The Blue Hole — mother of the San Antonio River

Traditionally considered the source of the San Antonio River, water from the San Antonio Spring rises
from the Blue Hole to join Olmos Creek, becoming San Antonio’s namesake river a short distance to
the south. Tucked away in a nature sanctuary between the home of the Sisters of Charity of the Incar-
nate Word and the University of the Incarnate Word, the Blue Hole was a campsite and sacred place for
aboriginal people dating back 11,000 years. Native Coahuiltecan creation stories tell of its “Spirit Wa-
ters” giving birth to all creation. While visitors in recent centuries observed the spring’s abundant daily
flow of clear water, gushing forth as a geyser up to 20 feet high, in modern times its blue waters are
only seen at times of heavy rainfall. Philanthropist and civic leader George W. Brackenridge developed
the spring as an early water company for the city of San Antonio and, in 1897, sold the land containing
it to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. It is protected by the Headwaters Coalition, formed
by the sisters in 2008 as a non-profit ministry dedicated to spreading an ecological ethic and protect-
ing the 53-acre preserve that includes the Blue Hole. – By Carol Baass Sowa
