2 TED HUGHES

Our defence of the FA Cup, so famously and uniquely won as a
non-league side in 1901, did not last long! Southampton knocked
us out at the first round stage after two replays at the start of the
following year.

Both sides were in the Southern League at the time and the first
game at the Lane ended 1-1 before a 2-2 draw in the replay when Ted
Hughes scored both our goals. Saints then beat us 2-1 at Reading’s Elm
Park to progress.

Hughes was a highly influential player for the Club during those
years at the turn of the previous century and was part of the team that
won the FA Cup against Sheffield United in 1901.

Having joined us in 1899 from Everton, he played over 300 games in
our colours including 30 FA Cup ties, before leaving in the summer of
1908 to join Clyde.

OBITUARIES

We were sorry to hear of the passing of the following Spurs supporters:
Barry Ephgrave, who sadly passed away at the age of 72 in May last year after a brave battle with cancer.
He started going to Spurs with his dad in the late 1950s, attending games for nearly 60 years sitting in the
old East Stand Block E Row F. Unfortunately, he never got to visit the new ground but will no doubt still be

shouting ‘Come On You Spurs’.
In memory of Philip Webb, a lifelong fan who passed away on 8 February last year and will be watching on in
spirit. It is a real sadness that he never got to see the new stadium and is deeply missed by his mum, Chris,

Andy, Claire and Tim.
We would like to extend our condolences to their families and friends at this sad time.

15. If you could sit down with your 16-year-

Japhet: “Accept criticism. I feel when I was younger,
I didn’t want to hear it. Not just take it but look at it,

So, I wouldn’t go anywhere, I’d keep looking forward.”
