 DROGHEDA UNITED 0
Exactly 12 years to the day after our 9-0 win, we almost repeated the feat
against Drogheda United from the Republic of Ireland. Having registered
our club record away win in Europe in the first game with a 6-0 success, we
went two better at home. Keith Burkinshaw’s side hadn’t won at the Lane in
the league since the start of the season, so a full strength side was fielded to
get some confidence into the players and they duly obliged. Two goals apiece
for Graham Roberts, Mark Falco and Alan Brazil were added to by goals from
Chris Hughton and Steve Archibald. The 14-0 aggregate scoreline was just
one short of our best – the 15-1 against Keflavik.
3 EUROPEAN CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND, SECOND LEG
20.09.61
SPURS 8 GORNIK ZABRZE 1
Although only a preliminary round game on our first foray in Europe, this is
still considered one of the most impressive performances we have ever had
in European competition. Our all-conquering Double winning side had been
given a real shock in the first leg against Polish champions Gornik, going
down 2-4 having trailed 0-4 at one stage. Their ability to reproduce their
form on the continental stage was in doubt, but that was blown away on the
very first ‘glory, glory night’ at White Hart Lane. Roared on by a passionate
home crowd, we overwhelmed Gornik with wave after wave of Spurs attacks
and the visitors wilted under the pressure. Cliff Jones scored a first-half
hat-trick, Bobby Smith netted twice and there were also goals from Danny
Blanchflower, John White and Terry Dyson as we announced ourselves to the
rest of Europe in some style.

THE ROAD TO GLORY
THE ROAD
TO
GLORY
As we approach a year ending in ‘One’ and look forward to celebrating a number of anniversaries of
our previous trophy triumphs, in each matchday programme this season we’ll reflect on one game
that we played along the road to glory in one of those successes.
Paul Stewart pounces on the loose THE TROPHY:

THE MATCH:
BLACKPOOL 0
SPURS 1
THE DATE: 5 JANUARY 1991
Having enjoyed such great
success in the FA Cup
during the early 1980s,
the latter years of the
decade were certainly
less memorable.
Skipper Steve Perryman climbed
the Wembley Stadium steps and
lifted the famous old trophy aloft in
1981 and 1982 to continue our proud
record of never having lost an FA
Cup Final at the home of English
football.
And we were back there again in

dominated the 90 minutes with
both sides finding it very difficult
to play any real kind of possession-
based football. In fact, goalkeeper
Erik Thorstvedt was having to dig
divots into the pitch to stop the ball
blowing away at goal-kicks!
However we showed great
resilience to ensure the elements
didn’t provide the upset many
anticipated. Chances were few and
far between but the only goal of the
game fell to us in the 69th minute
when Paul Gascoigne floated a free
kick to the far post, Gary Lineker
knocked the ball back to former
Blackpool man Paul Stewart who
finished past home ‘keeper Steve
