FIRSTS
Tottenham Hotspur has always been described as a club of ‘firsts’ as we’ve blazed a trail throughout
the game in this country and abroad down the years. In our new series for this season, each issue
we will reflect on the matches, the people and the occasions that have seen us set the standard and
helped shape our history.
FIRST Jermain Defoe takes home the match ball after
a five-star performance in the 9-1 win over Wigan
PLAYER TO SCORE
FIVE GOALS IN ONE 25
HALF OF A PREMIER
LEAGUE MATCH
There have been five players who
have scored five goals in a Premier
League match – but only one of
those completed his quintet in just
one half of football!
Jermain Defoe joined an elite
group which only included Andy
Cole and Alan Shearer at the
time when he scored five times
in our enthralling 9-1 defeat of
Wigan Athletic at the Lane on 22
November, 2009.
The trio have since been joined
by Dimitar Berbatov and Sergio
Aguero, but Jermain stands
out alone in his extraordinary
achievement and it will take
something special for anyone to
repeat such a feat.
The striker arrived at White Hart
Lane from West Ham United in
February 2004 and was quickly
among the goals in our colours,
scoring four in his first three Spurs
appearances.
Over the next four years, his
name was a regular feature on
the scoresheet until he moved to
Portsmouth in January, 2008.
Within a year he was back in
N17 and the goals continued to
flow. By the time Wigan arrived at
the Lane, JD had scored already
10 times for club and country in
the 2009/10 season and then
proceeded to put on a five-star

MATCH OF THE DAY 27
For all the TV coverage of football
across a variety of channels and
platforms these days, BBC’s Match
of the Day continues to hold its own
56 years after it first broadcast.
It was at the start of the 1964/65
season that a regular football
programme on television began.
The title Match of the Day had
already been used by the BBC for
its Wimbledon tennis highlights
programme in June 1964, before
adopting it for its football coverage
as well a couple of months later.
The first programme was
broadcast on 22 August 1964,
when highlights of that day’s game
between Liverpool and Arsenal
was shown. The identity of the
match was kept secret until 4pm,
by agreement with the Football
League, who feared crowds
would stay at home to watch it.
Nearly an hour of highlights of
the game was shown, starting at
6.30pm on the Saturday evening
with commentary by Kenneth
Wolstenholme and Walley Barnes.
The following two Saturdays saw
coverage of Chelsea v Sunderland
and Fulham v Manchester United,
before we made our Match of the
Day debut on 12 September, when
we travelled to Upton Park to take
on West Ham United.
Starting at 7pm, viewers were
treated to a five-goal London
derby thriller which the Hammers
edged thanks to a hat-trick from
Johnny Byrne – his winning goal
coming three minutes from time.
Jimmy Greaves had earlier put us
2-1 up.

season with 36 goals, made it 2-1
but Bill Whatley’s subsequent own Taffy O’Callaghan
goal meant that the points were 39
shared. Full-back Bill ‘guested’ for
West Ham during World War Two.
Centre-forward Ted Harper, who
had left us for Preston North End
in December 1931, was the Division
Two top scorer that season with 37,
plus another six in the cup. He had
famously set a Spurs record of 36
goals in 30 league games in 1930/31.
Our programme for West Ham’s
visit was our traditional four-pager
on pink paper that cost one penny.
It featured a cartoon on the cover
relating to our previous game at
Fulham where Hunt scored twice
in the 2-2 draw. With page three
devoted to the line-ups in 2-3-
5 formation plus league tables,
and fixtures on the back, the only
reading was on page two.
George Greenfield, a rare talent
with a promising future, had broken
his leg at Fulham but reported
to have “borne up splendidly.” He
had been visited in hospital by the
Fulham players who ‘were anxious
to assure him how deeply they
regretted the accident.” Sadly,
Greenfield never really overcame
the injury and would play just 31
senior games for us.
The editor continued: “This
accident to Greenfield is a
catastrophe. It is bad for the player,
it is bad for the team, it is bad for the
club. All that we can do is to keep a
stiff upper lip, and not to permit it
to check us in the sustained effort
that is being made to reach the first
place in the table.”
West Ham battled to the semi-
finals of the FA Cup that season
but lost 2-1 to eventual winners
Everton at Molineux. The Toffees
beat Manchester City 3-0 in the
Wembley final. We won 6-0 at
Oldham in the third round but then
lost 2-0 at Third Division South
side Luton Town.
We subsequently put forward a
motion to introduce numbers on
shirts at the 1933 Football League
AGM, but the idea was rejected.
Within six years, numbering was
made mandatory.

HEADS THROUGH THE LENS
WE WIN… 48
Mike England gets between
West Ham’s Clyde Best (left)
and Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson to
power a header goalwards
during our 1-0 victory over the
Hammers at White Hart Lane in
September 1972.
Our Welsh centre-half was a
lynchpin of our defence during
the early 1970s and featured 54
times in the 1972-73 season as we
won the League Cup and reached
the semi-finals of the UEFA
Cup. Our league form perhaps
suffered due to the extended cup
runs and we finished eighth in the
table, some 15 points behind title
winners Liverpool.
We were just a single point off
top spot – occupied by Everton
– when Ron Greenwood brought
his Hammers to N17 for this derby
clash. They were two points adrift
of us but just above mid-table
in the early standings, with both
sides having played nine games.
The game was won in the closing
minutes, but not before Robson
had a shot which cannoned off
the post and saw another effort
saved by Pat Jennings. Our
winner came when England met
Jimmy Pearce’s corner with a
header which deflected off Frank
Lampard and into the net.
Centre forward Best was
one of the first black players
to establish themselves in the
First Division. Born in Bermuda,
he signed professionally with
West Ham in April 1969 and
went on to score 58 goals in 221
appearances during his eight-
year spell with the Hammers.
Widely regarded as one of the
most influential footballers in
history, like our very own Walter
Tull, Best was a pioneer for
the black footballer and their
legacies will continue to inspire
generations in the future.
