THREE OF A KIND
CONTINUING OUR SERIES FOR 2020/21, WHERE WE’LL ASK PLAYERS, LEGENDS AND FANS FOR
THEIR SPURS TOP THREE - GOALS, MOMENTS, SAVES, MATCHES, MAYBE EVEN KITS!
DAVID HOWELLS
Spurs through and through, David Howells progressed from our youth system to play 335 times for us between 1986-1998.
An all-action midfielder, David, now 53 and still a regular for our Legends team, described two of his favourite moments as
‘like London buses, they came around within a month of a 12-year career!’.
HERE IS DAVID’S ‘THREE OF A KIND’ – MOMENTS…
Number three – inspired by the strike duo of Jurgen
Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham, a rare win at
Anfield takes us into the FA Cup semi-finals in 1995
David: “This one is tricky. Again, they go side-by-side,
one of the best moments quickly followed by one
of the worst. The win against Liverpool at Anfield in
the quarter-final of the FA Cup in 1995, that was a
momentous occasion, a fantastic game, one of the best
games I was ever involved in. But then, from that win to
the disappointment of the semi-final defeat against
Everton, that took the gloss off what we did at Anfield.
However, at the time, and still now, it’s a great memory.”
Number two – we recover from a disastrous first Number one – Gazza’s free-kick, Lineker’s double and
half, including Paul Gascoigne’s injury, to lift the champions-elect Arsenal beaten in the first FA Cup
FA Cup against Forest at Wembley in May, 1991… semi-final at Wembley, April 1991…
David: “Everything that could have gone wrong, David: “We’d played Arsenal twice in the league and we
did in the first half! Gazza’s injury, Gary Lineker actually gave them a bit of a chasing at White Hart Lane,
scored, and it shouldn’t have been disallowed, then a game that ended 0-0, Seaman was unbelievable. We
he missed the penalty, and we were 1-0 down at the knew we could beat them. We played exceptionally well.

no-one will expect you to do anything now, Gazza’s with us. We were hanging on more in the second half but
not here, but you have a great chance to go and we had something to hang on to. You knew how much it

THROUGH THE LENS
KING OF
THE LANE!
Ledley King wheels away in
celebration with his defensive
partner Michael Dawson after
netting our second goal in the 5-1
victory over Aston Villa on 1 May,
2005 – much to the delight of our
fans behind the goal!.
By no means a regular on the
scoresheet, this was Ledley’s third
goal of 2004/05 season and this was
his best tally during the course of a
single campaign, also scoring three
times for us the following season.
In total, he scored 14 times in 323
appearances in our colours.
This was a great performance from
Martin Jol’s team in our third from last
game of the season. Fredi Kanoute put
us ahead after just six minutes before
Ledley struck, firing home the rebound
after Andy Reid’s shot had hit the post.
And it was 3-0 after just 27 minutes
as Kanoute added his second of the
game.
Villa, managed by David O’Leary,
reduced the deficit just before the
interval when Gareth Barry’s penalty
beat Paul Robinson, who went off
injured just after the hour mark to be
replaced by Radek Cerny.
But we were soon three goals to the
good again after Reid’s superb rising
shot found the back of the net, with
Stephen Kelly rounding off the scoring
in the final minute.
We finished the campaign in ninth
on 52 points, one place and five points
ahead of Villa.
